New Baltic 108 Yacht WINWIN with interior design by Design Unlimited

April 12, 2013

Design Unlimited has unveiled initial details of the interior design as well as specification for the Baltic 108 sailing yacht WinWin. The beautiful WinWin yacht is a 108ft (33m) composite sailboat, scheduled for completion at Baltic Yachts in early 2014.

With naval architecture by Javier Jaudenes, superyacht WinWin is a high performance cruiser / racer intended to excel at both. The owner of WinWin is an experienced long distance sailor who knows exactly what he wants from the yacht. Notable features include a lifting keel and a retracting glass bulkhead between the deck saloon and cockpit which allows seamless integration between both spaces. Performance is also a key priority, with Mark Tucker and his team at Design Unlimited tasked with keeping overall weight to a minimum.

As the leading interior design studio for yachts of this type, with the WallyCento sailing yacht Hamilton and the refit of the 30.5m charter yacht Leopard 3 two notable projects with a similar brief completed in 2012, Design Unlimited understood the need for an interior that was essentially minimalist yet still with all the comforts required for family cruising.

In response to the owners’ wishes the forward section is mostly taken up by an exceptionally generous master suite comprised of a large, full width cabin with en-suite shower room, and a study and owners’ lounge stretching down the port side complete with desk, three sided settee and ample storage. Facing that across the centreline is a Pullman cabin for the owners to use when passage-making, demonstrating that this yacht is intended for serious sailing.

The deck saloon of WinWin yacht is a well-proportioned seating and entertaining area with plenty of light, not least as a result of the retracting glass bulkhead that leads out to the cockpit to create a single, dramatic, unified space. Other features of the saloon include a daybed aft on the starboard side and side windows that can be opened.

The aft section of the Baltic 108 superyacht WinWin includes two twin guest cabins each with en-suite, plus a fully-equipped galley, crew mess with navigation station, and two Pullman cabins providing high-quality accommodation for up to four crew.

In keeping with the brief for a light, minimalist finish, the interior uses washed and limed oak veneers for the floors and interior joinery, while lacquered overheads aid in reflecting light throughout. Concealed light panels help maintain the atmosphere of clean simplicity.

Loro Piana, the Italian fabric house long associated with the world of sailing, supplied the fabrics used in the interior, while the linings came from Majilite. The leather upholstery and headboards were supplied by Edelman, and the fittings are by Dornbracht, Hansgrohe and Turnstyle.

“WinWin is an uncompromising cruiser/racer designed for owners who intend to spend many hours on board,” said Design Unlimited’s Mark Tucker. “It has been a pleasure to work with owners who have a clear vision of what they wish to achieve and we believe the result is a yacht that is perfect for extended, long-distance cruising as well as exciting racing. We look forward to seeing her afloat.”

Rolex Fastnet Race 2013 to host record number of 380 yachts

April 12, 2013

The Rolex Fastnet Race represents one of sailing’s greatest contests. The 45th edition of Europe’s oldest offshore race will take place in August, with a gripping and punishing 608-nautical mile journey from Cowes, Isle of Wight to Plymouth via the Fastnet Rock, off the southern tip of Ireland. An amazing and record number of 380 yachts is expected to participate in the biennial race this year.

In response to the immense demand and popularity of the event, the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) increased the limit for this year’s fleet after the entry list was filled within 24 hours of opening. Over twenty countries and territories from five continents will be represented, with crews comprising both fully professional and amateur.

The Rolex Fastnet is a genuine rite of passage for any sailor. Conditions can be harsh and are always changeable. The race is as notoriously difficult to finish, as it is to win. The competition is democratic: the handicap system applied to the main body of the fleet means the overall winner can spring from any size of yacht. Niklas Zennström’s 21.94m/72-foot British Mini Maxi sailing yacht Rán 2 is the defending champion and is seeking to make history by becoming the first boat to win the race three times in a row: an achievement that would border on the miraculous.

Current race record holder, the Volvo Open 70 yacht Abu Dhabi from the United Arab Emirates, skippered by Ian Walker, will set out to defend her line honours title and to better the benchmark monohull time of 42 hours, 39 minutes she set in 2011. Abu Dhabi will be wary of her competition. Igor Simcic’s 30.48m/100-ft pan-European Maxi superyacht Esimit Europa 2, the undisputed fastest boat in the Mediterranean, is taking part for the first time. Mike Slade’s primarily British crewed 100-ft Maxi charter yacht ICAP Leopard, twice the event’s fastest finisher (2007, 2009), will be tough to beat given the right mix of conditions.

Rolex has sponsored the Rolex Fastnet Race since 2001 and recently extended its commitment until 2021. A dedicated Press Kit – available in various languages – explores the history of the event and previews the 2013 edition. A glimpse into the event’s iconic appeal is provided by an accompanying photo story.

The race start from the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes is scheduled for Sunday 11 August, with the first warning signal at 10:50 BST.

Michelin Star chefs finding superyacht work through search engine of Yachting Pages

April 10, 2013

The superyachts can now access the world’s elusive elite chefs, thanks to the London agency, that is advertising the services of its Michelin Star ‘chefs-for-hire’ via leading superyacht search engine of Yachting Pages.

John Bowman-Baker is managing director of Gladstone Park Chefs. He says, “Superyachts present unique opportunities for talented chefs. We at Gladstone are uniquely positioned to place our Michelin Star chefs and sous-chefs aboard them.

“Why? Due to our position in London’s top-end restaurant trade, we have developed unparalleled access to chefs working at hotels and restaurants with anything from 2 AA Rosettes up to several Michelin Stars.”

John continued, “We are not specialist crew recruiters, and do not advertise ourselves thus. But we are most definitely specialist chef recruiters. Ultimately, it’s easier for a Michelin Star chef to adapt to life aboard than it is for a galley cook to acquire a Michelin star!”

Kerry O’Neill is marketing executive with Yachting Pages. She said, “John contacted us when a fourth superyacht in as many weeks contacted him concerning the fantastic, highly qualified chefs on his books. He spotted a niche, and jumped right in.”

John added, “My business partner, Roderick Henderson, set up the first chef desk at Berkeley Scott – the hotels, hospitality and recruitment specialists. Between us we have decades of experience in our field and remain passionate about what we do, our chefs, and their food.

“We’ve both worked with many high-profile executive chefs, which brings many interesting individuals our way. We then help these talented chefs create gourmet dining experiences for superyacht owners and charter guests around the world…and I think that Yachting Pages’s website is going to help us do this on an international stage. I just hope we can satisfy market growth.”

John commented, “The standard of CVs we’re seeing for yacht placements is astounding. It’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Most were referred by other Michelin-starred chefs, who know that their sous-chef, or fellow Michelin Star head chefs are looking to move on. We know for sure that other agencies used by these yachts are failing to find the right calibre of applicants.”

According to Berkeley Scott’s 2013 salary survey, a head chef in a London restaurant can expect to earn up to GBP £50,000pa. While declining to comment on the earning potential for Michelin Star chefs aboard superyachts, John intimated that the rewards were “more than satisfactory”.

During a two-day visit to the South West, Dr Cable confirmed that Princess Yachts could start drawing down its £4.6 million grant to help the company invest over £35 million in a new superyacht hall. This investment has already created 290 jobs and helped safeguard 400.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “Growing businesses like Princess Yachts that are creating high tech, and highly skilled jobs are precisely the sort of companies that the government wants to support.

“Through the Regional Growth Fund, and more widely through our long term industrial strategy, government can give business the clarity and confidence to invest for the long term. That creates growth, and jobs for people here in the South West and all across the country.”

Vince Cable has been leading development of the government’s industrial strategy which looks to the future and presents a long-term, whole of government approach to supporting British business, giving them the confidence they need to invest, hire staff and grow.

Ed Dubois aboard Oyster 125 Yacht TWILIGHT during her sea trials

April 09, 2013

The breathtaking 38-metre sailing yacht Twilight represents the first of the Oyster 125 by Dubois range and the latest Dubois design, successfully launched earlier this year. Ed Dubois had the opportunity to step aboard the Oyster 125 yacht Twilight during her sea trials in mid-March.

Ed Dubois said: “Twilight meets the brief exactly for a flybridge yacht that performs well and looks great. She has a layout which offers far more space than one would expect from a yacht of her size – the generous beam allows for excellent accommodation both for guests staterooms and crew cabins. This particular design works brilliantly in terms of the feel on board and the outboard appearance.

The experienced Oyster team, in collaboration with RMK, has produced a first class yacht with a great quality of construction and finish. She is a true superyacht and will have immediate appeal to the market. She is a thoroughly desirable craft in all aspects.”
