New Zealand’s new Wynyard Quarter superyacht Marina full

October 13, 2011

The Wynward corner of Auckland’s newest waterfront destination is currently hosting 6 luxurious superyachts who have been attracted the New Zealand shores for the Rugby World Cup. The Silo Park Marina on Jellicoe Street, only opened on the 1st of October and its 6 superyachts berths are already full with yachts measuring between 54m-93m (177ft-305ft) gracing the marina.

Auckland harbour - Wynyard Quarter

Auckland’s Viaduct Basin in the heart of the city was developed as a superyacht marina for the America’s Cup in 2000. The Marina has 150 berths and recent developments have included a new Wynyard quarter complete with an events centre, marine service and refit companies and yards, restaurants and bars as well as the 6 new superyacht berths, 3 of which can host yachts up to 90m. There is a new bridge that links the Viaduct basin, its restaurants and bars with new Wynyard Quarter.

The new waterfront development was built not only to service the influx of tourists visiting New Zealand for the World Cup but also because of the growth in the superyacht industry in Australasia.

The 6 mega yachts currently in Auckland, enjoying the knock out stages of the Cup will either continue exploring New Zealand waters or will stay in New Zealand for refit work at local superyacht yards.

The largest of the superyachts on display in Auckland is the 92 m (302ft) motor yacht Mayan Queen IV which arrived in Auckland on September 24, providing quite a vision as she cruised through the Waitemata Harbour to its berth at Wynyard Quarter. The superyacht Mayan Queen IV was launched in 2008 by the German shipyard Blohm + Voss. M/Y Mayan Queen IV was designed by British superyacht designer Tim Heywood and is able to accommodate up to 16 guests, with a compliment of 24 crew.

Acting Waterfront Auckland chief executive Rod Marler believed the Mayan Queen IV would be in Auckland until early 2012 for maintenance and servicing work. The Mayan Queen IV yacht is one of the largest yachts to visit Auckland over the past six years and is already proving a drawcard for the area.

Superyacht Athena, measuring a 90 m 295 (ft) is the second largest superyacht currently visiting Auckland. She is one of the world’s largest private sailing yachts of the modern era and the largest all-aluminum yacht built to date. S/Y Athena was built by Royal Huisman Shipyard in the Netherlands and was launched in 2005. The ATHENA yacht is a triple masted schooner – her three masts soar 197 feet above the deck supporting 28,632 square feet of sail. She is able to accommodate up to 12 passengers with 22 crew.

The charter yacht Athena was recently refitted by Orams Marine Services and is the largest superyacht to be refitted in New Zealand to date. Orams Marine Services were the first company to bring a superyacht into New Zealand for an interior alteration and refit in 1987. Since then they have established themselves as a key player in New Zealand’s superyacht refit industry.

Schooner ATHENA provides accommodation for up to 10 guests in 5 cabins:  The lower deck is comprised of the full width master cabin with full width master bath with Jacuzzi, the Owner’s Office, walk-in wardrobe, 3 Queen sized Cabins, a Twin Cabin, the crew area and a diving platform. The 74.60m (244′ 9″) motor yacht Gin Tonic II built by Marco Yachts is also visiting the Auckland superyacht marina. There is only a small amount of information available, as yet, about the Gin Tonic II superyacht. Her exterior styling was developed by the UK design firm Michael Leach Designs with interior design by Loro Piana Interiors. Superyacht Gin Tonic II has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and is powered by twin caterpillar engines and will have a max speed of 15.5 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots.

Vertigo yacht is the first sailing yacht of her size to have an almost vertical bow which allows greater waterline length, making for a considerable improvement in speed both under sail and engine power. With modern hull lines, she was designed to be large but sensitive to sail.

The 60m (196.85ft) motor yacht Elandess is another superyacht gracing Auckland’s new superyacht marina development. The yacht has been on Auckland for around 2 weeks. M/Y Elandess was custom built in 2009 by Abeking & Rasmussen in Lemwerder (Germany). The yacht’s interior was designed by Bannenberg & Rowell Design with exterior styling by Donald Starkey.

Last but not least of the 6 superyacht berths filled is by the classic yacht Itasca which was built in 1961 as a salvage tug and converted into a luxury superyacht measuring 54m in 1980. This expedition yacht has travelled the world and perhaps has one of the most impressive lists of cruising itineraries for a luxury motor yacht. From the Bering Strait to Cape Horn to the icy world of Antarctica, this fuel efficient boat can travel 13,000 nautical miles at 11 knots before having to re-fuel.

Not only are all 6 superyacht berths in Auckland’s Wynyard quarter filled, but 80 per cent of the 49 berths for 25m-50m boats in the Viaduct Harbour are also reportedly occupied. The remaining berths are expected to be filled in time for the World Cup final.

June 02, 2011

The Quarterdeck Marina at the Bitter End Yacht Club in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) is undergoing a major re-fit.  The new facilities will be opened on 4th July, making one of the most popular boutique-style destination marinas in the Caribbean suitable for today’s larger vessels and superyachts, as well as holiday charter sailors, cruising voyagers, and deep-sea and sportfish anglers.

The new facilities will provide primary docking for up to 18 vessels, with first class on shore facilities including fuelling, provisioning and retail therapy.  Marina guests can also enjoy the barefoot elegance and quiet luxury of the Bitter End Yacht Club resort, which is one of the Caribbean’s top-10 rated destinations.

The Spa offers a range of luxurious therapies and tailor-made treatments; from exotic aromatherapy massages to wraps, manicures and pedicures, even private beach-side yoga sessions, the Spa’s offerings have quickly become popular with boating guests looking for a relaxing and refreshing experience.

According to Bitter End Yacht Club’s Owner and Managing Director, Dana Hokin, “The new installation, built from the ground up, will have wider slips, improved decking surfaces, enhanced skirting, upgraded power, and best of all a better dockage layout to accommodate a wider variety of boat sizes and shapes. We think it will be a wonderful complement to our world-class shoreside offerings.”

While the Quarterdeck docks are being completed, the L-Dock, Service Dock (for fuel & water), and Gazebo Dock all remain in service, providing an additional 10 slips for transient yachts.

40,000 on the waiting list for a French Marina Berth

May 26, 2011

The French Marina Association (the FFPP), which has completed an in-depth study into marina services in France, has revealed the results that there are currently around 41 775 applications for places in marinas on the waiting list. The study would appear to conclude once again that yachting infrastructure such as refit maintenance yards , marinas and ports cannot keep up with the increase in new yachts and the expansion and growth of the yacht industry.

Some 43.2% of these waiting are from Britain. The waiting time can vary from two years to up to nine years in the Channel on the Mediterranean coast, which is the busiest area for larger superyachts.

“We can confirm that 41 775 applications for location are not satisfied members in our 301 ports,” -  Serge Pallares the President of the French Federation of marinas (FFPP).

Meaning in French ports there is a “need is for 50 700 seats,” said Gilbert Le Corre Brest, vice president of the Federation.

“The ideal would be to provide 30 000 additional places in the five years,” said Serge Pallarès. Known projects are far off. “We estimate the increase to 9000 places in four years. “Without the concreted coast marinas. “We need to diversify supply,” continued the president.

The problem of expansion and dredging Marinas and Ports:

“Our growth potential is significant. In times of economic crisis, we cannot ignore a sector like ours, argued Serge Pallarès. Our ports have weathered the crisis. If governments take into account our needs, we are capable of creating 9,000 jobs within five years. ”

“Today, we generate one billion euros in sales and nearly 23 000 direct and indirect jobs. Among the thorny issues and urgent, that of dredging. “We cannot dismiss anything at sea, say the leaders of the Federation. Some of our ports will no longer able to accommodate large units. The hardstanding is mentioned, “but it is very expensive.” The FFPP will propose a charter of dredging to the elected officials.

IGY Newport Yacht Club & Marina USA is to undergo superyacht expansion

May 23, 2011

Continuing its effort to provide the highest level of service and convenience to their worldwide marina clientele, IGY has announced significant superyacht expansion plans at the Newport Yacht Club & Marina to provide more marina berths for superyachts. The expansion will substantially increase the number of berths available to superyachts (vessels over 80 ft).

IGY Newport Yacht Club & Marina USA

Situated on New York Harbor in Jersey City, New Jersey, directly across the Hudson River from downtown Manhattan, the Newport Yacht Club & Marina is a comprehensive modern marina offering 154 yacht berths.

“Newport Yacht Club and Marina has been a valuable addition to the IGY network of marinas, and we’ve determined that there is a large unmet demand for quality berthing in close proximity to New York City. The Newport Yacht Club and Marina expansion will allow more people to visit the marina and enjoy all that it has to offer and its convenient access to New York City. The capital investment at this time is a signal of our confidence in the property, as well as the northeastern U.S. boating market,” stated Eric Simonton, Director of Development and Asset Management for IGY. Construction is scheduled to be completed in Q4 2011 and current customers of the marina will not be affected.

The owner of the marina, Newport Associates Development Company applauds IGY’s expansion of the marina.  IGY ‘s  stewardship of the marina has brought change, innovation and growth to the already prosperous property.

Quarterdeck Marina at Bitter End Yacht Club being refitted

May 12, 2011

Work began on the new and improved state of the art Quarterdeck Marina at Bitter End Yacht Club shortly after Easter. The new facility is scheduled to be completed for a July 4th Grand Re-Opening, and replaces what was already one of the most popular boutique-style destination marinas in the Caribbean.

With over 18 slips on the primary docks (depending on the types and sizes of boats accommodated), the Quarterdeck Marina is looking forward to welcoming back their annual repeat-visit charter yacht guests, sailors, cruising voyagers, deep sea anglers, and fine yacht enthusiasts.

In addition to their in-the-know repeat visitors by boat, the charms and beauty of North Sound have drawn larger charter catamarans, top-of-the-line sportfish ‘battlewagons,’ and private megayachts, frequenting Bitter End’s anchorage and docks. North sound is, according to Chief Operations Officer Sandra Grisham, “perhaps one of the most popular watersports playgrounds in the Caribbean.”

The management team at Bitter End has listened closely to the needs and desires of their yachting guests and that information, combined with 35+ years’ experience developing an overall BVI waterfront experience, has informed the process of creating a facility custom-tailored just for their guests.

“The previous facility was certainly more than sufficient, and fit our needs in the 80s, 90s and until recently. But the new installation, built from the ground up, will have wider slips, improved decking surfaces, enhanced skirting, upgraded power, and best of all a better dockage layout to accommodate a wider variety of boat sizes and shapes. We think it will be a wonderful complement to our world-class shoreside offerings,” states Dana Hokin, Bitter End Yacht Club’s Owner and Managing Director.

Richard Starkey, of well-known Tortola-based Meridian Construction Company, is the General Contractor on the project. Noted architect Peter Brill penned the designs. Both worked closely with ownership and management to fulfill their goals. According to Starkey, “the project here at Bitter End will fit the needs of the clientele perfectly. It’s such a lovely location, and the new facility will blend in nicely.”

The most popular and expensive luxury superyacht marina berths

May 05, 2011

The most expensive and popular superyacht marinas in the world are located in the Mediterranean and the top three most exclusive and expensive private luxury yacht marinas or harbours in the world are all located in Italy. Another interesting point is that Monaco is not as expensive, as one would assume to moor your superyacht in a marina, coming in at 11th place. In fact, Croatia is more expensive than Monaco to berth your luxury yacht (except during the Monaco Grand Prix). France’s most expensive marina is no surprise – Port de Saint-Tropez – where in comparison with Capri, yacht owners only pay around half of the daily mooring fee per day (1.356 euros).  Also, it is an interesting fact that marinas in Eastern Europe offer yacht berths at significantly cheaper rates compared to the Italian leaders in the ranking list.

The marina mooring fees charged for a 55-metre superyacht during the high season was the variable used to form the basis for the ranking list. It should be noted that this list has been ranked by using the official marina berth rates and does not take into account ‘tips’.

Capri marina

The most exclusive yacht Marina in the world - Marina Grande on the Isle of Capri Italy

The 15 most expensive luxury superyacht marinas in the world:

1. Marina Grande on Capri – Renting a berth for a 55-metre superyacht here costs 2.585 euros per day during the Mediterranean summer high season in July and August.

2. Porto Cervo on Sardinia – with daily rates of 2.574 euros.

3. Marina di Portofino on the Amalfi coast – with rates amounting to 2.100 euros.

Marina Grande on Capri Italy

Marina Grande on Capri Italy

4. Puerto José Banus in Marbella on the Costa del Sol – yacht owners or yacht charterers pay 2.069 euros per day.

5. In fifth place, at 1.643 euros per day, is the Balearic marina of Ibiza Magna.

6. France’s most expensive marina – Port de Saint-Tropez, which comes in sixth place. This is no indication that the exclusive holiday domicile on the Côte d’Azur is any less popular. But Port de Saint-Tropez does offer no less than 30 yacht moorings in the larger yacht size category.

Saint-Tropez France

Saint-Tropez France

7. Seventh place is occupied by the marina Port Camille Rayon in Golfe Juan, also located in the south of France. In the small coastal resort between Antibes and Cannes, owners of a 55-metre superyacht can expect to pay 1.100 euros per day.

8. In Barcelona, the equivalent rate is slightly lower in price, costing 1.084 euros per day at the Marina Port Vell in the Spanish city.

9. The ACI Marina in the Croatian resort of Split comes in ninth place at a rate of 1.001 euros per day.

10. The Yacht Haven Grande on the island of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean - the only marina located outside Europe to make the list – where yacht owners and yacht charterers pay a daily mooring fee of 889 euros.

Portofino Harbour

11.Port Hercules in Monaco holds eleventh place at 888 euros.

12. Satur Marina Kalamiş in Istanbul, Turkey, with a daily rate of 882 euros.

13. Satur Marina Çeşme in Izmir at 743 euros per day.

14. The Italian Porto San Rocco on the Adriatic coast comes in fourteenth place – at 720 euros per day.

15. Port de la Plaisance de Bonifacio on Corsica – with a daily rate of 690 euros.

Porto Cervo Sardinia

Porto Cervo Sardinia

Berths for superyachts are scarce in the most popular harbours in the Mediterranean:
In addition to the location and services that a marina has to offer, there is one pricing factor that has a particularly strong impact on the high fees. A scarce supply of berths is the most significant price driver: “Yacht berths in exclusive locations are an extremely rare and highly sought-after commodity. In a similar way to real estate, high demand for a very limited number of spaces leads to a soaring inflation of prices.” The industry specialist is not surprised therefore that Capri makes the top spot of the ranking list of the highest priced moorings for ‘floating homes’. After all, the hilly isle off the Amalfi coast only has ten yacht berths available that are large enough to accommodate larger superyachts.

“Many yacht owners are surprised that Capri is more expensive than Porto Cervo, and that Puerto Banus charges higher prices than Monaco,” says Harry Peralta, Managing Director at Engel & Völkers Marbella. “Having the right budget is not enough though for anyone wishing to moor their yacht in these scarce berths during the high season. Most importantly, they also need to have booked months in advance,” adds Mr. Peralta, reflecting the advice he gives clients. Mr. Peralta also explains how prices for the few available berths can fluctuate greatly, depending on the size of the yacht and on seasonal events. During the annual Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo for instance, mooring fees soar to unprecedented highs of several thousand euros. In addition, not all large yachts fit into every marina. Superyachts that are more than 70 metres in length, for example, usually have to weigh anchor off the coast.

Alongside mooring fees, the high maintenance costs for a superyacht form another particular key criteria for consideration. In addition to the marina berth rate, yacht owners and charterers also have to budget for maintenance, repair work and crew expenses. Yachting experts estimate the annual “ancillary” costs of a yacht as being 10 to 20 percent of the procurement costs. It is therefore generally accepted that is more cost effective to charter a luxury yacht than to own one.

Monaco

Monaco has 2 marinas - Port Hercule and Fontvielle and they are comparitively inexpensive in the Western Mediterranean

As a result, the numbers that make up the wealthy client base for superyachts are very limited. There is certainly active movement on the market, as superyachts rarely stay in the same hands for longer than a few years. The financial crisis did cause a slump in market activity within the yachting industry for a short period. But since the beginning of this year, the international market is undergoing renewed growth and is once again on a success course thanks to a steadily rising level of demand.

These are the findings to emerge from a ranking list according to Engel & Völkers when ranking the 15 most expensive marinas in the world. The mooring fees charged for a 55-metre superyacht during the high season was the variable used to form the basis for the ranking list.
