One of the world’s most prestigious superyacht marinas, Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, is expected to install five bespoke designed 1,000 Amp (per phase) supply pedestals, the largest ever produced, to meet the increasing power request of the biggest vessels in the superyacht fleet.

Camper & Nicholsons Marinas has worked with Rolec Services Ltd, to develop this ultra-high capacity facility, which dramatically exceeds the already high offering of 600 Amp supplies that previously represented the upper limit for yacht shore power. These new pedestals will enable vessels to draw up to 3,000 Amps from each of the five units.

Cedric Le Rest, Yas Marina’s General Manager, explains: “as the new generation of superyachts grows ever larger, their power requirements are starting to stretch even the highest capacity electricity supplies that marinas can provide. So we’ve taken a big step to ensure we can cater for current and future yachts, right up to the top of the size range.”

Commenting on the design and manufacture of the pedestals, Kieron Alsop, Managing Director of Rolec Services said, “having already manufactured and supplied the 600 Amp shore power units currently on site at Yas Marina, we are now delighted to have been commissioned by Camper & Nicholsons to design, develop and manufacture these bespoke, 1,000 Amp per phase Megamaster units. These unique 1,000 Amp units posed a number of new challenges including how to accommodate the huge switchgear and electricity management systems in a non-industrial looking format suited to a marina environment. Further challenges were to manage the safe 1,000 Amp connection between the superyacht and supply point on the Megamaster, as well as evenly distributing the physical weight of the unit, in order to maintain the stability and buoyancy of the pontoon on which they will be mounted.”

Yas Marina is no stranger to dealing with the world’s biggest yachts, with berthing available up to 150m LOA. And the marina’s provision of electricity, fuel and water comes at prices that Mediterranean or Caribbean operators can only dream of. Electricity is just 4 US cents per kilowatt and water only 3.6 US cents per imp gallon!

The scale and quality of the services, combined with these utility prices, make Yas Marina an attractive location for superyachts of all sizes. The marina is also currently undergoing an expansion and refurbishment project, which will provide shore-side facilities with even greater appeal for owners, guests, captains and crew.
