KOKOMO Yacht’s Rig un-stepped by Marine Results as the tallest rig ever removed from a yacht in Mallorca

October 21, 2015

Written by zuzana

Last week in Mallorca saw the rigging and NDT (non-destructive testing) specialists Marine Results smash a record, when the company un-stepped the tallest rig ever to be removed from a yacht on the island. The work on the 75,9m rig of the 58,4m luxury sailing yacht KOKOMO (ex Kokomo III) is being performed at STP Boatyard in Palma, Mallorca.

Kokomo Yacht's rig pull

Jon Morris, who led the team, said: “This is a very tall mast and we believe that it is in fact the tallest ever to be un-stepped in Palma. We had to specify the crane size to STP, the shipyard where the work is being carried out, who had to bring in a special crane from mainland Spain. The same crane will have to return to re-step the rig as there is none suitable on the island of Mallorca.”

The impressive mast of superyacht KOKOMO was built by Southern Spars in carbon fibre, and is stayed with Nitronic 50 rod and ECSix carbon stays, with a lifting weight of 21 tons. Her rig is undergoing a complete inspection in accordance with a five year service plan.

Works on luxury yacht KOKOMO (ex Kokomo III) to be performed by Marine Results will include inspecting all components using advanced NDT techniques, as well as replacing any wearing or faulty components. The team is also removing all the fittings ready for the mast to be painted by Rolling Stock. The mast will be re-stepped in January 2016.

Dismasting for 82m mast of Sailing Superyacht KOKOMO at STP Shipyard Palma

October 15, 2015

Written by zuzana

The dismasting of the impressive 82m mast of sailing superyacht KOKOMO took place last week at STP Shipyard Palma, marking the dismasting of the highest mast ever dismantled in the Balearics. For this maneuver, it was necessary to hire a 500TN crane, especially brought over from the mainland.

Carried out with amazing precision, the maneuver was the perfect synchronization between the KOKOMO yacht’s crew, the rope and rigging men, as well as the crane masters. About 15 people worked throughout the morning to remove the entire mast, starting with the boom to the main mast. Captain Adam Painter commented: “Everything was very smooth and very efficient thanks to a very professional team.”

Captain Adam Painter added: “I find these facilities the best in the Mediterranean. It gives you the freedom to choose your own contractors, and we have a great network of contractors we have built up during the past 20 years. I’ve never had a negative experience in STP, I enjoy STP and I love the idea of how it has been created, to give captains and owners the freedom to choose the contractors and there’s no commission on top of everything, which is the reason why I generally shy away from other shipyards.”

For about 5 months, all kinds of work will be carried out in the outstanding sailing yacht KOKOMO. These will include the refitting and painting of the mast, which is done every 5 years, also painting of the superstructure, as well as various engineering works. As soon as all the maintenance works were completed, this extraordinary vessel will head to the Caribbean for the winter. While in the European summer, KOKOMO enjoys the eastern and western waters of the Mediterranean.

Measuring 58 meters in length over all, luxury yacht KOKOMO was built by Alloy Yachts in New Zealand to a design by Dubois Naval Architects in 2010. She represents the third superyacht named KOKOMO – originally was named KOKOMO III – built for the same owner. KOKOMO offers deluxe accommodation to up to 10 guests in 5 cabins, comprising a superb owner’s cabin, two double cabins and two individual cabins.

Alloy Yacht ENCORE featuring full inventory of Doyle sails

July 15, 2013

Written by zuzana

The end of April was marked by the launch of the 43,9m sloop Encore yacht, built by Alloy Yachts. Having installed a full Doyle inventory on their previous superyacht, sailing yacht Encore’s owners once again commissioned a full inventory of Doyle sails, comprising a Stratis main, genoa, blade, as well as staysail. After successful sea trials, Encore was handed over to her new owners in June.

The Encore yacht project saw another successful collaboration between Doyle and Southern Spars: the mainsail uses a new scaled down version of the Southern Spars car system that was installed on superyacht Kokomo. Richard Bouzaid, Head of Design at Doyle Sails NZ, worked closely with the Southern Spars design team on fine-tuning the set up procedures versus the flying sail design shapes.

Doyle’s investment in world-leading design programmes means that the company can replicate sails in a simulation situation at the design process stage which allows them to highly accurately predict what will happen in the real world on board the boat before commencing sail construction.

“Encore’s sails are fantastic,” said Chris McMaster, MD of Doyle Sails NZ. “The sails fitted the boat perfectly straight out of the bag, with no alterations needed. The yacht and sails performed above our high expectations and we are looking forward to seeing her in action.”

Dubois Designed superyachts excel at the 2012 Caribbean Regattas

Dubois designed superyachts dominated the numbers at both sailing yacht events with an impressive 10 yachts racing in St. Barths, from a total fleet of 46, and 5 of the 13 competing yachts at the Loro Piana regatta in Virgin Gorda.

The Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous in Virgin Gorda was in its second year and drew an exclusive fleet of both race-orientated yachts and performance cruisers, complemented 12 motor yachts spectating at the superyacht event.

“We were delighted to see Salperton, Bliss, Ganesha, Zefira and Lady B being sailed so well. This excellent event will no doubt attract more yachts in the future – and we expect more Dubois designs as well.” Comment Dubois yachts in a recent press release.

The St. Barths Bucket drew a broad field of sailing yacht types. The most recent Dubois designed sailing yacht Lady B, had great success, winning her class and placing second overall. First place was won by the separately handicapped classic sailing yacht This Is Us.

The 45m Lady B sailing yacht boasted an impressive sailing performance thanks to Dubois’ expertise in design and naval architecture. She sailed conservatively and in the knowledge that her pace would never force risky manoeuvres. She looked spectacular from every point of view.

Mike Golding, helmsman of the Lady B superyacht noted after the regatta “that boat’s got legs”

Congratulations must also go to the Dubois designed sailing yacht Ganesha and S/Y Twizzle, who placed second and third in the Mademoiselles Class. The yachts were sailed beautifully and the crews have taken big boat racing to new levels.

In the year 2000, Ed Dubois sailed his first Bucket Regatta with one Dubois designed sailing yacht, against a handful of other yachts competing. Fast forward 12 years and what an endorsement to the Dubois designed sailing yachts and a wonderful demonstration of the broad and lasting appeal of yachts designed by the British design firm.

Other yachts were also sailed very well – the newly owned KOO sailing yacht showed her paces together with S/Y Genevieve, charter yacht Bliss, charter yacht Moonbird, S/Y Desitnation, Salperton yacht and Zefira.

At anchor in the bay spectating were other elegant Dubois superyachts including S/Y Inmocean, sail yacht Artemis and the mighty superyacht Kokomo launched in 2010.

We wish the owners of the Dubois superyachts a wonderful season ahead, whether they are staying on the Caribbean, cruising to America, or heading to the Western Mediterranean for private use or for the upcoming charter season.
