New Newport Shipyard 500 Metric Ton Marine Travelift to be delivered on May 29

May 10, 2013

To be the largest Travelift operating in New England, Newport Shipyard‘s new 500 Metric Ton Marine Travelift will arrive at Newport’s only and oldest working shipyard on May 29 and will be operational by June 21. This state-of-the-art lift will be added to the 100 MT lift presently working at Newport Shipyard and will replace the 300 MT lift, which has handled a majority of the large yachts since its purchase 12 years ago.

“We are looking forward to our new Travelift’s arrival at the end of this month and anticipate attracting new business to Newport by operating the largest Travelift in the northeast,” said Eli Dana, dockmaster of Newport Shipyard. “We hope by upgrading our haul-out capacity, super yachts will make Newport a destination for refit and repair work along with routine maintenance,” Dana said. “Until now, we were able to haul yachts up to 150 feet but as sailing and motor yachts continue to grow in size, the need for a larger hoist became necessary,” Dana said.

The new 500T lift will be able to handle yachts ranging from 50 foot catamarans to 200 foot superyachts. Additional features include night time work lights for emergency haul outs and a sound suppression package to reduce engine noise. “It is a big investment for us but we are confident it will attract larger yachts to New England and will be a win-win for everyone,” Dana said.

The organization was founded in 2006 and is a registered non-profit providing tax benefits to donors. YachtAid Global utilizes a network of volunteers who coordinate logistics with patrons who donate supplies and the yachts that can make deliveries to those in need.

YachtAid Global works with an impressive roster of yachts to provide the owners and crew an outlet to give back in a unique way that does not change the course of their cruise.

Since 2006, YachtAid Global has made over 50 deliveries of aid, totaling in excess of $300,000. Since last year’s show, YachtAid Global has made further deliveries to Fiji, Galapagos Islands, a second delivery to Robinson Crusoe Island, Jamaica, plus two deliveries to Isles Secas off the coast of Panama. YAG has discovered that many Charter guests are up for a unique adventure on their charter, and this is one way to experience just that!

Newport Charter Yacht Show 2013 Annual Culinary Competition: Charter Yacht Chefs to go Whisk-to-Whisk

April 15, 2013

Working as a prestigious chef at a 5-star restaurant is a cakewalk compared to chefs making their livings onboard yachts. That’s what the Newport Charter Yacht Show will aim to demonstrate when hosting its annual Culinary Competition this summer. The event will run on June 17 and 18 as part of the Newport Charter Yacht Show’s four-day assemblage, taking place from June 17 to 20, with Captain/Crew Reception on June 16. The Show will be playing a host to private luxury charter yachts as well as charter industry professionals, comprising agents, owners, brokers and captains, who consider the event a one-of-a-kind opportunity to “get a taste” of the latest and greatest of their industry’s trends and offerings.

“Working as a chef in a restaurant is routine, but working onboard a yacht, where you are constantly faced with obstacles and changes to the schedule, is much more spontaneous and challenging,” said Lady M yacht’s Chef Eddj Venzi (Forlì, Italy) who was the Grande Class Winner in 2012 and worked throughout Europe at resorts, restaurants and hotels before adapting his talents to the charter yacht world. Venzi added that as a charter chef you are on call 24 hours a day, working in spaces that are one-tenth the size of commercial kitchens without the luxury of line cooks and sous-chefs to assist in meal preparation. “In this industry, you need to be a perfectionist, but at the same time, when you are working on a yacht, you have to be ready for the unexpected, whether it’s extra guests, bad weather conditions or a last-minute change of events.”

The Culinary Competition’s main event, a battle of gastronomic proportions that takes place among chefs onboard the show’s registered yachts, features the Grande Class for chefs on yachts 100 feet and above, and the Premier Class for chefs on yachts 99 feet and under. For some extra flavor, and for the first time this year, an interior crew Tablescaping Challenge and a Freelance Chef Shucking Competition have also been added. Award presentations will take place in the main show tent at the Newport Yachting Center on Tuesday, June 18th at 5:00 p.m.

“Last year was the first year that this show was under the management of Newport Exhibition Group and they did a great job,” said Winnie DeCoster-Lynch (Newport, R.I.) from The Captain’s Concierge, which has run the Culinary Competition for the Newport Charter Yacht Show since 2008. “This year we’ve had a little more time to prepare and improve upon the competition and keep it relevant and a reason for industry professionals to attend. The more events within the show that are interactive and fun, the more it’s going to add to the experience of the show.”

Like last year, the Grande Class chefs will be provided with a “mystery basket” full of farm-to-table ingredients, all locally produced and grown, along with a short list of ingredients that can be used from their pantries. In their respective galleys they will prepare four servings of a meal of any cuisine, and invited guest chefs will determine a winner.

For the Premier Class, the chefs will prepare the quintessential dish of New England, seafood chowder, and have free reign over the ingredient choices. Once the dishes are complete, show attendees will be invited to visit every competing yacht’s galley to taste the creations. Ballots will be provided onboard each yacht, and the winner will be announced after ballots are tallied.

The Tablescaping Challenge is open to all interior crew onboard participating yachts and abides by the same criteria as the Culinary Competition, with a Grande and Premier Class. Crew members can enter the competition solo or as a team, and the challenge is to artistically decorate the dining table on their respective yachts, utilizing the yacht’s own linen, china, tableware and decorative items, including candles and flowers.

Each team may choose any theme and set-up on either an interior or exterior table. A panel of professionals will pick one winner from each class, and the show attendees will pick a fan favorite from each class. The criteria used for judging includes originality of theme, composition, use of materials and how well the tablescape fits with the style of the respective yacht.

The Shucking Competition is the only contest at the Newport Charter Yacht Show that is only open to freelance yacht chefs who are not on one of the show’s registered yachts but have worked onboard yachts for at least two seasons in the last three years. It will showcase their technique in a timed format for all of the show attendees to see.

“Shucking” or opening a shellfish is a frequently used skill when cooking onboard yachts that cruise New England. The amount of opened shellfish will be judged on appearance and presentation. Competitors will be supplied local shellfish, including oysters and clams, but will be responsible for supplying their own knives and opening tools, gloves and towels.

Newport Charter Yacht Show to host luxury yachts from around the globe this summer

March 01, 2013

This summer, the annual Newport Charter Yacht Show will once again host luxury yachts from around the world in fabulous Newport, Rhode Island. The event continues to gain popularity and traction as it prepares for its 31st edition and second year under the management of Newport Exhibition Group.

The event, scheduled for June 17 – 20 at the Newport Yachting Center, is the only one of its kind in the U.S. and caters exclusively to charter yacht professionals, including agents, owners, brokers and captains. Throughout the show’s four days, guests gain a feel for a variety of exquisite charter yachts ranging in size from 80 feet up to the super yacht size of 150 to 225+ feet. They also participate in lively seminars, vibrant “yacht hops” and a one-of-a-kind culinary competition.

“This show is the perfect setting for charter brokers and agents to come and learn the product; they can view the condition of the yachts, understand the layout and cruising schedule and meet the crew,” said Pila Pexton (Newport, R.I.), a charter yacht specialist for Merle Wood & Associates who has attended the show regularly and this year serves as its liaison for the American Yacht Charter Association. “Last year, Newport Exhibition Group organized a first-rate event, and I look forward to what this year will bring. The charter industry is always evolving and will continue to grow. We are already seeing more activity this year in comparison to last year, with more boats coming into the charter market.

“Chartering a yacht is a unique experience that we are constantly trying to project to the public. The services and amenities on a charter yacht exceed those you would find at a five-star hotel. What makes chartering so extraordinary is the interaction you have not only with your friends and family but also with the crew. I continually hear from my charter guests how the chance to spend quality time together on the boat as a family brought them closer, restored relationships, and tightened the bonds they have with each other. Surprisingly, guests also discover that the interaction they have with their captain and crew often leads to unexpected connections  and creates long-term friendships. Magic really happens when you charter a luxury crewed yacht.”

The Newport Charter Yacht Show will showcase charter vessels – both sailing and motor – dockside at the impressive four-acre Newport Yachting Center and adjacent locations on the historic Newport Harbor waterfront. An array of on-land exhibits will add to the ambience and offer added value for the charter yacht professionals attending the show. In addition, there are daily seminars that feature industry experts speaking on subjects important to the charter yacht industry.

The show will also host two nights of “yacht hops” where captains and crew dress in themed attire and showcase their signature cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres to guests, inspiring a festive mingling of professional insights.

Culinary Competition
During the show, on Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18, chefs aboard registered yachts will battle it out for the Newport Charter Yacht Show’s Culinary Competition, which is split into two classes: the Grande Class, for chefs on yachts 100 feet and above, and the Premier Class, for chefs on yachts 99 feet and under.

“Cooking onboard a yacht is vastly different than what a restaurant chef or even a private chef experiences,” said Winnie DeCoster-Lynch (Newport, R.I.) from The Captain’s Concierge, which has run the Culinary Competition for the Newport Charter Yacht Show since 2008.

“For these chefs, their galleys (kitchens) are much smaller and always moving on the water. Also, as a chef onboard you are pretty much a one-person brigade, and you are cooking every meal, from baking bread at 5:30 a.m. to satisfying ‘late-night munchie’ cravings. The culinary competition, as well as the yacht hops, allow chefs to show off their skills and gain recognition from others in their industry for how hard they work and how challenged they are.”

DeCoster-Lynch explained that for the Grande Class, chefs will be provided with a “mystery basket” full of ingredients, all locally produced and grown,  along with a short list of ingredients that can be used from their pantries.

New 500 Metric Ton Marine Travelift for Newport Shipyard

December 11, 2012

Newport Shipyard has reported that they have bought a new 500 Ton Marine Travelift. Expected to become the largest Travelift operating in New England, this state-of-the-art lift will complement the 100 MT lift presently being in use at the yard and will replace the 300 MT lift, which has worked on most of the large yachts since its purchase 12 years ago.

“This is a very exciting time not only for Newport Shipyard but also the Marine Industry in Rhode Island,” said Eli Dana, dockmaster of Newport Shipyard. “We see a growing demand by super yachts wanting to visit our area but without the capacity to be hauled for repair work they go elsewhere. Until now, we were able to haul yachts up to 150 feet but as sailing and motor yachts continue to grow in size, the need for a larger hoist became necessary,” Dana said.

The new 500T lift, which will be fully operational in June of 2013, will be able to handle yachts ranging from 50 foot catamarans to 200 foot superyachts. Additional features include night time work lights for emergency haul outs and a sound suppression package to reduce engine noise. “It is a big investment for us but we are confident it will attract larger yachts to New England and will be a win-win for everyone,” Dana said.

Sailors for the Sea as the Official Clean Regattas Partner of the 34th America’s Cup

October 02, 2012

Due to open today, the organizers of the second America’s Cup World Series San Francisco will continue their commitment to Clean Regattas certification.

The America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA) has partnered with Sailors for the Sea as the Official Clean Regattas Partner of the 34th America’s Cup. Clean Regattas certification provides independent, third-party verification that a yacht club, sailing program, or regatta is environmentally responsible, and is doing its utmost to protect the waters upon which people sail.

The six previous AC World Series regattas have been mostly graded Silver, with AC World Series Newport (June 27-July 1) topping the list with a Gold certification. At Newport, ACEA worked with Sailors for the Sea and the local organizing committee to find a composting solution. Nearly two tons of material was composted, while another 8.5 tons of material was prevented from entering local landfills.

Other highlights of Newport included free drinking water provided by ACEA in an effort to eliminate single-use plastic bottles, and an extensive plan was enacted to shuttle spectators to the venue from downtown Newport via water taxi and clearly marked bike lanes to help limit automobile exhaust emissions.

The building of a rain garden was another highlight of ACWS Newport. A garden of native Rhode Island plants and shrubs was designed to capture runoff from the parking lot at Fort Adams and treat the water through a filtering system. The project was a collaboration of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the event host committee, Sailors for the Sea and the America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project.

The high standards continued at the AC World Series San Francisco in August, where ACEA:
- provided 2,725 gallons of drinking water to all guests and spectators (preventing the use of at least 24,700 single-use plastic bottles);
- diverted 11.5 tons of material from the AC Village open public area away from the landfill (a 73 percent diversion rate);
-used B20 biodiesel to power the event generators;
- established a free bike valet station at the AC Village (managed by the SF Bike Coalition) that saw more than 750 bikes on Saturday, Aug. 25, alone; and,
- the America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project beach cleanup had 180 volunteers pick up more than 75 bags of trash and recyclable items at Fort Baker – participants includes team members, volunteers, America’s Cup staff and America’s Cup partners including Sailors for the Sea’s CEO Dan Pingaro.

“The efforts put forth by Jill Savery, the Head of Sustainability for the 34th America’s Cup, and her team and our partners show our dedication to making the 34th America’s Cup a sustainable event,” said Stephen Barclay, the CEO of the America’s Cup. “In collaboration with our partners like Sailors for the Sea, we are taking concrete, measurable actions to reduce our impact on the environment.”

“Our work with the America’s Cup Event Authority and efforts to support and certify each of the America’s Cup World Series events provided us the opportunity to evaluate our Best Practices checklist,” said Annie Brett, program lead, Sailors for the Sea. “We continue to collaborate with the ACEA on ways to extend knowledge through education, volunteer work, hands-on activities, and participation in coastal conservation efforts.”

With the next America’s Cup World Series San Francisco starting this week, ACEA invites its fans to support initiatives to deliver a Clean Regatta. ACEA will once again provide drinking water to all visitors, and also aims to divert materials away from landfill by reusing, composting and recycling. Around the venue there’ll be three different colored bins – green (for compost), blue (for recyclables) and black (for landfill).

Fans are also reminded to visit the website of 511 for journey planning. The website has information on public transit, walking and cycling options. The America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project and their partners welcome fans to participate in a conservation activity on Friday, Oct. 5, at Fort Mason, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Participants will work on a restoration and coastal cleanup to preserve the coastline near the event site. Information can be found on the America’s Cup website.
