40m Motor Yacht Imperial Princess (hull no.1) by Princess Yachts Building UP to a Spring Launch

February 08, 2012

The 40m motor yacht Imperial Princess by Princess Yachts is the longest production vessel ever made in Britain, with the largest resin-infused hull ever moulded. With a lovely interior by renowned London-based studio, Bannenberg & Rowell, the new Imperial Princess superyacht promises to make quite a splash when she is launched in the Spring. She is in the final stages of build in a brand new, purpose-built assembly hangar in Plymouth’s historic South Yard.

Combining an impressive gross tonnage, with a sleek and purposeful profile, the 40m luxury yacht Imperial Princess will offer six-star accommodation for up to 12 guests, with well-appointed cabins for up to eight crew and the largest internal volume in her class. Everything about this stunning vessel is measured in superlatives, from its massive 230kg anchors at the bow to the voluminous garage in the stern, which has space not just for a 6.2-metre tender, but for two personal watercraft as well.

Within the elegant parameters of the super yacht Imperial Princess’ hull and superstructure, owners of course have carte blanche to create the vessel of their dreams – no two will ever be alike. There is an impressive variety of layout options to choose from either four or five guest cabins on the lower deck, for example and you can choose to have a cinema instead of one of the midships cabins down below, and a gym in place of the other one.

The focal point of the Imperial Princess yacht will undoubtedly be the magnificent main deck with a beautifully appointed saloon and formal dining area surrounded by vast windows and hydraulically folding balconies on both sides of the saloon which are fitted as standard. Forward of the main deck is the owner’s suite, occupying the full beam of the hull as the side decks are raised at this point. The suite is accessed through a versatile ante-room which can be specified as an office, private TV room, a reading room or to suit the owner’s personal requirements. Forward, an opulent single or matching pair of bathrooms is accessed off the dressing area which also features two substantial walk-in wardrobes.

On the third deck there is an elegant ‘sky lounge’ and an additional exterior dining area for private drinks and dinners and a curved stairway leads up to the palatial Sun Deck complete with extensive bar, seating, sunbathing and an huge spa tub.

The enormous professional galley was designed to the exacting brief of a professional chef and is impressively equipped with two catering-size fridge-freezers, a hot and cold chef’s pass and a huge pantry. To ensure everything is served swiftly and easily there is even a dumb-waiter which runs from the main deck to both the upper deck and Sun Deck above, “It’s safe to say that this is the most demanding project we’ve ever worked on!” smiles Princess Director of Creative Design, Sarah Verey. “The first 40M has occupied a huge proportion of the team for well over a year so far – and of course we’ve already produced layouts for the second one.”

The first of these magnificent yachts will have an interior designed by Princess in collaboration with the London studio of Bannenberg & Rowell. The owner has selected the five-cabin option, with two VIP staterooms and two twin-berth en-suites down below. The interior is a classic confection of contrasting tones, textures and surfaces, full of visual and tactile treats, set off to perfection by the huge areas of window, which will fill both the main deck and accommodation areas with daylight.

“We’re introducing several new timbers on this boat,” says Verey. “Macassar ebony has been selected for the dining and coffee tables, for example – cut to produce a unique starburst grain effect to the coffee table. We’re also having the main deck’s walnut sideboard doors specially made in a herringbone grain pattern.”

The yacht’s principal decorative scheme features horizontal-grained satin walnut bulkheads, wenge flooring on the main deck, and walnut flooring on the sky deck. Signature pieces include the impressive, full-height, etched-metal mural by Christofle in the dining room, and there is an eye-catching abstract created from hand-painted and lacquered panels on the forward bulkhead of the sky lounge.

“We have also used various granites and stones – actually they’re lightweight, stone-faced aluminium honeycomb panels – as contrasting features in floors, bulkheads and worktops. The ‘mocha crème’ limestone in particular has a real visual warmth, and contrasts beautifully with the Bisazza mosaic tiles on the floor,” adds Verey. “It looks wonderful.”

Imperial Princess Superyacht Master Suite

The wheelhouse is equally impressive with a vast ‘glass bridge’ incorporating the control and monitoring system in a stunning console and the captain’s cabin is also situated here adjourning the helm. Power comes from a pair of nine-ton MTU 12V diesels, which will propel her to speeds of up to 22 knots. Two 80kW generators share the machinery space, where the automatic fuel handling system is sensitive not just to the needs of the engine and generators, but to the trim of the hull as well.

The 40m yacht Imperial Princess has been designed and built using some of the most advanced technologies and techniques seen in boat building today from state-of-the-art Computer Fluid Dynamics ensuring the even most intricate of detail is considered prior to any tooling being made, to the highly developed resin infusion process to produce the hull and entire superstructure which provides significant benefits to vessel weight and rigidity so improving overall performance and efficiency.

With class leading levels of standard specification throughout, this genuine tri-deck, semi-custom superyacht, is not only a dramatic new chapter for Princess but for Plymouth’s historic shipbuilding heart too and represents a culmination of the skills and passion of one of Europe’s most experienced boatyards.

It is truly a landmark project – not just for Princess Yachts, but for British yacht-building.

CMN 65m Superyacht ONE: an “Avant-garde” yacht Project

February 08, 2012

Previewed at the 2011 Abu Dhabi Yacht Show, the 65m motor yacht ONE is a concept developed by France-based CMN shipyard. Created by CMN´s in-house design team, the new ONE superyacht features an interior space normally found on much larger vessels.

CMN luxury motor yacht ONE

By her unique design, the luxury yacht ONE has the volume of much larger yachts of around 70 to 75-metres, allowing for a very high level of services but still offering the ability to reach remote places and to enter small harbours.

The CMN super yacht ONE features a vertical bow with a long foredeck and fluid exterior lines that contribute to her slender profile, while aiding to the practical operation of the vessel, confirmed by extensive tank testing. The foredeck can also accommodate a Eurocopter EC135 platform, with a lazarette located underneath that houses an open tender and an eight-metre limousine tender.

A total of 14 guests – including the Owner – can be accommodated across four guest suites on the main deck, two VIP suites on the upper deck next to the owner’s office, with the Owner’s suite situated adjacent to this, towards the aft of the yacht. This area is fully dedicated to the Owner and includes a large terrace with its private Jacuzzi. The dining room and main salon are situated on the main deck aft and include a bar and a wide entrance to the outside deck.

The general arrangement is in line with the new trends of on board living without compromising functionality. The use of the in-out arrangements provides a totally unique layout that allows for a living experience with the outside environment, the sea, the sky and the horizon. The interior layout also offers a massage room, a wine storage area, a hammam and a sauna amidships on the lower deck, with the crew mess, lounge and cabins forward.

87m super yacht Iwana designed by Alex McDiarmid

February 07, 2012

British Designer Alex McDiarmid, based in the South of France, presents his latest project, the 87m motor yacht Iwana. After her success at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show, the Iwana superyacht has grown by 2m and showcases a fresh thinking approach to her styling, while maintaining the classic bow.

The Chinese New Year of the Water Dragon is the year when the luxury yacht Iwana inspired by marine iguanas, lizards and water dragons was created. Recognising this link between marine iguanas, lizards and the Chinese Water Dragon, Iwana is a symbol of prosperity, much like owning a Superyacht.

The Dragon is the most auspicious and powerful of the 12 signs of the zodiac, one associated with high energy and prosperity. It’s also the only mythical and legendary creature in the Chinese astrological calender and is considered the luckiest year in the Chinese Zodiac.

This year is considered especially auspicious because it is the year of the Water Dragon and Chinese dragons traditionally symbolise potent and auspicious powers. The dragon is a symbol of power and superior control, a good symbol that represents change and mobility.

The 87m super yacht Iwana by McDiarmid Design

The 87m super yacht Iwana by McDiarmid Design

Main features of the super yacht Iwana:

The main superstructure takes its form from the head of a Dragon while the decks and communication tower are inspired by the dorsal crests of Dragons and beautiful marine iguanas.

Similar to panoramic roof windows on modern cars, the super structure integrates a full length, panoramic roof window running over the Iwana yacht. This incorporates a solar panel system in the ‘Magic Smart Glass’. All glass on the vessel is electronically and colour switchable changeing instantly for privacy, sun/glare protection and visual entertainment.

There appears to be huge expanses of glass used in the yacht. Obviously due to current manufacturing capabilities, a one piece large glazing structure can not be viably produced. Therefore an automotive glazing and bodywork technique is applied in ‘colourway break’. This in essence disguises the supporting structures behind the glass giving a visual impression of one continuous piece of material. The amount of natural daylight that enters the yacht is on another scale altogether.

McDiarmid designed 87m luxury yacht Iwana - rear view

In order to extend and maximise deck space aft, the hull opens into two, fold down, roll out, and wrap around bathing platforms. The inspiration for this comes from the sun loving, hood expanding, frill-necked lizards in hot countries. The platform incorporates part of the aft hull window turning into a partial glass bottomed floor allowing for the observation of underwater marine life and habitats. Owner decided, A-symmetrical fold out beach platform and seperate tender garage is a possibility as with many features on the Iwana yacht.

On the main deck, a social and relaxation zone, a swimming pool aft gives uninterupted views of the sea and sun bathing for guests. A jacuzzi located on the owners private dinning deck gives spectacular views from the yacht and plenty of room for invited guests. The upper deck sees a very private retreat for the owner inaddition to the private dinning deck. We have not cluttered the decks with excess furniture prefering to keep things simple.

Lighting is subtle around the superstructure, stairs and decks. The superstructure appears to float aft with lighting recessed at the base and a series of features cut into the structure. This along with the three main ‘window slashes’ cut into the superstructure and once lit at 100% gives for a spectacular scene. The wrap around underwater hull effect is of course an option.

The transom and/or tender garage can hold a personal submersible housed longitudinally, craned out, rotated 90° once clear of the transom door and then winch lowered into the water. Custom tenders and toys are under development matching the exterior styling and livery of the Iwana yacht. Water toys include waverunners, sea scooters, windsurfers, kayaks, waterskis, wakeboards and a whole range of scuba and fishing gear are standard.

Iwana featuring SeaBird personal submersible:

US based AquaVenture Water Crafts are makers of the fastest personal submersible in the world and Alex McDiarmid is proud to feature a very unique product with his project.

Company Founder and President Richard Maurer comments: “SeaBird’s patent-pending tow system facilitates unprecedented performance as its propulsion is derived from a surface towing vessel. This in essence delivers the power of internal combustion to an underwater vessel. SeaBird is controlled with a joystick from either of its two seats and can maneuver as aggressively as a jet fighter or transport you beneath the surface in a ride as smooth as a Rolls Royce. It can maneuver anywhere within a large cone behind its towing vessel while performing rapid 360 degree rolls, traveling straight up, or diving down steeper than most roller coasters. It will be certified to a submerged speed of 22 knots and a maximum depth of 91 meters.”

85m motor yacht AMARANTH by Bicube Design

February 07, 2012

The 85m motor yacht Amaranth was created by the Italian studio, Bicube Design, founded in 2006. The Amaranth superyacht features very strong as well as aggressive styling, which contributes to her organic and elegant profile.

The luxury motor yacht Amaranth concept by Bicube Design

The 85m luxury motor yacht Amaranth concept by Bicube Design

The design motion is highlighted by the stretched arch encompassing the sun deck and neatly caps the top of the super yacht Amaranth, recalling some of the Santiago Calatrava´s architecture.

What is striking and also exciting, are the volumes created on the sides of the yacht: the space between decks reseble ribbons, starting from the stern and approaching the large central pillar without interruption, before falling away as if they were waves carved by the wind. This creates shades of the light and shadow, enhanced by the silver colour of the superstructure.

Great attention was also paid to the shape of the windows. They create contrasts that emphasise the strong character of the luxury yacht Amaranth and provide the interior living areas with plenty of light, while ensuring privacy.

The Owner´s suite takes up an area of 160 square metres on the upper deck, with a large window offering a view of almost 270 degrees. The suite also boasts a wide prvate terrace with whirlpool, while guest accommodation consists of five VIP en suite cabins with walk-in closets.

The Amaranth Superyacht by Bicube Design

The Amaranth Superyacht by Bicube Design

Large areas of the Amaranth yacht are dedicated to conviviality with full-beam living rooms, dining room and casino. Leisure facilities with include a cinema, gym with sauna and steam bath, while a large garage can accommodate numerous water toys and two 12-metre yacht tenders.

The sun deck has been designed to accommodate a touch-and-go helipad which doubles as a sun terrace or for exclusive yet private dining, even in ports crowded with onlookers.

The mega yacht Amaranth is expected to be constructed from steel and aluminium, with an original system of modular division for the interior – a solution that allows greater flexibility to satisfy various Owner requirements, while reducing the overall weight of structural parts and thus limiting the costs. A diesel-electric propulsion system of Amaranth is envisaged for economical consumption.

Phillipe Briand designed 174´ Flybridge Ketch Sailing Yacht

February 07, 2012

The 174’ ketch sailing yacht, designed by London-based Philippe Briand, is a sleek and welcoming yacht that is also sensitive to sail. The real beauty of the 174´ Briand superyacht´s hull shape comes from its balance and specifically from the length of the foredeck.

Phillipe Briand designed 174´ Flybridge Ketch Sailing Yacht

Phillipe Briand designed 174´ Flybridge Ketch Sailing Yacht

The two yacht tenders are housed underneath. Although the 174´ Briand luxury yacht has a flybridge, the vessel is sleek due to a very interesting integration of its different decks. The sides of the superstructure are window panels that open and create an indoor/outdoor area of 140 m².

The 174´ Briand sailing yacht is a superb sailing platform. Under sail she is expected to reach speeds of 20 knots. These speeds are achieved through her long waterline, a well calculated hull but predominantly through her impressive roached main and mizzen sails. The sail area is maximised where the wind velocity is greater and provides extra driving force. Therefore runners are used in instead of permanent backstays. She is fitted with a lifting keel and has draft of 4.5m when the keel is up and 8.3m when down.

The 174´ Briand Superyacht

The 174´ Briand Superyacht

Sleek
The first aim of the Designer was to design an elegant yacht. The 174´ Briand superyacht´s lines are such because of her long waterline and very clean, slightly curved but stretched sheerline. She also has an almost vertical bow which allows for a greater waterline length, thus making for a considerable improvement in speed both under sail and engine power.

The real beauty of the hull shape comes from its balance and specifically from the distance between the main mast and the bow of the boat. Although she has a flybridge, the external height has been reduced to a minimum through a very interesting integration of the different decks of the yacht.

Similar to the sailing yacht Vertigo, and as Philippe has already proven the benefits of, the 174 incorporates the large wrap around windows, all of which fully open to allow in as much natural light as possible. To keep the fordeck flush and uncluttered, the two tenders are stored out of sight, beneath the deck.

Sail Plan of the 174´ Briand luxury yacht

Sail Plan of the 174´ Briand luxury yacht

Welcoming
Particular care has been given to the exterior relaxing areas, such as the salon and fly bridge, affording the possibility to be outside and sheltered as one wishes.

The aft cockpit is especially well protected by a large hard top (that incorporates an opening louvre system) and by lateral sliding windows. The whole area can be protected whilst opened at the same time. The flybridge is open but on demand it can be protected by a removable bimini top and a large dodger.

Inside the 174´ Briand yacht is extremely comfortable; light floods in all around, as Briand intended, especially in the saloon on the main deck. The sides of the superstructure are transparent, bringing the outside into the saloon. The perfect integration of deck saloon and cockpit create a seamless living area 140 m².

On the lower deck, positioned aft to increase privacy, is a superb Owners stateroom with direct access to the lazarette and swim platform. There are an additional 4 guest rooms forward. There is accommodation for a crew of 10.

Sensitive to sail
This 174’ flybridge yacht is a superb sailing platform. Under sail she is expected to reach speeds of almost 20 knots in a reach with a true wind speed of 20 knots. Also, with light winds less than 10 knots, she will outperform most sailing yachts. These speeds are achieved thanks to her long waterline, low drag hull but predominantly through her generous sail plan area.
