HyPS, the Dutch company specialising in the design, development, delivery and service of marine hybrid power and propulsion systems, is thrilled to announce that they have been commissioned to update the battery system on board the outstanding 40-metre J Class super yacht Rainbow, delivered by Holland Jachtbouw in 2012. Scheduled for completion in October 2015, the update will provide the iconic sailing yacht Rainbow with more power as well as capacity.

To be similar to that in the recently launched J8 sailing yacht Topaz, the new battery system for luxury yacht Rainbow will consist of two battery sets, each delivering 42 kWh. These will be water-cooled Li-NMC (Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) types, the latest generation of Li-Ion rechargeable batteries for high power and energy applications. They deliver a compromise between high current rate and high capacity rate and provide higher energy density with lower costs and a longer lifecycle compared to other Li-Ion alternatives. The system will be able to deliver 8 hours (80% depth of discharge) of silent, zero-emissions power at an average power of 8.4 kW.

As well as the storage and supply of electrical power, the complete HyPS battery system comprises a battery management system (BMS). This delivers battery monitoring, protection, control and management; overvoltage protection; as well as peak shaving of the auxiliary distribution system.
