46m Motor Yacht Gran Marlin 46 by KEYFRAMESTUDIO – the Winning Project of the 2012 Millennium Yacht Design Award

January 20, 2012

The 46m motor yacht Gran Marlin 46 is the latest project created by the Florence based design studio KEYFRAMESTUDIO. They have managed to bring the classic sport lines of Fisher-man boats to a large motor-yacht, obviously renovating the Gran Marlin 46 superyacht´s style, to understand better how this sensation translates into today’s modern yacht design language. Thanks to this intuition KEYFRAMESTUDIO won the most prominent international design competition, the 2012 Millennium Yacht Design Award (MYDA), in the most competitive category of the competition.

STYLE
Naturally the design operation that KEYFRAMESTUDIO undertook was principally based on on style and emotion. The base of the yacht is that of a typical 40-45 meter motor-yacht: a large free area on the bow, three bridges arraged to overlap eachother in the aft area, a large open living area aft and all the possible comforts a boat of this dimension can offer.

INNOVATION– DESIGN & LAYOUT
The innovations are many aboard the super yacht Gran Marlin 46. The lines are strongly very clean, futuristic and original as if it was a piece of contemporary architecture… all this while maintaining some of the most classic and beautiful traits of classic boats like the elongated pulpit. This strong mix between past and future gives the Gran Marlin 46 yacht a strong and new design expression.

Moving the volumes towards the stern area we have created a very spacious bow living area which is defined by a large “U” sofa and table. Doing this we have therefore moved into a more private area all the entertainment areas.

The interiors have a more typical layout so as to maintain Gran Marlin 46 with a solid more Spartan identity typical of Fisher-man boats but never sacrificing comfort on-board. The disposition of the spaces on Gran Marlin 46 are studied to maximise comfort and privacy. A very large space was created for the shipowners cabin, to which one gains access from a private studio next to the entrance foyer. The huge full-beam cabin is acoustically isolated from the rest of the yacht, thanks to the service areas that surround it.

TECHNOLOGY
The technical spaces in the lower deck have been engineers to maximise the liveability and comfort on-board: By moving the yacht tender garage in a more central area we have freed the stern area therefore creating a new liveable “room” with direct access to the sea platform, where we have allocated in the standard layout a fitness area. The tender garage acts as an acoustic isolator for interiors of the yacht.

With the luxury yacht Gran Marlin 46, KEYFRAMESTUDIO has yet again pushed the boundaries of yacht design with its designers passion and creativity. This year they are proud to present their new Future-Retro design language with this yacht and they are ready to push the boundaries of yacht design another time with their next project. Special thanks go to the MYDA jury for having prised their passion and art with the memorable prize MYDA 2012.

This year, differently from other years, the studio was prized with the most important award in the most prestigious category. The firm is usually involved in designed boats of all types and sizes, working on either one-off projects, mass-production vessels or re-styling/re-designing of entire lines of boats for certain shipyards.

The last projects the studio is working on is for Sicilian shipyard AQUAMAR for which KEYFRAMESTUDIO is re-designing their entire fleet creating a new futuristic family brand line called AQUA.

KEYFRAMESTUDIO is also famous for having designed the Mas Yacht 36 for Como based shipyard MAS. The studio won the design contest of the shipyard beating 3 of the most important design studios of Europe. The Mas Yacht 36 has had a great success and has become the stepping stone for KFS who are now designing the flagship: Mas Yacht 46.

KEYFRAMESTUDIO also designed luxury yachts of MEGA dimensions; for this they collaborate with their partner R.E.D.S. that is specialized in yacht architecture and engineering. All projects developed together are signed YTEAM: an innovative distribution of labor in yacht design that unites from the very first steps of the project all the creative and technical expertise. All members develop and follow the project in unison from the concept drawings to the construction supervision.
