66.9m megayacht HETAIROS with Ocean Yacht Systems´ hydraulic propulsion system among finalists for the ShowBoat Design and Technology Award 2012

March 30, 2012

The finalists for the ShowBoat Design Awards have been revealed and Ocean Yacht Systems (OYS) were pleased that the 66.9m sailing yacht Hetairos fitted with their retractable hydraulic propulsion system has been nominated as a finalist for the Design and Technology Award.

Being a designer and manufacturer of thrusters, rigging and hydraulics OYS have supplied to many award winning Superyachts over the years including the 50m superyacht Zefira, the 75m megayacht M5 (ex Mirabella V) and the 52m luxury yacht Nazenin V. Awards primarily are for the designers, naval architects or the yards themselves, it is therefore a rare occasion that OYS actually reaches a final specifically for the equipment they have supplied.

OYS have supplied 2 x 460hp hydraulic swing down retractable primary drives for the superyacht Hetairos, the first of their kind in the world. Combined they generate over 14knts under power and provide a bollard pull in excess of 10tonnes. The units themselves rotate 360 degrees and are positioned either side of the centreline just aft of the keel, providing incredible manoeuvrability.

Hetairos is built for performance, whether under sail or power, and therefore these hydraulic powered units fully retract into the hull within seconds when not in use, leaving a completely flawless hull as per the designs of Gerard Dykstra & Partners in association with Reichel Pugh Yacht Design.

Baltic Yachts, the builders of the luxury yacht Hetairos were so delighted with the performance, reliability and efficiency of the retractable propulsion system, that they nominated the system for this prestigious award. Hetairos was designed to push boundaries, and the propulsion system was no exception.

“In practical terms a Captain is not going to want to heave to or stop in order to start or stop motoring,” says Ian Crowden, OYS Director of Thrusters and Hydraulics. “As you can imagine this always brings with it the challenge of ensuring the complete system can withstand significant loads at all points of the raise and lower cycle. The units are designed to raise and lower at any speed up to a maximum of 15 knots, at which point we would prefer the sheets to be eased before any buttons are pushed!“

Other finalists in the awards equipped by OYS are:

- the Antares III yacht, a 30m composite sloop from Yachting Development equipped with a superlight vertical retracting bow thruster and swing retracting stern thruster.

- the 56m superyacht Fidelis by Perini Navi with OYS rigging and hydraulic control cylinders.

- the 67m sailing yacht Vertigo by Alloy yachts built with custom OYS carbon fibre vang cylinder.

The ShowBoat Design Awards ceremony takes place at the Monaco Opera House on 22nd June.

The ShowBoats Design Awards was specifically devised to judge and recognise the designers responsible for the individual elements of a superyacht. Aspects of the most impressive yachts launched in the preceding calendar year are scrutinised and judged by a panel of design experts.

RMK Marine is delighted with this nomination which follows on from the recent selection of superyacht Karia as a finalist from numerous nominations in the hotly contested World Superyacht Awards.

Designed for the experienced yacht owner for long distance voyaging, Karia has been built to extremely high quality and specifications with long term low maintenance as a priority requirement. Particular attention has been given to ensure an efficient and sea kindly hull design, low vibration and noise and exceptional interior volume for a 45m yacht.

There are a number of features that separate this yacht from many others. The 500GT sized yacht, has an exceptional use of space to maximise comfort with light, airy and versatile spaces for up to 12 guests. The owners are afforded plenty of privacy on the master deck and the yacht incorporates a swimming platform aft and 2 tenders stored under the foredeck. RMK4500 motor yacht Karia is also for sale and visitors have been tremendously impressed with the design, content and the quality of construction.

RMK Marine has previously won several awards for yachts built at the yard. The beautiful 52m ketch Nazenin V was honoured with the Judges Special Commendation prize at the World Superyacht Awards in 2010 and the Vripack designed motor yacht Caressa K also won an International Superyacht Society award in 2006.

RMK Marine stated, “We are very proud that this beautiful yacht has been recognised in these categories and pleased that the judges also appreciated the superb quality and design of this elegant yacht”.

With the investments in its infrastructure and facilities as well as in its labour force RMK Marine has continued to raise the level of the Turkish superyacht construction industry. RMK Marine offer great quality and service whatever the structural material; from aluminium such as used for sailing yacht Nazenin V to steel & aluminium for motor yacht Karia or composites as used for the Oyster superyachts.

The winners of the 2012 awards will be announced during a glittering gala evening at the Monaco Opera House on June 22, in front of a VIP audience of yacht owners and industry professionals from around the globe.

Neptune award for Hoek Design’s 43m Lionheart Superyacht by Claasen Jachtbouw

November 25, 2011

The ´Best Interior Layout´ Neptune award has been received by the Dutch studio Hoek Design for the 43m sailing yacht Lionheart during the ShowBoats Design Awards. Lionheart superyacht was admired for her marvelous interpretation of a J-Class sailing yacht interior.

The Neptune judges had many reasons for awarding the luxury yacht Lionheart´s interior layout. One of them was a brilliant conversion of traditionally small deckhouses into comfortable lounging and observation spaces. Taking the lower deck salon and dining area into account, the interior provides three distinct social spaces in a relatively small volume.

Highly-appreciated was the way the aft deckhouse provides an on-deck extension to the master suite while offering double entrance to this area. It means there is no need for the owner to walk some distance forward and then aft to enter his suite.

Moreover, within the confines of a well-known narrow J-Class hull, the Hoek Design created two agreeable and basically equally sized twin guest staterooms in addition to the master and a smaller bunk guest cabin.

The crew layout of the super yacht Lionheart was also appreciated for the way it provides comfortable accommodations in a compact area.

She was also nominated as one of the five best sailing yachts launched in 2010/2011 over 40m in the International Super Yacht Design Awards, together with the 35m luxury yacht Firefly, in the category between 24 and 40m.

Luxury Explorer yacht Big Fish by Aquos Yachts wins 2 more prestigious yachting awards

November 03, 2011

The 45.00m (147′ 7″) luxury explorer yacht BIG FISH has taken home two more top design honors during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show 2011, moving her into the rare field of history-making yachts. Superyacht Big Fish now has a trophy case with five coveted yacht awards, an unprecedented achievement as the first launch from her builder, Aquos Yachts.

The first new honor bestowed on the charter yacht Big Fish was a Neptune Award for Best Naval Architecture of all 2010-launched motor yachts. The award was presented Tuesday evening, Oct. 25th at the ShowBoats International Design Awards ceremony, held at the glamorous Mar A Lago resort in Palm Beach. The ShowBoats Design Awards is the longest-running awards program in the luxury yacht industry. These awards are judged by a select panel of industry experts and yacht owners based on a list of nominees presented to the judges by the editors of ShowBoats International.

The second award given to the Big Fish yacht was top honors for the Best Full Displacement motor yacht in the 40 to 60 meter size range, at the SuperYacht Awards. Presented at the annual International Superyacht Society gala Oct. 28th at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort, the SuperYacht Awards are selected by a panel of industry experts, and then are voted on by the entire membership of the Society.

In both prizes, the charter yacht Big Fish beat out a large number of other worthy contenders launched last year at many of the industry’s premier yacht builders.

In addition to the ShowBoats International and the International Superyacht Society awards, Big Fish has been honored by Boat International with a Judge’s Commendation at their World Superyacht Awards, and by both Yachts International France and by Asia Pacific Yachting magazines as The Most Innovative Yacht launched in the past year.

“We are thrilled by the reception and recognition of Big Fish by the yachting industry,” said Richard Beattie, owner of Big Fish, and chairman of Aquos Yachts, which commissioned the yacht’s construction at McMullen & Wing Shipyard in Auckland, New Zealand. “These honors, voted on by the leading lights of the super yacht industry, underscore the success of the Aquos Yachts vision, to produce rugged, seaworthy yachts that also offer the very highest standards of contemporary design and technological innovation, while at the same time providing the extraordinary comfort, service, safety and security that today’s yacht owners demand from their boats.”

Beattie added, “These awards truly reflect the efforts and talents of the entire Aquos Yachts team. It’s one thing to say you’re going to design and build a world-class luxury expedition yacht, and it’s another thing entirely to deliver on that claim. These awards prove not only that we captured the imagination of the industry with the vision behind Big Fish, but we delivered on that vision by successfully completing the longest, most difficult shakedown cruise in the history of luxury yachting.”

Only 15 months after her launch, motor yacht Big Fish is now on her second trans-Atlantic crossing and nearing 45,000nm on her own bottom. On her maiden voyage she crossed the Pacific Ocean, transited the Panama Canal twice, chartered in Antarctica, and cruised extensively in Tahiti, the Galapagos, the Amazon, northern Sweden and Norway, and the Caribbean. In the process she has booked more than $2.5M in charter income in addition to entertaining Beattie and his guests for another 7 weeks.

Jim Gilbert, Aquos Yachts’ marketing consultant and former editor-in-chief of ShowBoats International, said Big Fish has played a key role in the current economic revival of the yachting industry. “We first began promoting Big Fish and Aquos Yachts at the very bottom of the recession,” Gilbert said. “The fact that Richard Beattie was willing to invest in developing an important emerging market niche – yachts aimed at a younger, less traditional, and tech-savvy generation of owners – helped stimulate the market and spur interest in new ways to enjoy the ocean.

“As a lifelong student of yachting, I have never witnessed a more ambitious and successful inaugural cruise than that of Big Fish. She was a household name before she launched, and now with her extraordinary media coverage and design honors she has become one of the true legends of yachting.”

Yacht Big Fish is in the Canary Islands on her way to the Antigua Charter Show. She has already booked several weeks of charter for the Caribbean holiday season. In the New Year she will return via the Panama Canal to the South Pacific, where she will spend the winter charter season.

By the time motor Yacht BIG FISH reaches the Canal (for her third transit!) she will have completed more than 45,000nm of cruising on her own bottom, having touched six continents in the process!

Meanwhile, construction on Aquos Hull #2, yacht StarFish, continues to proceed on schedule for a service launch in one year’s time, and delivery in early 2013. Please be on the lookout early next week for a full set of renderings and animation sequence of StarFish.
