During a gala evening attended by a distinguished guest list of superyacht owners, their families, friends and luminaries of the superyacht industry, news broadcaster Natasha Kaplinsky presented the prized silver Neptune awards to the owners of the finest sail and motor yachts delivered in 2012.

Seventeen coveted Neptunes and three Judges’ Commendation prizes, custom made for the occasion by Baccarat, were awarded to the winners on the night.

Firstly Southern Spars would like to congratulate Alloy Yachts and Dubois Naval Architecture for their collaborated effort with the 47m superyacht Loretta Anne, winning the Motor Yacht of the Year 2013.

Southern Spars is very proud to once again be involved with many of the World Superyacht Awardees, supplying spars for luxury yacht Rainbow – Sailing Superyacht of the Year in 39m+ range, charter yacht Endeavour – Refitted Sailing yacht of the year, superyacht Hamilton – Judges special award for performance and Quintessential yacht – Judges special award for Catamarans.

Rainbow – Sailing Superyacht of the Year in 39m+ range

“Rainbow’s Southern Spars rig and rigging package goes hand in hand with her sleek lines. She utilises grand prix technology on her rig and rigging that some of the worlds most advanced maxis sport, including the current Volvo 70’s” says Project Manager Olivier Marthe. Her Southern Spars high modulus mast came out of the same mould as Endeavour, at 55.5m it is a little taller than Endeavour and is also equipped with the latest EC6 continuous rigging.

Endeavour – Refitted Sailing yacht of the year

Originally built in 1934 and reduced to being a complete wreck in the 1980s, luxury charter yacht Endeavour’s 2011 re-launch marked the completion of an extensive 18-month refit at Yachting Developments’ yard based in Hobsonville, Auckland. The Yachting Developments’ team has taken extreme care throughout the refit to preserve as much of the vessel as practical while taking advantage of 21st century sailing systems, such as a carbon fibre mast and EC6 carbon fibre rigging package from Southern Spars for enhanced performance and improved functionality.

Endeavour yacht’s future performance will benefit from the significant weight savings – an incredible 900kg on the boom, and three tonne on the rig and rigging from her previous rig – achieved by the Southern Spars’ Custom Projects team based in Avondale, Auckland.

Southern Spars would like to congratulate all of the boat yards, designers and suppliers involved in this years awards.

World Superyacht Award 2013 for WallyCento luxury yacht HAMILTON designed by Design Unlimited

May 10, 2013

The spectacular 30-metre WallyCento luxury yacht Hamilton added another award to her growing collection earlier this week, when she won a judges’ special award for performance, in the Sailing Yacht 30-39m category, at the 2013 World Superyacht Awards. The styling as well as lovely interior, both by Design Unlimited, played an important role in Hamilton yacht’s receiving the recognition of the international jury, tasked with choosing the winners.

In their citation the judges referred to her ‘comfortable, relaxing interior ambience’ and her ‘premium quality interior’. It was these attributes, combined with her exceptional performance and technical excellence, which led to her being marked out for the special award.

In recent years Design Unlimited has gained a reputation for designing interiors for high performance sailing yachts that deliver all the comforts required for family cruising yet use materials and build techniques that keep the weight to the absolute minimum. The layouts also ensure that they work equally well for racing and family crews, with the necessary facilities for both conveniently yet pleasingly positioned.

The attraction of these high quality, high performance ‘cruiser / racers’ in the 20 to 40+ metre range is expected to grow as they offer a dual solution to owners who want to win on the race course and yet enjoy time with friends and family on board their own boats when time permits.

“We’re delighted that Hamilton was awarded this prize and our thanks go out to the judges and all those who worked alongside us to make her such a successful boat,” said Design Unlimited’s Mark Tucker. “Modern materials and build techniques allow us to achieve things that were impossible just a few years ago, but above all it was a pleasure to work with the owner to create an interior that he will enjoy whatever kind of sailing he is doing.”

Below is a choice of the stylish charter yachts with design by Design Unlimited.

WallyCento Yacht HAMILTON – First Grand Prix Racing Yacht to Receive World Superyacht Award

May 10, 2013

Launched by Green Marine in Summer 2012, the majestic 100ft WallyCento yacht Hamilton has received a coveted Neptune award at the 2013 World Superyacht Awards, presented by Boat International Media in Istanbul earlier this week. Sailing yacht Hamilton was honoured with a Judge’s Special Award for Performance, in the Sailing Yacht 30-39m category. She represents the first contemporary racing yacht to win at the World Superyacht Awards.

The award was the result of Hamilton yacht’s achievement in combining high performance with a comfortable, relaxing interior.  The judges also recognised the exceptional challenge that Green Marine and its partners faced in creating a yacht that was both remarkably light for its size, yet capable of managing enormous loads when in racing trim. They summed up their verdict by saying: “The judges felt that this combination of thoroughbred Grand Prix racer and luxury cruising yacht, with a premium quality interior executed to the highest levels of craftsmanship, was well deserving of a Neptune.”

The award was received at the gala dinner by Marcel Müller, Managing Director of Green Marine, who later said: “We were lucky to undertake this project in partnership with a great team of designers, engineers, project managers and builders for an owner who had a clear vision in mind.

“As well as naval architects judel/vrolijk and interior designers and overall stylists Design Unlimited, I should particularly mention the fantastic contributions from project manager James Stagg who was instrumental in keeping the project on schedule, and Struik & Hamerslag UK who built the beautiful lightweight interior.”

One of the judges at the ceremony was heard to say that yachts like Hamilton were ideal for young, successful businessmen who wanted to own boats of the highest standard that had enough comfort for a weekend trip with family or friends, but at the same time were highly competitive and sexy. Another added that even though Hamilton did not look like a ‘normal’ superyacht, its build quality was to superyacht standards and hence it well deserved a superyacht award.

All-new WallyCento sailing yacht MAGIC CARPET3 makes her debut at Gaastra Palmavela regatta

May 07, 2013

Excellent performance marked the premiere of the all-new WallyCento sailing yacht Magic Carpet3. Just two weeks after her launch, Magic Carpet 3 yacht participated in Gaastra Palmavela regatta, running in Mallorca, from 1-5 May, out-matching all races in real time. She crossed the finish lines between five and 20 minutes ahead of the closest competitor.

“I’m highly satisfied with the outcome of this groundbreaking project, that engaged myself and my team for over two years, enthusiastically says the Owner and helmsman Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones. “Magic Carpet3 is precisely what I wanted and expected her to be, totally fulfilling my goals and briefs. She is the natural evolution of my breed of yachts: very fast, beautiful, comfortable, technologically advanced, and easy to sail.”

WallyCento, the new generation of sailing cruisers
Developed by Reichel Pugh naval architects with the exterior styling and interiors by Wally, she fully exploits the WallyCento box-rule to create a fast seaworthy sound cruiser-racer that benefits from the latest performance technology, respecting the Wally spirit.

“Cruising in comfort at the speed of the fastest maxi racer and racing at the highest level of competition is the dream of every passionate yachtsman – says Luca Bassani Antivari, Wally Founder and CEO – WallyCento is the first and only super yacht making this dream come true, and Magic Carpet3 truly reflects this concept.”

“We are thankful to Sir Owen-Jones who actively contributed to the definition and development of the WallyCento box-rule – continues Bassani – and gave Wally the opportunity to produce such an innovative super yacht carrying the unmistakable Wally pedigree.”

Luxury yacht Magic Carpet 3 is a step forward in yachting evolution: she embodies the new generation of high performance sailing cruiser, setting new higher standards in naval architecture, systems, equipments, and construction technology.

“As a truly passionate yachtsman and lover of performance and technology, the starting point of the development of Magic Carpet3, that is my third Wally, was the brief to design the fastest cruiser-racer in the World, with no limitations or other requirements,” explains Sir Owen-Jones. “We selected Reichel Pugh because they have great experience of designing very high performance maxi racers. They successfully interpreted the WallyCento box-rule and produced along with Wally, an explosively fast boat on all points of sail and in all wind conditions.”

Maxi-racer performance
Fully equipped with all the cruising amenities, her performance are closer to those of the fastest maxi racers (only -2% than Esimit) than to those of a traditional Wally 100-footer (10% faster on a windward-leeward course, and 25-30 % faster reaching).

Superyacht Magic Carpet3 is very fast in all conditions: in light air she behaves like a light yacht, in strong air she is so stable and powerful, to resemble an aircraft carrier! She shows incredible acceleration, and after a tack she is back to full speed after just 20 seconds.

During the sea trials in Saint Tropez, Magic Carpet3 yacht exceeded 21.5 knots of speed reaching in 20 knots of true wind speed. In the transfer to Palma de Mallorca, the Captain Danny Gallichan steadily sailed at 18 knots of speed with the small jib only (no mainsail), in 25 knots of true wind!

Sailing yacht Magic Carpet3 is the new “yacht to beat” in the Wally Class circuit as well as in other divisions of the Med regattas, and she will engage epic duels with Hamilton yacht, the first WallyCento that was launched in 2012 and showed the potential of this new type of yachts.

Ultra light displacement

The 100-foot cruiser, Magic Carpet3 yacht, is the epitome of Wally DNA, combining the latest and most advanced technology and design to produce a fast, easy and beautiful yacht. The quality of the construction of WallyEurope, using high/intermediate modulus carbon and female moulds CNC machined to limit the fairing, along with the extreme attention paid to each component and detail throughout all the construction, produced a breakthrough super yacht, very balanced and in perfect trim.

Characterised by the reduced displacement (only 50 tons), she is the lightest cruising yacht of this size ever built: compared to that of the previous 100-foot Wallys like charter yacht Y3K and luxury yacht Indio, the construction weight of Magic Carpet3 is 40 % lighter!

Cruising in comfort
As well as being a racing thoroughbred, superyacht Magic Carpet3 is first and foremost a very comfortable cruising super yacht featuring the latest easy-sailing systems, big interior volumes and large open-air living areas.

On deck, the social cockpit seats up to ten guests for formal dining. Large flush areas forward and aft, are fitted with sunpads for relaxing and enjoying life onboard. The twin-helm station is aft the social cockpit, where all the manoeuvres are concentrated enhancing safety for children and guest not involved in sailing.

The self-tacking jib simplifies sail handling with reduced crew when cruising. The teak laid slim coachroof is camouflaged with the rest of the deck, and the two minimal coamings are mother-of-pearl painted.

The colour scheme is a continuation of the previous two Magic Carpets: navy and white, that have become the distinctive mark of this series of yacht.

Down below, the salon with dining and lounge areas plus navigation and office, separates the service area aft from the guest accommodation that includes two double guest cabins with en-suites and the forward owners’ stateroom with ensuite separate head and shower rooms.

The large forepeak serves as an additional crew cabin when cruising, and is converted into sail locker in racing mode. To enhance the cruising capability, the aft lazzarette is equipped with an additional fridge and it increases storage capacity.

The interior style is bright, simple and clean, with teak and maple joinery combined with lacquered white ceiling and sides, and carbon details. The interiors are also built using lightweight construction technology. The overall aesthetics is innovative, elegant and timeless.

Never ending (re)evolution
With Magic Carpet3 yacht, Wally once again is far ahead in yachting development. “What attracts me about Wally is the development of the latest technologies and the continuous R&D to simplify sailing and improve performance, as well the Italian design flair peculiar to Wally that makes these yachts aesthetically unique and very appealing both outside and inside. And we have indeed achieved this result with my new Magic Carpet3,” concludes Sir Owen-Jones.

Sailing yacht Hamilton currently represents the pinnacle in the design and engineering of supersailing yachts, delivering an outstanding Grand Prix racing experience together with a luxurious interior featuring all the amenities necessary for comfortable family cruising.

As he accepted the award on behalf of all those involved with the design and build of the boat, Marcel Müller paid tribute to Luca Bassani of Wally Yachts, whose inspiration opened the way for this new class, and to the owner of Hamilton yacht who took this vision and assembled a project group capable of delivering a design that is practical and elegant together with the technological solutions that enable it to fulfil its enormous potential.

“This was an immensely challenging project that required all those involved to continuously develop new processes and techniques in order to meet the high performance, low weight targets set by the client,” added Marcel afterwards.  “We were fortunate to work with leaders in their respective fields, including naval architect judel/vrolijk, interior designer and exterior stylist Design Unlimited, and Adriana Monk of Monk Design.”

The result is a stunning yacht above deck and below, with powerful yet graceful lines and a spacious, welcoming interior.  Shown to the general public for the first time at last September’s Monaco Yacht Show, she stood out for both her looks and technological accomplishment.

Green Marine is based on the Solent on the south coast of England, and has built more winning composite racing yachts this decade than any other yard.  Its state-of-the-art facility is currently working on a range of new projects including the next generation of Volvo Ocean Race contenders.

WallyCento HAMILTON yacht wins IY&A award

April 22, 2013

The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2013 saw the beautiful WallyCento 100 HAMILTON yacht win the ‘Sailing Yacht 25-40m category. The  uniqueness of the IY&A Awards, organised by the leading design magazine design et al, lies in the fact that the winners are selected by members of the public via online voting, rather than by more usual panel of judges. The awards ceremony was held last Friday at the Connaught Hotel in London.

Luxury sailing yacht Hamilton features interior and exterior styling by Design Unlimited.  The first of the new WallyCento class, she is designed to combine both comfortable cruising and fast, exciting racing.  With that in mind the interior had to be designed and engineered to hit challenging weight targets yet show minimal compromise when it came to amenities and accommodation.

The result is a bright, airy interior using natural tones offset by splashes of colour set alongside carbon fibre elements for dramatic effect.

“We’re delighted that Hamilton has been voted the best new sailing yacht (25-40m) of the past twelve months,” said Design Unlimited’s Mark Tucker.  “We, along with the other partners involved in her design and built, put in a great deal of time and effort to produce a yacht that would fulfil the expectations of her owner, using the latest materials and technology.  We were very pleased with the result, and it’s wonderful to see that the wider public feel the same way.”

New Baltic 108 Yacht WINWIN with interior design by Design Unlimited

April 12, 2013

Design Unlimited has unveiled initial details of the interior design as well as specification for the Baltic 108 sailing yacht WinWin. The beautiful WinWin yacht is a 108ft (33m) composite sailboat, scheduled for completion at Baltic Yachts in early 2014.

Baltic 108 sailing yacht WinWin with interior design by Design Unlimited

Baltic 108 sailing yacht WinWin with interior design by Design Unlimited

With naval architecture by Javier Jaudenes, superyacht WinWin is a high performance cruiser / racer intended to excel at both. The owner of WinWin is an experienced long distance sailor who knows exactly what he wants from the yacht. Notable features include a lifting keel and a retracting glass bulkhead between the deck saloon and cockpit which allows seamless integration between both spaces. Performance is also a key priority, with Mark Tucker and his team at Design Unlimited tasked with keeping overall weight to a minimum.

As the leading interior design studio for yachts of this type, with the WallyCento sailing yacht Hamilton and the refit of the 30.5m charter yacht Leopard 3 two notable projects with a similar brief completed in 2012, Design Unlimited understood the need for an interior that was essentially minimalist yet still with all the comforts required for family cruising.

In response to the owners’ wishes the forward section is mostly taken up by an exceptionally generous master suite comprised of a large, full width cabin with en-suite shower room, and a study and owners’ lounge stretching down the port side complete with desk, three sided settee and ample storage. Facing that across the centreline is a Pullman cabin for the owners to use when passage-making, demonstrating that this yacht is intended for serious sailing.

Baltic 108 Yacht WINWIN - Interior by Design Unlimited

Baltic 108 Yacht WINWIN - Interior by Design Unlimited

The deck saloon of WinWin yacht is a well-proportioned seating and entertaining area with plenty of light, not least as a result of the retracting glass bulkhead that leads out to the cockpit to create a single, dramatic, unified space. Other features of the saloon include a daybed aft on the starboard side and side windows that can be opened.

The aft section of the Baltic 108 superyacht WinWin includes two twin guest cabins each with en-suite, plus a fully-equipped galley, crew mess with navigation station, and two Pullman cabins providing high-quality accommodation for up to four crew.

In keeping with the brief for a light, minimalist finish, the interior uses washed and limed oak veneers for the floors and interior joinery, while lacquered overheads aid in reflecting light throughout. Concealed light panels help maintain the atmosphere of clean simplicity.

Loro Piana, the Italian fabric house long associated with the world of sailing, supplied the fabrics used in the interior, while the linings came from Majilite. The leather upholstery and headboards were supplied by Edelman, and the fittings are by Dornbracht, Hansgrohe and Turnstyle.

“WinWin is an uncompromising cruiser/racer designed for owners who intend to spend many hours on board,” said Design Unlimited’s Mark Tucker. “It has been a pleasure to work with owners who have a clear vision of what they wish to achieve and we believe the result is a yacht that is perfect for extended, long-distance cruising as well as exciting racing. We look forward to seeing her afloat.”
