Sailing yacht Bequia is a splendid 27m (90ft) yawl, launched in 2009 as the first superyacht designed by Stephens Waring Yacht Design. At the recent Pendennis Cup, Bequia superyacht has been tearing up the English Channel in the company of some other classic yachts, old and new. Pendennis Cup is a five-day gala event in Falmouth, England, organised by the renowned Pendennis Shipyard.

Luxury yacht Bequia is a traditionally built yawl that epitomises Maine design and craftsmanship – the yacht has all the elegance of a Spirit of Tradition design without neglecting a few vital ‘mod cons’ such as a concealed anchor deployment system and a fold down boarding platform.

Seduced by the sleek lines and performance of the W-Class, owner Jes Staley approached Bob Stephens and Paul Waring with a concept for Bequia superyacht and the project became a close collaboration that involved both husband and wife.

In 2011 Bequia yacht competed in her first St Barths Bucket, she returned to St. Barth’s again in 2012, and each time successfully causing quite a stir with her great performance and good looks. She was the 2nd smallest in the superyacht fleet and made the headlines in Yachting World for her efforts.

Here are a few excerpts from Bequia’s very happy owner at the Pendennis Cup:

“Nothing like matching a 180ft schooner (Adela) on elapsed time!

The IRC rating continues to favor the old gaff rigs (Mariette and Mariquita), and quite frankly, it’s nice to let the old ladies in first. They are pretty and have been well sailed.

Bequia continues to do well, with the big chute helping in the lighter air.

If you look at elapsed times, the boat is sailing well, and I’m beginning to feel sorry for the Hoek boat (Velacarina)…always docking just as we’re opening the beers!!

Deb is a champ with full foul weather gear on, but after Nova Scotia, Falmouth, and Sweden, Bequia will probably linger in warmer waters for a while. Lots of fun here, but Maine in November is warmer!!!

The more we live on Bequia, the more we sail and race her, the more the brilliance of your design comes through. Bequia is pound for pound the prettiest, fastest, and most comfortable classic on the water!”

Up next for Bequia yacht is a family cruise in Sweden, then down to Mallorca for a rest over the winter before a busy summer of cruises and regattas in the Mediterranean in 2013.
