Rondal’s rig package for new 70m Perini Navi sailing yacht SYBARIS (Hull C.2227)

Rondal is thrilled to announce that it has been selected by the prestigious Italian builder Perini Navi to design and produce a complete composite rig package for its new 70m sailing yacht Sybaris (Hull C.2227). The impressive 70m superyacht Sybaris is a spectacular performance-orientated ketch, currently in build at Perini in La Spezia.

The order, won in stiff competition against other leading spar manufacturers, underlines the success of Rondal’s long term working relationship with Perini: this is arguably the most significant superyacht rig package in terms of size, performance and styling requirements currently being undertaken anywhere in the industry.

“This contract confirms Rondal’s place in the top tier of superyacht mast builders, where performance, quality, innovation and reliability all have to be of the very highest order,” commented Rondal MD Paul Dielemans. “Our mast business has never been about quantity; it is about understanding the brief for sophisticated custom projects, applying our expertise to create the perfect solution, and executing it with unsurpassable quality.”

Among the many interesting features of this project belong:

Comprehensive rig package

The complete package includes 75m/ 246ft main mast, 60m/ 197ft mizzen mast, booms, spreaders, standing and running rigging, and monitoring sensors.

One-piece construction

The 75m main mast will be Rondal’s largest yet. Rondal firmly believes in the benefits of one-piece mast construction and it has underlined its commitment to this exclusive building method by lengthening its composite hall to accommodate this and other large projects.

Style-to-order

Every Rondal spar is a custom project with its own unique mould. Rondal’s style-to-order capability will ensure that not just the functionality and reliability, but the design aesthetics of the spars will be fully in tune with the styling of the 70m superyacht Sybaris – a very important factor for the owner, the yard and the project stylists.

Performance-orientated

Key objectives for the design and construction of these spars will be to minimise weight while achieving highly sophisticated levels of rig trim for optimum sail performance in a wide range of wind and sea conditions – all in the context of assured strength and reliability.

Carbon fibre standing rigging

Rondal’s in-house rig experts have teamed up with Carbo-Link as their partner in the design, development and supply of standing rigging for this fully integrated rig package. Carbo-Link is a leading supplier of large, reliable, high performance composite cables capable of meeting the exceptional and sustained loads that will be generated by the 70m Perini Navi yacht Sybaris (Hull C.2227). At the same time their expertise in high performance systems is well illustrated by their lead role in supplying composite rigging for America’s Cup yachts.

New batten-car system

The all-new mega yacht Sybaris will benefit from a new batten-car system developed by Rondal in consultation with leading sail makers and other industry experts. The new system will minimise wear and tear on the sail and ensure fail-proof entry onto the track. Other advantages include reduced weight and enhanced opportunities for custom styling.

Advanced monitoring

The rig package will be fitted with a comprehensive load and damage monitoring system, where multiple sensors will provide continuous on-screen information not only of rigging loads but also of the physical integrity of rigging elements, especially those normally concealed from view.

New management team announced by luxury yacht builder Perini Navi

The Board of Directors of the Perini Navi Group has announced a new management team. Burak Akgül as well as Vanni Marchini, two of the group’s most experienced and successful managers, have been respectively selected as Managing Director Sales, Marketing & Design and Managing Director Operations.

Goal of these new appointments is to reinforce the management team so as to give the Perini Navi Group renewed strength on the global marketplace.

Burak Akgül, Managing Director of Perini Istanbul – Yildiz, has been with Perini Navi for the past 25 years. He has worked successfully in commercial and operational roles and will now become Managing Director Sales, Marketing & Design.

Vanni Marchini

Vanni Marchini has been Managing Director of the Picchiotti shipyard in La Spezia and also has more than 20 years experience as head of production at the Viareggio shipyard of the Perini Navi Group. He will become Managing Director Operations.

Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous 2013 to host impressive number of yachts

A total number of twenty-one sailing superyachts as well as six motor yachts have already signed up for this year’s Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous. The event will be held in a fabulous Caribbean yacht charter destination – Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands, from 20th to 23rd March.

The event, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) and Boat International Media (BIM), is sponsored by the Italian luxury brand for the second consecutive year and will host racing and social events over four days. In a new development for 2013 and following consultation with superyacht owners, participating boats will also be able to take part in the Loro Piana Superyacht Trophy, a race which departs Virgin Gorda on 25th March headed for nearby St. Barths and the St. Barths Bucket regatta.

Loro Piana has a long standing family passion for sailing and the core values of this unique sport are reflected in the company philosophy: the search for technical perfection in harmony with nature. Over the years, Loro Piana has created a unique range dedicated to the world of the sea and sailing, such as the Defender line, sported by the New Zealand team in its America’s Cup victory. Loro Piana has a longstanding relationship with the organizers and the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta (4-8 June, 2013) has been held annually at the YCCS in Porto Cervo, Sardinia since 2009.

Racing at the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous is set to be competitive in both the Performance and Cruising classes with a mixture of veteran competitors, newcomers and previous regatta winners participating. The Wally 101 sailing yacht Indio, overall winner of the 2012 edition of the event, will be taking part, as will the 42-metre superyacht Hanuman, winner of the 2011 Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous.

The Royal Huisman built yacht Hanuman, a modern recreation of the Super J Class Endeavour II, will be competing alongside the 1934 J Class charter yacht Endeavour in scenes reminiscent of the 1930s golden era of America’s Cup racing. At the cutting edge of nautical engineering meanwhile, the fleet will comprise three yachts from the Perini Navi shipyard known for pioneering innovative technology that allows immense yachts to be sailed by a compact crew: the 56-metre charter yacht Panthalassa, the 53-metre charter yacht Parsifal III and the 38-metre charter yacht P2 have all registered.

Other competitors to watch will be the 2012 launches, sailing yacht Sarafin and Freya yacht – the former being the first Oyster 100 vessel launched by the UK yard and the latter being a Swan 90S and the 2000th Nautor’s Swan yacht to take to the seas – as well as luxury yacht Cape Arrow, one of the latest Southern Wind 100 built by the South African boatyard specializing in performance blue water maxi yachts and chartered for the occasion by Pier Luigi Loro Piana.

“The combination of spectacular yachts, a stunning setting, top-class racing and great social events makes this an unmissable event in the Caribbean superyacht calendar”, commented YCCS Commodore Riccardo Bonadeo. “We are proud to support title sponsor Loro Piana in a regatta that goes from strength to strength and is set to become a jewel in the crown of YCCS Virgin Gorda.”

Panthalassa - Cruising

The range of social events, which have come to distinguish Loro Piana regattas almost as much as the racing, will be centred around the YCCS Clubhouse in Virgin Gorda’s North Sound and will include a Welcome Caribbean Party, Owners’ Dinner and a Prize giving and Farewell gathering. The YCCS Clubhouse officially opened in 2012 and offers members, guests and regatta participants an elegant bar, restaurant and pool terrace with spectacular views over the adjacent YCCS Marina and the island’s North Sound. A welcome lunch for owners and their guests will also be held at the nearby Oil Nut Bay resort on 20th March.

Participating motor yachts will cruise in company to Peter Island for a lunch hosted by the BVI Tourist Board and will follow racing on day two. The Tender Treasure Hunt around the North Sound on the final day will give owners and guests of the motor yachts a chance to explore the sheltered, pristine waters of the bay.

2013 – another busy year for superyacht racing

This year seems to be another busy year for superyacht competing, starting with the Antigua Superyacht Challenge at the end of this month. In March, there are two events virtually back-to-back, in the British Virgin Islands and then in St Barth’s, where more participating yachts are expected to be competing than ever before.

Palma de Mallorca is preparing for a full line up of 20 entries this year and with the confirmation of the J Class yachts the spaces are being taken up fast. Last year saw numbers in Palma reduced as several yachts made the decision to head to the UK for the London Olympic celebrations and the Superyacht Cup Cowes, but this year the focus will once again be on Palma. The Notice of Race is now available on the website of Superyacht Cup and entry forms can be obtained from kate@thesuperyachtcup.com

The Palma fleet so far includes several boats who will have competed in the Caribbean, such as the 35m charter yacht P2 (Briand/Perini), sailing yacht Athos (Hoek/Holland Jachtbouw, 62m) as well as superyacht Velsheda (Nicholsons/Dykstra/Camper & Nicholsons, 38m), charter yacht Ranger (Burgess & Stephens/Dykstra/Danish Yachts, 42m) and luxury yacht Lionheart (Hoek/Claasen Jachtbouw 42m).

The latest yacht to register is the new modern-classic 26m sailing yacht Tulip, designed by German Frers and built by K&M Yacht Builders in Holland. Tulip was launched in the Autumn 2012 and with her lightweight interior and carbon rig is likely to be a competitive entry.

The Superyacht community in Palma got behind several fund raising events for local charities over the Christmas period, collecting food, clothing and children’s Christmas presents for some of the most needy families in Mallorca. A party was organized by the yacht Aglaia together with Complete Marine Freight and STP boatyard in Palma where dozens of superyachts are wintering.

The party raised over 2,800€ and collected a mountain of presents which were presented to the charity Mediterranea for local distribution. Additionally STP in association with The Rotary Club of Mallorca collected more than 800kg of food, clothing and toys donated by staff and crew from the boat yard. Various projects are planning to continue such as a monthly food collection from marinas on the Island in an effort to reduce some of the suffering in the local community.

Long-term Superyacht Cup sponsor Pantaenius have generously purchased 40 Nikon Rangefinders to help ensure safe racing at SRYA (Superyacht Racing Association) sanctioned regattas. All SYRA regattas are sailed under the Racing Rules of Sailing 2013-2016 and the recently approved Appendix SY (see SYC NOR).

The changes to the RRS through this appendix are all based on the fundamental need to keep appropriate distance between superyachts and 40 meters is the designated minimum separation. Thanks to Yacht Insurance provider Pantaenius the range finders will be used by the on-board Safety Officers to assist safe racing practice.

Complete set of composite rigging back by Future Fibres for 60m Perini Navi superyacht Hull C.2193

At the moment in build at Perini Navi in Italy, the all-new 60-metre sailing yacht Hull C.2193 will feature a complete set of composite rigging back, developed by Future Fibres. In 2012, the company won the contract to supply the Perini Navi superyacht Hull C.2193 with the TSC and solid carbon rigging, which comprises V1s built to Dash -750. Last week saw Future Fibres ship almost a kilometre of bright red carbon cables to the Italian builder.

From the project’s inception, installing latest technological advances was high on the owner’s list of priorities. As a result, in addition to the most advanced carbon rigging on the market, Perini Navi luxury yacht C.2193 will feature a number of new technical innovations, including an advanced lifting keel, faster and lighter captive winches and a new furling system for foresails, positioned under the deck to maximise sail area. The flawless bright red finish, seen on the solid carbon lateral cables, was also at the owner’s request – ensuring that she will look even more imposing on the water!

Moreno Di Giusto, Head of Perini Navi Mast Division spoke of his decision to chose Future Fibres last year, commenting: “With Future Fibres, we’re confident we have the right people designing and building our rigs. Between the two companies there is a massive skill-set, and we believe that together we can make big advancements.”

Perini Navi mega yacht C.2193 is the first of two Perini projects that Future Fibres is currently working on. The second, a 60 metre sloop, Hull C.2218 yacht, will feature a full carbon mast and rigging package and is scheduled for delivery in winter 2013. It’s an incredible project, with a mast tube measuring 73.5 metres and a totally clear carbon finish, made possible by Future Fibres’ precision aluminium tooling, which is unique within the marine industry.

Newly launched Perini Navi superyacht STATE OF GRACE designed in partnership with Ron Holland

The newly launched sailing yacht State of Grace (hull C.2180) is the first 40 M Fast Cruising series vessel, constructed by the prominent Italian builder, Perini Navi, at its Istanbul-Yildiz shipyard. Designed by the yard’s in-house team in partnership with well known Ron Holland Design, the all-aluminium State of Grace superyacht is afloat and rigged and going through sailing trials during January before heading trans Atlantic for the winter season.

Luxury yacht State of Grace is intended to be an evolution of the existing Perini/RHD designs, built in lightweight aluminium and aimed at high performance world cruising.

Following the completion of hull C.2180 superyacht State of Grace, the next Perini Navi/RHD designs to launch will be the first of the new 60m series. Three of these important new designs are presently under construction.

Sailing yacht STATE OF GRACE launched by Perini Navi as their first yacht in new 40 M Fast Cruising series

The Perini Navi Group, world’s renowned company in the design and construction of sailing and motoryachts, has recently celebrated the launching of sailing yacht State of Grace (hull C.2180) at the Perini Navi Istanbul/Yildiz shipyard. The breathtaking State of Grace superyacht represents the first luxury vessel in the new 40 M Fast Cruising series.

Following the 88 M charter yacht Maltese Falcon, State of Grace superyacht is the second Perini Navi yacht to have been constructed entirely at the Group’s Istanbul shipyard.

Hull C.2180 S/Y State of Grace, designed in-house by Perini Navi naval architects in collaboration with New Zealander Ron Holland, has sleek lines and both hull and superstructure in aluminium.

With just 220 tons displacement, State of Grace yacht is sure to perform brilliantly in all sailing conditions. To performance add the comfort, quality and safety features that have always been a distinctive feature of Perini Navi yachts.

The 1,192 sq mt sail plan can be handled by just one person thanks to an innovative sail control system designed by Perini Navi and built by their Mast Division. The luxury yacht State of Grace has a 50 M mast, furling boom and standing rigging all made with state of the art in carbon fibre materials. To guarantee performance, this fast cruiser has laminated sails.

The State of Grace yacht interior spaces are spare and classic enriched with touches of contemporary flare. The main saloon is on two levels and has a comfortable dining room and an ample living area. The yacht’s four cabins, including a full beam owner’s suite with a gym, have innovative layouts and can accommodate up to nine guests comfortably.

In the transom area, which can be reached along an elegant staircase, a hydraulically controlled platform gives direct access to the sea and a 5.5 M tender is stored in a semi-recessed well to keep the State of Grace yacht’s lines harmonious and sleek. The interior design and layout are the work of Perini Navi interior designers.

Meanwhile, at the Perini Navi Istanbul-Yildiz shipyard work on the first yacht in the 70 M series, scheduled for 2015, is proceeding well while the third yacht in the 60 M series could be ready in the next two years.

In the year 2013 the Perini Navi Group will launch the first yacht in their 60 M series as well as the 73 M motor yacht Hull C.2189 from the Picchiotti Vitruvius® series.
