Amels is busier than ever with 12 new construction projects and two major refits underway. The current Limited Editions range offers four models which range from 180 feet to 242 feet (55 to 74 metres), or in gross tonnage terms, from 650 to 1720 Gross Tons. All exterior designs are by Tim Heywood, whilst a number of owners opt for a fully customised interior design.

Amels has been part of the Dutch family-owned Damen Shipyards Group since 1991. The Damen Shipyards Group specialises in technically sophisticated vessels. Five superyachts by Amels due to be delivered this spring

March 30, 2012

The prestigious Dutch shipyard Amels is quite busy at the moment, with 12 new construction projects as well as two major refits underway. In the next few weeks, for example, two Amels 180 yachts, including the motor yachts Step One and one Amels 212 – the Imagine superyacht, are expected to be delivered, in addition to two extensive refits of existing Amels vessels.

Despite the global economic challenges of recent times, Amels has recorded a steady growth in annual turnover of approximately 10% over the past four years, outperforming the competition by a considerable margin. Based on orders taken during this period, Amels has now become the largest superyacht builder in the Netherlands.

Amels managing director Rob Luijendijk attributes the company’s sustained run of success to the company’s Limited Editions concept. “It bridges the gap between full custom and semi-custom building,” he said. “Owners have come to realise that while the full custom option offers the ultimate in personalisation, there are many unknowns in embarking on a custom project – will the boat be reliable, how will it perform, will the build stay within budget and will it be delivered on time? Limited Editions answers all those concerns and Amels has earned a reputation for delivering yachts of the highest quality on, or even ahead of, schedule.”

The current Limited Editions range offers four models which range from 180 feet to 242 feet (55 to 74 metres), or in gross tonnage terms, from 650 to 1720 Gross Tons. However, in keeping with growing demand for Amels yachts, work is already underway to develop a yacht of just under 3000 Gross Tons.

The company’s SEA AXE Fast Yacht Support vessel concept is also proving successful. With its high performance and high quality of finish, the SEA AXE is redefining the image of the support vessel as more than just a second-class work horse. This is a purpose-designed vessel developed and built by Amels’ parent company, Damen Shipyards.

The AMELS managing director Rob Luijendijk said: “We always welcome and listen carefully to new ideas and innovations from our clients, and with this yacht our design and engineering teams have been able to accommodate all the owner’s wishes. This has resulted in a high level of customisation and new features being incorporated into the specification for this AMELS 180, and we’re delighted to be working again with OCEAN Independence and OCEAN Management on such an exciting project. With the sale of two AMELS 177s at the end of last year, followed by the AMELS 199 and now this latest AMELS 180 motor yacht, the yard is going to be busier than ever. This shows we really are on the right track with the LIMITED EDITIONS concept.”

Minnema commented: “The LIMITED EDITIONS premise is to offer clients a premium semi-custom design that provides room for personalisation, yet which allows the owner to enter the project and take delivery in much less time than a fully custom-built yacht. Tim Heywood’s design for the AMELS 180 luxury yacht fulfilled the owner’s wishes in every respect.”

The owner has specified a number of areas and features for customisation on the AMELS 180, for example:
- The Main Deck Saloon has been extended, increasing the luxury space by more than 30%.
- The Owner’s Suite will be fitted with a folding balcony, while the Main Deck Saloon will be fitted with two, providing easy access to the open air.

- The “wide-body” specification for the Sky Saloon will create a generous amount of light and space.
- An extra large Sun Deck will also be engineered for a Touch & Go helipad above the bridge, with a maximum take-off weight of 2000Kg. The dual use helipad adds 32 square metres to the Sun Deck.

- Sophisticated foldable swimming stairs will be incorporated in the swimming platform.
Since the concept was introduced in 2005, eight LIMITED EDITIONS yachts have been delivered, the most recent delivery is the AMELS 212, IMAGINE. Eleven more projects are under construction. Currently being finalised are design details for what will be the largest in the range, the 73.5 metre-long AMELS 242. At this point the LIMITED EDITIONS fleet will range from 650GT to 1700GT in gross tonnage.

The AMELS yard in Vlissingen is operating at 100% capacity.
