New Middle East area manager and new sales office for Benetti

March 07, 2013

Benetti, part of the Azimut/Benetti Group, is once again attending the prestigious Dubai International Boat Show, running until March 9. With its exclusive yacht exposition, the leading Italian luxury yacht builder is positioned at the Super Yachts Builder’s Association (SYBASS) area.

Nabil El Jammal - New Middle East Area Manager for Benetti

Nabil El Jammal - New Middle East Area Manager for Benetti

For the occasion the Viareggio based shipyard, which celebrates it’s 140th Anniversary this year, completes another important step in their international expansion towards markets with higher potentiality, and consolidates their presence in the United Arab Emirates area opening a new office in Dubai and appointing Nabil el Jammal as Area Manager for the Middle East.

The opening of a new direct sales point is of particular strategic importance as it covers the Middle East area even more efficiently, consolidating the historic presence of the Azimut/Benetti Group: since the 1980′s one of the first movers in the area.

To best pursue this important objective, Benetti has brought Nabil el Jammal on board. An established professional in the nautical world, with great experience in the Middle East markets, Jammal will manage the commercial office, with direct responsibility for the Arab Gulf Region markets as far as Turkey, including both Egypt and Lebanon.

With a degree in Architecture from Milan Politecnic, and a Master in Yacht Design, Jammal has been involved in the design of numerous yachts and in an ambitious development plan for the Middle East for an important shipyard.

“Nabil has a deep knowledge of the product and the market, in addition to numerous and important relationships in the world of international yachting. The principle aim of Benetti’s direct presence in the area is to maintain relationships with the clients, accompanying them through the complete life cycle of the yacht, from design to construction and delivery, without forgetting the after sales cycle, as a fundamental part of the Benetti philosophy”, said Alberto Perrone da Zara, Benetti Sales Director.

“A consolidated experience in the international markets, great professionalism, and above all the great respect that Nabil el Jammal has earned in the international yachting environment, immediately convinced us that we had found the best professional to accompany Benetti in the execution phase of this important step of our commercial strategy”, commented Vincenzo Poerio, CEO MegaYacht Division.

Dubai International Boat Show 2013 to feature First ‘Made in the UAE’ Pavilion

February 21, 2013

This year’s Dubai International Boat Show will feature a dedicated display area which will highlight the country’s growing capacity as a boat manufacturing hub. Boat sales in the UAE marine industry experiences 40% growth in 2012 in comparison to 2011.

The UAE’s prowess in the field of nautical engineering will be given optimal exposure at next month’s Dubai International Boat Show, which takes place at the Dubai International Marine Club – Mina Seyahi from March 5-9, 2013.

For the first time in its 21-year history, the show will feature a dedicated Made in the UAE Pavilion to host the country’s top up-and-coming boat builders. Companies participating in the pavilion include Julfar Craft, Legacy Yachts and Ocean Boats.  The display area has been introduced to demonstrate the growing extent of the Emirates’ nautical manufacturing ability, which is demonstrated by the UAE’s 40% growth in boat sales in 2012 over the figures for 2011, according to a 2012 GCC and regional boating market report by marine industry consultancy Mike Derrett Marine.

The Made in the UAE Pavilion is sponsored by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which aims to promote the growth of the country’s small to medium enterprises in the boatbuilding industry, facilitate their break through into international markets and replicate the success of larger manufacturers in the UAE.

H.E. Hamad Buamim, Director General, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: “Dubai Chamber is delighted to be sponsoring the Made in the UAE Pavilion, which is a cost effective and unique platform for small-to-medium-sized UAE boat builders. This pavilion is helping to support the growth of UAE businesses and is providing them with global market exposure. Dubai Chamber works to support the development of local business and with the UAE’s history and expertise in the maritime industry it is an excellent opportunity to show the rest of the world the high quality of Made in the UAE products.”

Trixee Loh, Senior Vice President of Dubai World Trade Centre, organiser of the event, said: “The Dubai International Boat Show facilitates and encourages business opportunities and growth for UAE-based boating companies, which has culminated in the Made in the UAE Pavilion this year. The pavilion is an ideal platform for UAE boat manufacturers to gain international and regional market exposure for their top quality marine crafts, which are already in high demand.”

The setting up of a dedicated UAE Pavilion this year was a natural response to the increasing demand for locally manufactured craft. The country’s marine vessel manufacturers are now responsible for producing an estimated 60-70% of the Gulf’s total population of leisure boats, with UAE owners taking advantage of Dubai having the best boat repair facilities in the GCC, according to the 2012 GCC and regional boating market report.

According to a recent International Boat Industry report, the global economic downturn allowed regional consumers to look more favourably at domestic products that are often more competitively priced and offer greater levels of customisation for buyers.

One such manufacturer of smaller leisure crafts, Ocean Boats, will be exhibiting its products at the Made in the UAE Pavilion. Company owner, Ahmed Bin Ghulaita, has noted that the rise in popularity for home-grown crafts is down to national pride and the expanding technological capabilities of UAE firms producing leisure boats.

“There is a growing sense of pride about being able to buy local marine crafts in part due to UAE boat builders having greatly improved their construction capabilities. This means that they are now able to offer advanced features and greater levels of refinement for their clientele,” said Bin Ghulaita.

“The dedicated UAE Pavilion is certainly a great opportunity for smaller business concerns like mine to be able to showcase our expertise in producing first-class vessels for fun and leisure out on the water,” Bin Ghulaita added.

Over the years, larger UAE-based manufacturers have seen great success internationally, such as Al Hallami Group, Integrity Yachts and Emirates Boats. Gulf Craft, having celebrated its 30 year anniversary in 2012, is one of the most internationally recognised pioneers of UAE luxury yachts and fiberglass boats and a member of an elite circle of superyacht builders worldwide. Gulf Craft has a presence in major international boating markets through its Majesty Yachts, Oryx and Silvercraft brands, and has an annual production capacity of around 500 craft.

The Dubai International Boat Show is the region’s foremost maritime leisure exhibition in the Middle East and this year it is expected to attract over 750 companies and brands. It is anticipated that more than 26,000 visitors, 5,000 VIPs and a significant number of high net worth individuals will visit over the five days of the event. The exhibition will showcase the widest range of boats, yachts and nautical crafts in the GCC, as well as feature the latest innovations, world premieres and regional launches.

Highlights for 2013 include a three-day programme of an industry-leading Gulf Boating Conference as well as educational seminars and workshops where invited experts will address the latest trends, technologies and regulations affecting the marine leisure sector. Exhibitors will also have the opportunity to meet, network and develop new business opportunities in an interactive environment during the programme

Exhibiting companies and brands from at least 49 countries will be taking part with debut appearances from Malta, Armenia, and Malaysia while 13 new exhibitors from Turkey will be showcasing their products. Overall Turkey’s exhibition floor space is eight times larger than last year. At the luxury end of the spectrum, 11 Super Yacht Experience members, under the umbrella of the prestigious Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss), have signed on for 2013.

The 21st Dubai International Boat Show takes place at the Dubai International Marine Club, Mina Seyahi from March 5-9, 2013. The event will be open to trade visitors and the general public from 3pm – 9:30pm daily.

Excitement at the Dubai International Marine Centre in Mina Seyahi is at fever pitch as the stands take shape and the exhibition centers are mounted. Organizers of the show, the Dubai World Trade Centre, are confident that this year’s yacht event will be even bigger and better than last year’s – already a proven success.

In 2012, a record number of Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAs) members attended the show and even more are expected to participate in this year’s event, which begins on March 5th. At the last count, there were no fewer than 30 new exhibitors across all sectors from as far afield as Malta, Tunisia and Malaysia who had signed up to attend the four-day show.

Without doubt the most popular facet of the Dubai International Boat Show is the display of superyachts and to date, the Dubai World Trade Centre has confirmed that an impressive total of 19 of the world’s most luxurious superyachts will be showcased this year in the Superyacht Pavilion.

Among the luxury brands that are currently en route for the UAE include Italian yachting giants Benetti, German shipbuilders Lürssen, American luxury shipyard Palmer Johnson, and Sanlorenzo, from Italy.

Indeed one of the highlights of the yacht launches this year will be the Sanlorenzo Alloy 40 yacht 111, a stunning motor yacht built at the shipyard in Northern Italy.

Another Italian firm that will be attending the yacht launch is Mondo Marine, from Savona, a specialist in superyachts which will be participating in the Dubai International Boat Show for the first time.

Trixee Loh, Senior Vice President of Dubai World Trade Centre, said
: “The Dubai International Boat Show is synonymous with luxury yachting, and is the perfect opportunity for superyacht builders to market their high-end products to a burgeoning audience. The development of the Superyacht Experience pavilion supports the growing demand for superyachts in this lucrative market from regional buyers.”

“The Dubai International Boat Show is synonymous with luxury yachting, and is the perfect opportunity for superyacht builders to market their high-end products to a burgeoning audience. Horizon Yachts takes part in “The Superyacht Experience” event organized by SYBAss

November 16, 2012

The prominent luxury yacht manufacturer, Horizon Group, was one of 25 Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) members who took part in “The Superyacht Experience” event. This took place during the 2012 Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show and its participants spoke about future events as well as endeavors for the organization.

The meeting focused on SYBAss’s new mission – to actively attend more worldwide social and business events to educate others on the yachting lifestyle and promote the luxury superyacht industry – and all SYBAss members were in agreement with the new SYBAss charge.

Horizon Group CEO John Lu stated that according to industry statistics, there are currently 4490 yachts 100 feet in length in the global industry. He went on to note that 50% of these yachts were delivered within the past ten years and only to a small percentage of the total amount of global high net worth individuals, meaning that many potential buyers are still not being reached. Horizon will continue to explore new market segments while remaining dedicated to its current clients, and it hopes to grow the Horizon family exponentially in 2013.

SYBAss comprises the most experienced and prestigious luxury yacht manufacturers in the world, and Horizon Group is the first member of SYBAss from the Far East. Horizon was honored to be a part of “The Superyacht Experience” event and looks forward to contributing to SYBAss’ 2013 mission.

This year’s Monaco Yacht Show attended by 33,000 participants

October 04, 2012

From 19 to 22 September 2012, 33,000 luxury yachting companies, yacht owners, wealthy customers as well as representatives of future purchasers gathered in Monaco to visit the Monaco Yacht Show‘s 500 stands and to see the hundred-odd superyachts on display. Last year’s event showed signs of an upswing in the market. This year’s event confirmed the trend; slowly but surely, business is picking up.

Monaco Yacht Show 2012

Monaco Yacht Show 2012

With yacht prices that have fallen significantly in the past four years and a wider choice, luxury yachting was already clearly a buyer’s market, benefiting affluent customers provided they decide to buy quickly. In this competitive situation brokers and shipyards brought out their best selection of superyachts for the four days of the Monaco show: 103 superyachts of an average 46.70m length, including six mega-yachts of more than 70m and 38 brand new 2012 models.

Again this year the showcase spread along the Port Hercule quayside. Offshore 120 superyachts were at anchor, directly linked by tenders to the exhibitors on the docks. The constant to and fro of tenders showed that rendezvous diaries with potential buyers were full. Because the MYS today represents a decisive step in the yacht selling process.

Great success for Monaco Yacht Show 2012

Great success for Monaco Yacht Show 2012

The boat builders had an equally successful show: “The 2012 Monaco show was a success for us. Much better than last year. But I imagine you’ve been hearing the same thing all day,” said Henk De Vries, CEO of Feadship in an interview in the MYS studio during the show. “The 2011 show was itself the best there had been since the start of the crisis (…); the crisis is still with us, but serious people are keeping busy. We have to be fit and ready for the fierce competition but that’s OK. If you sit complacently on your laurels, you’re out of the race.”

Theo Hooning, Secretary General of SYBAss (Superyacht Builders Association) stressed the need to be at the Monaco Yacht Show to promote luxury yachting to a new clientele of non-initiates: “Once again this year the Monaco Yacht Show has proven itself the most important place to be if you want to share in the experience of superyachting. With such a variety of superyachts on show and events like our Monaco Sunset party, visitors had a host of opportunities to discover and understand the nature of these exceptional boats.”

That was one of the big challenges facing organisers and exhibitors this year: to attract a new A-list customer base to the show so that they can experience this ultimate luxury for the first time.

Four days of business networking

Cocktail parties at the stands, press talks and onboard parties, gala dinners in Monte Carlo’s grand hotels: there were about 100 events this year. A record. And each one an opportunity to expand one’s business network or promote one’s company among a private and professional clientele. For this the Monaco Yacht Show’s partner luxury brands used the Upper Deck Lounge, the new MYS reception area with sumptuous interior by Baccarat, Opera Gallery and Sabrina Monte Carlo/Paola Lenti. A great success.

This synergy between superyachting and the luxury world more broadly was well expressed by Patrick Hoffman, CEO of Ulysse Nardin, an official 2012 MYS sponsor: “Ulysse Nardin has a long history in watchmaking but also in yachting and the sea; Monaco is a platform for meeting people in a convivial setting to share our passion for yachts and timepieces. It really is the ideal place for meeting the ideal people in an ideal atmosphere”. German auto group BMW, sponsor and official courtesy car provider for the 2012 MYS, considers the show “the ideal stage for presenting the new BMW 7 and BMW 6 luxury models to a top-rank global audience.”

Awards for three superyachts

The official visit of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco to the Monaco Yacht Show was the occasion this year for three superyachts to be awarded trophies: The 2012 MYS design award went to sailing yacht Vertigo (67.2m, Alloy Yachts) for the outstanding work by French naval architects Philippe Briand and Christian Liagre. The trophy, a superb crystal glass sailing yacht, was made by MYS partner Baccarat. The Green Star Class 2012 certificate for boats built in compliance with rigorous environmental standards was awarded to superyacht Better Place (50.5m, Wally) and motor yacht Aslec 4 (45m, Rossinavi) by Italian ship classification company RINA.

Although MYS can always be sure of coverage in the yachting press, the organisers’ efforts to extend promotion of the show to the business and general media – and so raise the profile of the luxury yachting market among the general public – bore fruit. As well as some fifty interviews with leading figures in yachting recorded in the MYS Breaking News Centre (TV studio) and fed daily to the international lifestyle media, more than 800 journalists and media professionals were accredited.

So the portrayal of superyachting is no longer restricted to the specialist media. The sector is naturally of interest to the business media since it is a significant driver of the global economy. For firms in the industry obviously, but also for all the connected luxury markets, because it still has phenomenal scope for growth, especially among potential customers from the emerging great powers. A challenge that brokers and boat builders will have to rise to in the next ten years. Today there are about 4600 superyachts operating. And how many millionaires are there in the world?
