Yacht BIG FISH

Auckland, New Zealand. In the pre-dawn hours of May 3, the 45M Aquos Yacht Big Fish slipped her lines for the first time at McMullen & Wing shipyard and headed toward the Viaduct Basin for her final, pre-delivery fitout.

For the first part of her voyage Big Fish was assisted by two harbor tugs, who helped circumvent sandbars on the Tamaki River and negotiate a low bridge clearance. Once clear of Achilles Point Big Fish dropped her tow and headed down the Motukorea Channel under her own power for the first time. Full throttle was achieved at 1625 RPM, with a boat speed over the ground of 14knots. Extensive maneuvering trials were also conducted before an anchor drop test was made. Wing stations as well as bridge helm propulsion controls all operated flawlessly and at a few minutes after Noon, Big Fish was secured port-side-to at the Viaduct with captain, crew, project manager and team of shipyard workers and suppliers highly elated after successfully completing the yacht’s first crucial sea-trial.

BIG FISH - Crane Installs Mast & Observation Pod

A day later, the finished mast and observation pod assembly, transported to the Viaduct by truck, was installed via a large crane atop the moored yacht. Big Fish will continue sea trials and is expected to be finished and delivered at the end of May.

After delivery, Big Fish will embark on the first leg of her historic round-the-world Polar Circumnavigation voyage. Her first stop will be the enchanting islands of French Polynesia, where she will be photographed prior to starting her charter career. From Tahiti she will cruise to Fort Lauderdale for the international boat show, then head directly to Antarctica, where she will resume chartering, offering the world’s first luxury fly-in, fly-out charters of the frozen continent starting in late December.
