There is an increasing request among Super Yacht owners for chase boats. Chase boats represent larger yacht tenders that do not fit on board but can be towed. They permit owners to anchor up and then use the chase boat to travel around the destination, without having to move the mother-ship. A luxury RIB developed by the UK builder Scorpion is ideal for this.

Scorpion is a world leader for sea keeping; it is great fun to drive and one of the most comfortable and dry boats in its class. Its unique hull design is extremely suited for towing, especially when fitted with the Scorpion designed towing brace.

Its looks are simple and elegant and with a high quality of build, it has a real ability to perform and always attracts admiring looks. One owner touring Greece this summer reported that almost every restaurant he visited wanted to park the Scorpion in pride of place.

A recent project was the Scorpion Serket 88 yacht tender for the 120ft Benetti charter yacht Giorgia. The boat was built to be towed long distances, yet act as a tender, a sports boat and support craft. Specific colours were chosen to compliment the aesthetics of the mother-ship and stainless steel removable steps and grab rails were purposely designed, for comfort when boarding.

With a range averaging over 200 miles, the Serket 88 superyacht tender gives the owner a chance to really explore and use the boat to its full potential. Powered by twin 225hp Yamaha engines the Serket 88 is a capable performer, even with a full complement of guests.

Having just had their first season, the captain has reported an impressive distance cruised and confirmed that their Scorpion towed fantastically, from the South of France to Croatia and back, covering over 1800nm in seas of up to 5-6’.

Scorpions are a real driver’s boat; they are dry and comfortable and lap up distance. It is the aim of Scorpion to build boats not for their ultimate top speed but for higher average speeds, even in rough weather.

The Scorpion Sting yacht tender is well proven in this, having a race record that others can only dream of and holds the most difficult world endurance records, including London to Monte Carlo and around the British Isles. About Scorpions range

Scorpions propriety designed hulls are ideal for Super Yacht chase boats. The deep V hull with high bow was originally designed to take on seas that batter the English Coast, but are also an excellent shape for towing. In recent years Scorpion has received a growing number of enquiries for chase boats for Super Yachts, especially among owners of 40 to 60m yachts who want a bigger tender at their disposal, than can fit on board.

Much of Scorpions range are suitable for chase boats but have to have a factory fitted strengthened towing brace installed during construction. Scorpion has a long history in custom built boats so are well used to building a boat to individual specification, for the discerning owner.

In addition to Sting yacht tender, other models in the Scorpion range are also available as chase boats and offer a range of choices from a water sports boat, to touring or just plain driving. The build quality is very high and their elegant lines draw admiring looks wherever they go.

Scorpion RIBs chooses Raymarine as its preferred supplier for marine electronics

December 05, 2012

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

Scorpion, one of the world’s leading builders of high quality and bespoke RIBs for leisure owners, commercial as well as superyacht users, has reported that it has chosen Raymarine as its preferred supplier for marine electronics.

Kevin Hunt, General Manager at Scorpion, says the company has chosen Raymarine’s most technically advanced e7D HybridTouch™ multifunction display as the product of choice for all its RIBs. He says, “Raymarine is the market leader in advanced marine electronics. This high level of technical innovation and superb quality reflects the characteristics found in Scorpion RIBs, which makes Raymarine the naturally preferred choice for us to offer to our customers.”

Scorpion RIBs are described as the ‘Ferraris’ of the RIB world, with Scorpion acknowledged as being at the forefront of technical innovation. Based in the UK, Scorpion combines innovative design with the highest quality materials to produce boats that are not only fast, but safe, long-lasting and able to withstand many years of demanding performance in all ranges of sea and weather conditions. Scorpion’s range of boats are from 6.5m to 12m and come as both outboard or inboard models.

Scorpion customers are usually experience and knowledgeable boat owners who understand the outstanding qualities of a Scorpion. Although mainly for the leisure market, they also supplied super yacht tenders and are especially known for chase boats. “This highly sophisticated user expects to have the very best, fastest and most powerful electronics and technology on board,” says Hunt, “and that is what we get from Raymarine’s product range.”

With a strong export market, and Scorpion RIBs located all over the world, another key advantage of working with Raymarine is the company’s worldwide service network and outstanding customer service. “We’ve always been very pleased with Raymarine’s global technical warranty and the provision of fast assistance and excellent service anywhere in the world,” Hunt says.

Raymarine’s recent technological innovations, which include exceptional ease of use thanks to the new Lighthouse operating system in the e Series, were also a key deciding factor in recommending this range to Scorpion users. Hunt described Raymarine’s technical advances, such as built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and the Raymarine apps which enable users to control and share data from their MFDs via smart phones and tablets, as a key advantage for Scorpion customers.

“This is a big safety feature for our customers in terms of ease of use when passage planning. The ability to plan routes from home, and easily share them with all your mobile devices and your on-board electronics makes route planning quicker, easier and above all safer.  It’s a key benefit for our users,” says Hunt.

Harry Heasman, UK Sales Manager for Raymarine, says the collaboration between Raymarine and Scorpion is a natural fit for both companies. The e Series larger screen size options of the e9, e12 and the new e165 enable Scorpion RIB owners to choose their preferred size of MFD. The ultra-bright, high visibility screens ensure easy viewing whether in bright sunlight or below deck. Users can also select additional networked facilities such as AIS, on board cameras, remote controllers, music and visual entertainment on board.  The ability to install the Raymarine products quickly and easily during the manufacturing process is also key and both companies cite the excellent collaboration between their technical teams as another key benefit of working together.

RIB manufacturer Scorpion Display STRIKE Tender at Southampton Boat Show 2010

July 19, 2010

Written by Mike Smith

The UK RIB manufacturer Scorpion will be showing three models at Southampton Boat Show to include the international launch of its very latest design, the Scorpion STRIKE yacht Tender.

The 9 metre Scorpion STRIKE redefines the RIB as we know it, blurring the edges between a practical rigid inflatable and a sports boat.  This is a well priced, high quality, stunning looking Sports RIB that takes the legendary ride and handling of a Scorpion to another level and will make the owner the envy of the pontoon.

Scorpion STRIKE RIB Tender

The hull modifications have been worked out between Scorpion’s Greek sister company, RIBCO and Scorpion RIBs UK and the superstructure of the boat has been designed under the guidance of Andy Griggs, Scorpion’s head of design.

The Scorpion STRIKE is based on a remodelled Scorpion stepped hull and fitted with a single outboard engine.  Scorpion’s objective was to manufacture a high quality RIB with superior ride quality, good performance, safe handling and good fuel economy. This model also sees the start of a collaboration between Ullman Dynamics of Sweden, the world leaders in shock mitigation seating, and Scorpion RIBs.  With Scorpion, safety is paramount and the design and handling capabilities give owners the confidence to know that they are always in control at the helm.

Twin-engine performance from a single outboard
Prototype STRIKE hulls have been on test in a secret location during the past year and, using a single engine 300hp four stroke outboard, have been reaching speeds comfortably above 55 knots with fuel consumption of about 1 litre a mile at 35 knots.  Both the ride and the handling have been above expectation.

Other models on display at the Show are the twin engine Scorpion Serket 8.5m and the beautiful single engine Scorpion Sport 6.5m.
