The motor yacht ARCTIC SUNRISE is a 50 metre 163 (foot) large steel ship which was created by Vaagen Verft A/S and devised by Vaagen Verft. A generous research boat ARCTIC SUNRISE is a particularily well designed Norway built superyacht which was launched to accolade in 1975. She could be considered a older research boat.

The Greenpeace ship ARCTIC SUNRISE has a special history - from its beginnings as a commercial seal hunting vessel, it is now involved in taking action to stop US Star Wars missile tests, protesting against clear cutting in the Amazon and documenting climate change in the Polar Regions. Before Greenpeace owned the motor vessel ARCTIC SUNRISE Greenpeace had previously confronted the ship while it was delivering equipment for the French government to build an airstrip through a penguin habitat in the Antarctic. Greenpeace bought the Arctic Sunrise in 1995 using a company called Arctic Sunrise Ventures Ltd, because the ship's Norwegian owners would not sell it to Greenpeace. The yacht has a rounded hull with no keel, so that the ship lifts out of the ice instead of being crushed by it.
