Simone Madella and Lorenzo Berselli designed 32m motor yacht CRONOS concept

May 20, 2013

Designed by 23 years old Simone Madella and 21 years old Lorenzo Berselli, the Italian pair attending the BYT (bike, yacht and train) class at the European Institute of Design, the 32-metre motor yacht Cronos concept is a highly innovative project, which received a special mention in the “young professionals” category at the Millenium Yacht Design Awards (MYDA), presented at the SEATEC 2012.

Superyacht Cronos concept was described as follows: “interesting experimentation in espressive language applied to interior architecture, with particular to the value of wood and its use forms”.

32m Cronos Yacht Concept

The 32m luxury yacht Cronos project orinates from a reflection focused on a contemporary boating. Nowadays super-polluting and super-fast mega yachts are always more popular, witnessing the growing trend to excess (consumption, size, engine). Moreover today boats are just considered as vehicles to navigate or as ways to enjoy the pleasure of sea: they are becoming luxurious sea-view apartments (most boats remain moored in harbours all the time). All of these cause discontinuity and incoherence between interiors and exteriors.

Basing on these thoughts, Madella and Berselli tried to realize something different, beyond the concept of luxurious transport, with the goal to create something able to involve the owner in boat’s life and to create a connection.

Designers were sure that their boat’s essential feature would be slowness in order to improve the pleasure of navigation, the connection with the sea and the respect of nature, but looking at most of these motorboats on the market they noticed that there is no harmony between internal and external living spaces. The 32m Cronos yacht project is meant to reach that harmony, that connection, so as to create a unique and ventilated place.

Considering the modern slow boats Madella and Berselli think that it is possible to reduce the already low consumption of petrol, using the sailing boat’s hulls that partially reduce the internal livings (two engine with 250 hp each) but also guarantee a better aero-hydrodynamics and less imposing superstructure. In this way they can realize their idea of what a good performance is: optimize consumptions and emissions for the same power.

Cronos Yacht Concept - Interior

In Madella and Berselli’s opinion, modern inclination of sailing-engineering is not enough faithful to its tradition, so they decided to get inspiration from a noble boat of the past: the galleon. Their goal was to fuse together traditional and innovative concepts in building boats: volumes and architectures of the galleon (paying attention to the partition hull-deck, taking the ship owner’s cabin back to the stern, trying to adapt the role of the quarter to their needs, emphasizing the stern’s highness as a private balcony).

In order to reach their aim, Madella and Berselli never forget their mantra: the link between perfomance and slowness, supported by the new technologies, rarely installed in modern slow boats. The result of this temporal union is the 32m superyacht Cronos concept (from the ancient Greek “Chronos”).

Rolex Capri Sailing Week Volcano Race 2013 to kick off tomorrow

May 17, 2013

The last preparations are in full swing for tomorrow’s race start at this year’s Rolex Capri Sailing Week Volcano Race. To last until 24 May, the event will welcome an international fleet of Maxi yachts to the Tyrrhenian Sea for nine days of exciting competing, as well as an amazing social programme.

Composed of four segments, the Rolex Capri Sailing Week Volcano Race promises challenging conditions for the 14 participating Maxi yachts. Representing Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, the fleet eagerly awaits the alluring combination of inshore and offshore racing, set against some of Italy’s most iconic destinations.

“Capri is one of the most beautiful places in the world,” confirmed Sir Peter Ogden, owner of the Mini Maxi yacht Jethou, overall winner of the 2012 event and likely to be one of the frontrunners in 2013. “For sailors it combines onshore glamour and Rolex hospitality with challenging sailing conditions. In particular, the offshore Volcano Race presents a host of tactical issues, depending on wind speed and variability in direction.”

Thomas Jungblut, permanent tactician aboard superyacht Y3K, agreed with Ogden that capricious wind conditions in the area are known to upset the formbook. In 2012, Y3K was the second fastest boat on the water, a result the crew is aiming to better in 2013. “Due to varied winds and sailing conditions, sometimes the smaller or bigger yachts will have a big advantage or disadvantage,” said Jungblut. “Certainly there is no lack of tension among the fleet.”

In an effort to outperform this season’s competition, sailing yacht Y3K was optimised over the winter, configured with a more powerful mainsail, and, a deeper keel for increased stability and speed on the water. The crew has also undergone a four-day training session in La Ciotat, France to prepare for the challenges ahead. “The mix of races requires a variety of tasks, especially extremely good crew handling,” added Jungblut, emphasising the spirited contest expected within the fleet.

Ogden also confirmed the race’s reputation as being competitive and capable of surprises: “You can never prepare for everything and you have to adapt as the race develops.” He does offer some useful advice to newcomers; “The winning formula is easy: you just have to sail better than everybody else.”

Organised by the International Maxi Association, in collaboration with the Yacht Club Gaeta EVS and the Yacht Club Capri, racing officially begins tomorrow, Saturday 18 May, with a 100 nautical-mile offshore circuit that leads participants from Gaeta, past Ponza and Ventotene, to a finish on the iconic island of Capri. Two days of inshore racing will follow off Capri before the start of the fourth and final race, the Rolex Volcano Race, on 22 May. The Rolex Volcano Race is composed of a 300 nautical-mile journey around the UNESCO-protected Aeolian islands north of Sicily, with a start and finish in Capri.

Title Sponsor Rolex’s involvement in the Capri Sailing Week dates back almost a decade, while this is the third running of the Rolex Volcano Race.

Pershing launch 10th motor yacht Pershing 115

May 17, 2013

The brand-new 10th hull of motor yacht Pershing 115′ series has been recently launched at Marina dei Cesari, in Fano, Italy. The Pershing 115′#10 yacht represents the flagship of Pershing, a yard amongst the world’s top builders of high performance open motor yachts from 15 to 35 metres.

The new launch represents an important result for the historic seat of the brand, the Mondolfo shipyard: the maxi yacht of 35 metres, representing the brand at its best, is characterized by refinement and performance. As a mark of the tradition which has made Pershing 115′ yacht a timeless model, hull number 10 is characterized by sinuous, but decisive external lines with extraordinary performance, thanks to the collaboration between the architect Fulvio De Simoni, AYTD – Advanced Yacht Technology & Design – and the team of engineers and designers of the Ferretti Group.

Among the technological innovations it is worth mentioning in particular the highly innovative on board entertainment and domotics system, which can manage the audio, video and lighting systems directly from connected Apple devices – such as the iPad and the iPhone – and also makes it possible to monitor the utilities and the systems on board.

Luxury yacht Pershing 115′#10 is a unique yacht of her own kind and it is worth noting the innovative slide in the stern garage that facilitates launching manoeuvres and the storage of a tender and the new type of opening from the bow hangar, which is in line with the family feeling of the Pershing ships: characteristics that contribute to making this new 115′ a perfect balance between the traditional elements and some of the new innovations of the most recent models.

Pershing 115′#10 yacht has a layout with four cabins (an Owner’s suite and three guest cabins), which can host a total of ten people, and three crew cabins with five beds. A distinctive feature of every Pershing 115′ is the personalisation that contributes to making the flagship of the fleet a unique product, varying from one model to another and which can be customized according to the Owner’s needs.

The peculiarity of this model is the elegance that distinguishes its interior design, characterized by the essence of a texture with grey tones, which combines well with the classic metallic outdoor areas and the hull, creating continuity among the various areas of the yacht. Distinctive are also the numerous Alcantara™ fittings, with sandy and ecru tones, present in the roof, wall and door finishes, which make Pershing 115#10 yacht a vessel with an extremely contemporary style.

The boat is motorized by two MTU 3510 mhp engines combined with the applied thrust of two Kamewa hydro-jets.

Nada Serafini, Sales Manager EMEA of Pershing, expressed the enthusiasm of the brand and the Ferretti Group: “The launching of hull number 10 of the fleet flagship is for all of us a reason for great pride and it confirms the ability of the brand to make more and more unique and strongly avant-garde products. A boat that is tailor-made for the ship owner, the perfect expression of the values that distinguish the brand, namely, innovation, comfort, performance, design and class, with a spirit that is always oriented towards the future and the next challenge.”

Below is a selection of the superb charter yachts built by Pershing.

Giraglia Rolex Cup 2013, June 14 – 22

May 16, 2013

The Giraglia Rolex Cup, a race that has annually taken place since 1953, will return from June 14 to 22, 2013. Organized by the Yacht Club Italiano in partnership with the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, the weeklong event has long captured the imagination of the Mediterranean sailing community, and has experienced an important revival since Rolex’s emergence as title sponsor in 1998.

This year’s proceedings commence with a prologue race from Sanremo to Saint-Tropez on Friday 14 June. The three days of inshore racing in and around the Gulf of Saint-Tropez that follow are an opportunity for the fleet to sharpen teamwork and tactics – with the town’s famous and eye-catching Vieux Port as a backdrop – ahead of the offshore race beginning on Wednesday 19 June.

Although a distinctly Franco-Italian event – the 243-nautical mile distance race runs from Saint Tropez to Genoa, via the Giraglia rock off the northern tip of Corsica – the 200 plus fleet regularly features scores of international yachts and comprises both fully professional and Corinthian crews.

With race record holder superyacht Esimit Europa 2 not competing, an open field is expected for the battle to be first home in 2013. Among the likely pacesetters are three Mini Maxis who have shown impressive results recently: Sir Peter Ogden’s 62-ft sailing yacht Jethou (GBR), overall winner at the 2012 Rolex Volcano Race; Hap Fauth’s 72-ft yacht Bella Mente (USA), current Mini Maxi Rolex World Champion; and the 72-ft luxury yacht Shockwave (USA), owned by George Sakellaris, Giraglia Rolex Cup winner in 2010 under former owner Neville Crichton.

Last year’s overall race winner – determined by the rating system applied to the fleet – hailed from Switzerland, in the shape of Franck Noel’s TP52 Near Miss. In a democratic race with every yacht capable of victory, the crews’ ability to cope with the prevailing conditions during a contest that is often characterized by two distinct stages – the legs to and from the Giraglia rock – is decisive.

ISA announces new office in the USA

May 15, 2013

May 10, 2013, saw the prominent Italian luxury yacht builder, ISA (International Shipyards Ancona), announce the grand opening of its North American operations, with an office at the Portside Yachting Center at the 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale.

Edward Sacks ISA Yachts-North American Operations

Edward Sacks - President of ISA Yachts-North American Operations

It was auspicious timing for ISA as the day marked its 12th anniversary! ISA President of Sales and Marketing, Marcello Maggi, was on hand at a celebratory cocktail party at the Bimini Boatyard Restaurant with brokers, press, and members of South Florida’s marine industry to discuss on- going activity at the shipyard in Italy as well as new marketing initiatives.

Maggi commented to the Friday audience, “I have a strong personal connection to the US and have long been aware of the importance of the American market for our yachts.”

Ed Sacks, a well-known veteran of the luxury yachting industry, who has enjoyed a long-term friendship with Maggi, gave a colorful anecdotal speech to the crowd on his history in the industry and identified his primary mission. “While ISA already has a presence in North America, my task is to increase their visibility in the US marketplace by interfacing with the brokerage community and facilitating ease of communication with the shipyard. To be clear, I am not a broker. My objective is not to sell boats, but to assist established brokers with their efforts in selling ISA construction.”

In its relatively short 12-year history, ISA has delivered 27 yachts and currently has five under construction. They build yachts both in fiberglass and steel in the 30-70m range and are developing new lines with an eye toward expansion to eventually build yachts up to 100m.
