32m Sailing Yacht AKALAM by Barracuda Yacht Design and Pendennis

June 30, 2011

Sailing yacht AKALAM, the new 32m/105ft superyacht designed by Barracuda Yacht Design, and built by Pendennis, begins her new life cruising Mediterranean seas after recently being delivered to her owners.

The most distinctive feature about the design of Superyacht Akalam is the expansive use of glass within both pilothouse and hull. This technical achievement, followed by successful implementation by the skilled craftspeople at Pendennis, has to be regarded one of the defining features about this project and could easily set a trend in future yacht designs.

Once aboard S/Y AKALAM you notice the coamings have been pushed out to almost the full beam-width, creating the second most interesting aspect, which is an unusually large 60sqm aft-deck area.

Twin helm stations adjoin the rear of the pilothouse, meaning this sociable and well-appointed space is unencumbered by crew and protected from the sun and effects of the weather by a large, fixed bimini with removable side-screens, mounted on a central arch.

Once inside Pendennis 32 metre sailing yacht Akalam, natural light engulfs the lower saloon and accommodation areas; a result of no less than 13 windows on each side of the hull, affording the owner’s room, twin guest cabins and lower saloon simply amazing vistas of the outside world. The effect is replicated within the pilothouse, itself benefitting from almost 360° degree views of the outside world from within.

Such is the level of light and sense of spaciousness inside the Akalam yacht that, in some areas, there is almost no discernible difference in feeling from being outside than in. The amazing sensory experience continues when sailing close upwind; where the leeward side windows become partially immersed beneath the sea and water can be seen rushing past as the yacht makes way.

Finished in graphite black with matching carbon rig and cream painted superstructure, the aluminium hull and elevated pilothouse of the luxury yacht AKALAM combine to give an attractive and traditional look, with gently rising shear, traditional bow and raised counter stern.

The designer’s brief was comprehensive and presented many challenges. The owner took the view the design ‘should not have to follow the concept of a yacht just because it is a yacht!’ Outdoors living was a priority and the inside had to interact with the outside as much as possible.

Inigo Toledo and his team at Barracuda Yacht Design overcame the significant technical challenge presented by the request for so many windows, by focussing rig tension on an ingenious double-bottom rigid aluminium box structure, concealed well below the floor. This created a so called ‘soft-section’ outside the area of the shrouds, reducing stress in the sides of the hull and facilitating inclusion of this amount of windows.

The challenges offered by these innovative and unique design features and the exceptionally high quality finish anticipated by the owner, provided an opportunity for the team at Pendennis to showcase their technical experience and in-house finishing skills, successfully completing the build this spring to the exacting standards of the clients.

Using mainly light sycamore with contrasting dark grey tinted zebrano and touches of olive and panga woods, interior designer, Javier MÅ©noz, has created a sharp and sophisticated ‘apartment’ style feeling and the effect continues throughout the whole of the interior, including the pilothouse, lower saloon, galley, crew area, owner’s suite and two twin-bed ensuite guest rooms.

The custom-made ‘patio-style’ curved sliding glass door from the pilothouse to the aft-deck area is very impressive. A sophisticated privacy setting, using LED technology, turns the glass from completely clear to opaque at the flick of a switch and a gas seal, similar to that used on aircraft doors, ensures complete security once inside.

The side and foredeck areas have been kept clear and free of clutter, courtesy of captive drum winches, concealed turning blocks and under-deck conduits for sheets and lines.

Immediately in front of the mast, there is a dedicated stowage area for the tender, launched and recovered via a boom/crane attached to the mast.

Sailing yacht AKALAM has been designed for ease of handling and fitted with a steering system by JP3 including an all-carbon rudder and stock, self-tacking jib and remote control handling of lines and winches. An onboard control system by SPIN of Barcelona monitors many of the yacht’s systems and functions including various parts of the rig and sail trim, tank levels, hydraulic pump monitoring etc and via control over the bow and stern thrusters, enables ‘helicopter style’ turning ability in the tightest of spaces via a single joystick operation.

Close sailing angles courtesy of a retractable dagger-board, varying draught from 3.6m to 5.5m, have been achieved. Upwind at 25 degrees apparent is considered more than acceptable for a yacht of this type, while reducing leeway by at least 5 degrees will enable faster passage times even still. Under power, a 610hp MAN diesel motor provides comfortable passage speeds in excess of 13.5 knots.

Pendennis sailing yacht Akalam – project B105 completes sea trials

December 16, 2010

Pendennis 32 metre Barracuda Yacht Design sailing yacht B105 project Akalam was launched last month an since then great progress has been made on the vessel. After her 22 month build journey at Pendennis, the completed yacht Akalam was able to show off her distinctive lines and styling during the two-day trials in Falmouth.

Now named Akalam, this 32m Barracuda Yacht Design Sloop created a spectacular sight against the cliffs and castles of Pendennis and St Mawes. During her trials she achieved 14knots under power and over 11knots sailing, with a wind of 20-25knots in the Bay.

S/Y Akalam is a technically advanced yacht, designed and built to the highest standards with uncompromising attention to detail at every stage of her development. The elevated pilot house with a large glass area provides the yacht with her unique profile. Most impressive is the amount of glass along sail yacht Akalam sides as the huge windows form an almost unbroken vista from the interior of the vessel, enhancing the cruising experience by allowing as much natural light in as possible.

Such a design presented unique challenges to the designers. As Iñigo Toledo, of Barracuda Yacht Design, explained ‘bearing in mind the larger than normal window area in the hull sides, Barracuda has successfully alleviated any potential concerns about the integrity of the rig by ensuring rig tension is focused on the double-bottom rigid structure, thereby diverting most of the stress away from the hull’. Under sail the Barracuda 105 has been designed for ease of handling and will carry a self-tacking jib and no running backstays. A retractable dagger board increases her draught from 3.6m to 5.5m allowing a wide range of cruising and anchoring opportunities.

The social areas and master cabin on the Pendennis 32 metre sailing yacht Akalam are both of a substantial size and comparable with yachts of a much bigger scale and are complemented with an impressive 60 m2 covered aft deck space. This was achieved on the aft deck by positioning the coamings and seating positions right out to almost the full beam width. The interior by Javier Muñoz consists of contemporary styling, with neutral cream leather and upholstery balanced by hand crafted features in a mixture of mixture of sycamore, grey tinted zebrano with further accents of olive and panga woods. This enhances the feeling of space and luxury complementary to the natural light that permeates the vessel. Superyacht Akalam is now undergoing the finishing touches at Pendennis prior to handover to the owner.

Pendennis Yachts Christopher and B105 receive rigs from New Zealand

September 30, 2010

Pendennis Shipyard recently received three enormous masts in preparation for instalment on Pendennis’ current new build projects:  Super Yacht Christopher is due to be complete by January 2011 in time to race at the St Barths Regatta and the Barracuda designed Sailing Yacht B105 is already in the water and due to be handed over to the client before Christmas.

The three carbon fibre rigs were shipped from Southern Spars in New Zealand, one of the leading producers of yacht rigging globally. With the largest measuring just under 55m in length, it was an impressive sight as the bulky cargo was unloaded onto the dockside at Pendennis.

Pendennis’ emphasis on quality of build necessitates materials and equipment being resourced globally on a regular basis as well as working closely with high quality UK suppliers. Ongoing trade relationships between New Zealand and Pendennis have proved a valuable asset to the company leading to exceptional superyacht build and refit results.

Sam Lewis, New Zealand Trade Commissioner – UK and Ireland, visited the yard to see the arrival of the rigs as well as tour Pendennis’ facilities and understand more about the invaluable business relationships between the two countries.

“It is great to see these yachts coming out of this truly impressive facility with New Zealand content. I am also pleased to note that the Southern Spars rigs are only a part of the growing relationship between Pendennis and our marine industry – a collaboration we certainly encourage and support.

“We’re looking forward to strengthening our relationship with the UK marine industry as we prepare to welcome the world in 2011 for the Rugby World Cup. We’ll be inviting our British visitors to take part in a variety of marine sector showcase events taking place during the tournament,” commented Mr Lewis.

Pendennis B105 Sailing Yacht getting ready for her launch later in September 2010

Following the installation of her dagger board later this week sailing yacht B105 will be moved into the outer portion of Pendennis’ 150m covered dock, which is one of Europe’s largest undercover refit spaces. This will enable mast installation later this month. Generator and engine trials will also be commencing in advance of the full sea trial programme.

Currently in the final stages of completion the B105 sloop has been designed with comfort and entertaining in mind. The owner’s full width aft stateroom is comparable to that of a vessel much larger in size and her impressive 60 m2 covered deck space offers plenty of comfort with an arrangement of sofas and tables for the ultimate al fresco dining and socialising experience.

In addition the interior has been finished in a mixture of sycamore, grey tinted zebrano with further accents of olive and panga woods which add to the overall impression of a light and spacious luxurious living environment.

The seamless transition from the cockpit into the pilothouse consists mostly of glass with the addition of 26 large hull windows which offer not only panoramic views but also give a sense of being integrated with the outside, making this a perfect vessel for Mediterranean cruising. Pendennis super yacht B105 is sure to create an impact following her delivery, which is scheduled before Christmas 2010.
