The clubhouse offers an idyllic spot for non-golfing partners to relax over a laid-back lunch or for golfers to take stock of the day’s game over a cold beer.

The Indian Ocean and Asia region – one of the most spectacular cruising grounds for superyachts

November 26, 2012

The fact that the Indian Ocean and Asia region is fast becoming one of the most spectacular cruising grounds for superyachts is well known to those who have cruised this breathtaking yacht charter destination for many years, but it is only now becoming a common knowledge.

“Recent expansions in marina facilities have provided the kind of support today’s demanding professional captains are used to and the pristine ecosystems found throughout these diverse regions are exactly what yacht owners have been missing all these years”, reports Nick Coombes.

At first sight it may seem daunting… but with the abundance of stunning cruising possibilities and the excellent shore based assistance now available, it really is a joy to cruise throughout Asia’s waterways. Working on an early September departure from the Med, a Suez Canal transit and a passage through the Red Sea will put you out into the Indian Ocean to start your journey into the pristine islands of the Maldives.

Journeying on to Sri Lanka and Langkawi, Malaysia respectively in October and November, December and January will find you in Phuket, Thailand and at the half-way point in February in Myanmar. Then it’s on to the Andaman Islands in March, Singapore in April, Koh Samui, Thailand in May, Hong Kong in June and a final stop in the Philippines in July, prior to a stunning end in Indonesia in August and option to journey further to Australia and New Zealand. Stunning Asian regions are briefly described below by Asia Pacific Superyachts region experts in planning a cruising itinerary which comprises a Superyacht year-long journey through Asian waters.

– Captain Nick Coombes

MALDIVES – SEPTEMBER
First Port of call is Malé, the Capital of the Republic of the Maldives. Arrival formalities are simple although you will need a pilot for your first entry (Port Regulations); clearance is done in an hour’s time and then you’re free to leave the Customs anchorage.

Most yachts head north approximately four miles and anchor off the resort island of Bandos. Unlike some of the other exclusive resorts, Bandos gladly welcomes yacht crews and generally several yachts will be at anchor when you arrive.

As there are no Marina facilities in the Maldives large enough for today’s Superyachts, you must rely 100% on your ship’s tenders or boats provided by the agent. Basic spares are available in Malé and Petrol/Diesel can be supplied at anchor anywhere close to Malé.

The Maldives are a nature lover’s paradise, with more than a thousand small islands, surrounded by pure white beaches, like ‘Bird Island’ and pristine reef systems, providing an unending opportunity to fish and dive/snorkel to your heart’s content.

The cruising area will depend on preferred activities and prevailing weather conditions. In all but the heaviest weather there are plenty of places to cruise. The best and busiest time is November to April and Asia Pacific Superyachts Maldives’ Mohamed Hameed and his team are very helpful in assisting with cruising plans and can provide excellent dive and fishing guides. As well, Mohamed notes, a little planning will help you avoid having to ship lots of supplies into the Maldives.

SRI LANKA – OCTOBER
A very short 450NM passage from the Maldives takes you up to Sri Lanka – a good option for a fueling point. The islands eighteen million strong population provides an intoxicating mix of cultures and diverse ethnic groups. There are three main ports in Sri Lanka – namely Colombo, Galle and Trincomalee. Colombo and Galle both are manmade while Trincomalee is one of the world’s largest natural harbors; all have deepwater berths for Superyacht use.

MALAYSIA – NOVEMBER
Captain Nick Coombes of Asia Pacific Superyachts Malaysia, reports: “My first stop east of the Sri Lanka is always Langkawi. This group of 99 Islands is the perfect place to re-supply and relax. As the region’s only ‘Duty Free’ port, you will find cheap, low sulphur diesel, as well as petrol, A1 jet fuel, alcohol (including fine wines) and tobacco products. Two Superyacht marinas provide safe berthing, with a varied supply of support services available in the main town of Kuah.”

There is a custom built Superyacht refit center, with a 500 ton travel lift, 2 x 60 meter work sheds and plenty of hard stand. For larger yachts the shipyard offers a 100 meter floating dock for short or extended visits. For the crew there are plenty of beaches, restaurants, bars, 5-star hotels, golf courses, uninhabited islands and an international airport.

Cruising around Langkawi’s 99 islands will provide guests with plenty to do and allow easy access to the southern Thai islands in the Butang Group. Nick suggests the best time to visit is September through May.

PHUKET, THAILAND – DECEMBER & JANUARY
Just a few hours North of Langkawi you will find the very popular Island of Phuket. Dubbed the ‘Monaco’ of South East Asia, Phuket now has two Superyacht marinas and more are being planned.

The locals are very friendly and there is a substantial ex-pat population on the island. For off duty crew the nightlife in Patong and Phuket City is spectacular with plenty of 5-star restaurants and wine bars along with a great mix of local restaurants. Lots of high end beach clubs are being set up, giving owners a choice of secluded bays or exclusive nightlife.

Experienced Asia Pacific Superyachts Phuket’s Gordon Fernandes can recommend the best in yacht planning, noting, “Starting out and staying close to Phuket you have Phang Nga Bay with its limestone monoliths rising up out of the sea or further south, the islands of Koh Phi Phi, made famous by the film, The Beach.

Word class diving is within easy reach and guests can beach, swim, snorkel, look for monkeys and wildlife before heading off to the Similan Islands; 60NM’s North West of Phuket and classed as one of the ‘top ten global dive destinations’ – a paradise for diving and snorkeling and often guests will enjoy 30M+ water visibility.

For a more private diving experience, head a little further north to the Surin Islands and the Surin Archipelago, a 135 square kilometers area lying in the Andaman Sea some 53 kilometers off mainland Ranong Province (the park’s five islands lie just south of the border with Myanmar). Gordon suggests a brief return to Phuket for refueling/ re-provisioning before heading off for Myanmar.

Yachts planning to be in Phuket for Christmas can also join the exclusive Asia Superyacht Rendezvous, with principal sponsor, Feadship. It’s an event aimed at both motor and sailing yachts and a great way to start the festive season.

MYANMAR – FEBRUARY
Traveling further North is Myanmar and the Mergui Archipelago, partly famed as the home of small groups of ‘Moken’ (sea gypsy) villages. The Archipelago is lightly populated and it’s easy to find perfect places to relax and enjoy the solitude and beauty. The Mergui Archipelago and the Andaman Islands are among the world’s top preferred diving destinations.

ANDAMAN ISLANDS – MARCH
Moving from the Mergui Archipelagoes, you will soon encounter the vast spread of the Andaman Islands in India. The journey offers stunning cruising vistas as well as land attractions and discoveries. Visitors will find deserted islands of pure white sparkling beaches and crystal clear water. Moving inland, lush vegetation and towering cliffs with unusual bird and flora/fauna all wait to be explored and active volcanoes can be viewed during the journey.

The Andaman Islands of India delivers adventuresome cruising and vessels seek out Asia Pacific Superyachts Andamans’, R. Rathnam, to create an itinerary that opens onto a secret world of tropical jungles and serene beaches scattered throughout much of the Andaman Archipelago.

Traveling on, some of the most enticing of unexplored waters can be found in the Bay of Bengal, with deep seas and hundreds of hidden bays teaming with marine life.

Mr. Rathnam notes the best cruising months for the Andaman Islands are between November to April.

SINGAPORE – APRIL
Heading back south along the Malay Peninsular you will arrive at the island city of Singapore. This is one of the financial shining stars of South East Asia, and offers all the trappings of a modern city, all packaged together on a tropical Island.

Singapore is one of the busiest ports in the world and as such requires some pre arrival formalities and pilotage services for any vessel over GRT300… comments Asia Pacific Superyachts Singapore head, Captain Scott Walker. Scott and his team can easily handle all requests and will ensure your stay is very enjoyable, noting: “As you can imagine, a port as busy as this also has an extensive choice of shore support facilities and pretty much all major repairs can be completed locally.”

KOH SAMUI, THAILAND – MAY
Koh Samui is a lovely sand-kissed Island, offering opportunities to enjoy some of Eastern Thailand’s legendary hospitality and some very good diving, reports Captain Charlie Dwyer of the 36m Yanneke Too – heading up Asia Pacific Superyachts Samui.

Koh Samui is the ‘Jewel of the Gulf of Thailand’ – filled with natural beauty and many options for anchoring along the coast along with many attractions both on Koh Samui and the surrounding Islands. The island offers Elephant Trekking, Snake Shows, Monkey Shows, Temples, Waterfalls Thai Cultural Dancing and a Mountain Safari Trip. The island is also home to some of the finest restaurants and spas in Thailand.

Of special interest and just 20 NM from Koh Samui, is the Angthong National Marine Park with its spectacular group of 42 uniquely different and exciting islands. A mere 7 NM from Samui is the tropical Island of Koh Phangan, famed for its natural beauty and world-famous ‘Full Moon Party’. To the north is Koh Tao, famed as the ‘Diving Mecca of the Gulf’.

Koh Samui is used as a base for discovering the many beautiful islands located in the turquoise seas of the gulf with names like Koh Chang and Koh Samet. From Samui it’s possible to sail on to Pattaya and to Bangkok – the cultural capital of Thailand. The best months to visit are May through September.

HONG KONG – JUNE
Hong Kong, at the mouth of the Pearl River delta, part of China yet so different. When you think of Hong Kong, a busy commercial port and a high rise skyline pops into your mind of one of the most exciting cities in Asia, where east meets west. Though Hong Kong does ‘urban’ well, surprising to visiting yachts are the beautiful seascapes and the fact that almost 60% of Hong Kong’s landmass is still Country Park.

Hong Kong’s 236 islands studded with beaches provide unexpected stunning cruising offsetting the fast pace of life in the world’s third financial centre. Business combined with entertaining on board is normal practice in Hong Kong.

The shear proximity of museums, fine dining, tourist attractions and shopping plus some world famous international sports events make a stop in Hong Kong a unique destination.

The occasional typhoon may occur between June-September; however, Hong Kong waters are mainly protected. Outside the harbor, you can anchor almost anywhere hassle free or dock at Gold Coast Yacht & Country Club where Asia Pacific Superyachts Hong Kong’s Bart Kimman and his team can arrange typhoon proof berths for Superyachts and any other services required.

The marine department facilitates guaranteed corruption free port clearance facilities and it’s a free port, making it easy to obtain spare parts. There are excellent shipyard facilities and repair of most brands of marine equipment can be arranged for with an agent contact. The APS Hong Kong team has the ‘can do’ attitude to make life for the visiting yacht easy and exciting and most crews love to stay in Hong Kong.

HONG KONG Harbour

THE PHILIPPINES – JULY
Most yachts stay around the brilliant scenery and prime anchorages of the Puerto Galera and northern Mindoro areas. You can make day trips and overnight stays to the white beaches of Mindoro and Maricaban Islands. There are great bars and restaurants along the commercial side of the island and end the holiday with a sail back to Manila Yacht Club, taking about 15 hours with plenty of beaches to anchor.

BORNEO – AUGUST

Heading South from the Philippines, you will find the Island of Borneo with the best cruising to be found in the state of Sabah”, explains Alvin Teh, heading up the Asia Pacific Superyachts Borneo team.  Sabah’s cruising waters from Labuan to Sipadan offer spectacular and beautiful waters, islands and mainland attractions.

Tropical islands and mainland coastal bays offer extraordinarily diverse mainland beauty which includes the highest mountain in South East Asia, Mt. Kinabalu; virgin rainforest conservation areas (including the Maliau Basin, known as the ‘Lost World’); exotic wildlife and flora and fauna and a myriad of adventure and eco-tourism activities – all accessible as a day or overnight excursion from your yacht.

And for true adventure, take a river journey up the famed Kinabatangan River to see rare and endangered species including orangutans, proboscis monkeys and pigmy elephants.

INDONESIA – SEPTEMBER
As Indonesia spans the equator, she is unique in her diversity and opportunities for year round cruising.

“From November to March, the Northern sector is at its best”, explain Richard Lofthouse & Captain Jimmy Blee of Asia Pacific Superyachts Indonesia, “From Borneo it is only three to five days steaming or sailing to Bitung in North Sulawesi where you can clear in and take good quality fuel.”

From there you have ready access to Bunaken National Park, the world class muck diving of Lembeh and deserted islands to the north – all within a fifty mile radius. Moving East is the untouched Halmahera to explore and then to the ‘Mecca of Diving’ that is the Raja Ampat. Beyond that is the opportunity to discover new tribes in Indonesian Papua and spend time in a place called Fak Fak!”

INDONESIA Tribe in Papua New Guinea

In November and December a run to the Spice Islands and the beautiful Molluku area is a must – a living history of nutmeg, old forts and unique beauty.

From April to October, the 8th Parallel is ripe for exploring – whether it is Borobudur in Java, Uluwatu in Bali or the dragons of Komodo and Rinja, the possibilities are endless.

Richard notes that when factoring in that all the above makes no mention of Sumatra and Sulawesi – (two of the biggest islands in the world), Kalimantan (the Indonesian side of Borneo), Sumba (‘The land that time forgot’) or many other of the 15,000 islands Indonesia has to offer, you will see that the riches available are abundant and the exploration, endless.

Richard and Captain Jimmy have over 20 years experience exploring Indonesia and making even the most remote trip possible.

“A Year in Asia of extraordinary cruising will leave you in the perfect position to explore Northern Australia, the Great Barrier Reef and Sydney Harbour for New Year’s Eve and onwards to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands”, reports Captain Nick Coombes. An incredible discovery adventure journey awaits…

Comprehensive itineraries presenting Australia as an idyllic cruising destination for superyachts

November 08, 2012

Superyacht Australia, along with Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef Manager Susan Byrne are collaborating with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) to present comprehensive itineraries. The goal is to prove the cruising capabilities within this Great Barrier Reef region presently and by all reports what can be done is substantial and undoubtedly leaves guests raving about their experiences noting them as “totally unexpected.”

Australia's Great Barrier Reef - Lizard Island

Australia's Great Barrier Reef - Lizard Island

Captain Joe Russel a contributor in the recently released Third Edition of the Great Southern Route publication says: “I have seen the infrastructure increase in leaps and bounds and it (Cairns) is now as good as Europe.” Russel writes further about the beauties of the Great Barrier Reef stating “…suffice for me to say that after many hundreds of days cruising the area (Great Barrier Reef) over the years, I am still in awe of the reef and island cruising, deserted beaches and secluded anchorages”

The expanse of experiences while cruising in Australia include but are not limited to diving, snorkelling, all types of fishing, whale and whale shark sightings, enjoying your watercraft, cultural experiences and the best anchorages. Expect to see exquisite turquoise waters and explore the abundance of natural playgrounds when cruising Australia.

Tasmania, Australia’s southern state, boasts some of the most picturesque cruising grounds found in a temperate climate and now hosts the world renowned MONA gallery as well as exquisite natural landscapes.

The adventures and pure beauty offered in the Kimberley’s (North West Australia) leave you exploring in fresh water pools behind water falls, enjoying beautiful beaches and rock formations, walk above cascades for a swim in large billabongs, explore aboriginal art and enjoy the wildlife; Dugongs, Turtles, Sharks, Sea Eagles, Dolphins, Whales and numerous bird species.

South from the Great Barrier Reef there is a variety of safe cruising grounds, reasonable distances apart, stretching the full length of the coast. Choices vary from deep inlets, like Broken Bay just north of Sydney, to wide estuarial layouts such as Port Stephens and Port Macquarie, and natural harbours, Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour); arguable one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks.

Coupled with these unique and stunning cruising opportunities are the infrastructure and facilities required to host the necessary requirements for superyachts including superior quality refit, repair and maintenance.

Superyacht Australia has been working with the GBRMPA with regard to the regulations around the 35m rule for some areas of the reef, while this may take some time to work through it should not be forgotten that there is an expanse of unique cruising opportunities outside of these small restricted areas which several yachts have encountered. The Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef states that “feedback from vessels is that they have found Australia to be unexpected and rewarding for their owners.”

Superyacht Australia has recently had significant presence at the Monaco Yacht Show and Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show where they were profiling Australia as a key and unique cruising destination for superyachts, many were looking to Australia for ‘new’ experiences and excited by the opportunities.

Superyacht Australia ensures the voice of the superyacht sector is heard

August 27, 2012

To provide superyachts with a possibility to cruise in the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef is the main task of Superyacht Australia.

Great Barrier Reef - one of the most fabulous yacht charter destinations in Australia

Great Barrier Reef - one of the most fabulous yacht charter destinations in Australia

Superyacht Australia CEO, MaryAnne Edwards, stated “Superyacht Australia has made huge inroads to ensuring they are acknowledged as a key stakeholder that has an interest in the Great Barrier Reef”.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Parks Authority is conducting a strategic assessment of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and the nearby coastal zone. The strategic assessment is an overall assessment of the effectiveness of management arrangements to protect the environmental values of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. The goal is to ensure the World heritage values of the Great Barrier Reef are protected while creating a long term plan for sustainable development in the region.

Superyacht Australia will have a representative at the strategic assessment workshops to ensure the voice of the superyacht sector is heard. The Great Barrier Reef continues to be a major attraction and an iconic destination for visiting superyachts. Currently Superyacht Australia is working with industry to further develop cruising itineraries for the Great Barrier Reef that meets the needs of visiting superyachts.

Superyacht Australia unhappy about GBRMPA decision

July 02, 2012

Although having requested a numerous times to review the Plan of Management on the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) agenda, Superyacht Australia have been informed that due to work pressures, this item has not made it to the table.

Superyacht Australia Chairman Barry Jenkins

Superyacht Australia Chairman Barry Jenkins

This issue has been an ongoing one for the superyacht sector, with Superyacht Australia seeking to have two amendments made.  The first amendment is to apply a consistent approach to the management of superyachts regardless of whether they are under charter or whether being operated for private use. This is similar to how other global industries, such as aviation, are managed.

Secondly, the superyacht industry seeks an amendment to the Cairns and Whitsundays Plans of Management to provide greater flexibility in access for superyacht visitation. These management arrangements originally developed in the late 1990′s and do not sufficiently consider superyacht use.

Currently there is little opportunity for superyachts in excess of 35 meters in length to provide the type of quality experience the owners and charter clientele are seeking, particularly to some of the more iconic destinations offshore from Cairns, Port Douglas and the Whitsundays.

Superyacht Australia Chairman Barry Jenkins said “the average size of a superyacht has grown over the years and the environmental performance of these vessels, in most cases, far exceeds the current operating standards of many other vessels. It is time this issue made it to the work agenda for GBRMPA.  We have however, noted the considerable effort over the years to improve cruise ship access throughout the Reef and in Plan of Management areas for example the cruise ship specific permits and cruise ship anchorages and transit corridors.”

Superyachts, as a growing industry, can provide significant economic benefit for regional economies, increase the reputation of the destination internationally, support local manufacturing and support industries, and do so with less environmental impact than cruise ships and in some cases less impact than local tourist vessel operations carrying hundreds of people.

The fallout and extended delay from this decision means less superyachts will cruise in Queensland waters as one of the key attractions for the global superyacht fleet is cruising the Great Barrier Reef and having that unique experience they see portrayed in Tourism Australia promotions.

With the new Queensland Government strategy of doubling tourism revenue by 2020, this is a huge blow and will be a real barrier to Premier Newman and Minister Jann Stuckey reaching their goal.

Mr Jenkins, Superyacht Australia Chairman said “we will not let this issue rest, we will be talking to all key stakeholders to see if there is some way we can progress this issue. While we appreciate GBRMPA has a significant work agenda we see this as a simple issue that has no downside for anyone and is certainly not an environmental threat to the Great Barrier Reef.”

Minister Stuckey stated at ASMEX, the recent superyacht conference, “Not only is the Newman Government’s DestinationQ whole-of-government focus vital to fulfil the potential of this market but there is also a need for co-operation across the three levels of government, particularly in relation to customs, immigration, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority approvals, navigation and other maritime issues.”

Superyacht Australia will definitely be seeking support from the Newman government on this issue.

Australian government reviewing regulations related to superyacht charter in Australia

June 28, 2012

Superyacht Australia has sent a submission to the government of Australia requesting an urgent review of the regulations affecting superyachts looking to charter in Australia. The current regulations are seen as a barrier to promoting growth of the Australian superyacht industry and at the moment Australia is loosing ground to other countries who have dealt with this issue.

Sydney, Australia

Sydney, Australia

The submission estimates that Australia would see a doubling of the number of superyachts coming to Australia and a subsequent doubling of revenue for the country and an increase of jobs for the sector if the current charter regulations are relaxed.  Australia is facing increased competition from other Asia Pacific countries who have understood the significant economic return the countries can get from this sector. Fiji for example as a result of relaxing their charter regulations returned over $US3million from 5 charters in 2011.

The potential is huge and this drive to open up the superyacht charter market is supported by the governments 2020 strategy focused on attracting high yield tourists looking for those high end quality products.  The superyacht sector in Australia like many in the tourism sector is poised to take advantage of the significant growth in high net worth individuals coming from the emerging markets of Asia, China & India, looking for that unique experience.

The superyacht industry to a large extent has been unaffected by the global financial crisis returning 24 billion euro to the global economy in 2010.  Australia only attracted a tiny percentage of this.  The scope is enormous when you consider a superyacht spends 10% per annum of its value in maintaining the yacht.  For example, a superyacht with a value of $50 million would spend a minimum $5 million on operational costs; maintenance, crew etc if it was cruising in Australia for 12 months.

MaryAnne Edwards, CEO of Superyacht Australia, the peak body for the superyacht industry said “The potential for Australia is enormous, if we don’t act now to address the barriers to growth our competition particularly in Tahiti, Fiji and New Zealand will be firmly established, leaving us behind. The economic return to the country and the jobs it would create is significant.  There is really no downside to this issue as the government is receiving no revenue from this charter sector currently as we are being bypassed for countries that make it easier for visiting superyachts to charter.”

The global superyacht fleet totals 4209 yachts all over 30 metres.  Relaxation of the charter regulations in Australia would have a huge flow on effect for those involved in superyacht refits, repairs and provisioning.  A superyacht that comes to charter is far more likely to then undertake key refit work while in the country.  This work is now going to our competitors.

Reports suggest that the global superyacht fleet is looking for new and exciting destinations and are tiring of the traditional cruising grounds of the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Australia is that new destination with the ability to service high end clients and provide the iconic and unique experiences being sought by superyacht owners. With the new marketing campaign driven by Tourism Australia also focusing on these high end experiences the opportunities for this charter tourism sector to increase revenue for tourism and other key sectors is huge.  Especially when you consider that for every $1 spent on Tourism there is a flow on effect of 91 cents to other parts of the economy.

Edwards said “it is a huge step forward for us that the government is looking at this issue and has passed our submission down to Treasury and Customs for review.  We see no downside for the government just positives in terms of job creation and significantly increased revenue from this sector. At a time when we are looking for export revenue, to create more jobs and look after regional areas across all states and boost tourism numbers, the response has to be positive.”

Superyacht Australia is doing considerable work to remove the barriers to growth within this sector. Other barriers include the 35 metre rule in the Great Barrier Reef, pilotage costs and the need for increased infrastructure.

Carrie Carter says Cairns has experienced a strong season for visiting superyachts given the current global economic climate. A number of new yacht visits were made by yachts over 50 metres in length. Thus far, there have been 13 first time visitors to the tropical city including the 60m motor yacht Elandess, 62m sailing yachtVertigo, 51m charter yacht Tribu, 65m super yacht Family Day and the spectacular 93m luxury yacht Mayan Queen.

20 percent expansion of the Cairns Marlin Superyacht Marina

December 22, 2011

Additional 44 berths have been added to the new G Finger and Sailfish Quay pontoon berths in the Cairns Marlin Superyacht Marina as a part of her 20 percent expansion. Almost $2 million G Finger wharf is the first project finished under the Ports North´s $23 million of capital works program.

Ports North announced late last year it would bring forward more than $20 million of capital works for the Port of Cairns in a bid to boost jobs and facilities for one of the city’s most vital transport and tourism hubs.

Its completion will bring the total number of berths at Australia’s premier marina to 261 including 12 superyacht berths, significantly adding to the city’s tourism infrastructure.

Ports North Chairman, Dr Ken Chapman said the new infrastructure injection was a critical part of Ports North’s drive to support jobs, investment and economic development in Cairns and region.

“It’s fitting that exactly 12 months ago we welcomed the first cruise ship to the new Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal and today we officially open another new facility for the Port of Cairns,” Dr Chapman said.

“The completion of this project coupled with the commencement of the major redevelopment of the foreshore is a clear demonstration of our confidence in the future of the Port, the tourism industry and the city.”

“These projects are part of the largest investment in Cairns tourism infrastructure in many years.”

“We are committed to providing world‐class marine facilities to enhance port operations and the long‐term viability of the port.”

“The new marina berths are a magnificent addition to the Marlin Marina and will boost Cairns’ reputation as the pre‐eminent gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and premier superyacht destination,” Dr Chapman said.

The marina works were undertaken by Pacific Pontoon and Pier and completed one month ahead of schedule.

The project involved the supply and installation of 44 new berths ranging in size from 15m to 22m, including multi-hull berths. The project included all fire services, access gates with security swipe passes, signage and 3 phase power pedestals with electrical head switchboard.
