Tall Ships Youth Trust

The Tall Ships Youth Trust, formerly The Sail Training Association, is a registered charity founded in 1956 that is dedicated to the personal development of young people through the crewing of ocean going sail training vessels. It is the UK’s oldest, largest sail training charity for young people aged 12-25. The Trust takes over 3,000 individuals to sea a year and 75% of young people are disadvantaged and disabled.

100,000 trainees have sailed 1.8M nautical miles on the Trust’s fleet – a 60m brig, Stavros S Niarchos, four 22m ocean-going Challenger Yachts, a 19m Catamaran and before them, a 60m brig Prince William and two 37m sailing yacht Helena C (ex Malcolm Miller) and Sir Winston Churchill superyacht.

New and unique youth initiatives are regularly introduced including:

Youth Mentor Scheme – professionally qualified teachers and youth workers sailing as volunteers to provide support and guidance for young people

Tall Ships Academy – training and development programme, endorsed by the RYA and MCA, offering young people a route from trainee to Trust volunteer and RYA Watch Leader, MCA Yacht Rating and a career at sea.

Special Needs Voyages – dedicated voyages for young people with physical and mental special needs to help prepare them for adult life and develop independent living skills

Voyages of Understanding – multi-national/cultural/faith, diversity voyages

Rehabilitation voyages for young offenders.

The Trust also runs a number of intergenerational day sails, taster weekends and longer voyages for those aged 18-80. No previous sailing experience is necessary for most voyages.
