The two prestigious facilities celebrated their newly awarded International Clean Marina accreditation with a flag handover ceremony on 3rd of March 2014 at Almouj Marina, Muscat, Oman.

Lusail Marina and Almouj Marina were both visited by a representative from the Marina Industries Association, owners and managers of the Clean Marina program, to carry out the flag handover ceremony in recognition of their achievements.

The two boating destinations sailed through the audit stage of the accreditation process, each scoring in the mid-90s.

The International Clean Marina program is a voluntary accreditation system for various marine industry operators including marinas, yacht clubs and shipyards.

The initiative aims to reduce non-point source pollution – the result of running water picking up contaminants from land, via everyday marina activities, and depositing them into seas and waterways. The program seeks to promote clean water and clean air across all marina industry businesses.

Lusail Marina and Almouj Marina were judged on their commitment to environmental management systems in an extensive list of areas including: storage of boats, fuelling, facility management, emergency planning, signage and information.

Wayne Shepherd, General Manager at Mourjan Marinas said:
“We are delighted that two of our marinas are now Clean Marina accredited and pleased to be involved in such a program. “We are fully committed to reducing pollution in both the local community, and boating industry as a whole.

“The benefits of managing clean marinas are endless, whilst the consequences of neglecting our environmental responsibilities are not even worth considering.”

MIA President, Andrew Chapman, said,
“the MIA congratulates both Lusail Marina and Almouj Marina on achieving this global marina industry accreditation which is endorsed by the International Council of  Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA).

The inclusion of Mourjan Marinas’ prestigious facilities reflects the significant expansion of the program internationally with accredited Clean Marinas now increasing not only in the GCC but also throughout China, Korea and Singapore.
