New 44m sailing yacht ANTHEM concept by Stephens Warring Yacht Design

January 09, 2013

The new 44-metre sailing yacht Anthem represents the latest breathtaking concept developed by the renowned US design studio, Stephens Warring Yacht Design. In Signature style and proportion, true to the Spirit of Tradition form, the spectacular Anthem superyacht concept comes from a small pool of drawings done within an aesthetic design study conducted during the past few months for an un-disclosed party.

The Brief

The 44m superyacht Anthem is designed with the intent of extended family cruising and an aggressive charter program supported by professional crew assistance and management. At the head of the brief was to underscore traditional aesthetic and focus on high-performance sailing. The studio’s answer: this wonderfully graceful powerhouse and home to generous and efficient accommodation suited to four double staterooms and 8 crew bunks.

Prancing in at a mere 230 tons, her long overhangs and delicate sheer help dictate a hull form that could make any predecessor of traditional hand jealous. Luxury yacht Anthem is designed with complete cruising luxury in mind; she will gracefully make her way to any destination without compromising racing performance for those days sailing around marks in a Bucket Regatta or one of many classic racing events.

Technical Specifications of the new 44m superyacht Anthem concept

LOA (hull): 144′ – 4″ (44m)
LWL: 113′ – 10″ (34.7m)
Beam: 24′ 0″ (7.3m)
Draft (fixed keel): 16′ – 8″ (5.1m)
Displacement: 230 Tons
Sail Area: 8385 sq. ft. (780 sq. m)
Power: Caterpillar 3512 1750 hp
D/LWL: 155
SA/D: 20.9

The powerful ketch rig centers the Anthem yacht’s horsepower to an easily driven and lightly loaded waterline by employing highly efficient “square-top” sail design in both mainsail and mizzen. A “solent-style” fore-triangle further eases changing of canvas, allowing quick tuning to the breezes and wind angles.

Forgiving but forceful, superyacht Anthem claims a sail/area displacement ratio of 20.9 promising lively and spirited performance on and off the wind, while an accessible and manageable sail plan mitigates unnecessary work for the crew. Wide separation of main and mizzen eliminates interference between the two and opens the way for fun reaching sails.

Below decks

The Anthem yacht’s arrangement features a seamless blending of indoor and outdoor elements. There are two focal points where interior comfort and outdoor accessibility meet via raised salon seating and cockpit arrangements at mid-ship and aft locations – each raised salon offering sweeping views under sail or at anchor, a flood of natural light, and wonderful communication with the cockpit. Offshore, the aft saloon provides shelter for watch standers and a huge navigation area; inshore, it’s a private aerie for the owner’s stateroom.

Down below, much attention has been devoted to the flow of guests versus crew patterns. There are three “lounge” areas in the main accommodation as well as ample space and privacy for the full-time crew. Access to vital systems and machinery spaces for regular operation and maintenance is excellent.

Boarding

With comfort and safety in mind, boarding the Anthem yacht can be done by passerelle when moored stern-to, or approaching side-to and boarding via a hinged section of the hull with stately companionway steps.

Construction

Hull and deck materials to be determined. All considered: Aluminum, Steel, Cold-molded wood/ Epoxy or infused glass-reinforced Epoxy resin / CoreCell foam sandwich. Interior partitions of cored panels with high-quality wood veneer and solid wood cabinetry; all interior components acoustically isolated from hull structure and machinery. To be certified ABS / ISO construction standards.

Deck Gear

Hydraulic-powered winches for all winches. Lines lead to specified line handling areas to allow hoisting and reefing clear of guests. Hydraulic furlers for headsails. Electro-hydraulic main & mizzen shape controls (vang, outhaul, Cunningham) pushbutton-operated from helm.

Deep bulwarks for grace and security. Two cockpits allow separation of guests and crew for safety of sailing and operational purposes. Capacious lockers and underdeck access for gear and sundry systems.

Rigging

Carbon masts. Options for furling boom, Vee boom, or conventional boom with lazy jacks. Swept spreaders for security without running backstays. High-efficiency square-head main and mizzen sails for more drive and responsiveness with less heeling force. Solent-style heads’ls: jib & gennaker for upwind performance and ease of sail changes. Masthead reacher on dedicated furler. Gennaker on “top-down” roller furler.

75ft sailing yacht ISOBEL designed by Stephens Waring Yacht Design

July 20, 2012

It was a very busy first racing season for the 75ft sailing yacht Isobel last year, taking plenty of podium finishes. Launched on the 15 July 2011 at Brooklin Boat Yard and fresh from a week of sail trials, the Isobel superyacht, designed by the US studio Stephens Waring Yacht Design, competed in the Castine Classic Yacht Race, finishing 1st in class, the Camden-Brooklin feeder race, taking 2nd overall place on corrected time, the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta, placing 1st overall on corrected time as well as the Shipyard Cup – a Bucket event – where she was the smallest yacht in the fleet. At the inaugural Penobscott Bay Rendezvous, she took second overall place on handicap.

Luxury yacht Isobel is the latest vessel to spring from the Stephens Waring Yacht Design drawing board. She is a 75ft light displacement fast cruiser and was the culmination of 14 months work from design to build completion. This yacht is the fourth designed by SWYD for owners, Mr and Mrs Schotte.

“The reason I came back to the design team at Stephens Waring for another boat for my wife and me is their extraordinary talent for creating a magnificent boat that truly suits the – sometimes conflicting – objectives of the owners,” said Richard Schotte.

Stephens Waring Yacht Design is well known for pushing the spirit of tradition design envelope and Isobel superyacht does not disappoint. Their latest yacht advances the edge of the class with a light-displacement hull form that pulls together characteristics from vessels as disparate as 19th century pilot boats and 21st century shorthanded racers.

A continuous flow from cockpit through saloon to the accommodation below allows the Isobel yacht’s crew to enjoy as much or as little exposure to the elements as they want. The powerful rig with square-top mainsail is fine-tuned for fast and comfortable short-handed sailing.

New chainplates for the 88ft classic sailing yacht SINCERITY by Stephens Waring Yacht Design

July 20, 2012

This month, the US studio of Stephens Waring Yacht Design has been working on the spectacular 88ft sailing yacht Sincerity, to be rejuvenated in partnership with the studio’s friends Trygve Bratz as well as talented marine photographer Alison Langley. Constructed by the well known Italian builder Baglietto in 1928, the Sincerity superyacht is a wonderful classic ketch and an excellent example of Gilded Age European yachting. Trygve and Alison have been pursuing a phased approach to a complete refit, dealing with specific jobs each year while keeping a busy charter schedule in Maine and the Caribbean.

Refit for the 88ft classic superyacht Sincerity by Stephens Waring Yacht Design

This year it’s time to renew the mizzen chain plates-the existing chain plates are steel, and badly corroded. Over the years, a hodgepodge of internal structure and reinforcement has been added, as the masts and standing rigging have been replaced. Massive solid blocking and steel plates to distribute the load had been peppered with holes as chain plates were added, moved, and discarded.

Trygve gave the Stephens Waring free rein to re-evaluate the structural requirements, and the studio developed a system that eliminates the heavy blocking with its rot-prone moisture pockets and replaces the huge steel reinforcing plates with more efficient bronze angle-section stringers. The sixteen steel chain plates will be consolidated into eight by landing lower and intermediate shrouds on the same plate, thus reducing deck penetrations and streamlining the rigging layout.

The main chain plates had a similar treatment in 2010, replacing steel with bronze. Luxury yacht Sincerity is now ready to handle the next big step in restoring her to her former glory-a new rig of wood spars. As a rare example of a yacht of her vintage with original Marconi sail plan, she will be an excellent addition to the classic regatta circuit, where original details are vastly important-both for judging and for ratings. Her Marconi plan makes her a great short-handed sailing boat, a delight for racing, cruising, or chartering.

Trygve and Alison have decided to move on from Sincerity superyacht, and are beginning to think about a new cruising boat. Sincerity is for sale, and is ready to delight her next custodians. In the meantime, she’ll continue her charter career in the Caribbean, with her old-world charm offering a unique experience.

The success of the Stephens Waring designed 90ft superyacht BEQUIA at the recent Pendennis Cup

July 20, 2012

Sailing yacht Bequia is a splendid 27m (90ft) yawl, launched in 2009 as the first superyacht designed by Stephens Waring Yacht Design. At the recent Pendennis Cup, Bequia superyacht has been tearing up the English Channel in the company of some other classic yachts, old and new. Pendennis Cup is a five-day gala event in Falmouth, England, organised by the renowned Pendennis Shipyard.

Luxury yacht Bequia is a traditionally built yawl that epitomises Maine design and craftsmanship – the yacht has all the elegance of a Spirit of Tradition design without neglecting a few vital ‘mod cons’ such as a concealed anchor deployment system and a fold down boarding platform.

Seduced by the sleek lines and performance of the W-Class, owner Jes Staley approached Bob Stephens and Paul Waring with a concept for Bequia superyacht and the project became a close collaboration that involved both husband and wife.

In 2011 Bequia yacht competed in her first St Barths Bucket, she returned to St. Barth’s again in 2012, and each time successfully causing quite a stir with her great performance and good looks. She was the 2nd smallest in the superyacht fleet and made the headlines in Yachting World for her efforts.

Here are a few excerpts from Bequia’s very happy owner at the Pendennis Cup:

“Nothing like matching a 180ft schooner (Adela) on elapsed time!

The IRC rating continues to favor the old gaff rigs (Mariette and Mariquita), and quite frankly, it’s nice to let the old ladies in first. They are pretty and have been well sailed.

Bequia continues to do well, with the big chute helping in the lighter air.

If you look at elapsed times, the boat is sailing well, and I’m beginning to feel sorry for the Hoek boat (Velacarina)…always docking just as we’re opening the beers!!

Deb is a champ with full foul weather gear on, but after Nova Scotia, Falmouth, and Sweden, Bequia will probably linger in warmer waters for a while. Lots of fun here, but Maine in November is warmer!!!

The more we live on Bequia, the more we sail and race her, the more the brilliance of your design comes through. Bequia is pound for pound the prettiest, fastest, and most comfortable classic on the water!”

Up next for Bequia yacht is a family cruise in Sweden, then down to Mallorca for a rest over the winter before a busy summer of cruises and regattas in the Mediterranean in 2013.
