Private submersible mega yacht MIGALOO concept by motion code: blue

May 24, 2013

The Austrian yacht design firm, motion code: blue, has recently developed a design study of a 115-metre, six-deck private submersible yacht MIGALOO concept. The studio has also completed several projects in both production yachts as well as super yachts, being presently in build, and has worked on yachts in Asia, Europe and the USA.

Motion code: blue services include yacht exterior design, interior design as well as on-site supervision and building supervision.

After intense research and  based on excellent knowledge of the current yacht market, the studio came up with an extraordinary design concept to satisfy the ever raising demands for individualization, self presentation and separation from the mass.

An increasing number of clients have exactly such special demands on the design as main points in their briefing for their designers, so the studio’s intention was to offer a stunning design concept especially for people, who are willing to expand the borders of imagination.

Managing directors Christopher Gloning’s and Christian Gumpold’s idea was to transform the well known and tested shape of current submarine designs into a private yacht which offers state-of-the-art luxury experience of same sized super yachts while having the huge benefit to submerge the whole vessel to travel and/or stay secretly and in total privacy underneath the waterline without any external disorders.

The hull of the 115 meters long and 11 meters wide mega yacht MIGALOO is identical to current submarines, only the tower is custom designed, which means it is longer and wider to host a light flooded main saloon followed by a wide staircase including a centered round elevator shaft.

When looking back to the enormous space of the aft deck, lounge areas, sun beds, a bar, an 8 by 3 meter-pool as well as a heli pad offer a wide range of activities and possibilities. When MIGALOO yacht is submerged, all furniture is stored in large storages underneath the granite decking and the pools’ bottom raises up to the main decks’ level.

The foredeck is fully dedicated to the owners’ privacy, hosting a full-beam private lounge. Lounges, a private bar and a private access to the 2-level-owners’ suite directly underneath complete this all new experience on the foredeck. The telescopically extendible roof provides shade and follows perfectly the contour lines of the hull when closed.

A spacious sun lounge on top of the tower completes the common amenities onboard a super yacht. The lounges are accessible via 2 wide stairways from the main deck, or, even more comfortable, from all interior deck levels via the lift. The telescopically extendible roof provides shade and will also be closed when the owner prefer to dive with the MIGALOO yacht.

For the crew, the design studio has planned an outdoor helm station on the forward top of the tower when superyacht MIGALOO travels above the water line, otherwise the spacious bridge and all necessary technical rooms hosting the equipment to control the submarine are right underneath the tower in the hull. Due to the hull’s design and dimensions inspired by existing submarines, necessary technical components can be easily positioned where they need to be without compromising the extra ordinary space for the owner and his guests, which are accommodated in 8 VIP-suites on sub-deck 2 and 3, while the owner has his private-full-beam-quarters over 2 decks on sub-deck 1 and sub-deck 2.

A cinema room, a library, a gym and a gaming room are additional features which ensure total comfort when living or travelling longer distances submerged.

4 wide side hatches (2 on each side) can be transformed into enormous beach terraces. A spacious dining area next to the saloon on sub-deck 1 and the adjoining beach club with luxurious access to the water are possible. Lounges and a Jacuzzi enhance this area into an extra ordinary outdoor experience at the waterline. A comfortable ladder connects the beach club with the main deck above for easy access to the water on these 2 decks. Removable sun sails on each deck guarantee pleasant sun protection.

All tenders and toys can be stored in the beach club or on the deck below, so the transport of a wide range of additional vehicles is possible.

Sub-deck 4 is entirely reserved for the crew quarters including crew mess, laundry, crew gym…, while the main galley is positioned on sub deck 2 underneath the dining room. A private staircase nearby enhances the service and the ergonomics on board without compromising the guests.

The hull and tower are equipped with large windows of special pressure-proof glass to offer a breathtaking view especially when luxury yacht MIGALOO is submerged near the surface to explore the beauty and diversity of marine life. All windows are surrounded with underwater lights to provide stunning views when the yacht is getting deeper.

Communication and especially navigation is provided by common and well tested technologies and the hull is designed to reach a maximum depth of 240 meters, so it’s very likely to travel nearby a school of whales heading into the deep while having a cup of tea and a good chat in the main saloon.

Project MIGALOO yacht is named after the world’s only albino humpback whale that travels up and down the east coast of Australia. First sighted in 1991, and believed to be three to five years old at that time, the whale was named “migaloo” as an indigenous Australian word for “white fella”.

The communalities between this special creature and the design of the studio’s private submersible yacht MIGALOO concept are simple: both are unique in their color scheme, there is no other white submarine of this type worldwide and both are born to travel underneath the waterline to explore the world’s oceans.

The fantastic idea to create a private submersible yacht MIGALOO with state-of-the-art-technologies and using well known shapes from the marine industry imparts this concept an appealing charm, the design team of motion code: blue is proud to have taken this step to enrich the yacht scene with this innovative concept idea.

Sailing yacht TARA to embark on new expedition in the Arctic

May 14, 2013

This month will see sailing yacht Tara circumnavigate the Arctic Ocean via the Northeast and Northwest passages, representing a scientific and academic adventure covering 25,000 kms and lasting 6 months. This international expedition will be in partnership with countries bordering the Arctic Ocean as well as in association with the Prince Albert II de Monaco Foundation and agnès b.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE EXPEDITION
All the scientists and institutes involved in the Tara Oceans 2009-2012 expedition will participate, along with Canadian & Russian laboratories specializing in Arctic research.

During the Tara Oceans Expedition 2009-2012, only the Arctic Ocean was missing in our effort to collect plankton from all the world’s oceans. There is therefore great interest in comparing  biodiversity in the Arctic with other oceanic regions, especially in the context of the major  transformations taking place. In fact, the summer of 2012 marked the most extensive Arctic ice melt ever observed.

The Tara Oceans Polar Circle 2013 research will be conducted around the borders of the ice pack where planktonic activity is the most important.

In addition to this global biological approach, oceanographic and chemical analyses specific to the Arctic will be undertaken. The aim is to understand the vulnerability of polar biodiversity in the face of human activity; how melting of the ice pack impacts the polar marine ecosystem and what types of pollution come into play in these remote areas.

Several key factors assure the success of this expedition. The scientific team has been working together since 2009. Their collective expertise and overall ecosystem approach, the availability of existing equipment, and Tara Expeditions’ experience in polar environment logistics are also invaluable assets.

CONTEXT
This mission will contribute to the international effort to study the Arctic ecosystem before a probable climate change. It will provide baseline data on the ecological status of Arctic waters, and help identify issues concerning the future development of this region.

Tara Expeditions will also use its presence to inform the public, politicians and the business world about the most urgent environmental issues in the Arctic, as well as problems faced by the people who inhabit the Arctic Circle. For some, the opening of maritime routes is an economic asset but for others, this development has an environmental risk. Sustainable development in the Arctic is definitely in question.

- Media partnerships
- Tara Journal at the end of the expedition
- Production of TV programs
- Tara Junior educational program

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
Tara Oceans Expedition global approach. Its goal is to compare the plankton and physico-chemistry of the Arctic with data collected in other oceans during the Tara Oceans expedition (2009-2012):
- Study of drifting plastic and air pollutants in the Arctic
- Study of ocean color, composition and pigments of surface particles for NASA by the University of Maine, USA
- Study of spring plankton blooms at the edge of the ice pack, conducted by the Université Laval, Quebec
- Collaboration with the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (Moscow) and the Russian Arctic National Park

ARCTIC CONDITIONS
As of today, only 2 sailboats have circumnavigated the Arctic Ocean.

Several types of risks can be identified: natural and technical. Natural hazards include the unpredictable weather, and the formidable presence of ice. Although the period of thaw gets longer almost every year, the window of passage (before the ice closes in again) is short and doesn’t leave much room for the unexpected. Temperatures will be between -10°C and +5°C  when expedition yacht Tara sails beyond the Arctic Circle from July to October. Daylight will predominate in the Russian Arctic, and will gradually turn into clear nights lasting 12 hours starting late August. Tara will undergo some adaptations to protect the workspaces and scientific equipment from the cold.

Oyster World Rally 2013: Exploring the Pacific

May 06, 2013

It is exactly four months since the beginning of the first Oyster World Rally. The Oyster fleet left Antigua on 6 January and the amazing blue water cruisers have recently arrived in the breath-taking yacht charter destination – the South Pacific. French Polynesia is about 6,500 miles from Antigua, as the crow flies, but the Oyster World Rally is an adventure that has seen the fleet explore plenty of spectacular locations along the way.

Oyster World Rally 2013 Exploring the Pacific

Oyster World Rally 2013: Exploring the Pacific

After leaving the Galapagos Islands, the next Oyster fleet rendezvous was the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. With a population of less than 9,000 people spread across 15 islands, The Marquesas are remote indeed. Joe Torcivia sailing with Michael Yokell’s Oyster 56 sailing yacht Quester describes the arrival in The Marquesas.

“Fatu Hiva is one of the least populated islands in the Marquesas chain and only gets about 500 visitors per year, mostly from cruising yachts.” Explained Joe. “There are no restaurants, hotels, shops or really anything besides a few locals playing in the water enjoying a game of volleyball!

“Once ashore, we ran into the crew from Pearl of Persia, Chinook, In Flagranti and Purusha. They were taking a hike up to a waterfall, so I hustled up the trail. After about 40 minutes, we broke through the thick rainforest to find a picturesque waterfall, cascading down 200ft into a rock pool. A gentleman off the Pearl of Persia interrupted this fantastic view as he stripped down to his birthday suit and cannonballed into the water – so much for the perfect picture! But after a good laugh, we all jumped in (keeping our bathing suits on) and enjoyed the refreshing water.

“We’re leaving tomorrow to head over to another island in the chain, Hiva Oa, for a few days. From there we will come back to Fatu Hiva, where Oyster has arranged for a welcome party for the boats that have made the trip. We are all looking forward to hearing the stories from the past few weeks as everyone recounts their most memorable moments, good and bad, that happened during the sail across the largest stretch of the Pacific.”

After making for Tahiti, the majority of the Oyster fleet are now heading to Bora Bora. The volcanic mountainous atoll of islands, with Bora Bora at the centre, is renowned for spectacular lagoons and beautiful coral reefs, there are no indigenous mammals on land but in contrast numerous species of birds thrive there including; black-winged petrels, Pacific swallow, and the white tern.

Marine life abounds around the waters of Bora Bora: red snapper, jackfish, and lemon sharks are found in the amazing reefs and sea turtles, dolphins and migrating humpback whales are frequently spotted but perhaps Bora Bora is most famous for an abundant ray population including: leopard, eagle and the huge manta ray.

First Mate on Oyster 885 superyacht Lush Audrey Jameson describes the trip and the scenery in the remote South Pacific.

“After 3,400 miles and nearly 15 days at sea, we arrived in French Polynesia. This Pacific crossing certainly was a great adventure and the amazing thing is there’s still so much more to this ocean. When you initially look at a map of the pacific you just see a massive ocean and then looking closer you notice a load of tiny dots. Well, we’re on one of those dots now and will be sailing between those dots for the next four months until we reach Australia in August.

Oyster yacht owners enjoying the Pacific

Oyster yacht owners enjoying the Pacific

“There are roughly 20,000 islands in the Pacific, most of which are in this southwest region. Needless to say we’ll make a good stab at exploring these islands but 20,000 of them… well you’d need to be here for a whole lifetime to get around them all and even at that it wouldn’t be an easy task!

“Wow, we are going have some fun sailing around here; discovering awesome anchorages and villages, meeting the islanders, getting to know their culture and geography and finally disappearing west back over the horizon”.

The South Pacific is one of the most beautiful places on earth, however the remoteness of the islands means that maintenance of yachts is fraught with logistics. As always, Oyster World Rally Project Manager, Debbie Johnson and Oyster Technical Support Manager, Eddie Scougall are with the fleet in French Polynesia to assist in any way possible.

Alan and Sue Brook’s Oyster 56 yacht Sulana was a late entry for the Oyster World Rally but after decades of service as Managing Director of Oyster and thousands of sea miles, Alan knows too well how important it is to have a well built yacht for such an adventure.

“Most people had 18 months to prepare for the Oyster World Rally, we had 24 hours!” Explained Sue Brook. “I have very little experience offshore and I would only contemplate such a journey on an Oyster. Sulana is in perfect condition, it really came down to whether I was mentally prepared to go and whether our family was happy for us to leave them. Our daughter was expecting a baby, for which I anticipated returning home to be with her, and we are now delighted to announce the birth of our Grandson Blake who arrived at a healthy 8lb 4oz.”

Alan Brook was full of praise for the diligent preparation for the event, especially the 1,000 page Oyster World Rally Guide, which took two years to formulate.

“Oyster have gone to enormous lengths in their preparations and when I start looking at the attention to detail in the guide I have been really impressed, the tips and tricks are really useful including downwind trimming, watch keeping let alone all the other issues of sailing to so many different places.”

Here is a video from on board Oyster 885 superyacht Lush from Captain, Paul Adamson, which was filmed 2,000 miles into the South Pacific:
