Motor yacht Maidelle is currently cruising the Mediterranean Sea. After hand-over just of the snow blizzard ridden coast of Norway in January, she headed straight South to prepare for her charter season. During her build ICON Yachts worked close together with exterior designer Redman Whiteley Dixon and interior designer Cristiano Gatto.

The delicate exterior art of using unadulterated surfaces to sculpt a defined and fresh looking exterior has been used to great effect. During the detailed development of superyacht Maidelle, important characteristic elements of this particular arrangement emerged. This owner’s mantra has consistently been “a simple, young boat with perfect quality.” – Justin Redman, Redman Whitely Dixon

“The fundamental interventions in the layout reflect the owner’s needs to create wide entertainment areas, both formal and informal, to share with his guests, but it also reflects his need to allow himself roomy spaces for his privacy.”- Cristiano Gatto

The shortlisted designs will now be put forward for a second round of judging by a fully independent judging panel of yacht owners, senior yacht crew and acclaimed naval architects, designers and stylists from within as well as outside the marine industry, who will decide the winners of the coveted golden Neptune trophies.

The magnificent 44-metre sailing catamaran yacht Hemisphere features Oceanair’s blinds as well as light management solutions throughout the cabins and saloon. Having enjoyed a number of accolades from the yachting industry this year, the 145ft Hemisphere superyacht was honoured with a Judges Commendation in the World Superyacht Awards, and was a winner of the 2012 ShowBoats Design Awards in two categories: ‘Interior Design’ as well as ‘Interior Layout’.

Built at Pendennis in the UK, Oceanair worked directly with interior fit out company Metrica Interior and interior designer Michael Leach Design. Oceanair installed large complex shaped SKYSOL pleated blinds in the huge saloon. These blinds were custom-made to work through Somfy powered motors on an incline. The blinds were installed in a way so that they were hidden from view when stowed.

In all other areas and cabins on board luxury yacht Hemisphere custom painted and stained 50mm wooden powered venetian blinds were fitted. The challenge was to match the slats to the oak window furniture in some rooms and painted window furniture in the other rooms. Oceanair’s extensive fabric collection and sourcing of material was able to deal with this requirement.

These blinds were powered by Somfy motors and most were installed at angles to follow the contours of the boat through the clever use of hidden guide wires. Powered blackout Openshade roller blinds were also fitted into recessed side tracks behind the venetian blinds installed behind the venetians to provide full blackout in each room if desired.

‘The Young Designer of the Year Award’ winner at the prestigious 2012 ShowBoats Design Awards, talented Benjamin Julian Toth has received the coveted golden Neptune award for his motor yacht ReSeadence 50 concept. ReSeadence 50 superyacht represents an amazing conversion of a former 50-metre survey vessel into a vessel of ‘cutting edge design’.

According to the owner´s request to restyle the exterior of his vessel above main deck level and develop a new, general arrangement, ReSeadence 50 yacht transforms the research vessel character to a luxurious and elegant explorer. The unconventional exterior appearance communicates the fusion of a classic and contemporary design language, and enables a reinterpretation of the former utility areas. Marginal changes on the original hull are supported by the characteristic colour split up, in order to give the original main body a new look.

Nevertheless, the cut out section of the former hull was kept, restyled, and turned into a formal key element, which can be optically traced throughout the entire ReSeadence 50 superyacht. The white upper part is inspired by modern architecture and expresses the option of long time residence and a loftlike interior concept. Apart from the multifunctional utility deck, which is one of the main features, the bowsection offers a beachclub which can be fully closed or opened up, providing fully equipped areas for activities of all kind. Former fishtanks provide a generous space for a tender and toy garage as well as additional storage compartments.

The characteristic windowlines show the core of the interior concept of luxury yacht ReSeadence 50. While the front section of the main deck appears rather protective and enclosed, the rear opens up and offers panoramic views through its floor-to-ceiling windows. These can additionally be opened up, enabling an inside/outside saloon towards the spacious aft deck.

Apart from the saloon and dining area, as well as two bars, this deck offers four fully equipped guest rooms. The versatile front deck enables a generous “beach-club” relaxation area near to water level. The bow unit holds a convertible outdoor bar, an elevated spa pool, a selection of outdoor furniture as well as dining and barbecue facilities.

The master suite aboard superyacht ReSeadence 50 profits from its panoramic windows and offers a light-flooded loft, with an open bathroom allowing maximum views right out of the jacuzzi. Sliding glass doors open up to a shaded balcony, creating an inside/outdside atmosphere towards the aft. The master’s sun deck incorporates a hot-tub and seatings, as well as a bar unit and generous deckspace for sunbathing mattresses.

June 28, 2012

The recently constructed luxury yacht Hemisphere and sailing yacht Akalam were named finalists in the prestigious ShowBoats Design Awards, with luxury catamaran Hemisphere announced as the joint winner of the highly regarded ‘Golden Neptune’ award in both the Sailing Yacht Interior Design as well as Interior Layout categories. As the largest sailing catamaran in the world at 44.2m (145’) Hemisphere is renowned for her impressive interior space. The twin pontoons provide a beam of 16m allowing for a vast main salon area usually associated with much larger yachts. The naval architects, Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost, and the interior designers, Michael Leach Design, coordinated the use of the interior layout over two levels to create a sense of luxurious social spaces balanced with guest privacy and crew accessibility, with a further television room and five guest cabins as well as the galley and crew quarters all linked to this central area. As Marc Van Peteghem explains “By splitting the hulls into multiple levels VPLP were able to provide two spectacular forward guest rooms, while still preserving the 360° views from the saloon.”

Having chartered yachts for many years the Owners of Hemisphere started the project with a very clear brief: to create a family friendly interior style, using practical and easily maintained yet luxurious surfaces and textures. During the project the Owner’s wife was involved with all details; “She knew what she liked instantly” says Mick Leach. Attention to detail is second to none, with a consistent organic theme reflected in the great variety of finishes: a total of 18 leathers have been used and 15 types of stone, doors are lined with wrinkled dark leather, waves of pebbles line the showers, distressed walnut storage units provide a smooth contrast to crocodile finishes.

Mick Leach commented on the awards “Hemisphere was an exciting project to be involved in. The result is an amazingly tactile and unique interior. There is an incredible level of detail throughout and MLD are delighted that our vision and the high level of craftsmanship from Pendennis, Based Upon and Metrica has been rewarded with the Interior Design accolade from the ShowBoats judges.”

The jury were impressed by the use of electronic probes to monitor and prevent oil spillage, and electric actuators to prevent hydraulic oil leakage from the steering systems. Sewage treatment on board is carried out by an IMO-approved Hamann Super-Mini plant, while fuel usage and tank levels for the MTU 16V2000M84 main engines and the pair of ONAN 40kw gensets are continually monitored from the wheelhouse.

Three other key points that the judges noted are that the air-conditioning plant is optimised with an 180,000BTU chiller; that low consumption lamps are used throughout; and that the chosen anti-fouling paint is the Intersleek 970, classified as TBT-free by Lloyd’s Register. With regard to the wider construction of the yacht, the fibreglass hull is moulded using low-emission vacuum infusion techniques.
