8th K&M Yachtbuilders Open Day, April 21, 2012

March 22, 2012

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

On Saturday 21 April 2012, K&M Yachtbuilders, manufacturers of aluminium custom-built sailing yachts, opens its doors for the eighth time, exhibiting all of its lines, including Besteaver, Stadtship as well as Bestewind. From 10 am to 4 pm everyone will be welcome in Makkum to learn more about the shipyard and its work, according to the ‘tried and tested formula’: various sailing yachts under construction, several yachts outside on the water ready to sail, two talks at 12pm and 2pm and beautiful weather!

Eeuwe Kooi, Director and owner of K&M says “Why would our Open Day be of interest to you? If you plan to have a custom-built sailing yacht built for you. If you plan to build one. Or because you are “simply” a sailing enthusiast.”

“It goes without saying that you could visit us on any other day, but during the Open Day you will have the opportunity to see many yachts at the same time. Every year, owners of a K&M yacht moor in Makkum for the Open Day; these are yachts that are not normally in our yard. With so many ships alongside each other you can see clearly how each owner made his or her own choices. To get a complete picture of your ideal ship, it is good to view as many different ships as possible and to write down everything you definitely do and do not want”, explains Eeuwe.

“The ships that are there present a good picture of what we do as a yard. The aluminium Bestevaer ships, but also the Bestewind 50 – the polyester sister of the Bestevaer – are ships built by us. There will be four examples of the Bestewind 50.”

“We also have two complete custom-built yachts, the Icon 48 ‘Leeloo’ and the German Frers 88ft sailing yacht Tulip. The ‘Tulip’ will be the largest yacht on the day. The Bestevaer 45ST ‘Africa’ is the smallest, but no less interesting to take a look at!”

Talks
This year K&M has two very different but equally interesting talks.
12pm The famous and renowned designer Gerard Dijkstra will talk about the ‘MK II’ of the Bestevaer 53ST. This is a ship he designed; K&M built it for him and he mainly uses it to sail in cold regions.

14pm The family de Mol sailed around the world in the Bestewind 50 yacht Abel T,  together with their young children. Beautiful photographs and great stories are guaranteed!

Other activities
Besides the ships under construction and the ships outside, K&M has organised a number of other activities to ensure that visitors enjoy a great day out.

The well-known German (yacht) interior designer and builder Alv Kintscher will be there with a stand and will talk about his way of working and his choice for mainly natural materials.

The visitors will also find a number of suppliers, including Yanmar, Esthec, Cuno, RayMarine and KVF Stanfit who present their products.

If one is looking for a new outfit, the nautical lifestyle shop ‘Zilt, kleding van de Kust’ is just the ticket. If one is hungry or thirsty, he can buy some refreshments from Jurjen Catering. If visitors would like to have one final look, Makkum’s beach is nearby for the rest of the family.

There is no need to register for this Open Day, and children are most welcome!
