Cogs4Cancer cycle ride comes to an end

October 13, 2014

In what is undoubtedly the single biggest charity event in yachting, the Cogs4Cancer cycle ride came to an emotional close on Friday, October 10, 2014. The event saw all 16 of its riders safely navigate from Ancona to Antibes, after 6 challenging stages, totaling amazing 782 km.

So far, over €250,000 has been raised for Cancer Research UK and local French charities – Lenval Children’s Cancer Unit, Nice and ISIS Tzanck Mougins – an ASTOUNDING feat and a testament to all those who have been involved in the C4C fundraising effort, including Sunseeker Superyacht Management’s Ben Young – a key organiser of the event.

Friday’s 80km Tribute Ride from San Remo to Antibes marked the final stage of the C4C cycle, and gave some members of Sunseeker Monaco and Sunseeker France a chance to test their cycling prowess!

This final stage, by invite-only, saw an additional 70 people join the C4C peloton for the last push to the finish. Each rider raised €300 for the nominated French charities, and donned the now familiar white and green C4C jersey for the day.

After enjoying a light refreshment stop at the iconic Stars ‘N’ Bars in Monaco, the riders revelled in the homecoming arrival onto the IYCA quay in Antibes, complete with a fabulous champagne reception courtesy of Gourmet Deliveries.

The Cogs4Cancer cause, building on its wonderful success in 2013, has received a wealth of support from some of the most revered celebrities (including Rihanna and Michael Owen both of whom have been snapped sporting their Cogs4Cancer wristbands). As well as superstars; owners, industry leaders, businesses and 2 Royal families have also been backing this fantastic cause.

This includes Robert Braithwaite, the founder of Sunseeker, who has donated the largest amount – an incredible €25,500 on behalf of The Autumn Trust – whilst Sunseeker Monaco kindly sponsored this final tribute ride of the Cogs4Cancer ‘Superyacht Shipyard Tour’.

The event was headed up by Sunseeker Superyacht Management’s very own Ben Young, an avid cyclist who, following the amazing success of the 2013 inaugural C4C event, was asked by the 2013 team to organise this year’s efforts; a responsibility that he has not taken lightly!

A fantastic selection of events surrounding the ride were organised, allowing even those who don’t cycle to get involved and donate.

A calendar of events relating to the ride was as follows:

Friday 19th September – Gala dinner at Le Provencal Golf Club in Biot

Sunday 5th October – The team set off from Ancona

Friday 10th October – Tribute Ride sponsored by Sunseeker Monaco from San Remo to Antibes

Friday 10th October – Champagne welcome home at 16.30 on IYCA by Gourmet Deliveries – sponsored by Freedom Maritime

Saturday 11th October – Party at The Royal Beach, Antibes, featuring Superstar DJ Shaun Hughes who is cycling from Ibiza to take part.

ISO 18001 Health & Safety Certification for Sunseeker Yachts

September 30, 2014

The year 2012 saw the leading British luxury yacht builder, Sunseeker International, achieve management system certification for ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management and the International Document of Compliance for safe marine operations from the UK Marine and Coastguard Agency. As both standards have an element of Health & Safety incorporated within them, it was decided to pursue full ISO 18001 accreditation.

ISO 18001 Health & Safety Certification for Sunseeker Yachts

ISO 18001 Health & Safety Certification for Sunseeker Yachts

With the support of senior management, the Health & Safety Team, individual production line Safety Representatives and employees of all levels and trades, the business was audited independently and no major or minor non-conformities were encountered.

Since implementing ISO 14001 Sunseeker has seen a significant reduction in waste. The company has also taken some effective measures to reduce gas consumption by introducing new and innovative solutions for heating large spaces. The amount of waste sent to landfill has dropped to approximately 20% of the pre-2013 levels with corresponding increases in recycling rates.

With compliance for ISO 18001 brought under common management responsibilities and controls there has been a focussed commitment to the safety and well-being of all personnel on their sites and there has been a 30% drop in the average frequency rate of accidents and incidents amongst staff with an average of only 2 lost hours per month compared to 300,000 worked.”

Martin Arnold, Health & Safety Conformance Manager at Sunseeker International can also see the positive impact the certifications have had on the company. “The management standards have enabled us to consider the necessary requirements to safeguard our people, other parties affected by our work as well as our local environment and community. We have a strong safety and environmental culture within the company and are now even safer and more compliant as a business.”

Paul Attrell is ISOQAR’s lead auditor for certification, working with the company during the two phases of implementation and beyond. He says: “As one of the largest and most high profile marine businesses, Sunseeker fully realise their obligation to maintain their businesses around Poole and Portland Harbours. Each visit has witnessed an improvement in conditions within production areas and waterfront yards. ”

Presentation of this year’s Genoa International Boat Show

September 22, 2014

Set to take place from October 1 to 6 in the popular Italy yacht charter location – Genoa, this year’s Genoa Boat Show was presented in Milan on September 18, 2014. The presentation was hosted by the headquarters of Il Sole 24 Ore Group, the event’s media partner, and was attended by Massimo Perotti, President of Ucina Confindustria Nautica (the Italian Marine Industry Association), Anton Francesco Albertoni, President of I Saloni Nautici S.p.A., Marina Stella, General Manager of Ucina, Alessandro Campagna, Genoa Boat Show Manager, and of the Institutions’ representatives. The presentation was opened by the Councillor for Culture and Tourism of the Genoa City Council, Carla Sibilla, as well as the President of Fiera di Genova SpA, Sara Armella.

Presentation of this year’s Genoa International Boat Show

No better way to get an idea of the new Show than by taking a look at the figures: a surface area of 180,000 square meters, 100,000 of which in water, 760 exhibitors, 1,000 vessels presented, and over 100 new features. In response to industry demands, the Show has be extended by one day compared to last year.

The 2014 edition is the first step of a three-year plan for the reorganisation and revitalisation of the most important nautical event in Italy. This task has been made rather complicated by the difficult economic situation that has hit the nautical industry particularly hard, although the 54th Genoa International Boat Show is revealing the first positive signs of recovery. In particular, the sailing sector has registered a 22% increase in the number of boats displayed, some being world premiered. The number of exhibitors of sailing accessories has grown by 50%, and the figures recorded by the multihulls sector are also excellent.

Inboards are broadly in line with last year’s trend, while outboards – which this year will be on display in the water – have recorded an outstanding +50%. The strategy of allowing navigation trials, launched last year, is paying off, and is much appreciated.

Presentation of this year’s Genoa International Boat Show

Presentation of the 2014 Genoa International Boat Show

The Genoa International Boat Show is pooling its strengths to adapt to changing and complex industry needs, leveraging its more than 50 years of experience. Confirmation of the popularity enjoyed by the 2014 Boat Show may be found in the return of prestigious shipyards and international groups such as Ferretti Group, Sanlorenzo, Sunseeker, Groupe Bénéteau, Fipa Group, Hanse Group, Fairline, Cranchi, Absolute, Cantieri del Pardo, Solaris, Brunswick Marine, etc.

“From the outset, we had set ourselves two major goals,” says Massimo Perotti. “Firstly, we set out to focus on Italian excellence and production. Italian boats are a positive proof of our excellence in the shipbuilding world and in areas such as design and furnishings. Secondly, we worked hard to internationalise the event: the Show needs to promote our values abroad, and attract buyers and journalists from all continents. I am very pleased with the way the Saloni Nautici organisers have worked, enabling us to fully achieve both objectives.”

The first and most obvious change in 2014 is the new layout, an operation that began last year with the “red wall”, which accompanied visitors upon entering the grounds. “The format we experimented with in 2013,” says Anton Francesco Albertoni, “was fully appreciated by the industry, and this year’s more mature version fully meets the needs of exhibitors and the public alike. We have made it easier and more pleasant to move between the stands and along the quays, so as to provide an intense emotional experience, one that the Genoa International Boat Show continues to inspire in hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic visitors. The 54th Genoa Boat Show further consolidates the rapprochement between producer and consumer in an industry charged with passion on both sides, and continues to be unique in Europe for its variety, richness and completeness. I would like to thank Alessandro Campagna, who, in his role as Boat Show Manager, has once again made all this possible.”
