Exercise Your Right to Boat at the 2012 Seattle Boat Show

January 25, 2012

The 65th annual Seattle Boat Show has something for everyone. If the visitors wakeboard, waterski, fish, kayak, cruise or race, under power or sail, on boats small or large, want to trick out their yacht with new gear or hone their skills at seminars, this show’s for them.

Seattle Boat Show

Seattle Boat Show

This year’s show also promises tons of opportunities for boaters to indulge their inner techie as so many advances have been made in electronics and software in the past year.

Some highlights include:

Simrad’s new 4G Broadband Radar at the Yacht Masters’ booth. This truly dual range radar has two processors in it allowing a boater to have one range set at a mile for close in targets while the other range can be six miles for longer range planning.  What really sets this radar apart from its competition is the elimination of the main bang or the area around your boat that is always a dead zone that close in targets are lost in. This radar uses a different technology that allows targets to be seen next to your boat.

Also at Yacht Masters will be Flir’s new First Mate MS hand held thermal imagine camera. Flir’s award winning night time technology is now available in a go-anywhere hand held technology for less than $2,000.The Flir First Mate MS fits in the palm of one´s hand and turns the blackness of night into daylight. Put in a pocket when one heads out for dinner in his dingy and can be sure of his safety when he is coming home at night.

Miller & Miller Boatyard will have the world’s first touch screen wireless AIS transponder, the WatchMate Vision™ from Vesper. The system is incredibly user-friendly and can be accurately controlled with ease, even when hands are wet or wearing gloves. The full color touch-screen is capable of operating in direct sunlight. WatchMate Vision is the first dedicated display-based AIS transponder to integrate WiFi functionality, allowing AIS interaction with any wireless smartphone, tablet or laptop.

DMK Yacht Instruments is new company formed in 2011 by three Northwest boating aficionados and industry veterans with a goal of linking IOS capabilities (iPhone and IPads) to the marine environment. They will be displaying their DMK 11A for the first time ever. The DMK 11A is an electronics device with inputs for NMEA 0183, AIS, NMEA 2000, and Seatalk.  Once wired to the vessel, the 11A sends data packets via a wireless connection to a mobile device like an iPad or iPhone. The vessel’s instrument data, such as depth, boat speed, wind speed, and GPS position can be displayed as well as vessel monitoring information such as engine data.

Raymarine will have their new e7D. It is a compact yet powerful navigation solution for recreational and light commercial boaters. The e7D brings to the market multiple unique features never before seen in a marine multifunction display, including: built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and an H.264 video encoder which enables wireless video streaming to Apple iPhone and iPad devices; Bluetooth networking that lets you link e7D to digital music players and control them right from the helm; and a Sport-Optic Friendly” LCD display does not black-out when viewed with polarized sunglasses.

Less techie, but no less useful to the boater, will the display of Prodeco folding electronic bikes from Seattle E-Bike. Eleven of the 13 Prodeco models fold at the frame, and at the stem, making them very compact. It takes 30 seconds to fold them, 30 seconds to unfold them and get on your way. No tying them out on the rails of the boat, one can keep them dry and unsalty inside.  They make a special 20 inch line for boaters, private airplane owners and RV owners, called, appropriately, the Mariner. Its stem folds in three places. The high end Mariner 7 will let you circumnavigate even Orcas Island at 18 mph without pedaling, uphill and down, provided when you stop for lunch you plug in for an hour. Pedal moderately, and you will go faster, and can skip the charge.  In other words, one no longer has to be an athlete to explore the countryside at the ports he visits.

Seminars galore:
The seminars are always a huge attraction at the show and 2012 is no different. No other show in North America matches the Seattle seminar schedule in terms of the quality, variety and volume of seminars offered. There are more than 200 free seminars during the course of the show and advanced seminars through Boat Show University for a nominal fee. Many presenters are returning and there are 50 new seminars.

Selected attractions and promotions at the show include:

If Money Is No Object
The largest in the show is 90 feet and asking price is $3,950,000 million. Showgoers can tour it and a host of other luxury yachts at South Lake Union.

Budget a Little Smaller?
Not a problem. There are kayaks and dinghys small enough to fold and stuff into carry bags or dozens of brands of runabouts, fishing boats and inflatables available on a budget for as low as $250 per month.

1957 Restored Classic Chris Craft
Chris Craft’s are known for their style and great design and craftsmanship. This classic beauty has been lovingly restored by the local chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society.

Amazing Orca Boat
Is it a bird, is it a plane, is it a killer whale? No it’s Seabreacher. A unique submersible vessel designed to look like an Orca whale, reaching speeds up to 55mph with the ability of “jumping” as high as 16 feet. It can be viewed at CenturyLink Field along with amazing video of it in action.

Grind it Out
For those who want to know what it’s like to crew on a high performance sailing boat, the Harken ‘Coffee Grinder’ will give them an idea. Lowest times on the board can win great Harken sailing gear.

Kids Aqua Paddlers
Fun for the little boaters, kids attending the Seattle Boat Show can enjoy time on the water using the new Aqua Paddlers paddleboats. Life jackets will be provided. Aqua Paddlers will be available for use each day of the show.

Pitch A Fish
Fish tossing is a popular attraction at Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market. At the show the Pitch-a-Fish contest will give showgoers the chance to try it themselves by tossing (plastic) fish 30-feet through the air into a target for a chance to win a new 16-foot Avalon Eagle Pontoon boat from Tom’s Boat Shop.

Garmin® to Outfit Fluid Motion’s Ranger Tugs, Trawlers and Cutwater Boats

January 19, 2011

Fluid Motion, designers and builders of Ranger Tugs, has announced that Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, will be the exclusive electronics supplier to outfit their full line of cruising tugs, including the new Cutwater Boats—an innovative line of trailerable pilothouse cruisers. This new OEM partnership is being announced in advance of the Seattle Boat Show, where the first Cutwater Boats will debut.

Cutwater 28 Motor Yacht

Cutwater 28 Motor Yacht

Fluid Motion will debut its Cutwater 26 and 28 at the Seattle Boat Show, which will include Garmin’s GPSMAP 5212 with its unprecedented touchscreen interface, along with the high-powered GMR 18HD radome, GSD22 digital sonar, GXM 51 XM satellite weather/audio antenna and VHF 200 marine radio. Additional equipment selected by Ranger Tugs to outfit its line of 21- to 29-foot trailerable trawlers, include the GPSMAP 5215, GPSMAP 531s, GPSMAP 740s and AIS 600. For increased confidence at the helm, some Ranger Tugs models will also offer the GHP 10, Garmin’s Marine Autopilot with its patented Shadow Drive technology that automatically disengages the autopilot if the helm is turned, allowing the helmsman to maneuver the boat.

The GPSMAP 5215 will be an option on the Ranger Tugs 29 and John Livingston, President of Fluid Motion points out, “This model has a 15-inch screen—that’s a big screen for a 29-foot boat and is one of the ways we offer yacht-size features in a trailerable trawler.” He adds, “Garmin equipment is versatile and intuitive and their customer support at both the OEM and consumer level is reliable and top notch.”

“Fluid Motion can now offer its customers an intuitive, easy-to-use navigation experience that complements their cruising needs,” said Engelhard Sundoro, Garmin’s director of marine OEM sales and marketing. “Garmin is pleased to work with a quality builder such as Fluid Motion, and is confident that whether Ranger Tugs or Cutwater customers are looking for adventure at sea, or just have a passion for cruising the coast – they’ll enjoy stress-free navigation that comes from having a Garmin system onboard, and peace of mind knowing Garmin has a worldwide support network in place.”

Fluid Motion has been installing Garmin equipment on their Ranger Tugs boats since 2006 and with the launch of Cutwater Boats it was a natural progression to work with Garmin as the exclusive OEM partner for both lines. Both lines of boats along with their Garmin-outfitted stations can be seen at the Seattle Boat Show in January and the Miami International Boat Show in February.
