HISTORY AND CULTURE

Baroque and Liberty for an open-air museum

The origins of this town on the southern coast of Sicily, dated back to prehistoric times, are evidenced by numerous finds of the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic eras, such as the Hypogeon Stagnone Pontillo, the necropolis of Monte Petrulla, the pre-hellenistic Grangela. Identified as the “Liberty City”,Licata offers to its visitors numerous monuments, sumptuous villas and precious decorations preserved on its territory: the Villas Liberty Park, the City Palace, the Verderame Palace and  the Re Grillo Theatre.

The Valley of the Temples

Founded in 581 B. C. by Greek colonists rhodium-Cretans, Akràgas became, in the following century, one of the largest and most prosperous cities in the Mediterranean: to testify this, the extraordinary archeological finds hedged in the   Regional Archaeological Museum of Agrigento and the majestic Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO heritage of humanity. Four kilometers from Agrigento, in Contrada Kaos, to visit the Regional Home  Museum Luigi Pirandello.

The Villa Romana del Casale

Rich in medieval monuments, baroque palaces, religious buildings and elegant gardens, Piazza Armerina is linked to the Villa Romana del Casale: protected by UNESCO since 1997, was built by an emperor or, perhaps, by a member of the senatorial aristocracy and it can be considered, for its beauty and complexity, one of the best examples of a representative dwelling compared to other contemporary of the Western Roman Empire.

The City of Ceramics

Known to the world as “The City of Ceramics”, it hosts the Regional Museum of Ceramics, that collects artefacts from all over Sicily, illustrating the history of ceramics production on the island. Worth a visit  the charming old town with its many baroque palaces and its spectacular staircase of Santa Maria del Monte.

The Venus of Morgantina

Given back from the Paul Ghetty Museum in Malibu, the Greek statue of the fifth century B.C., is now exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Aidone. The Venus finds its natural place in a tourist route that is not found anywhere else in the world: the streets of the ancient Morgantina with its undamaged Agora and its precious homes and the majesty of the Venus make that every visitor feels completely immersed in the enchanting Roman era.

FRAGRANCES AND FLAVOURS

Licata

La Madia – On the dinner table you will find the true taste of Sicily, reinterpreted through the important experiences of a chef who has been able to impose himself for his talent and culinary personality. La Madia Restaurant, located in the historic center of Licata, is a charming and welcoming location characterised by an elegant room with trompe-l’oeil walls.

“I use techniques that evoke childhood play, everyday life episodes of a Sicily now far away in time” Pino Cuttaia

L’Oste e il Sacrestano – A cooking style, that of the chef Peppe Bonsignore, certainly not showy and decorated with glitter and sequins, but a very territorial cuisine with the capital T, lightened by a gentle and calibrated hand.

La Taverna del Duca – Inspired by the belief of local folklore of the owners, the restaurant is located in the ”Marina Neighborhood”, heart of the historical center of Licata, inside the ancient palace of the Duke Palmerio Serrovira. The brothers Angelo and Daniele Burgio put into their work all the passion and love for their city, its history and its traditions

Agrigento

Il Re di Girgenti – The scenery is breathtaking… we have a scenic view of the magnificent Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. The owners manage the restaurant skillfully, welcoming customers like old friends. The menu is various and it changes week by week

Il Dehors – Immersed in a Mediterranean garden with a view over the Temples: all the layers of history of this impressive building, that opens around a courtyard, are offered to the guests. The cuisine is a tribute to the island, from the most popular dishes to those aristocrats of the monsù.

Caltagirone

Coria – Two young chefs who will amaze you with their reinterpretations of islander classics. In the heart of the centre, the choice of strong colours in the two beautiful rooms gives character to the restaurant that took inspiration from the name of the author of “Sicily’s fragrances”, G. Coria.

Piazza Armerina

Al Fogher – Nestled in a green valley, just a stone’s throw from Piazza Armerina, in a former railway gate house. An intriguing and flavoursome menu, fruit of the chef – owner Angelo’s experience.

Ragusa

Duomo – Ciccio Sultano captures the original tastes and fragrances of his homeland infusing them with international breath in meat and fish dishes of linear innovation.

THE WINE TRAILS

Aziende Agricole Quignones – In the gorgeous setting of sunny Licata, Quignones farms occupy about one hundred acres of land owned by the Quignones family for centuries. Almost thirty hectares of vineyard and fifteen of olive trees provide the whole production transformed by Aziende Agricole Quignones

Tenuta Barone La Lumia – The farm uses exclusively its own grapes which originate from native tendrils selected among the best of Sicily: Nero d’Avola, Inzolia, Nerello Mascalese and Frappato, from which exceptional wines, for intensity of aroma and taste, are obtained. The rural home, around which the farm is centered, was built, in arab style, around the end of the 18th century by the La Lumia family. It is, still today, one of the most fascinating wine-producing estates of Sicily

Cantine Milazzo – The farm, located in the hills north-east of Campobello di Licata (AG), extends over 30 hectares and is a small part of what was once the famous Barony of Ravanusa, where they grow the best native varieties and some varieties that, in various years of study and experience, were considered essential for obtaining high quality wines: “Federico II Rex Sicilie”

Planet – It’s a “Journey through Sicily”: a journey from west to east, that proceeds from Sambuca di Sicilia and Menfi as far as Vittoria, Noto and Etna. The stages of the journey are the five Planeta wineries: five boutiques, each designed to transmit, through the wine, the identity of the territories so different from each other.
