Guido de Groot Design and Intec Marine have unveiled two new revolutionary 27 metre and 34 metre motoryacht concepts that will use the next generation of hybrid propulsion ensuring higher energy efficiency. The new motor yacht designs will also offer lower noise levels and lower carbon and nitrogen oxide emissions. These 27m and 34m motor yacht concepts will feature the Intec Marine hybrid propulsion concept, which utilises the innovative electric propulsion setup by Voith (ILJ850), a system powered by two generators.

The new hybrid propulsion system will employ one generator to generate enough power for the two propulsion pods and the hotel load when the yachts are at cruising speed. This will create very low noise levels and lower emissions. The second generator is required for either yacht to reach maximum speed. The third smaller generator is for use when in the harbour.

Compared to a conventional setup where three diesel engines (two for propulsion and one for hotel load) are running continuously, this new system will aim for a 30% reduction of energy usage. The design, construction and operation of the two Next Generation Hybrid motor yacht concepts will all take environmental concerns into account. Both concepts should to be built to RINA marine green star design certification, a notation that has become a watchword for environmental excellence in shipping.

Guido de Groot commented “We noticed that there is a group of superyacht owners who are very interested in ‘green technology’ because of their background as entrepreneurs in modern technology in general, You could say that green design for superyachts is not necessarily important because of the small numbers of superyachts worldwide, but green design has to be seen as a global issue. A lot of ideas that come out of the solutions developed for the superyachts can find their way into other green solutions for ships in general as well. Transport over sea is still a very polluting business.”
