The Town of Montague and surrounding areas will benefit from a combined federal and provincial investment of more than $156,400 to restore and expand the Montague Waterfront Marina.

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, and the Honourable Allan Campbell, PEI Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning participated in the announcement today.

“Our government is proud to work hand-in-hand with the province of Prince Edward Island to revitalize rural community infrastructure across the Island,” said Minister Shea. “The refurbishment and expansion of the Montague Waterfront will not only benefit area residents, but it will also enhance the community’s seaside tourism capacity and create jobs.”

This project will restore 20 existing docks and install 20 additional docks at the Montague Waterfront Marina. Both area residents and tourists will benefit from the completion of this project, which will allow the waitlist for dock space in the Montague Harbour to be shortened considerably.

“The waterfront of Montague is not just one of the town’s most beautiful spots, it is also an important hub of tourism and recreation,” said Minister Campbell. “By improving and expanding dock facilities, this project will help Montague grow as a boating destination for visitors and for area residents.”

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency will invest

$62,818 through the Innovative Communities Fund. The Province of PEI will contribute $63,679 from the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning’s Skills PEI program, and $44,103 from the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development’s Island Community Fund and Community Development Bureau.

“Everyone on the Montague Waterfront Development Corporation volunteer board is very appreciative of the opportunity to expand and improve the marina facilities, as it grows to become economically sustainable,” said Niall MacKay, Chair of the Montague Waterfront Development Corporation. “We will continue to serve the town and surrounding areas and expand our ability to promote tourism in south-eastern PEI.”

The federal and provincial commitment to improve infrastructure in rural communities across the Island ensures that the Montague Waterfront Marina will be enjoyed by area residents and tourists for years to come.
