Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX), January 9 – 12, 2014

May 13, 2013

The dates for the 2014 Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) have been revealed. The ‘Asia’s favourite boat show’ will run at Royal Phuket Marina from 9th to 12th January, 2014.

After two years holding the event in March, PIMEX returns to its previous timing of January.

“Following feedback from the 10th anniversary show earlier this year, we have decided to return to the popular January slot after two years of being held in March,” said Andy Dowden, Show Director.

“The unseasonable heat during this year’s show was one of the factors for moving the date back to January, and the show’s opening times are planned to be adjusted to carry through to the evening.”

The leading consumer boat show in Asia, PIMEX has grown to become one of the most important events in the marine calendar, hotly anticipated by marine and lifestyle businesses from around Asia and the world each year.

PIMEX plays a central role in Thailand and Asia’s marine industry as a meeting place and a sales and marketing platform for marine leisure businesses. The show continues to generate sales and through a global marketing campaign raise awareness of Phuket, Thailand and beyond to an audience worldwide.

The gateway to marine leisure and boating in the region, the Andaman Triangle, consisting of Phang Nga and Krabi with Phuket at is centre, is often referred to as the Monaco of the East and has become the playground of the wealthy.

The annual marine and lifestyle event, which is an integral part of Phuket’s calendar and a key event on the Asian boat show circuit, will benefit from the many international visitors and villa owners spending the Christmas and New Year holidays on the Island.

“The January period is peak season on Phuket, and it is a time when luxury villa owners are often in residence, enjoying the Christmas and New Year holidays,” commented Dowden, adding “PIMEX will showcase the unique luxury and marine lifestyle that Phuket Island has to offer to an international audience of High Net Worth Individuals.”

On display at PIMEX 2014 will be a stunning array of yachts and equipment, luxury cars and goods, and some of the finest properties on the Island, set against a backdrop of marina-side cocktail parties and VIP functions held over four days from 9th to 12th January.

Yacht Solutions and Ital Thai Marine’s first dedicated superyacht facility in Bangkok, Thailand

April 16, 2013

By signing a Memorandum of Understanding, Yacht Solutions and Ital Thai Marine have agreed to join their forces to create Thailand’s first dedicated superyacht facility in Bangkok.

Yacht Solutions at Ital Thai Marine

Yacht Solutions at Ital Thai Marine

This joint venture brings together Thailand’s largest and most established shipbuilding company with Thailand’s most reputable and experienced superyacht refit company.

Yacht Solutions at Ital Thai Marine is being set up in response to the demand for more superyacht refit and repair facilities in the Asian region from both owners of superyachts based in Asia and those travelling from Europe and America.

Located near the mouth of the Chao Phraya River in Samut Prakam and easy to navigate in from the sea – Ital Thai Marine provides the perfect site. This deep water facility was needed by Yacht Solutions to cater for larger refit and build projects as well as shorter emergency and maintenance projects.

Its location, being in the vibrant city of Bangkok and only 45 minutes from Bangkok international airport (the transiting hub of Southeast Asia) is ideal because it is extremely appealing to owners, captains and crew due to the vast range of crew facilities close to hand.

Yacht Solutions at Ital Thai Marine is a 112,000 square metre facility offering full ship building and repair capabilities plus a bonded warehouse and in-house design office. Yacht Solutions at Ital Thai Marine is ISO 9001:2000 rated and boasts a lifting capacity up to 95 metres and 3,500 tonnes. It has access to two 115 metre dry docks, 300 metre alongside berthing, a floating dock up to 160 metres and 5000 tonnes lift capacity, making this the largest superyacht repair facility in Southeast Asia.

Gareth Twist, managing director of Yacht Solutions commented, “We have been in the marine refit and repair business in Thailand for over 10 years and we have been looking for a deep water facility for the last 2 years. We are very excited to be at Ital Thai Marine as this is the perfect site for us. Yacht Solutions at Ital Thai Marine expands our superyacht capabilities for hauling-out and opens up a great yard option for any resident yachts and superyachts passing through the Gulf of Thailand. This facility is accessible to all of Southeast Asia being less than 800 miles from Singapore. We are very excited with this partnership as it offers a natural progression for our business”.

The superyacht industry in Asia is growing and recent trends show that there has been a year on year increase in the number of superyachts either in the region or transiting through the region. Yacht Solutions at Ital Thai Marine is very keen to attract those yachts to this new facility in Thailand for planned or emergency refits, repairs or conversion work.

Wirat Chanasit, managing director of Ital Thai Marine said: “We are delighted to now offer a superyacht division at Ital Thai Marine shipyard. As Southeast Asia’s leading superyacht refit company, Yacht Solutions brings a highly skilled superyacht management team including exterior finishings and painting, interior fit-out and engineering. Yacht Solutions at Ital Thai Marine has full access to our facilities and our 300 strong workforce”.

Mr Twist adds that “We have a tremendous pool of talented craftsmen here in Thailand and this facility combines European management, standards and quality with the renowned finishing skills of Thai craftsmen. Our unique combination ensures international standards are maintained while owners receive exceptional value for money and service due to the efficiencies of operating out of Thailand. With this facility we are able to compete with the European yards but with the distinct advantage of a lower labour cost base”.

This has been the busiest season yet for Yacht Solutions and if the future bookings are a good indicator – then this yard is likely to be full for refits by the end of the year. Yacht Solutions in Bangkok has successfully completed extensive refit projects on the 43-metre charter yacht Douce France and 30-metre sailing yacht Merrymaid in the last 5 months.

Pangkor Marina Sendirian Berhad (PMSB) is the new Gulf Craft representative in Malaysia for Gulf Craft’s Silvercraft, Oryx and Majesty Yachts brands, and has been appointed as a sub-dealer to Go Boating Thailand, the yacht builder’s dealer in Phuket, Thailand. Our presence in Asia has transformed into recognition throughout the continent as a preeminent builder of superyachts, which is evident in the recent accolade that we won at the Asia Boating Awards.”

The recently concluded Asia Boating Awards held on March 29th in Sanya on Hainan Island, China, honoured Gulf Craft with the “Best Asia Built Yacht” for its new Majesty 135 superyacht, already amongst the most sought after within its portfolio.

“We are totally committed to the Asian market and are participating in the China (Shanghai) International Boat Show from April 11 and the subsequent Singapore Yacht Show from April 18, which will bolster our pan-Asian presence,” Bamps added. “Both shows serve as a continuation of our focus on the Asian market and will be meeting points for our clients from the surrounding areas.”

The Top of the Gulf Regatta has, over the years, proved to be a valuable training ground for sailing stars around the world, regularly attracting national, regional and world championships to compete in what has become a world-class sailing event.

Attracting top sailing talent and participants of over 30 nationalities, the Regatta also provides an international-standard competition format for Thai sailors, which has proved invaluable and has helped develop Thai stars such as Kerati Bualong (2012 Olympics competitor), Noppakao Poonpat (2010 World Optimist Champion, fourth place in 2012 29er Worlds) and Damrongsak Vongtim (2006-2008 Asian Games, Hobie Class gold medal), to name just a few.

Over 250 sailing vessels will compete in 13 Classes, ranging from Optimists to dinghies, beach catamarans, windsurfs, one-design Platus, keelboats and multihulls, making the TOG Regatta one of the most diverse regattas in the region. Attracting sailors from around the world, the TOG Regatta also attracts a large contingent of Thai sailors across all the classes, who compete side-by-side with top international sailors and hold their own, often securing class honours.

“2013 is the ninth sailing of the Top of the Gulf Regatta – one of the Asia’s most popular regattas – and like other regattas around the world such as Antigua Sailing Week in the Caribbean or Cowes Week in the UK, the Regatta is an important driver for tourism attracting repeat tourists and bringing new tourists to the area, and increasing the popularity and awareness of the destination. The sport of sailing has seen considerable growth in Thailand in recent years, and the TOG Regatta provides a international platform for Thai sailors and our commitment to supporting that growth and the Pattaya area remains strong,” said Mr. William Gasson, Chairman, Top of the Gulf Regatta.

At the youth level is the 2013 Thailand Optimist National Championships, which is supported by Sansiri PLC. Now in their 38th year, the Thailand Optimist National Championships presented by Sansiri, is the second oldest annual sailing event in Thailand and continues to develop youth talent and introduce Thai youngsters to the sport.

“At Sansiri, we aim to construct a life, not just a building. In addition, our CSR campaigns focus on sustainably supporting children in three areas; sport, health, and education. Sansiri is proud to be the main sponsor for Thailand Optimist National Championships 2013; young Optimist sailors are the future of the sport. Over 100 young sailors from Thailand and overseas will take part in this international-standard event and we are happy to support sailing opportunities for Thai youngsters and their development in the sport,” said Khun Ob-oom Chutrakul, Social Director of Sansiri PLC, presenting sponsor of the Thailand Optimist National Championships 2013.

The 600+ sailors at the 2013 TOG Regatta will be competing for three prestigious trophies: The top racing yachts will be challenging for the Top of the Gulf Regatta Trophy; The one-design Platu Class will compete for the prestigious Coronation Cup, named after the first event in 1996 coincided with the coronation date of His Majesty the King of Thailand (5th May), and which this year celebrates a record fleet; and the third trophy is awarded the winner of Thailand Optimist National Championships – three iconic trophies in Thailand yachting.

The Top of the Gulf Regatta is hosted by Ocean Marina Yacht Club, the premier marina in the Gulf of Thailand and South East Asia‘s largest, and will take place 3rd to 7th May 2013.

A highlight of the show will be the regional debut of three Silvercraft yacht models including the Silvercraft  34, 36 HT and 38 CC.

According to Erwin Bamps, Chief Operating Officer Gulf Craft, interest in small pleasure cruisers and family fishing boats in the South East Asian market continues to swell.

“PIMEX is a very important platform for the showcase of new models for the South East Asian region as the show brings together serious clients from across Thailand as well as Malaysia, China, Vietnam and Indonesia. The South East Asian boating market continues to be driven by demand for smaller pleasure cruisers and family fishing boats and our new Silvercraft models answer a desire for both form and function – with spacious yet stylish layouts,” said Bamps.

Tony Nixey, owner and managing director of Go Boating Thailand Co Ltd – distributor of Gulf Craft’s range of boats and yachts in Thailand, added, “We have been exhibiting Gulf Craft products at PIMEX every year and although competition is huge, we are one of the six main players in Thailand, where the PIMEX event helps us to maintain our strong presence in the market.”

He added that the market is starting to mature as seasoned seafarers begin to upgrade their vessels in terms of size and comfort. “In addition to being home to some of the best cruising grounds in the world, Phuket has now firmly established itself on the superyacht cruising map and this has helped attract more and larger vessels to the region. With PIMEX taking place this month and two shows in Singapore next month, the boat show season has definitely arrived in South East Asia and it’s buzzing with boating activity,” Nixey added.

Gulf Craft has had a long and strong presence in South East Asian waters extending back to 1992. Since 2005, the company has seen healthy sales across its range of Oryx sport cruisers, Silvercraft fishing and family boats and Majesty Yachts. Gulf Craft has in recent years also witnessed growing interest in its premium yacht brand Majesty Yachts with superyacht Majesty 88 and Majesty 56 yacht particularly being in the spotlight.
