Feadship unveils new 2012 Future Concept ‘Relativity’

September 20, 2012

Feadship has unveiled its latest Future Concept ‘Relativity’ at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show.  Feadship’s Future Concepts are an annual exploration by the brand’s designers and naval architects into the requirements of the next generation of superyacht owners. The newest motor yacht concept Relativity was created by Feadship with a particular ‘client’ in mind as they speculated on how Albert Einstein might have used a Feadship superyacht to spread the message of knowledge and innovation around the globe.

By generating a design for a specific individual, Superyacht Relativity is a clear departure from previous successful Feadship Future Concepts such as X-Stream, F-Stream, Aeon, superyacht Breathe and motor yacht Qi. These were built with the generic requirements of a wide range of conceivable owners in the coming decades based on detailed market research. By taking the possible desires of a famous person from the past as the template, the  Relativity motor yacht project allowed the Feadship designers to hone in on specific areas in the same way that they do for individual owners in their everyday life.

“Client privacy is of paramount importance to us at Feadship and we can rarely if ever divulge the input that was given to us for any of our custom motoryachts,” says Francis Vermeer, head of marketing at Feadship. “Each and every Feadship is a reflection of the bespoke wishes of the people who commission her, and these briefings remain confidential. With the Relativity project we were able to share in a fun and informative way the processes involved in designing a Feadship before the contract is even signed.”

“By combining this with the Future Concept philosophy, which already gives our people a license to think way outside the box, we have created an ingenious proposal that will entice others to pick up some of the ideas and run with them. One of Einstein’s many famous quotes is that ‘imagination is more important than knowledge’. With the Relativity concept, Feadship offers a theoretical blend of innovation and know-how that could be transformed into reality with a client who shares our ambition to push the window of potential.”

While we all know that Albert Einstein was a brilliant scientist, fewer people are aware of his great passion for sailing and owned various yachts in his lifetime. “What this eminent man would have made of a 21st-century Feadship we cannot say,” adds Vermeer. “But as we worked on the Relativity project we’re pretty sure that he would have found it a great experience. Mr Einstein was famous for having a sense of humour and it was great fun to speculate how he might have criss-crossed the oceans with his fellow scientists on a Feadship and disseminate knowledge to an expectant world.”

One of the key parameters in this latter objective has been fulfilled by the layout of Relativity. M/Y Relativity has a futuristic, organic drop-shaped superstructure containing different decks that meet the distinctive uses for which she is designed, making her ideal for luxury yacht charters or for private use. There is an open-plan Society Deck, which contains a special auditorium for giving presentations in a dynamic and creative environment.

The Society Deck also includes the main and crew entrances, with large fold-down platforms. An abundance of outdoor deck space will allow people to take time out to consider what they have taken onboard from the think tank within. A special Infinity Path winds around the deck for those who prefer to pace around while contemplating matters and there is also a conference room for discussing the ideas that emerge.

One deck above is the Intelligence Deck, a functional zone designed around the requirements of the wise men and women who will accompany the owner on this travels. This includes six scientist ‘cells’ – rooms with a clean and minimalist flavour that will ensure that the distinguished professors and other great minds from the scientific community can ponder without distraction.

Relaxation for the residents of the Intelligence Deck is offered in the form of a dining room and lounge. This ensures that the Family Deck above can remain a strictly private place for the owner and his family members and friends to enjoy a holiday in calm and luxurious surroundings. There are three stunning comparable VIP suites, a separate dining and lounge area. The smoking lounge in the bow is for the owner to enjoy his ubiquitous pipe and contemplate the universe in peace and tranquillity. This will ensure that the large outdoor areas can offer a smoke-free al fresco experience. It will also be the ideal place to watch the bravehearts who dare take the 4th dimension slide, which runs half the length of the yacht and allows guests to splash into the ocean at something close to the speed of light.

There are a wide range of other entertaining diversions onboard superyacht Relativity, as you would expect from a Feadship Future Concept. These include a radical design for a pop-up wheelhouse, which retracts into the superstructure when the boat is at anchor to create a covered deck. At the press of a button, seating and dining options are offered in this superb location. This solution responds to the notion that while captains need the best possible views when at sea, the wheelhouse is sited in a premium area of the yacht and rarely used when at anchor.

Another fresh idea onboard the Future Concept Relativity is to hide the tenders behind the superstructure rather than storing them in the bow or lazarette. This required an impressive launching system from an area which is not a prime space. Two 10 metre tenders are hidden in the midship’s superstructure ‘cheeks’. A part of the structure unveils the tenders and lowers them into the water.

Taking forward elements of the propulsion concept on yacht Breathe, Relativity’s power is based on the use of a single centreline engine with controllable pitch propeller and fixed booster jets to port and starboard. A top speed of 18 knots can be achieved on the central engine with low fuel consumption, while engaging the two boosters increases the speed to 28 knots.

A Schilling rudder is added to the propellers aft. Thanks to its smart section shape, these rudders will, when paired, allow for the propeller thrust to be fully reversed, as well as facilitate extreme steering angles of up to 70 degrees. This is a very interesting option as no additional moving parts are involved. The twin rudder arrangement is also known as a VecTwin installation, specifically designed for twin rudders behind a single propeller.

Relativity features first class facilities for 25 crew members in ten double cabins, three single cabins, one officer’s cabin and a captain’s cabin. This will ensure that a yacht which will be used for multiple purposes will have no problem with attracting and retaining the right calibre of staff. Like everything else on-board Relativity, this carefully considered approach reflects Feadship’s relentless pursuit of perfection, and the very specific requirements

Feadship at the 2012 Dubai International Boat Show

February 13, 2012

Feadship will be attending the Dubai International Boat Show 2012. The event, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary, is expected to be bigger and better than ever, with thousands of visitors expected to come to the boat show between 13 and 17 March. Feadship will arrive at the Dubai show in good heart having signed eight orders for its superyachts during the recession.

Feadship has a long and distinguished history of serving clients in the Middle East that dates back to Persian royalty in the 1930s. Since then, the superyacht builder Feadship has built 25 yachts for Middle East owners, the majority being for presidential or royal families. Launched in 1978 for Saudi clients, the 64.64m motor yacht Al Riyadh was the largest Feadship in the fleet for almost a quarter of a century until the launch of the 65m superyacht Wedge Too – also for owners from the Middle East.

The fast pace of development in the world of superyachts is illustrated by the fact that Feadship’s current order book includes the first Feadship megayacht to break the 100-metre barrier, as well as various other projects ranging from 45 to 99 metres . This impressive 100m + superyacht project by Feadship will be the largest yacht built to date in the Netherlands and the first to comply with the recently published Passenger Yacht Code regulations (PYC13-36) for yachts of this size carrying up to 36 passengers.

At the Dubai show Feadship will showcase the latest Feadship Future Concept called Qi and display models of the 81m motor yacht Air and 77.70m yacht Tango . It will also be sharing news with visitors on the other Feadships launched over the past year including M/Y Fountainhead (87.78m), motor yacht Musashi (87.78m), yacht Air (81m), Lady Britt motor yacht (63m) and the Helix yacht (45m). Each sets a new standard of excellence in its own right.

“At Feadship, custom still carries its original, pure meaning,” says Francis Vermeer, head of marketing. “We are your first port of call for a personal superyacht that is truly tailored to your individual requirements. Our custom designs are created from scratch, and many Feadships have been inspired by clients from the Middle East region and there are no holds barred on their imagination.”

The team at Feadship would be pleased to make private appointments in advance, either at the show or elsewhere during the show dates.

Feadship luxury motor yacht Qi has four guest suites on the lower deck, each with a private terrace. The main deck lounge can be converted into a cinema with a 180-degree screen, an entertainment/party space or a seating area for relaxation. Hull doors amidships fold out to reveal a large spa and a portside gym. The sun deck boasts a camp-style fireplace, a central feature in the middle of the Jacuzzi. A high level of privacy of her guests is also achieved while still offering open panoramas and provide easy access to the water. 56m motor yacht Qi would make for a beautiful luxury charter yacht.

New 56m Future Feadship Qi Motor Yacht gives energy for life

September 22, 2011

The New Future Feadship Qi (pronounced chee), is the sixth Future Concept Feadship has unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show in as many years. Like its predecessors, Feadship Qi has been created by De Voogt Naval Architects to reflect the likely requirements and desires of the next generation of superyacht clients. Measuring 56 metres (183’9”) in length, Superyacht Qi is designed to generate a fresh sense of energy among owners and their family & friends as they reconnect with nature in the most inspiring surroundings.

The word Qi (pronounced chee) represents an Eastern idea of a circulating life force or energy flow that permeates creation. This notion neatly encapsulates the essence of the 2011 Future Concept Feadship, incorporating the lines of the Chinese character in its design and making the most of her surroundings both inside and out.

Inspired choices

The ancient way of writing ‘qi’ in Chinese consisted of three wavy lines, an image of one’s breath as seen on a chilly day. These curved lines are clearly visible in the shell above yacht Qi’s waterline and mirrored in the hull. Another inspiration both visually and conceptually was the snow owl, an elegant creature that spends most of its time soaring gently or in steady flight.

Snow owls are renowned for the way they protect offspring in their nest, and Feasship superyacht Qi also features protected areas for the whole family. At the same time the yacht can also be opened up to allow guests to bask in the environment and enjoy all forms of outdoor entertainment and watersports.

“Qi combines phenomenal views of the changing environment outside while enhancing a safe and secure feeling within,” says Ronno Schouten, who led the team of designers and naval architects during the ten-month project. “We set out to prove that a wish for privacy need not conflict with open panoramas and an easy connection to the water. The yacht’s luxury areas are centred around the energy tower, which rises through all decks and connects people literally and metaphorically with the outside world. The glass exterior bathes the interior with light at this virtual centre point, offering fabulous views and a genuine sense of outdoor-in living. The fore and aft ship open areas provide a seamless transition from private to public, from interior intimacy to outdoor pleasures.”

Fabulous facilities

Qi offers all the facilities imaginable for maximum onboard comfort. The four guest cabins are located on the lower deck, each with sliding doors to their own private terrace. Amidships the hull doors open up to reveal a gigantic spa and a portside gym. The main deck lounge offers stunning vistas and be easily transformed into a party area, seating and relaxation zone or a gigantic cinema with a 180-degree screen. Cosiness is assured on the sun deck, where a ‘camp fire’ can be enjoyed at night in the centre of the Jacuzzi.

Shaped for performance

A blend of past experience and future thinking is also seen with yacht Qi’s propulsion set-up. In 2010 De Voogt came up with the revolutionary Breathe Superyacht concept, which reduces fuel consumption by 20 to 40 percent at cruising speed. The subject of enormous interest, this system has been developed in more detail with Feadship‘s suppliers and is now ready to be incorporated in a new design.

To achieve such fuel consumption the hull has a wedge-like shape with the centre of buoyancy far aft, while the wave damping aft body creates negligible stern waves. As there is only one shaft line, appendage resistance is significantly reduced. The system has only one main propeller, making the most of the very latest innovations. Reliability is ensured by fitting a large contra rotating and azimuthing sternthruster just aft of the main propeller. This can provide Qi with a speed of up to 12 knots, sufficient for getting home should something happen to the main engine.

Smart redundancy

While a conventional twin screw yacht will lose all its propulsion capacity in case of fire or damage in the engine room, Qi’s propulsion concept sees the main engine and generators placed in separate rooms to guarantee the highest level of redundancy.

Three different propulsion modes can be distinguished. In dynamic positioning or diesel electric mode only the generators will be running, providing clean and quiet operation up to 12 knots. In range mode only the medium-speed diesel will be operating, consuming 10 percent less fuel than its high speed equivalent. Electrical power for hotel load and the thruster are provided via a shaft generator, further reducing fuel consumption and generator running hours. Finally, at full speed both the main engine and generators are deployed to offer maximum power.

For another opportunity to see Qi on display this year, visit our exhibition stand at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (October 27 – 31, 2011).

Dutch Superyacht builder Feadship heads for Monaco Yacht Show and FLIBS with confidence

September 19, 2011

The superyacht builder Feadship is performing better than ever. This year to date the world’s number one luxury motoryacht brand Feadship has launched six superyachts with a total length of 450 metres (almost 1500 feet!). Four out of the thirteen new entries in the recently published Top 100 List by Yachts International magazine are Feadships: Superyacht Musashi and motor yacht Fountainhead each measuring 87.78 metres, Yacht Air which is 81 metres in length and the 77.70 m M/Y Tango.

Add in the other two launches by Feadship this year – the 63-metre superyacht Lady Britt and the new F45 Helix yacht – and no other yard has delivered such a combined length of superyachts in 2011. This record-breaking performance means that the Feadship directors and managers will be attending the Monaco and Fort Lauderdale boat shows in great spirits.

“The current trend at Feadship illustrates that our clients are very confident in ordering large yachts with us”, says Feadship’s marketing manager Francis Vermeer. “In addition to the 101-metre build, there are several ‘XL’ Feadships contracted, ranging in length from 78 to 99 metres. The Feadship order book remains very strong as we continue to set the benchmark of premium quality.”

Two examples – 45m motor yacht Helix and 39m Yacht Go – will be on display at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show and Fort Lauderdale shows. Lady Britt superyacht will also be present in Monaco, available for viewing on an exclusive appointment-only basis. “The wide diversity of projects over the last year proves once again the broad interest in the Feadship portfolio,” adds Vermeer. “From medium custom-series yachts to giant fully custom Feadships, our range caters for all preferences.”

The Monaco Yacht Show will also feature the unveiling of the sixth Future Concept Feadship Qi, plus highly impressive models of Air and Tango.
