American superyacht industry get together to discuss the state of the market

May 03, 2013

May 14th in Nevada will see the key players of the American superyacht industry meet to talk about the current state of the market.

Todd Beechey

Todd Beechey

The American Superyacht Forum has proved a hotbed of industry activity in previous years and this year, it’s set to do so again. A major talking point of the forum will be ongoing positive momentum as the industry continues to regain an even keel and maintain its balance in the wake of the GFC.

One of the key factors to that balance is opening up new avenues of revenue for the industry. Todd Beechey, president of OceanScape Yachts, will sit on a panel at the Forum which will discuss how to do that.

“The industry often has a slanted focus toward the UHNWI. To us, there is a big market that’s being forgotten about. The people who can and do take beautiful vacations each year, and who can afford to take those vacations onboard a yacht, but have not yet been reached by the industry.”

One of the things Beechey thinks needs to change, for this market to become a realistic option, is an earning model that benefits everyone in the industry, not just those involved in the very biggest of yachts. When every thing from the broker’s fee, to the crew’s tips is based on percentage, what incentive is there for industry members to focus on developing the smaller end of the market? And that’s exactly where he believes industry growth will be driven from – the bottom, up.

“Does a four person crew on a $100,000 a week charter yacht work harder than a four person crew on a $50,000? Perhaps not. So why should they earn so much more in tips?”  Asks Beechey.

So how does the industry draw in this new market and start driving that smaller end, high volume growth? It’s a topic that Beechey is passionate about and one which he’ll discuss in depth at the Forum. A new form of marketing is one – working through new channels to find a different customer base – and making the industry a little more approachable, more accessible and less intimidating to the new customer is another. Ways of implementing both of which will be discussed at the forum.

Todd Beechey would welcome discussions on this topic and invites anyone interested to contact him prior to, or at the forum to talk about this new demographic to the superyacht industry.

American Superyacht Forum 2013: Programme and Speakers

April 19, 2013

Opening the Forum this year will be Shipyard CEOs, Presidents and Directors discussing the lack of movement in the American market in Session One’s “Plotting a New Course for Yachting”. Using the session as a platform to air their grievances, voice their concerns and share their plans for getting America excited about yachting again, our panelists will offer a critical and inspirational start to the Forum.

Speakers for this powerful session include Billy Smith III of Trinity Yachts, James Fwu of Horizon Group, Carlos Vidueira from Rybovich, Jeffery Ferguson of Ocean Alexander USA, Todd Roberts of Marine Group Boat Works, and Guillaume Roche from Sunrise Yachts. This mixed panelwill be able to provide insight from both those within the US market, and those acting as outsiders as to what America can do better.

Luiz De Basto of De Basto Designs

In Session Five’s “Report from the Front Lines”, Captains and Project Managers will be given the opportunity to offer candid opinions on doing business with the USA. Following the great success of the Superyacht Captains’ Forum earlier this month in Viareggio, Captains shared strong opinions on why they choose not to or choose to do business with Italy. This session aims to achieve the same outcome with Captains discussing their current opinions of America. Captain David Clarke of mega yacht Laurel, Mike Hein of motor yacht Mea Culpa, and Teddy Garsva of M/Y Freddy have already signed on to speak up about what needs to change for the future.

Closing Day One of the Forum this year are a selection of innovative and pioneering designers to share their views on why the American design world is lagging so far behind the rest of the world. Luiz De Basto of De Basto Designs, Bill Blount of Donald L. Blount & Associates, and Greg Marshall of Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architect Ltd. will take to the stage for Session Six’s “The Future of Design & Technology in America”.

With reports from the USSA, ISS, and a session on drawing in new blood in for the future, day one offers back to back powerful sessions to wake up America and make plans to change the future. Day two will see delegates taking morecontrol in the sessions they sit in on, which speakers they want to hear from, and what topics are most important to them with a choice of different breakout rooms available.

Yacht Makers heading to Sanya for Hainan Rendez-Vous 2013

March 26, 2013

Boats as well as CEOs from shipyards across the world are coming to the next 2013 edition of Hainan Rendez-Vous, the yacht show that attracts thousands of China’s top business elites to the fabulous shores of Sanya each year. Set to run from March 30th to April 2nd, this year’s Rendez-Vous will delight visitors with an amazing fleet of spectacular ships, among them seven superyachts in the 30-50-metre range. Futhermore, the rich program of social events at the event is sure to keep networking as well as celebrations running at high intensity throughout the four-day show.

Almost all yacht brands that exhibited at last year’s Hainan Rendez-Vous will be exhibiting at the 2013 edition, many of them occupying additional berths and larger exhibition booths. Returning visitors will recognize familiar faces from Lürssen, Feadship, Heesen Yachts, Blohm+Voss, Royal Huisman, Trinity, Oceanco, Brunswick, Jeanneau, Beneteau Group, AzimutBenetti, Kingship, Sanlorenzo, Marquis, Sunseeker China, Princess Yachts, Sunbird, Heysea and others.

Due to the strong demand from these returning shipyards, several yacht builders who were hoping to exhibit at Hainan Rendez-Vous 2013 unfortunately were unable to reserve a space. New names that did manage to secure exhibition booths for this year’s show include German megayacht builder Abeking & Rasmussen, and the Italian shipyards Tecnomar and Filippetti.

The 130-boat fleet at Hainan Rendez-Vous 2013 will fill the show marina to maximum capacity, and will include the following majestic superyachts:
- 50-metre aluminum tri-deck motor yacht Sapphire, built by US shipyard Trinity
- 42-metre yacht Star by Taiwanese shipyard Kingship that, with her blue-hull and classic design, held crowds enchanted at last year’s Rendez-Vous
- 45-metre superyacht Blue Sky from Feadship; fitted with a helicopter pad and mahjong room, this boat became the first European-built superyacht sold to a mainland China buyer, the sale taking place at last year’s Hainan Rendez-Vous
- 34-metre luxury yacht Aycer 34 by Dubai shipyard Sayer Yachts
- 32-metre fibreglass yacht Next by Custom Line, a division of Chinese-Italian shipyard Ferretti
- 28-metre superyacht Nica II by Benetti

The thrill of catamarans sailing will also be on full display at Hainan Rendez-Vous 2013. Outstanding cats at the boat show will include the 70 Feng yacht, a 21-metre vessel with stunning Asian-inspired design by Sunreef, and the Leopard 44, named by Cruising World as the Best Import Boat and Best Multi-Hull Boat of 2012.

Underscoring the growing importance of Hainan Rendez-Vous in the global yacht show circuit, the yacht brands Marquis, Azimut, Beneteau and Jeanneau as well as Leopard Catamaran will all be unveiling new vessels for either the Asian or world market at the show.

Show organisers say that yacht exhibitors are working harder this year to win the favor of China’s wealthy elites by organising more parties and special events. Business jet and lifestyle exhibitors at Hainan Rendez-Vous will also be holding several events onboard the big ships of the yacht show.

Sea trials will be taking prospective yacht buyers out over the waters continuously, with at least ten yacht brands offering test cruises this year.

Other attractions for show guests will include, of course, the Hainan Rendez-Vous Supercar Showcase, this year headlined by the new McLaren P1. The Hainan Rendez-Vous 2013 Lifestyle Collection will include a Chopard ring with rare 31.32-carat chameleon diamond, among other beautiful objects on display.

This year’s Art in Hainan exhibition will explore the concept of the garden through the works of several distinguished contemporary artists. Gala dinners, cocktail hours, seminars, wine and caviar tastings, after-dark parties and other events will provide further opportunities for guest to enjoy their time with one another, experience lifestyle brands and interact with show exhibitors and sponsors.

“We’re doing everything we can to make this year’s Hainan Rendez-Vous the most successful edition yet for our sponsors and exhibitors,” says Diana Jaquier, Managing Director of China Rendez-Vous Ltd. “We invested more in the domestic marketing campaign for this year, and significant numbers of new VIP guests will be coming as a result. Thanks to our partners, we have a superb show waiting for them.”

Delphine Lignieres, show founder and CEO of China Rendez-Vous Ltd, added: “We are profoundly grateful for the continued loyal support of our sponsors and exhibitors. We’re now completely focused on making this event smooth and successful for them.”

Trinity Yachts signs contract for new 59m motor yacht Hull T-062

February 28, 2013

The prestigious US shipyard, Trinity Yachts, is delighted to announce that long-time Trinity clients have embarked on their next Trinity, the 193′ (59m) motor yacht Hull T-062. Scheduled for delivery in 2015, the impressive Trinity superyacht Hull T-062 is a beautiful tri-deck custom built aluminium vessel, boasting a generous 33,5’ (10,2m) beam.

Luxury yacht Hull T-062 will be built in Trinity’s New Orleans, Louisiana shipyard by the same experts that have built this repeat owner’s previous yachts. Trinity’s entire staff and shipyard tradesmen are looking forward to starting this new project and appreciate the expertise the owner’s experienced team brings to the project.

The new Hull T-062 yacht will have a total of six staterooms for the owner and guests as well as a spa with a full bath below decks. Although the yacht will not charter, she will be ABS classed and MCA compliant for yachts over 500 IGT.

The new Trinity superyacht Hull T-062 is significantly larger than their previous Trinity yachts while still meeting the owner’s requirements to be able to still cruise their favorite spots in the Bahamas and also have a good turn of speed when necessary. With 8’ (2.4m) of draft in normal operation and a top speed of more than 19 knots, the operating parameters to meet the client’s cruising expectations are satisfied.

The Hull T-062 yacht’s striking exterior styling is being executed by Geoff van Aller, Trinity’s in house naval architect with significant input from the clients. The interior design will be created by the same designer that produced their previous yacht’s world-acclaimed interior design.

Crew comfort, privacy and accessibility have also been taken into consideration during the design process. With four crew cabins below deck forward, two cabins below deck aft, and the captain’s cabin aft of the pilothouse, the crew will find the new Trinity Hull T-062 yacht exceptionally spacious and comfortable. There are also separate crew companionways to all decks, enabling the crew to service all areas of the yacht efficiently without disruption to the owner and guests.

Exterior areas of the Hull T-062 superyacht are designed to be comfortable and versatile as is evident by the layout. The aft main deck has air conditioning over the raised seating area and the sundeck has full height sliding glass doors to block the wind when necessary.

A diesel powered Novurania—capable of carrying the entire owner’s party ashore—will be housed in a garage located in the stern of the 59m motor yacht Hull T-062. The garage door will fold down and the entire area will double as a “beach club” when the tender is deployed.

All the employees at Trinity Yachts are proud to have been selected to build another yacht for this family.
