Nestled midway between the popular Caribbean yacht charter locations – Guadeloupe and Martinique, the small island nation of Dominica is fast becoming an exclusive destination for luxury travellers. It has been recently ranked one of the top ten ethical countries in the world by Ethical Traveller.

Whilst destinations such as Barbados and The Bahamas continue to be hugely popular, Dominica’s unspoiled natural beauty is proving a hit with travellers.

Hubert J. Winston, owner and managing director of Dominica Yacht Services, a destination management company spoke to Yachting Pages and said, “We have seen a steady increase in yachting arrivals into the ports of Roseau and Portsmouth every year for the last ten years. Business is great; we had a wonderful season and are already looking forward to 2015.”

Known as ‘Nature’s Island’, Dominica’s tropical rainforests, one of which is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites, cover two thirds of the island and are home to 1,200 plant species. With an abundance of rivers, lakes, streams, and waterfalls visitors are never far away from nature at its best.

Hubert continued, “We focus on eco-tours because just travelling two minutes inland from the coast, you will find nature at its best. Dominica is truly a unique island. Visitors can take a high-energy hike up to our famous boiling lake and see a host of remote waterfalls including Victoria Falls, or opt for a more leisurely journey to the Trafalgar Falls or the Emerald Pool. You can even experience the beauty of Dominica’s verdant forests by taking a flora and fauna tour. There really is something for everyone.”

Not to be confused with its larger northerly sister, the Dominican Republic, Dominica sits midway between Guadeloupe and Martinique. At just 289 square miles, the majority of the island’s population resides in and around the port area of Roseau.

It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, still being formed by geothermal-volcanic activity, as evidenced by the world’s second-largest hot spring, Boiling Lake. Dominica is the only country in the world with a count of 365 rivers.
