Your gateway to the island’s charms

From the marina you can step ashore straight into the heart of the old town. A maze of little streets lined with old shuttered houses radiate out from the Byzantine castle where an array of stylish boutiques, elegant restaurants and buzzing bars are laid out before you.

Limassol Marina is perfectly located for exploring not just the town of Limassol but this entire historic island. The verdant mountains of the Troödos region are within easy reach. Hike or bike the countless nature trails weaving their way through lush pine forests, past crashing waterfalls and Byzantine churches.

  1. Bountiful beaches

There’s no shortage of gorgeous beaches either. Some 57 of them have been awarded blue-flag status of which Pissouri Beach is just one. Located between Paphos and Limassol and close to Cape Aspro and Aphrodite’s Rock, it’s a lovely stretch of sand lapped by clear, calm waters. You’ve plenty of tavernas close to the beach and at the nearby Pissouri Village, where you can sample traditional Cypriot food. There are various watersports on offer as well as a small dive school offering scuba diving lessons.

Some 2km west of Limmasol is Kourion Beach, backed by Kourion’s spectacular Greco-Roman Amphitheatre. It’s a great spot for windsurfing as it faces the open sea making for exhilarating conditions. Closer still, and just a 10-minute drive from Limassol, is Ladies Mile, a popular beach with families thanks to its shallow waters and four-mile stretch of sand and pebbles. And if you prefer your beaches somewhat quieter, Avdimou Beach is hard to beat. You need a car to get to it, but it’s worth the trip just for the sense of away-from-it-all tranquillity.

  1. Travel back in time

Cyprus has some of the finest archaeological sites one could ask for. To the east of Limassol lies the ancient kingdom of Amathus, while to the west lies Ancient Kourion with its breath-taking Greco-Roman amphitheatre perched on a cliff-top. Or for something more recent, explore Limassol’s medieval Byzantine castle where Richard the Lionheart is said to have got married.

  1. Sample the local flavours

Standing at the crossroads of three continents, Cyprus has a rich and diverse culinary heritage. In Limassol you’ll be spoilt for choice, with restaurants ranging from Italian, French and Spanish to Chinese and Japanese.

Some of the finest food you’ll eat here, however, is the traditional Cypriot cuisine. And there’s no better place to enjoy its fresh flavours than in the tavernas of Limassol.

Limassol is also the centre of the wine industry, and a tour of the local wineries surrounding the city is a must. One of the most famous is the Castle of Kolossi, birthplace of the sweet dessert wine ‘Commandaria’, the world’s oldest named wine still in production.

  1. Experience the nightlife

Known as ‘the town that never sleeps’ Limassol’s nightlife attracts visitors from around the world. From buzzing cafés and fashionable cocktail bars, to live music venues and hip beach bars plus clubs featuring world-renowned DJs. In Limassol, you’ll never be at a loss for things to do.

  1. Shopping therapy

Limassol Marina offers a superb range of high-end shops and designer boutiques featuring brands such as Ralph Lauren, Paul Smith, Nicole Farhi, Paul Shark and Diesel. Or, just a stone’s throw from the marina, in Limassol town, you’ll find yet more chic designer shops on Makarios Avenue. Anexartisias Street is the place to go for anything from clothes and jewellery to local souvenirs.

  1. Take to the waves

Located on the south coast of Cyprus, Limassol enjoys one of the mildest Mediterranean winters, making it the ideal year-round yachting destination. It’s also one of the finest cruising locations in the lovely Mediterranean yacht holiday destination.

There’s a beautiful local coastline on your doorstep, with a multitude of secluded bays. One of the most beautiful is Konnos Bay. Protected by a wide sweep of cliffs that shelter it from the prevailing winds, its clear turquoise waters lap the picturesque Blue Flag beach. Ashore you can follow the nature trails though Cavo Greco, a national forest park. Fontana Amoroza, part of the Akamas Peninsula, is another stunning bay where, according to legend, Goddess Aphrodite used to swim. Go swimming in the clear, blue waters or explore the amazing sea caves. There are numerous picturesque harbours such a Kyrenia, with its Byzantine castle and historic buildings as well as plenty of chic marinas.

Limassol is also the perfect jumping off point for the cruising destinations of Greece and the Greek Islands, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt and Turkey as well as the Suez Gateway to the Red Sea.

Whether you like to laze in the sun or get out on the water – water-skiing, paragliding or canoeing, there’s a beach that’s just perfect. The warm, clear waters and lack of strong tides and currents also make the island a diver’s paradise. Check out the Zenobia wreck off the coast of Larnaca, considered the finest dive site in the Mediterranean.

  1. Take to the fairways

You’ve a good choice of golf courses on the island, each with their own distinct style. The idyllically situated Elea, just 2km from Paphos, is part of a luxury development and was designed by Sir Nick Faldo. If you like plenty of bunkers then this is the course for you. Also close to Paphos is the 18-hole Aphrodite Hills course. Designed by American golf architect Cabell B. Robinson, it’s laid out over two plateaus, making it one of the best, most challenging courses in the Mediterranean. Secret Valley Golf Club is set in a spectacular valley where the dramatic rock formations change different colours in different lights, while Minthis Hill, set in the grounds of a 12th-century monastery offers incredible views and a superb clubhouse.

Dare to go beyond this summer…

…And experience everything that Limassol has to offer – from the traditional to the contemporary, and the ultra simple to the uber luxurious. As a place to live and a place to sail, Limassol will take some beating.
