Portland Marina a part of RYA Active Marina Programme

November 08, 2011

12 berth-holders and club members were present at an Active Marina Skippers’ and Crews’ workshop event at Portland Yacht Club and Marina on 29 October. Sailor, writer and presenter Tom Cunliffe completed their day with an entertaining after-dinner speech following the club’s AGM.

Portland Marina, along with marinas across the country, has signed up to the new RYA Active Marina Programme, which encourages berth holders to make the most of life with their yacht through marina-based training workshops and by supporting organised cruises and social events in marinas.

The workshop included top tips and techniques on berthing, manoeuvring within a marina and securing to a mooring buoy. The conditions were dry with force 4 gusting 5/6 winds that tested all the participants, but were perfect for the workshops in the sheltered location of the marina and Portland Harbour.

Participant Ian Singleton commented: “This course has been very useful with something for everyone, irrespective of experience. If you only come away with a single nugget of advice then this course will have been exceptional value for money.”

Kate Dodson added: “This was an excellent session based on my learning needs as a new crew without powerboat experience. I’ve been encouraged to do more and I will be more safety aware.”

Rupert Fowke, Commodore of Portland Yacht Club, is delighted that the club is part of the Active Marina programme: “Firstly, it offers incredibly good value for money. Secondly, we feel that we are never too old to learn and welcome the opportunity to learn new techniques. Thirdly, we like the novel approach of the courses offered – in particular, those for reluctant spouses, away from their experienced partners, have aroused much interest.”

“In addition, Tom was an unqualified success. I have not laughed so much in years!”

In 2012 there will be a number of Active Marina events for both marina berth-holders and Yacht Club members.

Standard Horizon new CPN700i and CPN1010i Touchscreen Chart Plotters

November 08, 2011

Standard Horizon has just introduced the CPN700i and CPN1010i chart plotters, a new generation of touchscreen 7-inch and 10-inch full colour models with internal antennas, featuring a typical Standard Horizon innovation. They will be on display at METS 2011, stand 04.541.

CPN1010i

CPN1010i Touchscreen Chart Plotter

Perhaps the most versatile advance is that both models are the first ever to have built in Wi-Fi, allowing the navigator to access the internet and email when moored in a Wi-Fi hotspot. Movies and music can also be downloaded and played thanks to included Windows Media Player software and a USB port for a memory stick, whilst the plotters’ built-in front speakers are expandable via an audio port on the back to add a separate amplifier.

When navigating, the new CPN models are unsurpassed, with the option to use the very latest C-Map 4D charts from Jeppesen. This system not only provides the very latest in accurate electronic charting, but also allows for the overlaying of satellite photographs and vector charts, so the navigator can source all the detailed information available on an area. The 4D element refers to the fourth dimension of time, ensuring that the charting software receives the latest notices to mariners and other updates via the web. With C-Map 4D, there are two chart products on one chart, allowing the user to choose either Max or 4D content, and then unlock’ data or add new charts as they become available.

CPN700i

CPN700i Touchscreen Chart Plotter

With all this navigational power available, Standard Horizon has made the new CPN700i and CPN1010i as intuitive to use as possible, with some highly desirable operating features. There is a dual screen function, for example, which allows the plotter to be used with two separate plotter displays simultaneously – one zoomed in for close quarters navigation whilst the second offers a ‘bigger picture’ overview.

There are also three ways to manipulate the controls, either by touch screen, or by the ShuttlePoint knob to move the cursor, or via menus using the Rotary Knob with its push-to-enter facility. Hard keys allow the chart image to be tilted up or down, or even rotated through 360 degrees. A dedicated Chart key can be used instead of scrolling through menus to quickly show vector, raster or satellite information, with a Mark key to create a single waypoint.

Both the CPN700i and the CPN1010i can be expanded by linking them to a compatible VHF DSC fixed radio. This allows private polling to be made via a DSC directory, with the position of a polled vessel, or one sending a distress alert, to be shown on screen. The plotters can also be linked to the Standard Horizon GX2100E VHF DSC transceiver which also has a built in AIS receiver, for overlaying AIS targets on the chart screen. This will identify nearby vessels and show their course, speed and approach details on the screen. There is also the option to add the FF525 fish finder for which Standard Horizon offer a range of transducers.

Using a tough sunlight viewable screen (1024 x 600 – CPN1010i and 800 x 480 – CPN700i), and a 50 Channel WAAS GPS receiver, both plotters offer the very latest in state-of-the-art electronics, with the ability to update your emails, and music collection, whenever you are in range of Wi-Fi. There are even dual video inputs to connect the CPN1010i to NTSC or PAL video cameras or a standard DVD player. The 10 inch colour screen can be used to show an entire image, or picture in picture, ideal for remote engine room monitoring.

So confident is Standard Horizon about the build quality of each set, they are offering a 3-year hassle-free waterproofing guarantee. Prices start at: £999.95 inc VAT for the CPN700i and £1574.95 inc VAT for the CPN1010i.

MasterBus and CZone together

November 08, 2011

Since the integration of Mastervolt into the Marine division of Actuant Electrical the engineers at Mastervolt headquarters in Amsterdam and the BEP engineering team in New Zealand have been collaborating to bring the two companies networked technologies into one system.

C-Zone MasterBus Bridge

C-Zone MasterBus Bridge

Both companies have extensive CAN based networked systems made up of Digital Switching, Systems Monitoring and Power Conversion devices. “Bringing the CZone and MasterBus systems together has been a relatively easy task”, says Jarrod Sagar, Global Product manager for Digital Switching at BEP, “as both companies had the same original philosophy for these systems, which was to bring all the points of control and monitoring of the on board systems onto one intuitive display, a central point and seamless automation simplifies boat use for the user.”

The engineering teams have developed ‘CZone MasterBus Bridge’ as the link between the MasterBus and CZone systems. The Bridge is a simple plug-in unit that reads both protocols and allows units from each manufacturer, and others such as Simrad that use BEP’s NMEA2000, to become fully compatible. This means that components such as pumps, alarms, battery chargers and monitors can be controlled from a single touch screen.

“The popular MasterShunt battery monitor and ChargeMaster battery charger can now be connected to a BEP marine network, which is based on NMEA2000,” explained Marc Persoon, Mastervolt’s marketing manager. “As a result, the monitoring and control of the battery charger can now be done via the CZone display or other compatible display such as the multi-function marine navigation screens from Simrad and B&G. The CZone MasterBus Bridge has been developed to connect two great systems together, and bring you the best of both worlds.”

As with all Mastervolt products, the Bridge is made from robust, corrosion resistant materials. The compact unit has strategically-placed screw holes allowing it to be attached to any convenient surface. Two simple 5-pin universal sockets facilitate the quick and simple connection of the two network cables, and an LED indicator shows the network status.

“By connecting the Bridge into an existing system, it will allow a yacht owner to expand a yacht’s systems without having to stick with just one manufacturer,” Persoon stated. “This is just one example of the benefits of becoming part of an organization such as Actuant, where the pooling of expertise reaps huge benefits for the customer. Furthermore, the Bridge gives our OEMS a complete simple package: a networked system made up of the worlds best power conversion and digital switching products.”

“The inclusion of the Mastervolt product range and the integration highlights the BEP marine division strategy to be become a leading global supplier of integrated electrical system solutions and electrical components,” says BEP’s Jarrod Sagar.

The CZone MasterBus Bridge will be on display at IBEX and METS, and is due for release in the first quarter of 2012. The bridge will include all the necessary connector cables and have a 2-year warranty.

Lloyd´s Register new pocket guide

November 07, 2011

Lloyd’s Register, in partnership with the UK P&I Club and the crane manufacturers MacGregor and Liebherr, has published a new pocket guide, Survey and Examination of Ships’ Lifting Appliances to help yacht owners and operators understand the importance of professional maintenance and survey preparation for marine lifting appliances.

Lloyds Register

“Lifting appliances need to be thoroughly examined and it is important that operators understand the seriousness and consequences of failure, as well as what they need to do to support the safety framework,” Joanna Townsend, Fleet Services Manager for Lloyd’s Register, said. “Poor preparation before surveys is a common problem among operators. Other issues include a lack of knowledge about rocking tests, difficulties in obtaining maintenance records and problems accessing the key areas that need to be surveyed.”

“These are key safety issues,” said Townsend. “This pocket guide has been designed so that it is handy to use, inexpensive to produce and will be free to the industry. We highly recommend its use.”

The rocking test is one of the most critical survey items, used to measure the wear of the slew bearing and related structures. Its excess wear combined with bolt failure can lead to a deck crane toppling over.

The guide offers technical guidelines for inspecting a variety of lifting appliances, including deck cranes, derricks, engine room and provisions cranes, and life-saving appliance davits.

When a lifting appliance fails the consequences can be serious, including death or serious injury and the potentially significant costs that result from a disruption of operations.

“Personal injuries to crews from breaking wires or a lack of maintenance on stores and cargo cranes hit P&I Clubs the hardest because personal liability claims can be very costly,” said Karl Lumbers, the UK P&I Club’s Loss Prevention Manager. “The guide is a very good way to help address this.”

Other problems identified during research conducted for the guide included a lack of preparation for surveys, difficulty in conducting the appropriate surveys and operators not having adequate understanding of the issues.

Its compilation was strategically supported by prominent members of the marine industry.

“Liebherr are proud to have been part of the Lloyd’s Register initiative to produce this pocket guide, which we are sure will assist in the on-going safe operation of cranes under LR survey worldwide,” said Tony Copeland, Quality Manager for Liebherr.

Gunnar Tjärnstrom, Quality Assurance Manager for the crane business line at MacGregor, said: “As a crane manufacturer and servicing company, MacGregor were happy to accept Lloyd´s Register’s invitation to support the production of this pocket guide. This helps all parties to better understand each other’s demands and will therefore lead to safer operation of the equipment.”

More than 300,000 pocket guides related to marine safety have been produced and distributed by Lloyd’s Register and the UK P&I Club in the past five years.

Raymarine’s new hand-held thermal scopes

November 04, 2011

The marine electronics leader, Raymarine presents its new hand-held TH24 and TH32 Thermal Marine Scopes, which bring boaties the possibility to see safely in the dark, wherever they are on board.

Raymarine TH24 Thermal Marine Scopes

Raymarine TH24 Thermal Marine Scopes

The new Raymarine TH24 and TH32 Thermal Marine Scopes use the same proven thermal imaging technology as Raymarine’s premium T Series fixed mount cameras. However, they are smaller, portable and more affordable and can be used anywhere from the bow to the stern or even taken onto a tender or PWC.

“This makes then an incredible safety aid,” says Cameron Burch, Raymarine product manager at New Zealand distributor Lusty and Blundell Ltd. “Because these thermal scopes use heat rather than light to ‘see’, they can pick out rocks, buoys, floating debris and other hazards, even in complete darkness.

“More importantly, they can quickly help find someone in the water, a real bonus when just a few minutes can make the difference between life and death.”

The new Raymarine thermal scopes are very easy to use and weigh just 340 grams. However, they are also very rugged and waterproof to IP-67 standard and come with a choice of resolution: 240×180 or 320×240.

The TH24 also has a freeze frame feature, while there is a two-times digital zoom on the TH32.

Raymarine’s new thermal scopes are available nationwide through Lusty and Blundell’s network of leading marine dealers.

RYA encourages to get involved with Government’s Red Tape Challenge-Maritime

November 04, 2011

The RYA is inviting everbody to get involved with the Government’s Red Tape Challenge as it moves onto the maritime sector on 10 November 2011 for five weeks. The aim of the challenge is to help free discussion of the steps by which the goals of existing regulation can be achieved in the least disturbing way possible.

RYA logo

With the focus now on the maritime sector the Department for Transport wants to gather thoughts and ideas from those who deal with regulations on a day-to-day basis on which regulations should stay, which could be merged, which can be scrapped and so on.

Gus Lewis RYA Head of Government Affairs: “This is a great opportunity for us all, from clubs and training centres, to volunteers and boaters and the RYA to let Government know what we think about existing regulation and its impact upon our activities.”

“As a preliminary to the Red Tape Challenge opening publicly the RYA met informally with the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Department for Transport to discuss the process and to enable us to identify where the RYA’s intervention might be most effective.”

“The RYA believes that any legislation or regulation should be transparent, accountable, proportionate and consistent and only targeted at cases where sound risk and evidence analysis demonstrates that such action is needed.”

“This process gives us a unique opportunity to challenge those regulations that do not satisfy these criteria and in doing so to set a benchmark against which future legislative proposals might be measured” concludes Gus.

At the end of the five weeks Ministers will have three months to decide what action they will take in light of the experience and ideas they have received from the sector.

The Government’s Red Tape Challenge, which will be conducted across all departments and sectors, started in April 2011 and will run until April 2013.
