The rebuild of sailing yacht Britannia launched on Kickstarter

October 25, 2012

Sailing yacht Britannia was the most famous racing yacht in the world at the turn of the last century and now K1 Britannia are re-building this prestigious J Class sailing yacht at her former home in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The design and engineering of the new Britannia, the famous yacht originally owned by King George V, son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert will be one of Kickstarters first projects, when it goes live in the UK on October 31st 2012.

Over the course of the next 40 days, through the Kickstarter funding site, sailing enthusiasts, those with a passion for heritage, and philanthropic individuals and organisations who are keen to be involved with this unique project will have a short window of opportunity to make history.

Since Kickstarter’s launch on April 28, 2009, in the US over $350 million has been pledged through the site by more than 2.5 million people; funding above 30,000 creative projects. With each pledge to support the Britannia project supporters will receive a wonderful reward that’s been uniquely designed and crafted by the rebuild team and/or the opportunity to be part of her new life when she is completed.

Rewards range from original sketches and blueprints to rigging blocks, crew clothing, beautiful landing mats and oil paintings by world renowned marine artists; everything is custom made, and there is something for everyone. The limited edition rewards at the higher end include experiences aboard the finished yacht Britannia on sailing days during her first regattas in Monaco, Cannes, the UK and Caribbean, where she will race for charity, and the opportunity to dine aboard Britannia with her Captain and Officers.

What makes this project so special is Britannia’s charitable purpose. She will be used for maritime education, programs for veterans, and gifted to 80 – 100 charities a year as a marvelous floating venue for fundraisers and events. Britannia will reclaim a lost piece of maritime history and rekindle memories of a world where nobility and honour were the norm.

Sailing yacht Britannia is now being stripped and prepared for her refit at Venture Quays in East Cowes. Upon completion in 15 months’ time she will be launched with an overall length of 52m and a staggeringly tall 55m mast; the tallest wooden mast in the world!

“Britannia shares her noble heritage and her history with the people of the United Kingdom,” said Scott Ward, founder of K1 Britannia, the company behind the rebuild. “By putting her design and engineering on Kickstarter to be crowd funded we are giving people a chance to share in the experience of bringing this part of history back to life.”

The spirit of this project is all about “Gifting Britannia to the People”; it is a project that reclaims a piece of maritime history and elevates charitable giving globally. With Kickstarter’s help, the design and engineering of Britannia will be completed to the standard and specification that made her one of the most incredible vessels in the world.

In order to complete the design of the interior, special materials will need to be acquired, a full laser scan of the interior and exterior of the hull must be rendered and skilled craftsman will dedicate many hours of their time creating each individual piece on board.

“All of us at K1 Britannia cannot wait to see her sail go up, and to witness the beginning of her new life at sea,” said Scott Ward of K1 Britannia. “We need your help to finish this incredible project. Make a pledge today, and take home a reward and part of the spirit of the Britannia project.”

October 24, 2012

As announced previously her visit will see the installation of a new 3m stern extension with naval architecture by megayacht m5 (ex Mirabella V)’s original designers Ron Holland Design. The new composite stern manufactured by Green Marine is now in place with the post-cure scheduled to commence shortly. In conjunction with this, a significant amount of new open deck area has been added aft of the communications arch on the top deck (known as the flybridge) which is also undergoing remodelling. Once completed, these new areas will add a significant amount of flexible social space to the exterior of m5.

Further structural changes also include the installation of a new side boarding platform, extending out from the port hull to water level. The splash mould has left Pendennis and is currently with the door manufacturer for construction. The aperture in the hull is scheduled be cut this month in preparation for the new door structure to be bonded in. The hull and superstructure of the 75m superyacht m5 will be undergoing a full repaint over the next few months by the Pendennis in-house paint team. Preparation work for this large scale operation has already started, with areas not undergoing structural modifications primed ready for the new paint system.

The flybridge furniture which was previously made from moulded composite has now been removed in preparation for a new flexible furnishing option to be fitted. In the main living areas, the Owner’s quarters and main saloon as well as lower deck guest suites have mostly been stripped out in preparation for new interiors designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon and manufactured by Pendennis in conjunction with SINZ (SuperYacht Interiors, New Zealand). Work on installing these will start during November.

The programme of engineering work running alongside this schedule is also substantial. Most equipment in the engine room and technical spaces has been removed, with large shipping holes created in the decks to hoist equipment from the depths of the M5 yacht. Pendennis is replacing all primary systems including new main engines, generators, shore power units, and switchboards. There is also an overhaul of all other systems with major rewiring currently taking place in preparation for this major upgrade.

As the project progresses over the next few months, luxury yacht m5 will be re-born, modernised and upgraded throughout, providing a truly impressive cruising experience for all that board her.

October 18, 2012

The prominent Dutch builder, Moonen Shipyards, has signed the contract for an extensive refit of the motor yacht Rusalina. Originally launched in 1992 under the name Xanadu, Rusalina superyacht is a classic example of a Moonen 83 vessel. “We are delighted that the owners of Rusalina chose to have this work carried out at Moonen,” explains Niek van Twillert, head of design and development. “The yacht had a refit at another yard several years ago but the owners decided that the only place where they could be sure of a premium outcome was at Moonen. Jan Tielemans, who leads our after-sales service team, travelled to Moscow recently to inspect Rusalina. This enabled us to give a very accurate estimate of the work that needs carrying out, ensuring that the owners can embark on this project with complete confidence.”

The activities will include a comprehensive exterior paint job, the laying of new teak decks, an extensive engine and generator overhaul, and the fitting of new stainless steel features such as anchor pockets and windscreen. Rusalina superyacht will also be given new windows and is sure to look as good as new by the time the refit is completed. The interior work will be comprised of system maintenance, the installation of new navigation & communication equipment and a range of cosmetic upgrades.

Therefore the Tognum Group subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen has an office directly at the shipyard.
