Great opportunity for youth sailors at Red Bull Youth America’s Cup

February 14, 2013

February 13 saw the award-winning line-up of sailors from ORACLE TEAM USA as well as Artemis Racing greet the youth sailors, participating in the first selection series of the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, at a special media function.

The stars – Russell Coutts, Jimmy Spithill, Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy and Nathan Outteridge – together have a collected resume beyond excellence: five America’s Cup victories, 14 Olympic medals and countless other titles.

Coutts might be the most experienced of the group with four America’s Cup victories to his credit, but it was Spithill who put the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup into perspective.

“My pathway to the America’s Cup was one of good luck,” said ORACLE TEAM USA skipper Jimmy Spithill, who at age 30 in 2010 became the youngest skipper to ever win the America’s Cup.

“When I was a youth sailor there wasn’t a clear pathway to the Cup. But the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup gives these guys a great opportunity, and the game’s opened up to much wider participation,” said the now 33-year-old Spithill. “Their level of organization is impressive.”

Added Ainslie, the four-time Olympic gold medalist: “The Olympics used to be the avenue to get into professional sailing and the America’s Cup. But now the Cup is becoming more accessible for youth sailors, and that’s great for the sport.”

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup has been developed to give youth sailors a pathway to the America’s Cup. In years past youth sailors have had a difficult task ascending the hierarchy of an America’s Cup team. Youth sailors simply weren’t viewed as having enough experience to compete at the high level demanded by America’s Cup crews. The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup aims to change that.

“It’s been very exciting to come here and get an opportunity to race the AC45. It’s just fantastic,” said Erik Heil, the 23-year-old helmsman for Germany’s STG/NRV team. “But at the same time it’s disappointing that we only get one week here. We’d like to have more time.”

STG/NRV is one of six teams participating in the first selection series. Another six teams are scheduled for the second series next week, Feb. 18-24, after which at least four teams will be selected for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup scheduled Sept. 1-4.

“The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is the best chance for young sailors to make history,” said Hans-Peter Steinacher, one of the Red Bull sailing directors. “We will select the best of the best.”

The six teams in this first selection series represent Australia, Austria, Denmark, Germany, New Zealand and South Africa. Some of the crews have put up their own money to enter the selection series, while others have raised money to help offset the costs.

All of them have shown more skill and poise than expected, which could be considered surprising given that most of the sailors have raced one-design dinghies and not the powerful AC45 that is used at the events of the America’s Cup World Series.

“Yesterday in the big breeze, around 17 knots, it was more difficult than I expected,” said Philip Buhl of STG/NRV, a champion Laser sailor. “Every time we completed one maneuver we had to prepare for the next, there was no time to catch your breath.”

The teams have been sharing San Francisco Bay with ORACLE TEAM USA and Artemis Racing, which have been practicing on their AC72s the past couple of days. As if the AC45s weren’t captivating enough, the sight of AC72s speeding past on foiling daggerboards has left the youths’ mouths agape.

“We want to push the AC45s, but yesterday we had to decide whether to keep pushing or stop and watch the 72s sail by,” said Buhl. “At home we’d say it was a ‘problem of luxury.’”

Teams that are slated for the second selection series will represent Argentina, Great Britain, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland. They’ll have to come prepared because there are scant few spots available in the final. But even if they don’t advance to the final, there’ve been given a special opportunity.

Day One at Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Selection Series

February 11, 2013

Day One at the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Selection Series offered a demonstration of the massive expectations on the youth teams who have gathered in San Francisco for a shot ahead of September’s regatta.

The teams were put through their paces on shore by Sports Directors Roman Hagara and Hans-Peter Steinacher, where the physical demands of sailing an AC45 wing sail catamaran were made clear through an exhausting fitness evaluation.

“That’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” said Michael Ovenstone, a 22-year-old trimmer for South Africa’s i’KaziKati team. “I really feel the burning in my arms,” he said, while massaging the inside of his forearms. “I don’t know what muscle that is, but it burns.”

Along with the fitness testing, the teams were instructed on how to sail an AC45 and how, hopefully, to avoid capsizing.

“We’re talking to them about the four most common scenarios that can lead to a capsize,” said Darren Bundock, from ORACLE TEAM USA, who is one of the coaches sharing his expertise. “But I imagine we could see some creativity over the course of these sessions in finding some new ways we haven’t encountered yet.”

At the beginning of the day, the six youth teams were welcomed by Russell Coutts, the CEO of ORACLE TEAM USA and a driving force behind the creation of the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup.

“The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is meant to be a way for you guys to show your talents and make it to the pro sailing ranks,” Coutts told the group. “So work hard but also have fun and enjoy yourselves. This is some of the best and most fun racing I’ve done in years. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it too.”

Beginning Sunday, the teams will start on-the-water training in the AC45s, leading to race practice later in the week.

“We need to build towards the racing methodically,” Hagara said.

“These boats are a handful for the most experienced, professional sailors,” agreed his counterpart Steinacher. “So it’s important that we take the right steps to allow everyone a chance to learn, develop and succeed as we move towards the racing at the end of the week and the eventual selection for September.”

The six national teams taking part in the first session of the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Selection Series are:

AUS – Objective Australia
AUT – Team Austria
DEN – Danish Youth Vikings
GER – STG-NRV Youth Team
NZL – Full Metal Jacket Racing
RSA – Team i’KaziKati

The first group is on site at the Selection Series in San Francsico between February 9-15. Then, from February 18-24, a second group of youth crews will go through the same process, including the following teams:

ARG – Arg Youth Team
GBR – GBR Youth Challenge
ITA – Team Italy powered by Stig
POR – ROFF/Cascais Sailing Team
SUI – Team TILT

At the end of the second session, at least four teams will be selected to proceed to the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup taking place from September 1-4, right before the America’s Cup Finals in San Francisco.

Platinum level certification from Sailors for the Sea for ACWS San Francisco events

February 08, 2013

Each of the America’s Cup World Series regattas in San Francisco, in August as well as October 2012, has been recognized with the first-ever Platinum level certification under the Clean Regattas program of Sailors for the Sea, due in part to a significant 98 percent landfill diversion rate at the second AC World Series regatta in San Francisco last October.

The AC World Series regattas are the first ones that Sailors for the Sea has certified at the Platinum level, which recognizes achieving almost all possible points of certification.

Sailors for the Sea is the Official Clean Regattas Partner of the 2013 America’s Cup. The America’s Cup Event Authority has made a commitment to follow the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regattas program.

Clean Regattas certification provides independent, third-party verification that a yacht club, sailing program, or regatta is environmentally responsible, and is doing its utmost to protect the waters upon which people sail.

The Clean Regatta program includes best practices such as recycling, composting and litter free events that any regatta should aim to achieve. Each best practice achieved is awarded points, which taken together are then awarded a certification level (Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze). An independent Clean Regattas Review Board analyzed data submitted by the Event Authority and determined points achieved by the race organizers.

“The AC World Series events have been conducted with a high degree of environmental consciousness and attention to minimizing any potential negative impact the events could have on the local ecosystem,” said Dan Pingaro, executive director and CEO of Sailors for the Sea. “Together we have established a strong track record of success that includes action and education.”

Sustainable best practices at the San Francisco events included providing free local drinking water for spectators, the use of a B20 blend of biodiesel and solar for event power, serving only sustainably harvested seafood, using only compostable serviceware at concessions, and conducting outreach programs promoting marine protection through the America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project.

Previously, the AC World Series Newport event (June 26-July 1, 2012) was awarded Gold level certification. Four other AC World Series regattas were certified at the Silver level, and the first AC World Series event in Cascais, Portugal in July 2011 was awarded the Bronze level.

“We are pleased with the forward progress we have achieved at each of our AC World Series events,” said Jill Savery, the Head of Sustainability for ACEA. “This is the result of cooperation and hard work from all of our staff, vendors, Teams, Partners, spectators and the City of San Francisco. We thank all of them and Sailors for the Sea staff for their support and look forward to improving our performance during the 2013 Summer of Racing.”

A British team, the GBR Youth Challenge, has been added to the roster to take the place of the previously invited French Youth Team, who now qualify directly for September’s event after gaining support from the French America’s Cup World Series entry, Energy Team.

“The America’s Cup is the greatest thing you can do in sailing,” said Adam Lees, of the British team. “The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is about getting more people involved in the competition and making it more accessible to young sailors so the next generation is involved early on.”

The Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, scheduled September 1-4, 2013, begins with the Selection Series in San Francisco in February. With the goal of ensuring the best of the best are on the starting line of the main event, the Selection Series will narrow the field through two rigorous training workshop and regatta sessions from February 9-15 and February 18-24, 2013.

“The goal of the selection process is two-fold,” said Hans-Peter Steinacher, a double Olympic gold medalist who shares the role of Sports Director for the event with Roman Hagara.

“First, we want all of the teams at the selection series to learn and improve and maximize their potential. At the same time, we must evaluate the crews over the course of the week so that we can invite the top teams to race for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in September. This is such a great chance for these young teams to launch their careers.”

“We will have this one chance to see the youth teams train and compete under high-pressure situations during the selection camp,” agreed Hagara. “It’s a fantastic way to assess who can perform to their best and to select those who deserve to qualify for the main event.”

Emirates Team New Zealand, Artemis Racing, China Team and Energy Team have all indicated they are supporting teams for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. Youth crews with the support of an America’s Cup World Series team are eligible for direct entry to September’s event via the Regatta Director.

ORACLE TEAM USA, the current holder of the America’s Cup, conducted its own training camp before Christmas to select which American teams it would support. USA45 Racing (representing the USA), and American Youth Sailing Force (representing San Francisco) will both spend the coming months training for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup under the stewardship of the American Cup defender.

The Selection Series in February will be held on the same AC45 wing sail catamarans the youth crews will race in September. These are also the same boats the America’s Cup teams race in the AC World Series.

Nespresso to join the 2013 America’s Cup as its Official Coffee

January 23, 2013

Nespresso will become the Official Coffee of the 2013 America’s Cup, continuing a strong relationship between the premium portioned coffee pioneer and the race for the oldest trophy in international sport.

Partnership of America's Cup and Nespresso

Partnership of America's Cup and Nespresso@ACEA

The agreement with the America’s Cup will allow Nespresso to create multiple brand and product experiences throughout the ‘Summer of Sailing’ in San Francisco. Fans and guests at the America’s Cup Park will have the opportunity to taste the ultimate cups: Nespresso Grand Cru coffees.

The new partnership also includes the America’s Cup World Series, which returns to Naples, Italy in April, before the world’s attention turns to San Francisco for a full summer of cutthroat competition, beginning with the Louis Vuitton Cup, America’s Cup Challenger Series (Jul. 4 – Aug. 30). The summer of sailing culminates with the America’s Cup Finals (Sept. 7-21) where ORACLE TEAM USA will race to defend the America’s Cup against the top challenger.

Stephen Barclay, CEO of the America’s Cup Event Authority, said: “We are pleased and proud to welcome Nespresso as the Official Coffee of the 34th America’s Cup and look forward to being able to provide our guests, partners and fans with ‘the ultimate cup’ when they come to the America’s Cup Park in San Francisco.”

“We are proud to be supporting such a prestigious and exciting event,” said Patrice Bula, Chairman of Nespresso. “Like the teams competing with cutting-edge technology in this ultimate sailing challenge, we strive for excellence. This partnership gives us the perfect opportunity to showcase Nespresso on a global stage.”

Nespresso and Sailing
Nespresso began its association with the sport of sailing as co-sponsor of Team Alinghi for the 32nd America’s Cup campaign between 2004-2007, as well as being the Official Coffee to the event.  In 2010, Nespresso and Wally, the world leader in yachting innovation, launched the Nespresso Cup, an international regatta exclusively for the Wally Class in Portofino, Italy, followed by a second edition in 2011.

Nespresso’s partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand announced in April 2011 and their recent announcement as Official Coffee to the 34th America’s Cup will build on the company’s history with the America’s Cup and sailing.

Nespresso has chosen to support the sport of sailing as it offers a prestigious image, international scope providing multi-faceted opportunities for brand exposure and a unique way to experience the brand.

America’s Cup Concert Series to be hosted by the America’s Cup Pavilion

January 23, 2013

The America’s Cup and Live Nation are pleased to introduce the America’s Cup Concert Series at the America’s Cup Pavilion, positioned between Piers 27/29. The America’s Cup Pavilion will become the San Francisco‘s first outdoor, waterfront concert venue for multiple events in the summer of 2013.

Sting, the multi-Grammy award winning musician is the first headline act to be announced. Tickets for the concert, part of the critically acclaimed Back to Bass world tour, will go on sale beginning Friday, February 22nd at 10am. Additional events will be announced throughout the concert season that runs through October.

The America’s Cup Concert Series is a major live entertainment initiative in support of the America’s Cup Park on the Embarcadero, intended to create a vibrant, public space with a full range of activities for sailors and non-sailors alike.

The new, temporary, 9,000 seat venue will be centered in the America’s Cup Park on Piers 27/29 and will host a wide range of events including concerts, family shows, community and business events, comedy, as well as America’s Cup race activities and viewing sessions.

The America’s Cup Park at Piers 27/29 on the Embarcadero is the center of event activities during the 34th America’s Cup in San Francisco. This is where fans will find team bases, interactive exhibits, food and beverage courts, as well as shops featuring their favorite team gear. This is also the place to come on race days for the Dock-In and Dock-Out shows, as well as team and guest hospitality.

The America’s Cup Concert Series will run throughout the summer of 2013 and coincide with the Louis Vuitton Cup (the America’s Cup Challenger Series), the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup and the America’s Cup Finals.

“The America’s Cup is one of the world’s great sporting events and by partnering with Live Nation we can create a fun atmosphere with both entertainment and educational opportunities in the family-friendly environment of the America’s Cup Park,” said Stephen Barclay, CEO of the 34th America’s Cup. “San Francisco’s storied music history is part of the fabric of this great community and we plan to continue to celebrate music and culture as part of the America’s Cup.”

“We’re honored to partner with an event as prestigious as the America’s Cup to bring an exciting new entertainment venue to San Francisco,” said Jodi Goodman, President of Live Nation Northern California. “An outdoor venue in the City of San Francisco is long overdue. The America’s Cup Park will truly add to our rich San Francisco culture and bring more value to our City and its waterfront.”

The stage and seating on Piers 27/29 will allow America’s Cup organizers to host a range of both ticketed and non-ticketed events. In addition to a full music line-up, the amphitheatre will offer daytime shows featuring educational topics themed around the America’s Cup and race viewing opportunities on a large screen.

Construction is set to begin in spring of 2013 with the first events anticipated by mid-May 2013 and running through October 2013.

ORACLE TEAM USA wing two for Defender’s first AC72 yacht arrives in San Francisco

January 09, 2013

The new wing sail for ORACLE TEAM USA was delivered to San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon, completing a journey from New Zealand and around the South Bay before reaching the team base at Pier 80. The wing is the second constructed by the team and will be fitted into the Defender’s first AC72 yacht to start sailing again in the next weeks.

“The guys have done a fantastic job to get the wing built, and it will go together very quickly. You’ll see it out on the water in early February,” said ORACLE TEAM USA skipper Jimmy Spithill. “We’re really excited to get out there again, and from a sailing point of view, sort of reward those who put all of the work in to get the boat ready again.”

The wing was built at Core Builders Composites in Warkworth, New Zealand, and loaded onto a Hamburg Süd ship in Auckland that departed on December 23. The ship arrived to Ports America in Oakland Tuesday morning, January 8, where the wing was loaded onto a truck. With height and weight restrictions on the Bay Bridge, the truck traveled around the South Bay and back north to San Francisco.

“The wing left Core Builders Composites in a good state, even with the compressed timeline to complete it. It’s far more finished, and more details were sorted out,” said ORACLE TEAM USA shore team manager Mark Turner. “We’ve basically got another few weeks of work to get the new wing commissioned. Once that happens, we’ll be in a situation to be able to do load tests.

“We’ve made all of the repairs to the platform, and over the next few weeks we’re reassembling the platform and finishing off some modifications,” Turner said. “We got to where we needed to before Christmas, which was a big effort by the guys, and I’m confident we’ll be ready to go sailing again in February.”

The timeline on the completion of the new wing was pushed up as a result of the capsize of ORACLE TEAM USA ‘17’ in October. The wing will be assembled and fitted into the repaired boat. Remaining repair work includes installing systems and painting, which will involve a 24-hour work schedule.

“To see this turn up inside the shed is a big psychological boost for the whole team,” Spithill said, as the entire team is anxious for the catamaran yacht AC72 to return to the water. “Any day that looks good for sailing, we’ll be out there, capitalizing and really trying to put some hours on this wing and the boat.”
