Vicem Yachts Signs Wetzels Brown & Partners and Ken Freivokh for 32 and 35m Vulcan Line

February 19, 2011

Vicem Yachts is expanding its horizons beyond mahogany into high-tech composite construction with three new sleek, fast super yachts in the Vulcan Line, the Vulcan 46, Vulcan 35 and the Vulcan 32 m. For these Vulcan mega-yachts the Turkish yard signs two additional agreements with Wetzels Brown & Partners and Ken Freivokh. The Wetzels Brown Dutch design team will be involved in the interior design of the Vulcan 32 mt RPH. The UK based Freivokh team will develop the 35 mt Tri-Deck interior design works. Art-Line has been involved with the 46 meter yacht since its inception.

“We want a reputation as a builder of light, beautiful and fast hulls” says Alberto Perrone Da Zara – Vicem Yachts CEO – “Vicem is entering the super-yacht segment with serious ambitions and with no compromise/highest quality building materials and technologies that compares favorably to orthern Europe Shipyards.” The super-yacht Vulcan Line can already count on Naval Architect Frank Mulder for hulls and exteriors and noted interior designs firm Art-Line. “On boats of this size, with such high expectations of performance, the choice of the ‘right’ naval architect and top class interior designers is essential to the success of the Vulcan line. All these yachts will be launched between 2011 and 2012”. Ultimately for Alberto Perrone Da Zara in an industry that is closely dependent on meticulous hands-on labour, Turkish builders provide a tangible advantage. “People are fed up with the variations in quality of the Far East and labour rates in the EU and North America are sky high” he claims, going on to say that “Turkish shipyards will only get better, marrying high quality design, building and engineering with affordability”.

About Vicem – The Yacht for Yachtsmen

Since the company was founded in 1991, Vicem Yachts has been always focusing on three core values: total customization, impeccable craftsmanship and timeless design. The Vicem Vintage Line (Classic and Fly Bridge models, from 52’ to 75’; the Cruiser 78′ and 92′) is built using the cold-molded process. A construction technique which embodies all the construction methods of the Turkish historical marine tradition; a modern procedure different from traditional boat building. Based on engineered wood construction, cold-molding uses laminated mahogany (coming from managed forests) and a specific formulated epoxy resin to create the hull, decks and principal superstructures. This results in a stronger and quieter vessel with a smoother ride, with natural insulation from humidity and noise. In 2009, Vicem Yachts extended its production to the mega-yacht segment, introducing the new Vulcan Line with the 46m & 35m Tri-deck and the 32m RPH. All three are currently under construction (all under construction and to be delivered in 2011). Vanguard 45 and 33 compose it’s all new third line of open yachts, a perfect blend of timeless elegance, performing naval architecture and state of the art production technology.

Viareggio hosts first Yachting After sales & Refit Exhibition (YARE)

February 08, 2011

From March 31st to April 2nd Coppino Street and the inner basins of Viareggio will host YARE – Yachting After sales & Refit Exhibition, the first international boat show committed to all the services following the purchase of a yacht.

During three days Viareggio will be an important capital of boating industry, thanks to this event aimed to all the industry operators, from builders to brokerage agencies, from designers to suppliers, from registers to marinas.

YARE is the result of a strong action started from Viareggio Community in joint-venture with Lucca Province, Trade Chamber, Lucca Industry Association, Handicraft Association and with the support of  the Tuscany Region to contrast the actual difficulties of the sector. The “After Sales” services can represent an interesting answer to sustain the sector and sailing and motor yacht refitting can become a new “core business” of many a Tuscan yard, which are traditionally the most organised and technically efficient in the Italian landscape.

To internationally support YARE, the exhibition established a co-operation with the British Publishing Company The Yacht Report, which is organising the second edition of the Italian Superyacht Forum jointly with YARE with the same formula very successfully experimented for 16 years in Amsterdam in conjunction with METS:

Viareggio is the hub of the Tuscan yachting industry and represents a strategic reference point for the world industry. History, high professionalism, high quality of the building are the ingredients that made the success of this area, being able to match tradition and innovation. From this cradle is born YARE. An international technical event, unique in its formula, over passing the simple boat exhibition, to rather boost the industry and develop all the potential of the local yards.

YARE is aiming to all the operators of the supply chain of refitting activities, to brokerage and charter agencies, to surveyors and designers, to crew recruitment agencies, to registers, to marinas, but also to shipping agencies. All these will be the protagonists of an event that has the ambition to become a strategic rendez-vous for the industry. YARE is working actually to start a co-operation in the next coming years with Seatec, the other specific event organised by the nearby Marina di Carrara fair dedicated to technology, components, accessories, in order to create a larger event all dedicated to technology and work. The aim is to concentrate in this part of Mediterranean Sea a strong offer of events for international markets identifying the area as a strategic hub.

YARE March 31st – April 2nd

The first YARE edition will take place from March 31st to April 2nd. It will be a three day meeting during which the boatyards and the side activities will open their gates and their sheds. During the event are previewed also visits to some Massa, Pisa and Livorno facilities. There will be also an in-water exposition of good examples of refitting and of yachts in charter. YARE is organised by MarEventi, a leading company in in-water events organisation like “Viareggio Mare” in Viareggio and “NavigaMi” on the inland waters of Milano

Feature Superyacht: Calliope Yacht

January 21, 2011

Calliope Yacht is a 42 metre Holland Jachtbouw superyacht with customised grace and form which was built to Lloyds and MCA regulations in Holland. She is an all-aluminium ‘gentlemen’s yacht’ with a cruising speed of around 15.5 knots as launched in 2010. Her exterior design and naval architecture as created by Bill Langan Design Associates which is a yacht design firm based in Newport, Rhode Island which specialises in designing unique yachts for special clients. Yacht Calliope also had her interior design, which features weathered limed oak, produced on the boards of Dick Young Designs.

Motor yacht Calliope was ordered by a repeat client and she is the second semi-displacement motor yacht commissioned by the same owners at Holland Jachtbouw. This particular yacht owner was one with yachting experience and with a very specific set of requirements in terms of customisation and quality. Indeed, the owner had no desire for compromise such as would enable taking the semi-custom or series yacht route. The yachting experience which has gone into Calliope means that she is a functional yacht which is very well suited to sue as a luxury charter yacht or as a private one.

Holland Jachtbouw Managing Director Paul Dielemans comments that: “The fact that this project will be built for an existing client is very satisfying. We are delighted when owners are so pleased with the quality and performance of their previous yacht that they choose to partner with us again. It is also a great chance for the yard to build upon an existing relationship and create a new yacht to the next level of sophistication, putting both the owner’s and our own experiences into practice.”

At just under 500 GT, the project matches Holland Jachtbouw’s preferred position in the superyacht market. “This type of fully customised powerboat puts clear water between our yard and the competition,” Dielemans continues. “Along with the recent order of the 62-metre schooner Athos, it shows that Holland Jachtbouw’s business plan is in sync with the demands of sailing and motor yacht connoisseurs alike. Moreover, our state-of-the-art new facilities will be used to the utmost efficiency when opened in September 2007.”

The first yacht owner by the owner of Calliope was the 32 metre flybridge cruiser called Cassiopeia which was launched to considerable acclaim in 2004. Both yachts are named after goddesses, with M/Y Calliope being the muse of music and epic poetry.

Timelessly stylish both inside and out, the Calliope yacht has been built and finished to a remarkable standard of quality. With her Bill Langan design, Rhoades Young interior and major input from an experienced owner, this fully customised powerboat impresses in every way.

Some of the Key Facets of Motor Yacht Calliope Include:

Relaxation and comfort :
Interior designer Rhoades Young devised an exceptionally relaxed lounge and dining area on the main deck, with a hidden sliding shoji screen to split the two spaces when intimate dining is required. Located forward, the owners’ stateroom includes a private library, full beam lounge and his & her bathrooms with dressing rooms. This splendid area is flooded with natural light and has a strong visual connection with the outside world.

Yachting Experience:
Launched in the summer of 2010, the 42-metre Calliope is an exceptional semi-displacement motor yacht. Commissioned by repeat clients, she combines all her owners’ rich cruising experiences onboard Cassiopeia with the very latest thinking in superyacht construction. Innovative demands in terms of customisation and quality included a highly specified and fully integrated bridge.

Aluminium Construction:
Calliope is an all-aluminium ‘gentlemen’s yacht’ offers comfort and style in equal measure. Calliope‘s elegant modern-classic interior is finished in weathered limed oak, which contrasts elegant classical architecture with a range of modern furniture. One of the most impressive features is the offset reverse spiral staircases, which dynamically connect all three decks. Panoramic views up through the sweeping undersides of the steps make this a striking centrepiece to the yacht and make her into an ideal charter platform.

Customisation:
Teak is the predominant word on superyacht Calliope’s bridge deck, with the sky lounge making the most of the full beam. With the large sliding doors open to the aft deck, the entire deck and saloon blend into a united ‘inside-out’ zone that is ideal for informal leisure at anchor.  Designed and built to Lloyds and MCA classification, Calliope reaffirms that Holland Jachtbouw is eminently capable of creating bespoke motoryachts of the highest calibre.

40m Sailing yacht ZanZiba in build at Archipelago Yachts

January 18, 2011

Archipelago Yachts in Bodrum, Turkey, has announced that it has a 40‐metre, modern classic schooner called sailing yacht ZanZiba in build, with the launch scheduled for the autumn of this year. This distinctive and unusual project is characterised by a light and exceptionally spacious interior that is unusual in traditional‐style wooden craft, and its six double / twin, en‐suite guest cabins give it the scale of accommodation more often found on motor rather than sailing yachts of this size.

S/Y ZanZiba features naval architecture by Alparslan Tekogul, supported by Paul Spooner of Fairlie Restorations. Exterior and interior styling is by David Wright Design.

Christened ZanZiba by its British owner, the plan is that this be the first in a series of such yachts. “The intention is to create a worldwide cruising yacht that combines the charm of a traditional schooner design with the discreet application of the latest in marine and lifestyle technology,” the owner is quoted as saying. “She will evoke an earlier age of adventurous Mediterranean and tropical voyaging, but without the accompanying hardships.”

The modern systems on board yacht ZanZiba referred to include everything from air conditioning, CCTV, WiFi and a full Lantic entertainment system to NavTec rod rigging, Stratis™ sails by Doyle, hydraulic winches by Lewmar and Harken and comprehensive navigation, electrical and hotel systems.

The accommodation is spread over two decks, with a spacious deckhouse containing the saloon and covered dining area offering spectacular views, and a lower deck with the guest cabins, crew quarters and service areas.

The owner of ZanZiba  yacht has deliberately forgone the usual route of having a full‐width owners’ suite and has instead chosen a design that allows for six, en‐suite guest cabins ‐ two master doubles, two master twins, one double with an additional single bunk and a twin with a Pullman berth. This configuration allows him to entertain a substantial group of family or friends, as well as making sailing yacht ZanZiba a desirable charter vessel. The crew quarters are situated aft of the engine room and have berths for eight crew plus a mess area.

The interior design can be described as colonial in style with teak, burr oak and zebrano veneers accented by bronze and nickel fittings to create a rich effect dominated by natural tones reminiscent of an earlier and more leisured era. Use of woven rattan and leather add to the overall impression of natural luxury and tactile, three‐dimensional textures.

The hull of ZanZiba is being built using the cold‐moulding process, by which a laminate hull is built up using thin, resin‐infused wood planking. The result is a rigid structure with an excellent strength to weight ratio, and one that requires little maintenance being both impenetrable to marine parasites and proof from osmosis.

“We are delighted with the rapid progress that is being made,” the owner commented further, “and the quality of the finish is truly excellent. When she is completed she will undoubtedly stand out as a lifestyle cruising superyacht that combines the best in maritime traditions with modern building techniques and equipment.”

112m Superyacht Centurion Design by Sigmund Yacht Design

January 15, 2011

Motor yacht Centurion is a striking 112-metre concept launched at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show by the newly established Sigmund Yacht Design based in Vienna, Austria. Following the presentation of 98-metre Sigmund at Monaco in 2009, studio director and founder Peter Symonds teamed up with Olivier Dorrell, a joint partner in Totti Design, which specialises in tender design. Together they hope to push into the superyacht market under the Sigmund Yacht Design brand with the aim of “attracting clients and owners to advanced design and forward thinking.”

The futuristic and aggressive looking exterior incorporates complex, stealth-like angles into the surface to create an unusual faceted superstructure. Facet surface design, which yacht Centurion is the showcase for, is financially advantageous from a low volume production point of view. Although facet surfacing looks very stylish and modern, it also aims to keep finishing costs down. Curved surfaces are labour intensive on this scale of construction, whilst simple, small surfaces cut down the finishing involved.

The design combines elements of stealth with hard, aggressive lines and some innovative feature, explains Symonds, who has a background in the automobile industry (he won an ADI—Association of Italian Industrial design—award in 2006) and worked with Siddartha Yachts on large sail boats. “These include retractable bow thruster doors for extra efficiency and a flying superstructure (the three delta wings) with large windows for viewing the sea on the move.” Symonds claims that superyacht Centurion’s tumblehome hull has been adapted from a Sea Wraith II class destroyer hull concept, dramatically reducing slamming noise, vibration, longevity while improving sea-keeping as super-explorer vessel. The design also includes four custom tenders and a helipad in accordance with its long-range explorer vocation. With plans to attend the 2011 Abu Dhabi Yacht Show in March, Sigmund Yacht Design is already talking with an undisclosed American shipyard interested in joining forces.

S/Y Athena is built entirely of high-tensile Alustar and she is a giant which displaces a staggering 1,177 tons. Not only is she the largest but she has been created to the highest standards of traditional craftsmanship whilst incorporating inspiring technical achievement.

The refit of super yacht Athena is being carried out by Orams Marine Services. Established in 1947, Orams Marine Services have developed a reputation as a premium provider of building and maintenance services for all types of vessels. Orams Marine Services were the first company to bring a superyacht into New Zealand for an interior alteration and refit in 1987. Since then they have established themselves as a key player in New Zealand’s superyacht refit industry.

Managing director of Orams Marine Services Craig Park confirmed the exterior of sailing yacht Athena is being re-painted and the interior re-varnished. “It’s the biggest boat to be refitted in New Zealand,” he says. “It’s a full re-paint; it’s the first since the launch. It’s really a cosmetic re-fit although all five engines will be serviced.”

ATHENA’s three masts soar 197 feet above the deck supporting 28,632 square feet of sail. Her beauty is obvious, but yacht Athena is also the sort of marvel we have come to expect from Royal Huisman and the myriad Dutch industries pressed into service to ensure her timely delivery while meeting the owner’s demand for the highest quality.
