I3D – Lighting design studio for luxury super yachts

January 02, 2012

At the beginning of December, 2011 we have posted an article about an interdisciplinary design consulting firm I3D Inc. (In3Design), which specialises in lighting design for luxury yachts. Designers focus on the unique identity and atmosphere of the given space, how it communicates with people, and how it changes to suit their needs. While almost every other detail is customized on yachts, lighting is frequently ignored. When the sun sets and the lights are turned on, one discovers the most generic illumination, often provided by outdated lighting technologies.

On most modern yachts, very little stands out at nighttime. They are undefined masses looking like ‘black-holes’ from shore when moored in a bay. The hours that exterior stylists spend on creating signature shapes disappear into darkness and are not represented at all. Private residences and restaurants often have more unique lighting than multi-million dollar yachts.

Emotional and unique approaches to yacht lighting create subtle moods and add both pleasure and value to a yacht by reflecting an owner’s personality. These lighting techniques put a signature stamp on form and function, adding sophistication to luxury. I3D sees the untapped potential for stunning new lighting designs for luxury yachts.

Beatrice Witzgall’s passion for performance sailing, combined with her lighting expertise, allows her to understand the opportunities that lie beyond the traditional lighting approaches. This combination leads to a deeper understanding of the practical challenges and requirements of yachts as far as realizing their design potential and opportunities.

At this point, I3D has worked on numerous yachts ranging from some of the most high-profile and prominent superyacht launches to high performance catamarans. I3D involvement ranges from full lighting design services, to technical consultancies, to support in architectural design aspects and development of graphics. I3D has worked extensively with many acclaimed designers such as Bannenberg-Rowell, Reymond Langton, German Frers and shipyards such as Luerssen, Abeking & Rasmussen, Nobiskrug, Hodgdens and Gunboat.

LIGHTING STATEMENT:

For PACIFIC, the owner’s brief was clear: “impress & surprise us showing something that hasn’t been done before on any yacht.” Therefore, I3D had the amazing opportunity to implement many of our unique design visions into this outstanding project. All spaces were defined by different light settings for the various user scenarios. Integrated lighting accentuated the multitude of complex materials and textures; and the complex and outstanding architectural design details. A mood-altering color scheme linked interior with exterior spaces and created a fluent spatial experience. Together, these and other innovative lighting features created PACIFIC’s unique signature look, pushing the envelope for innovative lighting design and setting a new industry standard.

Delivery: October 2010

Shipyard: Gunboat, South Africa

Architectural Layout / Graphic / Lighting: I3D, inc.

Client: Lloyd Thornburg

Awards: 2011 Best Boats: Flagship Multihull

This catamaran truly pushed the envelope and redefined what a fully equipped “performance cruising boat” nowadays can mean. Not only did it apply race boat technology, pushing weight

and performance to the limit without compromising or sacrificing luxury life-style elements in a highly designed loft-type space, but it also rethought every system, detail, and technological

addition. The result is a custom, modern, cleanly-designed, stylish and open penthouse space that has every feature of a fast, light-weight performance racing yacht. This 66’ Gunboat catamaran is equal in many aspects to an over 100’ Super Yacht in terms of space, speed, performance, and quality of finishes. However, it is optimized in terms of crew, maintenance costs, fuel, and energy savings. It sets new standards for catamarans, bringing the possibilities to a new level. This project represents I3D as truly an interdisciplinary firm with scope ranging from architectural layout to the styling and branding including graphics and the lighting design.

YACHTS – other design services: architectural design & GRAPHICS

• architectural design

I3D – In3Design are a strong believer in an integrated design approach that combines backgrounds and bridges disciplines, using a comprehensive understanding of a situation in order to create

new insights and see new potentials. Relying on their strong background in architecture, they created for PHAEDO an open loft-style modern space for this usually cluttered platform yacht. I3D focused on creating clean lines, alignments, and a continuity of space that connects the inside to the outside in order to create a seamless spatial experience.

• BOAT GRAPHICS & LOGOS

With I3D’s strong understanding of the various design disciplines, they understand the underlying design principles, concepts and themes enabling them to develop a representative brand. The graphics should strengthen and accentuates the identity and have a unique, but specific character. Graphics should reflect the overall design principles of the project.

78m Yacht C2 by Abeking & Rasmussen

December 16, 2011

Today’s feature on CharterWorld News concentrates on the stunning  Abeking & Rasmussen 78m C2 yacht (ex Ann, Project Blue Sky). There is very little known about this beautiful vessel, however her beauty, excellent German craftsmanship, combined with the mysteriousness surrounding this vessel, make her ever so interesting and desirable. Abeking & Rasmussen’s motor yacht C2 was designed by Reymond Langton Design with her interior presumed to be by the Owner’s personal designer, who remains undisclosed. C2 yacht’s close sister-ships, with equally majestic 78 metres include the superyacht Eminence (ex Project Excellence IV), Titan and superyacht Amaryllis.

American Owners have decided to keep their beautiful vessel private and have prohibited the yard and the yacht’s designers from communicating any information whatsoever to the public. A&R mega yacht C2 is registered in The Creek and she was launched in 2009 by the prestigious shipyard in Germany under the hull number 6479.

A&R displacement motor yacht C2 is the 2nd vessel from the 78m series and features a deep-blue steel hull in combination with a white aluminium superstructure. With the exact overall length of 78.43m (257’32”) she features an impressive beam of 12.40 metres (40’68”). Her maximum draft is of 3.20 metres (10’50”). C2 has been built according to the Lloyd’s Register and is MCA compliant.

Powered by twin Caterpillar 3516B DITA model diesel engines of 2,000hp (1,491KW) she is presumably reaching a maximum speed of 16 knots and can comfortably cruise at a speed of 14 knots. Her range is though to be 6,000 nautical miles. All these details indicate her great seaworthiness and great oceangoing capabilities, designed to give top performance in all conditions.

As mentioned before, one of the close sister yachts to C2 is the motor yacht Eminence, which we know more about. This information could give us some indications about possible features, layouts of her more reticent sister vessel. One of the features,  possibly found on C2 could be the enclosed elevator, which connects the four decks of the yacht Eminence. The main deck of Eminence, also offers great space for gatherings and entertainment in great style and luxury, which would indicate the same for the mega yacht C2. Great space and excellent setting for al-fresco dining can also be found on Eminence’s bridge deck.

The Amaryllis yacht has a deep blue coloured hull with a contrasting white superstructure.

The interior design of superyacht Amaryllis was achieved by Reymond Langton, the details of which are yet to be released.

The Abeking & Rasmussen motor yacht Amaryllis is able to accommodate up to 12 guests in 6 luxurious staterooms looked after by a contingent of 22 crew members.

Phoenix 2 superyacht by Lurssen at her launch

Superyacht Phoenix 2 is by no means a simple sequel to the first yacht. She has been carefully designed and constructed to ensure that the essence of the the original Phoenix has been kept; but as her new name appropriately suggests, she has been “squared” in both her complexity and size making her a much bigger and far more beautiful yacht.

The exterior of luxury yacht Phoenix 2 was designed by Andrew Winch Design and incorporates both elegant and streamlined lines that are complemented by more than 100 metres of polished stainless steel handrails uniquely shaped and installed. The imaginative use of furnishings, fabrics and furniture on the Lürssen yacht Phoenix II is influenced by the New York 1930′s era, is incorporated into her unique general arrangement which has been carefully designed to provide the clients with exactly the style and practicality of the yacht they require. A beautiful full beam Deco Duplex apartment for the owner’s suite offers unrivalled and undisturbed views out to sea. The Derecktor Built and Tim Heywood Designed Superacht Cakewalk launched in 2010

From Derecktor Yachts about the Launch of Yacht CAKEWALK:
Remember the date; August 8th 2010 was not just another summer Sunday for the United States yachting industry. Instead, at 10:30 a.m. a genuinely momentous event took place. For that moment marked the launch by Derecktor Shipyards of the 85.6 meter (281 ft) motor yacht Cakewalk, the largest yacht (by volume) ever built in the United States.

When the stunning six deck, 2998 gross ton vessel floated off Derecktor’s new 4000 ton dry-dock into the waters of Bridgeport harbour, it was the culmination of an effort never before seen in American yacht building. Several years and many, many thousands of skilled labour hours, along with tireless work from the owners’ team and Derecktor’s project group were needed to make the original vision a remarkable reality.

“Needless to say, as with any project of this scale and sophistication, there were some growing pains along the way, but we think the result speaks for herself” said an obviously pleased Paul Derecktor, President of the Derecktor group of shipyards.” For the first time, an American yard has shown it can equal or better the work of the best European yards. My brother Tom and I, along with everyone at Derecktor are very proud and we thank all the people who made this possible, in particular of course, the Owner and his team.”

Superyacht Cakewalk was designed by Tim Heywood Designs with Naval Architecture by Azure Naval Architecture. Interior design was by Dalton Designs, Inc. Literally dozens of subcontractors from engineering firms to security specialists participated in the project. “We certainly could not have done it without them” commented Gavin Higgins, VP of Business Development at Derecktor. “Some of the world’s most experienced and skilled specialists put their expertise into this job. You cannot successfully build a yacht of this size and complexity with having that sort of talent available.” Reactions from those involved in the project are a mix of pride, satisfaction and in some cases awe at what has been accomplished.

“She is superb” said Designer Tim Heywood. “The workmanship throughout is absolutely first-class, as good as you will find on any yacht in the world. I could not be more pleased for the owner and all involved”. Bill Zinser, Build Captain on Cakewalk yacht and leader of the owners’ team, seemed as proud (and relieved) as a new parent, “She is what we knew she could be all along. It makes all the hard work, all the long days, worth it. We have great owners and we worked with a great group at Derecktor. We can’t wait to show her off to the world.” Notably, Cakewalk was christened for the owners by Carmen Golinski, the Interior Manager on board, indicative of the closeness of the owners and crew.

85m Motor yacht PACIFIC by Lurssen in Germany

The 85m superyacht PACIFIC was launched in July by Lurssen Yachts of Germany in Vegesack. The first image of the yacht seen here was taken by the German yacht and ship photographer Martin Groothuis from Bremen at the shipyard in Vegesack.

Yacht PACIFIC displays a unique styling in her exterior design. As can be seen here, her topsides have two openings on her starboard side which are likely tender and water toy garages which will also double as swimming platforms and landing areas.

German Frers which is perhaps more traditionally associated with sailing yacht design, is the experienced design office responsible for the Pacific yacht’s individual look. The Argentinean naval architect has managed a quite traditional look which is also modern and pleasing on the eye.  M/Y Pacific has a comparatively lower centre of gravity and a squarer and perhaps more expedition look than many other superyachts of her length.

Lurssen Yachts has also launched the 124.40 metre yacht Crystal, the 87.20 metre Phoenix 2 superyacht as well as the 60 metre Solemates in 2010.

78m Yacht TITAN 2010 by Abeking & Rasmussen in Germany

On May 21 2010 CharterWorld News brought you information about the exciting new 78m Abeking & Rasmussen motor yacht launch called yacht TITAN.  Motor yacht Titan was then delivered officially to her owner in October. Ship and yacht photographer Martin Groothuis of Bremen took this first image below of the brand new luxury yacht Titan in Germany.

The 2008 yacht Eminence was the first superyacht launched in the 78 metre series, complete with a unique beige hull and the 2009 motor yacht C2, with a blue hull, was the second in Abeking & Rasmussen 78 series. All three yachts, including M/Y TITAN had their exterior styling and interior designed by Reymond Langton.

Ship and yacht photographer Martin Groothuis of Bremen took this first image below of the brand new luxury yacht Titan in Germany.

Yacht Titan has a grey hull, built from steel, with a white superstructure which was constructed in aluminium. Unlike her sister-ships luxury yacht Titan has some minor customisation in the profile look of her sundeck and radar mast areas. Titan can also be distinguished with her large doors which have been positioned on the side part of the forward full beam area. These doors are likely to be for water toy and tender side garages.

Abeking are known for designing and building very large transom hatches on their modern motor yachts as they operate two well proven tender launching systems actually developed by A&R. This allows the yacht to employ smooth launching and recovering of the ship tender even whilst under way, or when approaching a anchorage or harbour.

The 78m Motor Yacht TITAN 2010 by Abeking & Rasmussen in Germany

July 23, 2010

On May 21 2010 CharterWorld News brought you information about the exciting new 78m Abeking & Rasmussen motor yacht launch called yacht TITAN.  Superyacht Titan is the third instalment in Abeking & Rasmussen’s 78m yacht series with naval architecture by Abeking & Rasmussen.

Motor yacht Titan will be delivered officially to her owner later in the 2010 summer after further finishing and sea tests. CharterWorld will keep you updated.

May 21, 2010

Superyacht Titan has been launched on May 21 by Abeking & Rasmussen in Germany on the banks of the river Weser. Titan is the third yacht in their 78m series. With a length of 78.43m the Titan yacht is one of the largest superyachts in the world – gaining a placing about midway in the Top 100 largest yachts. Motor yacht Titan has her exterior styling created by Reymond Langton, who also designed the two other superyachts in the 78m series.

As mentioned Titan’s exterior as well as interior design was created by Reymond & Langton Design. The naval architecture was completed by A&R’s in house engineering department.  Her short specification is length overall: 257 ft (78,43 m) with a beam of 40,7 ft. (12,40 m).

Eminence - The Titan Yacht Sistership

Yacht Eminence is the first yacht launched in the Abeking & Rasmussen 78 metre series. She was an impressive luxury yacht with a unusual and unique beige hull and she was launched in 2008. Motor yacht C2 with a blue hull was launched in 2009 and the second of the Abeking & Rasmussen 78 series.

Yacht Titan, the third superyacht, was launched today and she has a grey hull, built from steel, with a white superstructure which was constructed in aluminium.

The Abeking & Rasmussen 78 m Yacht series

Yacht Titan is likely to have similar specifications to Eminence, which has two 1492 kW Caterpillar main engines which give a very respectable speed of 16.5 knots. She was also built according to Lloyds Register of Shipping and MCA standards.

More information on the Titan yacht is pending including a full specification, photos and further images.

Motor yacht Titan will be delivered officially to her owner later in the 2010 summer after further finishing and sea tests. CharterWorld will keep you updated.
