MTN Satellite Communications (MTN), the global provider of communications, connectivity and content services to remote locations around the world, has equipped luxury yacht Sea Owl, the newest luxury yacht from the renowned Burger Boat Company shipyards with an impressive communication suite that includes a first-ever onboard medical treatment facility with 24/7 video conferencing capability.

Burger Boat’s new 142-foot (43-meter) tri-deck superyacht Sea Owl, is the first private yacht to be fitted with a high-tech medical facility supplied by Guardian 24/7, a company that has provided medical services for three previous presidents of the United States. Guardian’s unique Ready Room™ provides the capability to convert a standard passenger stateroom into a fully equipped and operational emergency medical center, including oxygen, defibrillator, trauma kits and a teleconferencing connection to reach qualified physicians ashore.

MTN’s DirectNet managed satellite communication service on motor yacht Sea Owl provides a guaranteed committed information rate (CIR) of 512 Kbps synchronously, which means 1 megabyte of guaranteed bandwidth with the ability to burst up to 2 Mbps to support the Guardian video conferencing and other voice and data traffic to and from the vessel at sea.

IMA Yachts designed the integration of the Guardian equipment and protocols to fit within M/Y Sea Owl’s physical parameters and owner’s operational requirements. “MTN was the obvious choice to pair with Guardian because of their experience retrofitting the system on the owner’s previous yacht,” said Adrian Farmer, IMA Yachts co-founder and CEO. “This previous experience proved invaluable to all parties when integrating and installing this system.”

“We have the power to save lives with this breakthrough technology,” said Brian O’Mara, vice president of client development, Guardian 24/7. “With MTN’s reliable broadband, global satellite service and our advanced medical equipment and services, we can remotely allow a team of world-class physicians, including specialists, to manage life-threatening conditions, such as strokes, long before a medical response team could reach the patient, especially when the yacht is cruising in remote locations.”

“Sea Owl, with its first-ever Guardian medical facility, presented unprecedented challenges for ship-to-shore connectivity,” said Ron Cleveringa, vice president of sales and marketing, Burger Boat Company. “MTN has an unmatched proven record when it comes to supplying satellite communications systems and services for large pleasure yachts, and the company’s engineers worked closely with our team and Guardian’s medical experts to provide a managed satellite solution that meets the owner’s unique requirements.”

In addition to the Guardian videoconferencing, MTN’s satellite communications system supports ship-to-shore telephone and Wi-Fi Internet access for the yacht’s owner and guests.

“MTN is the leading supplier of broadband satellite communications products and services to the world’s megayacht market,” said Derik Wagner, managing director, MTN yacht services. “We can provide state-of-the-art managed satellite services for vessels ranging from private yachts up to the world’s largest cruise ships carrying thousands of passengers and crew.”
