A very successful Palma International Boat Show 2013

May 07, 2013

Having closed its doors on Sunday, May 5, the 30th edition of the Palma International Boat Show hosted an impressive number of around 37,000 visitors. Amongst them was the King’s only son, Crown Prince Felipe, the first time in 30 years that a member of the Spanish royal family has attended.

Palma International Boat Show 2013

Palma International Boat Show 2013

A keen sailor, even competing in the 1992 Olympics as part of the Spanish sailing team, Crown Prince Felipe paid a surprise visit to the Show to present the Marcial Sanchez-Barcaiztegui Award, the first of its kind to recognise those who promote sailing. Sanchez-Barcaiztegui was one of the most respected and loved personalities in the sailing world and played a fundamental role in the promotion of the sport throughout Spain.  Having paid tribute, Prince Felipe spent more than an hour walking around the Boat Show, greeting both exhibitors and the public.

Director of the Palma International Boat Show, Chema Sans, was delighted at the event’s success, “This was a completely different Show from 2011. Most notably, it has grown a lot, the number of exhibitors was up 25% and the sea-based exhibition area up 76%, largely due to the crucial addition of a Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show – a venture that makes a good deal of sense for the Balearics.  Last year Monaco reported a record attendance of 33,000, we know for sure that we have beaten this figure and certainly had many more sailing superyachts on display. In total 47 superyachts over 24 metres lined the quayside of Moll Vell marina and, based on this year’s runaway success, I envisage this expanding to 65 or more for 2014.”

Chema continued, “All the exhibitors I have spoken with seemed to be happy having gathered quality contacts and conducted serious business. Those promoting smaller craft may not have sold ten boats at the Show, as could have been the case a decade ago, but have had their expectations exceeded considering the difficult economic environment. Many are already thinking about next year, discussing their stand and berthing requirements. And, with the all-new eight million euro Moll Vell due to be complete and open for business by spring 2014, the Show can only build in importance and quality.”

For the 30th edition, public and private sector worked together to remodel the Show into a nautical week with TapaMar gastronomy, the Gaastra PalmaVela regatta and Maremostra Ocean Film Festival running alongside the more traditional boats, accessories and services. The intention was to promote the Islands, in particular Palma, and confirm their strategic importance in tourism and yachting – giving impetus to the economy and job creation.

Speaking exclusively to nautical channel NTVE.TV, Jose Ramon Bauza, President of the Balearic Islands who declared the Show open on 1 May, said, “It is absolutely necessary for our economy, because now we want to improve our economy, we want to give opportunity for unemployed people and we want to be very proud of our industry in this nautical sector because they say we are the best all over the world.”

Quotes from exhibitors:

Paul Allan, Portbooker: “This is the Show that Palma has been missing.  The Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show in particular has given us a great platform to launch our brand new 40 metre plus website, and we’ve generated keen interest from marina partners and end-users over the past five days. We’re a global business but with strong local representation in the Balearics and we recognise these Islands as the leading nautical destination in the Med.”

Jimmy Blackburn, Fairline South Mallorca: “The weather has been fantastic and Mallorca is a great place for our customers to come and see us – a touch point to build relationships. We’ve gathered good leads, via previously known customers and new business, and it’s brilliant that we’ve been allowed to bring both new and used boats to the Show, priced between 200,000 and 1.4 million pounds.  We will return in 2014.”

Stuart Bray, Bray Marine International: “At long last they’ve got it right. We’ve had a very productive five days, busy with customers.  We will be back next year.”

Jamie Collins, Oyster Yachts: “Compared with 2011, the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show has brought a new dimension to the Palma International Boat Show. Inter-broker cooperation is key to business existence on the Island and it has worked well. Footfall has been impressive, aided I am sure by three non-working days, a bank holiday and the weekend. Our Oyster 100 superyacht Penelope has been received well on her debut and it has been nice to see yachts of a similar size and usability alongside her. A large mix of nationalities from Russian to British, German to Italian, have come on board for a viewing and all been impressed. We’re very pleased and keen to participate again next year.”

Peter Franklin, The Islander magazine and NTVE.TV: “We were thrilled to have been awarded a contract by Show organisers to handle international promotion of the event. To then see it become such a great success has delighted the whole team. Part of our contract was to provide internet-based and local terrestrial TV coverage of the whole Show. To focus our programming we awarded ten ‘Captains Lounge Best in Show’ prizes which included six yachts across the size range – motor and sail – now viewable on our website. We look forward to being involved in an even bigger Palma International Boat Show in 2014.”

Marc Kelly, Palma Refit: “The revamped Show has been well received and feedback positive. Without the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show we would not be here, as superyachts are our main target market, and in my opinion it’s been a long time coming. Not only have we been able to network and generate leads, but we’ve also been able to reinforce our image in the marketplace. We will be back next year.”

Salvador Sancho, Marina Estrella: “With last year’s Show postponed, it gave the event the opportunity to start again with a new format and of course the new agreement with the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show. Overall this has brought more international clients to the Show, many of them serious boat buyers. We have sold our motor yacht Azimut 88 to a Portuguese client who travelled from Vilamoura, our Minorchino 42 to a British client who will berth her in Torrevieja, a Hanse 415 to another British client, an Azimut 55S to its new owner in Cascais and finally a Cobalt 242. Many enquiries also came for the Hanse 630 and 575.  Not bad given we were expecting a quiet Show.  The emphasis was on quality rather than quantity which was a blessing as it allowed our sales team to invest time in their clients and conduct sea trials without being under pressure.  Next year we will certainly return, with at least ten boats, and feel positive that we are with the best yachts and businesses that Palma has to offer.”

Luxury Yacht Charter in Spain this Summer 2013

April 17, 2013

If you have decided that you should spend your summer holiday on a yacht charter in Spain than reading this article is just the right place to start. One of the most popular countries in the Mediterranean and amongst the most beautiful and diverse places to visit, Spain and its islands is a destination that tourists like to explore over and over again. Whether it’s the lovely warm climate, Spaniards’ passion for good life and food or the beautiful anchorages, this place will keep you entertained, amazed, relaxed and most of all, wanting for more. Balearic Islands, located in the western Mediterranean Sea, are  the most popular charter location in Spain with charter itineraries starting and ending in either Mallorca or Ibiza.

Mallorca

Mallorca

On a charter vacation in the Balearics you will encounter continuous sunshine, azure waters, beautiful beaches and rugged landscape with numerous historical sites to visit, including castles, museums and ancient cobbled streets in charming little towns.  The four largest islands to explore are Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

Mallorca

Majorca yacht charter offers world-renowned beaches and coves, and is an excellent destination to enjoy everything from countryside golf to historic culture or water sports and lively entertainment. The capital city Palma has plenty of outdoor cafés, pubs and large seafront discos hosting some of the best DJs on the music scene. In Palma de Mallorca you could also visit the elegant Cathedral of Palma (Sa Seu), commissioned by King Jaume I and built on the site of a preexisting Arab mosque.

Menorca

Menorca

Menorca

Menorca boasts more beaches than Ibiza, Mallorca and Formentera combined and there are numerous attractions, including fabulous archeological sites and cultural attractions throughout the island. For Menorca yacht charterers this is a perfect place to enjoy some diving, thanks to the crystal clear waters and fantastic diving sites. Minorca is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and features marked trails and routes in southern Europe‘s most important wetland areas. The S’Albufera d’Es Grau Nature Reserve is where many aquatic and migratory birds thrive, or visit one of the monumental sites such as the historic old town of Ciudadela.

Ibiza

Ibiza

Ibiza

Known as the ‘White Island’ thanks to its typical architecture, Ibiza is one of the best known islands in the world. If you are after lively nightlife and great entertainment on your luxury yacht charter, than Ibiza is the right destination. The entertainment isn’t just reserved to the night clubs. After the sunset Ibiza plays host to street markets, terrace bars, open-air cultural events and concerts.

However, there is much more to Ibiza than night-time entertainment. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage destination for its cultural wealth, boasting wonderful archaeological history and museums. By day you could choose to explore the ancient heritage of the island or simply relax and enjoy one of the many tiny coves, broad white sand beaches and water activities.  There are also two beautiful National Parks to visit in Ibiza: the Ses Salinas National Park and the Es Vedrà – an uninhabited nature reserve island.

Formentera

Formentera

Formentera

Your Spanish charter itinerary will not be complete without a visit to Fromentera; a mecca for nature lovers with rich vegetation of pines and palms. Formentera is a lovely little island situated 11 miles from the South Eastern coast of Ibiza and can only be reached by boat. Adding to the exclusive atmosphere, there are numerous great beaches and tranquil bays to relax and unwind.

Palma International Yachting Forum To Bring Extracurricular Fun

April 08, 2013

After three days of intellectual interaction at the Palma International Yachting Forum, organisers have planned a generous spread of extracurricular activities. From golf buggies to beach buggies, RIBs to rotor blades, the weekend of 4 and 5 May is expected to represent an extravaganza of air, land as well as sea – at incredibly affordable prices.

First up on Saturday 4 May is a friendly, yet competitive, one-day golf tournament at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Puntiro Golf Course organised by local PGA golf pro Peter Ledwidge. With late tee times to accommodate potentially weary heads, this links-likened course will play host to the Talk Yachts Palma Golf Challenge with first, second and third prizes available for best players alongside a raft of goodies donated by Mallorca’s nautical companies – all presented over an early evening cocktail on the Clubhouse terrace.

Sunday 5 May promises to be the crowning glory of an incredible week with a RIB Road ‘n’ Rotor Rally. Over the course of three hours, Forum delegates will be able to savour the special sights of this Balearic Island in three ways – sea, land and air.

High-speed RIB shuttles will whisk guests from harbourside Palma International Boat Show and rendezvous with a fleet of Karmann beach buggies stationed along the stunning Bay of Palma coastline. After showing off the off-road driving skills, a Sloane Helicopters’ chopper will scoop passengers up for a 15 minute sky tour over the Bay and rural hinterland to the east of Palma, before dropping them at the Sea Club at one-of-a-kind Cap Rocat, a former military fortress turned über luxury hotel, for chic canapés and something cold to wash them down.  The all-new 4.2l Jaguar Proteus C-Type will be on hand for chauffeured drives – the first in Spain and winner of two trophies in the recent Oris Rally Clasico Isla Mallorca. The RIB “taxi” will then return delegates to the Boat Show and back down to earth.

Forum organiser, Peter Franklin, says, “The ultimate aim was to give people an experience they would never forget at a price they could hardly believe. The golf day comes in at 150 euros per person to encompass green fees, prizes, drinks and snacks but, perhaps more interesting, is the value offered by the RIB Road ‘n’ Rotor Rally. In this case just 190 euros covers the entire three hour experience, food included. Sloane Helicopters lists a 15 minute sightseeing tour on their website for 299 euros alone, take more than 100 euros off and throw in a RIB, buggy and gourmet food and it’s easy to see why we think it’s an unmissable offer – a true chance of a lifetime.”

Places for both events are limited to 40 participants and will be open exclusively to Forum delegates booking up to and including Friday 12 April. After this preference will be given to other yacht crew and marine service personnel. Golfers must have their own set of clubs – maximum handicap 28 for men and 36 for women.

Running from the 1st to the 3rd of May 2013, concurrently with the Palma International Boat Show from the 1st to the 5th of May, the Palma International Yachting Forum promises an impressive attendance of specialist participants and leading authorities from the superyacht world – a nice welcome to the early season calendar of nautical events.

Guided visit to 50m Greenpeace expedition yacht ARCTIC SUNRISE for employees of Marina Palma Cuarentena

March 05, 2013

The impressive 50-metre expedition yacht Arctic Sunrise from Greenpeace is currently being hosted by Marina Palma Cuarentena at its stopover in Mallorca to raise the awareness about sustainable fishing as well as the dangers and threats suffered by the seas and oceans due to overfishing.

Greenpeace's 50m expedition yacht Arctic Sunrise at Marina Palma Cuarentena

Greenpeace held a guided visit to the flagship Arctic Sunrise yacht for the employees of Marina Palma Cuarentena and Marina Port de Mallorca yesterday, from 10:30 to 11:00 h.

Greenpeace campaign in Mallorca to prevent the overfishing
Greenpeace is making a stopover in Mallorca to divulge their awareness campaign for the dangers and threats suffered by the seas and oceans in relation to overfishing, fish consumption and other environmental issues that affect the Balearic Islands.

The nongovernmental organization denounces the problems of overfishing and advocates for sustainable fishing. The tasks of awareness for this campaign are aimed at those responsible in the Greenpeace offices in Mallorca.

The main action of Greenpeace in the Balearic Islands dates back to 1996, when they carried out a campaign against the illegal drift fishing in the south of the archipelago of Cabrera by five large Italian fishing vessels.

According to the crew, the NGO has chosen to moor their ship in Marina Palma Cuarentena for its convenience, its affordable prices and the empathy with the team of sailors from the port, in addition to having taken into account its commitment to the environment, its proper waste management, pollution prevention and the rational use of resources, as part of its environmental and ecological policy.

An ice-breaker of 50 metres in length
The Arctic Sunrise yacht, which will remain moored in Marina Palma Cuarentena until March 9th, is one of the three boats of the organization that roam the seas in defense of the environment. This icebreaker´s rounded keel allows navigating through icy areas without being stranded, which has facilitated Greenpeace protest actions in defense of the flora and fauna in Antarctica. This vessel, of 949 tons and 49,62 meters in length, is equipped with 15 crew members, as well as Greenpeace activists.

Built in 1975 in the Netherlands, the expedition yacht Arctic Sunrise has visited Spain to support actions in Huelva, Cadiz, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands. Before being acquired by Greenpeace in 1996, the Arctic Sunrise was a ship dedicated to seal hunting.

Palma de Mallorca to host the 30th Palma International Boat Show in May

January 16, 2013

To be held from May 1 to 5, the 30th edition of Palma International Boat Show is expected to bring a completely new approach by the organisers, promising to provide a variety as well as vibrancy that its host city, a popular Spanish yacht charter destination – Palma de Mallorca, is justly renowned for.

Palma International Boat Show

Palma International Boat Show

The new government in The Balearics has harnessed the joint resources of the Palma City Council and a number of key players from the significant private yachting sector in Mallorca, in order to totally revamp the format of the show which started back in 1983, on the north side of the Island in Port Alcudia.

Since then Alcudia itself has spawned the well known Alcudiamar luxury marina complex, and other ports around the islands have seen the development of popular sailing clubs and internationally renowned marinas such as: Club de Mar, Real Club Nautico, Marina Port and Moll Vell in Palma, Port Adriano in El Toro, Club de Vela in Andratx, Cala d’Or Yacht Club and Marina Ibiza to name but a few!

The Bay of Palma now sees some of the most high profile and exciting regattas staged every year, due to its perfect sailing conditions, wide open seascape and highly competent local regatta organizing teams. These include the Copa del Rey, Princess Sofia, Palma Superyacht Cup,  the Classic Trofeo Almirante Conde de Barcelona, plus dozens of others across all the seasons featuring amongst them, Lasers, Flying 15s, Dragons, J80’s and Optimists for young sailors.

During the same period the marine services infrastructure in The Balearics has grown exponentially, offering absolutely everything a yacht owner, captain or crew could possibly need. This includes the yachting industry’s best known brokers, charterers and managers, the largest repair and refit facilities in the Mediterranean, and a multitude of dealers, chandlers, sailmakers, marine engineers, surveyors etc.

Not surprisingly the ownership and management of these companies is truly international in nature. Nautical entrepreneurs have come to The Balearics from just about every corner of the globe, many of them arriving by sea on sabbatical sailing trips and deciding to stay permanently, using their experience and practical skills to build specialist marine businesses.

It goes without saying that the entertainment, catering, food and drinks selection is equally international and varied, with just as many foreign nationalities offering something for every taste and language, both in Palma, and in all of the island’s ports. Then there is the rich cultural history of an ancient trading and fishing port, the trendy tapas bars, the imposing and pristine Palma Cathedral, the Palma Aquarium with Europe’s deepest shark tank…the beaches, the excellent wines, and of course the glorious early summer Mediterranean sunshine!

There has never been a better opportunity to see all of this showcased, and to experience all of its facets and variety, than to visit or exhibit at the 30th Palma International Boat Show, or put more accurately; Immerse yourself in the Palma de Mallorca Nautical Week…

Most importantly, the Palma Boat Show is still a truly outdoor event, no stuffy halls or chilly air conditioned tents, just a pleasant walk around in temperate ambient conditions, with enough shade and plenty of places to sit and relax with a cool drink whenever you want to. No ‘boat show fatigue or burn out’… guaranteed!

In summary here are the Palma Nautical Week activities and events that are designed to suit all international and local visitors, be they tourists, potential boat buyers, existing boat owners, yachting industry professionals, or yachting/ luxury lifestyle entrepreneurs and journalists.

The award recognizes STP‘s efforts to ensure safety at its extensive facilities, which over 1,000 yachts a year pass through to be repaired and refitted, and which include a total of 105,000 m² (70,000 m² on land and 35,000 m² on the water) for overhauling yachts of up to 60 m. LOA; 50 berths for up to 90 m. LOA; and 5 travelifts for hoisting yachts of up to 700 tonnes.

Presentation of the Award to STP Shipyard
Mr. Josep Oliver, President of CAEB; Mr. Pedro Montero, Manager of the Foundation for the Prevention of Risks at Work; and Ms. Lourdes Cardona, Secretary of Promotion and Employment at the Balearic Ministry of the Economy presented the award to STP’s representatives on 22 October at CAEB Palma. Professor Salvador del Rey, Fellow and President of the Cuatrecasas International Institute for Legal Strategy on Human Resources and Professor of Labour and Social Security Law at ESADE Law School, gave a talk on the system of corporate responsibilities for preventing risks at work.

Safety is a key factor in STP’s philosophy and that of all the companies in the IPM Group, which are committed to integrating the prevention of risks at work into their management systems by incorporating in their facilities the safety measures necessary to ensure safe conditions for their workers and clients. Indeed, STP is Lloyd’s-certified to ISO 9001:2008 Quality, ISO 14001:2004 Environment and OHSAS 18001:2007 Health and Safety at Work, and is an EFQM Excellence Award-winner.
