Transatlantic Superyacht Regatta – Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Cup 2011

October 31, 2011

The entry list for the Transatlantic Superyacht & Maxi Yacht Regatta which starts on the 21st November 2011 is growing with a total of nine sailing yacht giants confirmed to assemble in Tenerife in less than one month’s time.  The 2011 Transatlantic Superyacht Regatta – Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Cup is scheduled to leave Santa Cruz in Tenerife (Spain) on 21st November destined for Virgin Gorda (British Virgin Islands) and the new winter base of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS). The event, organized by the International Maxi Association (IMA) and the YCCS with the collaboration of Real Club Nautico de Tenerife, will see participating yachts cover approximately 2700 nautical miles and encounter varied wind and sea conditions.

A wide range of maxi yachts will be competing in the 2011 Transatlantic Superyacht Regatta – Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Cup: the largest boats in the fleet are the newly launched 66 metre Dykstra-designed ketch superyacht Hetairos on her first regatta outing; the 54.35 metre S/Y Shenandoah of Sark, a legendary yacht launched in 1902, and sailing yacht Zefira, owned by Italian Salvatore Trifirò. The fleet also includes the 35 metre Sojana charter yacht, owned by Peter Harrison, skippered by Marc Fitzgerald and winner of last year’s edition of the Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Cup, and Tobias Koenig’s Grey Goose of Rorc, a Swan 82. Andrea Recordati’s Indio and Carla Comelli’s Kenora will represent both Italy and the Wally class. The “smallest” in the fleet are the 18.20 metre Swan 60 Emma, owned by Johann Killinger, and the 20.2 metre Karuba V. After leaving Tenerife the participating yachts will be looking to pick up on the northeast trade winds between approximately 30° latitude and the equator which generally blow at a steady 11 to 15 knots. As the maxis near Virgin Gorda and the finish line the more gentle Alizé Caribbean trade wind will kick in and crews can expect to be accompanied by 10 to 12 knots of north easterly winds.

The Transatlantic Superyacht Regatta – Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Cup 2011 is perfectly timed to tie in with the traditional transfers from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean for the winter charter season and will have participants arriving on the other side of the Atlantic as the superyacht racing season kicks off there. Many of the participating yachts also plan to participate in the Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous organized by the YCCS and Boat International Media in Virgin Gorda in March 2012.

Trophies will be awarded at the prize giving ceremony scheduled to take place on 8th December where participants will enjoy a special sneak preview of the services and hospitality of the newly opened YCCS Clubhouse. The YCCS Virgin Gorda Clubhouse will be officially inaugurated on 3rd January 2012 while the purpose built YCCS Marina has been operational since March 2011.

A satellite tracking system accessible online will keep fans and supporters up to date on each yacht’s progress for the duration of the race.

About the event

The Transatlantic Maxi Yacht Cup was created in 2007 and then run in 2009 and in 2010. The event was created by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaboration with IMA in response to requests from owners for a transatlantic race dedicated specifically to maxi yachts. The regatta is also part of the IMA’s efforts to establish a seasonal circuit for maxis that will allow owners to compete in summer offshore events in the Mediterranean and Europe before moving to the Caribbean for the traditional winter racing season.

Builder: Cantieri Navali Codecasa

Interior Design: Codecasa / Arch. Della Role

Year: 2011

After having visited motor yacht Vintage at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, the Jury have decided to include her not only in the ‘Yachts Over 40 metres’ category, but also in the ‘Interior Design’ category. General balance, cleanliness and simplicity of the yachts’ environment were the most important aspects taken into consideration by the Jury. Sophisticated and marine atmosphere has been created on board of the motor yacht Vintage, thanks to her unforced interior decor with functional division of spaces as well as the use of wood and light upholstery.

Codecasa 42m F73 motoryacht Guest Cabin

Category: Motor Yacht up to 24 metres

Winner: yacht Prestige 500

Builder: Prestige – Jeanneau

Interior Design: Garroni Design

Year: 2010

The Jury’s decision is mainly motivated by the high level of industrialisation achieved by the shipyard, which allows Prestige 500 motoryacht to reach an interesting quality and price balance. An award that goes equally to the product as well as the yard, which has been able to produce exclusive items designed with intelligence for the benefit of the consumer. She is a example of a successful design found rarely in this industry.

Technical Information:

LOA 15.2 m, Beam 4.5m, Displacement 14.1 tonne, Fuel 1.300 l, Engines IPS 2x435hp

Category: Motor Yacht from 24 to 40 metres

Winner: Custom Line 124 yacht

Builder: Ferretti Custom Line

Interior Design: Ferretti Custom Line / Zuccon International Project

Year: 2011

Ferretti Custom Line 124 superyacht is the largest planing vessel built by the shipyard, to date. Appreciated are the stylistic choices as well as the volume, which provides the yacht with a dynamic and aggressive look, more correspondent to a sport boat, rather than a traditional double deck motor yacht. At the same time, space distribution solutions have been applied to create large spaces, with attention to minimise the impact of the sea.

Category: Motor Yacht above 40m

Winner: motor yacht Nataly (ex Amnesia IV)

Builder: Benetti Yachts

Designer: Benetti / Redman Whiteley Dixon Ltd

Year: 2011

Nataly has got the Jury’s attention thanks to her lines, with some military inspired characteristics, including her straight bow and the half decks that create a fundamentally contemporary product. Without any force, the shipyard has been able to modernise a sector usually static, by integrating its range in the not so easy economic situation we have today. A recognition of  international competitiveness to the yard, for their capability to impose itself with personality in this crowded sector.

Technical Information:

LOA 65m, Beam 11.75m, Displacement 224 tonne, Fuel 160.000 l, Engines E x 2.260 hp

Benetti Yacht NATALY

Benetti Yacht NATALY

Category: Sailing Yacht Interior Design

Winner: Sense 50

Builder: Beneteau

Interior Designer: Nauta Yachts

Year: 2010

Shipyard and the designers have done an excellent job on creating a boat series with care worthy of higher class vessels, to generate a superior quality product accessible to all. The vessel features an innovative layout that allows for a great flow between the exterior and the interior spaces, found almost on the same level. This aspect is little developed on an industrial product. Unusual is also the cabin layout, with all cabins located at the bow.

Technical Information:

LOA 14.98m, Beam 4.86m, Draft 2.10m, Displacement 15.29 tonne, Sail area 127 sq. m.

Category: Sailing Yacht up to 24m

Winner: Mylius 19 e95

Builder: Mylius Yachts

Designer: Alberto Simeone

Year: 2011

The Jury’s decision is motivated by the overall quality of this project, 100% Italian (shipyard and the designer), based on great research of simple pure lines and details, balance of the spaces, ergonomics and the attention to performance. At the forefront is the construction of the all carbon hull. Resolved and very unique is the connection between the very versatile internal spaces: a sliding door unites the dinette and the owner’s stateroom creating an open space.

Technical Information:

LOA: 19.95m, Beam 4.96m, Draft 3.95m, Displacement 18,6 tonnes, Sail area 250 sq. m.

Category: Sailing yacht over 24m

Winner: SW 94 Kiboko superyacht

Builder: Southern Wind

Designer: Reichel Pugh / Nauta Yachts

Year: 2010

The Jury has awarded the overall outcome, well-balanced, both inside and outside. The products shows a very fine attention to detail indicating continued focus on design, which never expires in the pure exercise of style. The project represent an excellent concept of understanding and realisation of a yacht with the final purpose of true sailing; a result not always achieved by yachts similar to her size and to her level of finish.

Technical Information:

LOA 28.64m, Beam 6.66m, Draft 4.50m, Displacement 50.5 tonnes, Sail area 476 sq. m.

Category: Low Environmental Impact Yacht

Winner: Magellano 50 yacht

Builder: Azimut Yachts

Designer: Cor D Rover

Year: 2010

The award has been assigned for the vision of this project, that indicates an outlined direction to other competitors. The victory has not been assigned so much for the hybrid propulsion, on which the jury expressed some doubts, but for the use of recyclable materials used in construction. A yacht thought, designed and constructed to be recycled and at the same time with an attention dedicated to the finishes, including certified wood and natural fabrics.

Technical Information:

LOA 15.64 m, Beam 4.65m, Displacement 25 tonnes, Fuel 3.000 l, Engines 2 x 425 hp

Superyacht ZEFIRA

Category: Innovation Award

Winner: Sailing Yacht Zefira

Builder: Fitzroy Yachts

Designer: Ed Dubois

Year: 2011

The Jury appreciated the concept of the design and construction:  a yacht of large dimensions has been created, without a need to forcefully create a flybridge area for the wheelhouse. This measure, without detracting from the functionality, has resulted in very sleek lines that, together with the elegance and the high level of finish, determine the perception of the product’s excellence.

Technical Information:

LAO 49.7 m, Beam 9.95m, Draft 4.9 m, Displacement 322 tonnes, Sail Area 3.000 sq. m.

Ocean Yacht Systems to supply thruster for Fitzroy Yachts next Dubois 50m sailing yacht (Project G50)

June 28, 2011

Ocean Yacht Systems (OYS) based in Christchurch UK, have secured a second contract to supply the thrusters on the next Dubois 50m sailing yacht to be built at Fitzroy Yachts, New Zealand.

Ocean Yacht Systems to supply thruster for Fitzroy Yachts next Dubois 50m sailing yacht (Project G50)

Ocean Yacht Systems to supply thruster for Fitzroy Yachts next Dubois 50m sailing yacht (Project G50)

OYS have previously supplied bow and stern thrusters to the award winning 50m superyacht Zefira. After successful commissioning and trials on board S/Y Zefira in Auckland, the second Dubois 50m sailing yacht (Project G50) planned for build at the Yard was also awarded to OYS.

OYS has supplied 2 x 99kW (133hp) custom hydraulic swing thrusters for the Fitzroy Yachts 50m Flybridge Sloop G50. The unique thrusters are designed to be highly efficient as well as being mechanically locked in place when raised. When retracted there is little evidence of the thruster at all, leaving behind a completely faired hull providing minimal drag and optimising the sailing experience of these performance orientated superyachts.

“We find their (OYS’s) attitude and approach to business to be outstanding amongst our many suppliers,” comments Rodney Martin, MD for Fitzroy Yachts, “We want to keep OYS as the thruster of choice for our yachts and our plan is to recommend future clients to accept OYS as our preferred equipment.”

The 50 Dubois ‘Project G50’ is currently well underway at Fitzroy Yachts with launch planned in 2012.

Superyachts line up to take their place The Rendezvous in Monaco 2011 history

June 25, 2011

On Friday, in the heart of Port Hercule, a selection of the world’s finest superyachts are lined up along the Quai des États-Unis ready for the first full day of activities at The Rendezvous in Monaco 2011, an annual event for superyacht owners and their families.

The event kicked off yesterday afternoon with a private luncheon for the superyacht owners in attendance on board the host yacht, 64m Felicita West.  The luncheon, sponsored by Maybach, allowed owners to socialise with like-minded peers in a privatised setting, berthed alongside some of the most impressive superyachts on the water today.  Tony Harris, CEO of Boat International Media welcomed owners to The Rendezvous and Bernard D’Alessandri presented temporary memberships to the Yacht Club de Monaco.  A delicious three-course menu was devised especially for the occasion by the decorated chefs at the Fairmont Monte Carlo, and guests were treated to a private performance by world famous Stradivari violinist Benjamin Schmid.

For California native June Grossberg, who has a permanent berth for her 27m motor yacht Volare Ancora in Fontvieille, the performance by Benjamin Schmid was the highlight of Day 1. ‘I love classical music and to have a private performance by an artist of Benjamin’s caliber in such an intimate setting was a unique experience; one I’ll never forget. Combining the beauty of the yachts in this fantastic setting with this performance was just perfect.’

In the evening, all Rendezvous guests were welcomed to the Principality with a Cocktail on the Quai des États-Unis, sponsored by Monaco Tourism and attended by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.  The champagne continued to flow as owners opened house for the Rendezvous Yacht Hop, inviting guests onboard for canapés and hospitality.  Celebrity chefs from the Relais & Chateaux Group joined in the fun and prepared some of their signature dishes onboard participating yachts.  Musical entertainment created a wonderful party atmosphere on the dock, as owners and their guests reconnected with old acquaintances and made new friends in Monaco, the glamorous home of superyachting.

As guests strolled from one yacht to the next, they were tempted by the inspired creations of bartending crew participating in the first annual Rendezvous Cocktail Competition.  A new addition to the programme this year, crew were set the challenge of creating a unique, vodka based cocktail.  An expert panel of judges decided the winner, who will remain secret until the Rendezvous Prize Giving at the Yacht Club de Monaco on Sunday.

Today looks set to be another beautifully sunny day in Monaco – perfect for a day à la plage, as Rendezvous guests prepare for the Cruise in Company to Paloma Beach in St Jean Cap Ferrat.
