The Awlgrip finished yacht Attessa IV wins Best Rebuilt Yacht of 2011 World Superyacht Awards

May 27, 2011

The award winning motor yacht Attessa IV, launched in December 2010, is the result of the largest refit in North America to date. The Attessa IV, formally known as Evergreen (launched in 1999), has been declared the Best Rebuilt Yacht of 2011 at the World Superyacht Awards, May 7, 2011.

Evergreen, as she was then known, arrived in North Vancouver at the Washington Yachting Group yard in spring 2007 to begin the “world’s finest & most ambitious refit,” said Chris Toole, Global Senior Product Manager, Awlgrip. Her transformation took 3 ½ years to complete, which included lengthening the vessel from 300 ft to 330 feet.

As a part of the extensive re-fit the existing coatings of the yacht Attessa IV were tested extensively for their integrity and in many cases removal, before application of approximately 15,000 Gallons of Awlgrip products, including 4500 gallons of Awlgrip primers, such as Hullgard, Ultra Build, High Build & 545 Epoxy Primer. Washington Yachting Group chose Awlgrip’s complete system due to the ease of use, extended recoating intervals and reduced working time, saving numerous hours on this ambitious project.

As part of the complete Awlgrip system for the superyacht Attessa IV, Washington Yachting Group also chose to use the Awlfair® mixing machine along with Awlfair LW, the premium, epoxy trowelable fairing compound, to fair the existing and new sections of the hull.

The creamy smooth texture and easy application properties of Awlfair made it the obvious choice for Attessa IV and an estimated 8,000 gallons were used to create the smooth, ‘better than new’ look the owner desired. Tony McCormick, lead Awlgrip Technical Representative on the project, said “labor savings were equivalent of two full time workers by the use of the fairing machine, which operated flawlessly throughout the three year refit”.

Another milestone for this project was the extensive use of Awlcraft® SE, the revolutionary metallic topcoat system on the exterior of the sunbridge superstructure and mast as well as various entry areas, all in a custom silver metallic including a specially color matched non-metallic pearl for the satellite domes and radar antennas. The fast drying, high opacity product provided an excellent and even metallic finish on significantly large surfaces not normally considered suitable for metallics.

Completing the amazing transformation were over 800 gallons of Awlgrip topcoat to give an unmistakable finish and performance for an unrivalled masterpiece. Awlgrip is proud to have been such an integral part of this successful project and looks forward to other exciting projects with Washington Yachting Group in the future.

The interior of the Sycara V yacht is dedicated to a spacious and barrier-free living, as can be seen on the main deck, which offers an open space of more than 25m from the dining room to the library, providing the feeling of living in a penthouse. The entrance of the yacht leads into a wide lobby with an elevator, which connects all the decks from the lower deck to the sun deck. Holland Jachtbouw superyacht Calliope wins at World Superyacht Award

May 09, 2011

Holland Jachtbouw have announced that their most recent motor yacht launch, the 42-metre superyacht Calliope, has won the World Super Yacht Award for Best Three-deck Semi-displacement or Planing Motor Yacht. The award ceremony took place in the suitably splendid surroundings of the Guildhall in London on the evening of May 7, where the management team from Holland Jachtbouw were on hand to pick up the prestigious Neptune trophy.

“Seeing the incredibly high standard of the nominees for this award it is truly an honour for us that superyacht Calliope was chosen as winner by our industry peers,” says Tako van Ineveld, Director at Holland Jachtbouw. “The other boats in the category were all built by dedicated powerboat yards who specialise in this field. It is unique that Holland Jachtbouw, which has made its name for creating famous sail yachts like Windrose and Athos, can also win such an award for only our second motoryacht. This speaks volumes for the excellence of the yard’s building team and the way we have been able to incorporate sailing yacht standards of finish and fine detailing into the fully custom motorboat environment.”

Another major reason for the success of motor yacht Calliope is of course the exquisite design by Bill Langan, who sadly passed away just after the yacht was completed. “It was both a pleasure and a privilege to work with Bill on one of his final projects,” adds Van Ineveld. “This award is a testimony to his abiding legacy of design excellence.”

Dubois Wins at World Superyacht Awards 2011

May 09, 2011

It was a ‘clean sweep’ of award wins for Dubois at Saturday’s World Superyacht Awards 2011, as presented by Boat International Media. Dubois would like to congratulate and thank all those involved with these wonderful yachts.

zefira

zefira

Sailing Yacht of the Year:  Sailing Yacht Zefira

Best Sailing Yacht 45m+:  Zefira

Zefira is the 7th Dubois design to be built by Fitzroy Yachts and signifies a new and appealing development both above and below decks. This 49.7m fast cruising sloop is the largest sloop Dubois Naval Architects has designed without a flybridge. She is of aluminium construction with a bulb keel and a maximum beam of 9.95m. Zefira’s lines, silhouette and technical performance are something to be admired. Zefira was built for Italian owners who are wonderfully passionate and artistic. Previously owning an older Dubois-designed sloop, the challenge to us was to combine our extensive experience with a fresh look at style, while still embodying all the features which combine seaworthiness with performance. Comfort below was essential, as was the detail and finish. This has been provided by the inimitable skills of Remi Tessier.

Best Sailing Yacht 30m – 44.99m:  Sailing Yacht Imagine

imagine

The new Imagine is something of a landmark yacht for Dubois Naval Architects.
She bears the name of one of our favourites, launched in early 1993. Both were built by Alloy Yachts in New Zealand; the first Imagine at 33.6m was our third design constructed by that yard and the new Imagine, somewhat larger at 44.2m, is the 21st. A composite daggerboard, semi-balanced composite blade rudder and an Alloy Yachts custom helm feedback system enables superb performance and stability at speed. The owner so loved the first Imagine that he wanted to emulate the appearance and character of the earlier yacht and to embody in the new yacht many of her attractive features. The owner’s racing passion and close association with the America’s Cup, Volvo and TP52 races has seen, with great success, racing technology transferred and blended into this classic superyacht.

Judges’ Special Award:  Sailing Yacht Kokomo

kokomo

kokomo

Kokomo is, quite simply, the most advanced yacht of her type in the world today. She is the third yacht that we have designed for this owner, each one more advanced and larger than the last.In the case of the latest Kokomo, built by Alloy Yachts, New Zealand, she has something very special; her lifting keel. At 58.4m length overall, Kokomo’s keel weighs 130 tonnes and can be raised and lowered through 3.3m, allowing her access to all the major harbours and marinas around the world but also giving her a unique performance. The stability afforded by this arrangement and her powerful sloop rig takes this yacht into a new league. Kokomo’s interior, by Redman Whiteley Dixon, ensures her standards are right at the top of world rankings. Kokomo represents the pinnacle of what we at Dubois have been striving towards for so many years – combining great comfort, a wonderful lifestyle on board, both at sea and in harbour, with exceptional sailing performance.

Judges’ Commendation:  Sailing Yacht Lady B

Lady B

Lady B

Lady B is a very important yacht in the Dubois stable. She has a lifting keel which offers enhanced performance and puts her into a different league. Careful engineering was required so that the lifting mechanism would operate even if the yacht grounded. While there are many Dubois-designed yachts afloat of about her size, the 44.7m Lady B stands out for this reason. Her especially sleek appearance, matches the high sailing performance and expresses the character of this superb yacht. Dubois developed the interior layout and the interior designers, Rhoades Young, have made a beautiful job of styling the interior and attending to the many details. The result is a striking vessel both externally and within. Direct access to the owner’s stateroom from the aft deck is an interesting feature and is not only convenient but gives a wonderful light to this important area of the yacht. Beautifully built by Vitters Shipyard, Lady B is one of the most sophisticated and well finished yachts of her size in the world today and will stand out as being a craft of exceptional quality, beauty and performance.

Judges; Commendation:  Sailing Yacht Twizzle

twizzle

twizzle

Twizzle is the first Dubois-designed sailing superyacht to be built at the Royal Huisman Shipyard and at 57.5m, she is the largest Dubois-designed ketch built to date. Twizzle is a shallow draft centreboard yacht and builds on the considerable experience we gained with Nirvana. A large and powerful ketch rig together with sleek flowing hull lines and a super-efficient centreboard give Twizzle great performance under sail. The quality of her design and construction and the beauty of her interior styling make this yacht truly unique. Twizzle’s beautifully proportioned, minimalist teak deck conceals the secrets of her advanced technology along with two tenders, complimenting Twizzle’s clean and modern appearance. Twizzle is the very successful result of the owners’ vision for a high performance, high-tech and modern sailing yacht with all the comfort of a motor yacht. The owners have been central to this talented team, bringing their own ideas and significant experience to the process, adding challenge and momentum. In close collaboration with Redman Whiteley Dixon, who were the interior designers and exterior stylists, Dubois Naval Architects developed the hull and deck layout, sail plan, naval architecture, aluminium structure and propulsion layout into a perfectly integrated package.
