World Yacht Racing Forum´s optimism for yacht racing industry

December 15, 2011

According to the World Yacht Racing Forum´s speakers the yacht racing industry is as strong as ever, and provides its partners, venues, athletes and events with great opportunities despite the difficult economy.

The fourth edition of the World Yacht Racing Forum started on Tuesday December 13, in Estoril, Portugal. Over 200 delegates attended the presentations, collecting precious information and meeting the industry’s key actors during the networking breaks.

“Most of the world’s best boat builders are here”, declared Dominique Dubois, President of Multiplast. “For us, it is a unique opportunity to meet the designers, the team managers, the sailors… The Forum is really the place to be if you are involved in the yacht racing industry, because this is where you meet the world’s best in the field. Farr yacht design, Green Marine, Mark Turner, the Volvo Ocean Race, the America’s Cup, Multi One Design… Everyone that counts is here.”

Kevin Roberts, Editorial Director of SportBusiness Group, introduced the debates by setting the context: “Despite the economic situation, sponsorship carries on increasing worldwide. No less than 35 billion US dollars have been invested in sponsorship this year, mainly in sports (77%), and this figure will increase next year. However sailing isn’t benefiting enough from this trend. The beneficiaries are mainly football, golf, basketball or Formula 1 whilst sailing doesn’t seem to be on the radar. There are however many reasons to be cheerful and to look forward to the future.”

The sport is indeed attractive, and current and new projects do have a great appeal and potential. The Multi One Design Circuit, for example, will see its first sailing season in 2012. Introduced at a previous World Yacht Racing Forum, in Monaco, the MOD circuit has now become a reality, dragging partners, suppliers and services providers in its wake.

Many of today’s speakers, split in different debates, highlighted the fact that the sport needs more creativity to appeal to a wider audience. New media and social networks are at the heart of the sports development; they were widely discussed, explained and analysed by various experts such as Aaron Savage, Director, Interactive Mix, who reminded the audience that the key to success remains the message. “Stop focusing on the technology, he said. Focus on what Internet can do and it is huge.”

Hertha Baumann, Vice President PR and Events management, Mirabaud, gave the “Yacht Racing Photo of the Year” as an example. “We have touched 15’000 people in less than two weeks, and reached a public that is much wider than the usual sailing audience. It is for us a different way to show our passion for sailing, and also the proof that there is a huge interest for the sport.”

Talking about how to measure the commercial return of the sport, Nathalie Quéré, head of sponsorship, BT Global Services, highlighted the fact that the sport of sailing provides unique emotions and opportunities. “You can’t just measure your commercial success by calculating your ROI. You need to include other elements such as the emotional factor or the networking opportunities offered by the sport, and those elements are not measurable with conventional tools.”

Andrew Pindar, one of sailing’s long lasting commercial supporters, summarised the day by saying that “there simply isn’t any other platform where to exchange ideas and experiences, and to discuss what we have learned over the year. The World Yacht Racing Forum provides a platform that stimulates the debates and helps the promotion of the sport worldwide.”

In the YRDTS today sessions went long and lively, with a full room of influential designers, builders, rule-makers and owners discussing a wide variety of topics, ranging from Non-destructive testing to the development of HPR, a new Grand Prix rating rule concept. Keynote speaker Pat Shaughnessy of Farr Yacht Design spoke of the need to utilize the creative talents and insights inherent to all competitive sailors to adjust in these economic times to new opportunities to engage more youth-oriented projects within the sailing industry, and also to apply their talents to new fields outside the marine industry as well. Bill Pearson of North Technology Group spoke of this as well in his description of the latest applications for TPT (Thin-Ply Technology), which range from AC72 wingsails to parts for Formula 1 race cars.

In TP52 design, there was wide agreement that the boat and class will have an active new life outside the MedCup, with a meeting scheduled soon to decide their direction for 2012. In the session on Non-destructive testing it was agreed that while great tools exist to determine potential problems in laminate construction, there are standards still needed to determine when these problems may or may not contribute to part failure. After describing the standard design package for the AC72 catamaran to be used in the 34th America’s Cup, Vincent Prevost of VPLP explained that teams wanting to optimize use of this package better sign up by next month, as there is a 10-month build time needed and then only 30 sailing days left in 2012 to comply with the AC rules…so far one of the three teams currently committed to build an AC72 has purchased this package, but will likely use it as a reference only.

The last session on HPR was the longest of the day, as the concept and design parameters were presented by four panelists hoping to see the Grand Prix racing community embrace this new continuum-based rule project which promotes the design of high-performance offshore-capable boats. Thus far there has been some strong interest in this, so the HPR group is promised to make a beta version available for comment by year’s end.

Tomorrow’s sessions will focus on the world’s top yacht racing events, the Volvo Ocean Race, the America’s Cup and the Olympic Games. Sessions will also be dedicated to yacht club management and the place of women in the sport.

Forty photographers competed for the title of “Yacht Racing Image of the Year, presented by Mirabaud”, among them some of the best yachting photographers in the world. The images were viewed by over 25,000 people over a period of two weeks and judged by 2,500 who cast their vote via the World Yacht Racing Forum website and the event’s Facebook page. World Yacht Racing Forum guests also voted and the decision was unanimous.

The spectacular award-winning photograph features Nathan Outridge, Moth and 49er world champion, racing the Moth world championships in Belmont, Australia in January 2011.

Thierry Martinez has been photographing yachts since 1987 and has covered almost every sailing discipline over the years from dinghies to the Volvo Ocean Race and the America’s Cup. This is the second year running that the 56 year old has won the award.

“I am very happy to win this award again,” he said. “It is the only award dedicated to our sport and I consider it a great honour. It is the reward for one photograph, which I humbly accept, but it also symbolises my passion for yacht racing and marine photography which have been at the heart of my life for 25 years.”

“We are delighted to award this title to the photographer Thierry Martinez,” said Antonio Palma, CEO and partner of Mirabaud, private bankers. “All of the photographs submitted to the competition were of a very high standard and the choice was a difficult one. The public chose an image that reflects the current trends – spectacular, daring and dynamic.”

World Yacht Racing Forum: Continuity is Key to Success

December 14, 2010

The World Yacht Racing Forum began today in front of 300 delegates and media from all over the world. Marketing experts discussed the growth of the sport and agreed that the lack of continuity is its main issue.

The third edition of the World Yacht Racing Forum has begun this morning in Estoril, Portugal, with an interesting Keynote address by the youngest America’s Cup winner of all times, Australian James Spithill (29 yo last February). “To succeed, our sport needs three elements: continuity, sustainability and a wider audience, he explained. This is the only way to provide a return on investment to the sports partners.”

Many of today’s speakers, split in different debates, reached the same conclusion. “The main difference between our sport and yours is stability and long term agreements”, explained Pau Serracanta, the Managing Director of Dorna Sports SL, organisers of the Moto GP. “Our schedule is repeated year after year, the events take place at the same time and place, the sponsors are with us for the long term. Continuity is the key to our success.”

“Football is an ongoing business; Formula 1 is an ongoing business; sailing isn’t”, said Volvo Ocean Race CEO Knut Frostad. There shouldn’t be new events: we should consolidate what we have and improve, not diversify.” Eddie Owen, CEO of RORC agrees: “We have too many layers in the sport. Every part of it is important but it makes it difficult to sell.”

Today’s debates were chaired by specialists of marketing and brands, including Richard Moore, CEO of Capitalize, who told the audience that global sport sponsorship figures worldwide are growing again – yet sailing remains a marginal part of the growth. “The sport of sailing is not growing as it should”, confirmed Frostad. “Our objective is to take our event to the mainstream media; this is the key and our ambition is to double our visibility.”

Other event organisers have different priorities, for example Franck David (Multi One Design) who wants to promote the eco-friendliness of his new coming Class, Jim O’Toole (World Match Racing Tour) who ambitions to organise fifteen events worldwide and propose a more complete multimedia solution, or Luc Talbourdet (IMOCA) who wants to attract more international teams and skippers.

Taking his team BMW ORACLE Racing as an example, Spithill illustrated the fact that both the Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup managements agree on the fact that media coverage and television are paramount. “A very polished TV package will capture the audience”, he said. “Look at Nascar or the Tour de France. Those two events are very repetitive and have few exciting moments; yet they get a massive audience thanks to the quality of the TV production, the commentary and the technology involved.”

Another key factor is the personality of the athletes. “Motorbike racing wouldn’t reach such audiences without Valentino Rossi. Skiing has lost a lot since Alberto Tomba stopped his career. Cycling would be poor in the US without Lance Armstrong…” observes Pau Serracanta. And sailing? “There are no big personalities in our sport”, considers Mark Turner, Executive Chairman, OC ThirdPole. “It’s a matter of opportunity: you can’t manufacture them.” A point of view Clifford Bloxham, Head of Athlete Representation, Octagon doesn’t share: his job is precisely to help build those personalities. “It is critical for the success of an athlete and an event to become a brand. The performance is key, but they also need to develop their key values and know where they will be in twenty years time. An athlete should develop his logo early on in his career, and have long-term vision.”

The morning discussion ended up with a commitment from some key race organisers to meet more regularly in order to share ways of growing the sport, possibly through ISAF.

World Yacht Racing Forum starts tomorrow.

Some of the international yacht racing industry’s key issues will be debated over the next two days and the expectations are rising amongst the numerous delegates. This year’s hot issues include the future of international yacht racing from a commercial perspective. How can sailing compete for sponsorship against mainstream sports? What is the future for sailing’s premier events? How can sailing events create brand partnerships? Those are some of the many questions that will be debated by the panel of experts over the next two days.

The speakers include well known names such as James Spithill, Loïck Peyron, Knut Frostad, Mark Turner, as well as speakers and panellists from outside of the sport who will share their views on ways in which sailing and yacht racing can learn from other major global disciplines.

The future of some of the sport’s iconic events will also be debated with a session focusing on the next Olympic Games and our sport’s sustainability as an Olympic discipline, followed by a debate on the new America’s Cup format and the repercussions it will have on international yacht racing.

Besides the official sessions, the World Yacht Racing Forum will once again offer unparalleled networking opportunities and a unique possibility to meet representatives from other disciplines in an informal way, to discuss, debate and sometimes even negotiate the sport’s future.

Details of the conference programme and speakers are available on the event’s website: www.worldyachtracingforum.com
