MGMT Yacht focusing on future of London as a Superyacht destination

January 25, 2013

This Sunday will mark six months since the Olympic opening ceremony as well as six months since London has become the superyacht destination of 2012. MGMT Yacht, the superyacht advisory firm and London yacht agent who were responsible for offering technical and administrative expertise to visiting superyachts during the games, is now concentrating on the future of London and its role as a superyacht destination.

Few cities in the world boast the kind of landmarks London has in spades – and with unique access to iconic backdrops, such as Tower Bridge and Europe’s tallest building the Shard a berth on the River Thames undoubtedly offers some of the most impressive city moorings in the world.

There is no reason to be put off by the weather either. It’s officially not raining in London 94 per cent of the time! London has less rain than Rome and more Michelin star restaurants than Paris. London has recently been voted both the business capital of the world and the fashion capital of the world. London has also recently retained its standing as the world’s top financial centre. With so much choice, an endless list of things to do and see, it is no wonder that London should be the new playground for super wealthy yacht owners.

Superyacht owners looking for an alternative destination to the crowded marinas of the Mediterranean are attracted to London with its better mooring rates and access to Northern European shipyards. London offers things that the South of France simply cannot.

Mark Upton, Managing Director of MGMT Yacht said “For the first time this summer, during the Olympics Games, some of the world’s largest superyachts came to London. But it appears that won’t be last time. Superyacht owners are now convinced that London has much more to offer them than the more traditional and predictable yacht destinations – namely Monaco or Cannes.”

Some of the largest superyachts were in London this summer, including mega yacht ‘Octopus’, owned by co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen and the 74m motor yacht ‘Ilona’, owned by Frank Lowy, co-founder of Westfield. Moored in Canary Wharf they couldn’t have been closer to the action!

MGMT will be offering numerous services to visiting yachts, such as cruise planning, clearances, visas, bunkering, aviation support, provisioning, ground tours, full concierge service and more to enable superyacht guests and crew to enjoy the best that London and the UK has to offer.

The rescue operation has taken place following a 406 MHz Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) 645 miles south-west of San Diego, CA on November 15, 2012. The small sailing vessel was on her way from Hawaii to Catalina at the time of the EPIRB activation, just after their sails got damaged. U.S. Coast Guard rescue personnel at the Eleventh District Command Center received the alert and launched a search aircraft from Sacramento and requested superyacht Octopus to divert and aid. The Lurssen built mega luxury yacht OCTOPUS was about 50 miles from the Sequel, reaching the sailboat in 3 hours. This is the second time since her enrolment in AMVER in 2011, that the 126-metre yacht got involved in a rescue.

Scale model of the 126 m Lurssen superyacht OCTOPUS

October 10, 2012

The result of a wonderful passion for creating ship models is this 1:50 scale model of the 126-metre luxury motor yacht OCTOPUS, which was built by the prestigious German shipyard Lurssen in 2003. Jurgen Goller and Roland Hache constructed the 2,52 metre superyacht OCTOPUS model and presented it for the first time on water this September. Roland Hache also built a model of the motor yacht Lady Lola (see picture at the bottom of the article).

It took two years to build the Octopus Yacht Model and she was built based only on pictures and different photos found on the internet. The two friends had absolutely no access to the general plans, layout drawings or any other designs of the original yacht.

Stefano Pastrovich, Espen Oeino and Marnix Hoekstra to attend SuperyachtDesign Summit

August 31, 2012

Taking place at Design Centre Chelsea Harbour in London, the first SuperyachtDesign debate of 2012 was attended by three British respected designers, comprising Andrew Winch, Terence Disdale as well as Tim Heywood. The next chapter – in what is expected to be another sell-out event – will host another amazing trio, this time, three of Europe‘s most modern and influential superyacht designers. They are Genoa’s Stefano Pastrovich, Norway’s Espen Oeino and Holland’s Marnix Hoekstra.

The first Superyacht Design Summit of 2012: The Bannenberg Reunion

The debate, hosted by SuperyachtDesign magazine, during Focus/12 as part of the Conversation in Design programme at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour will be held on Tuesday 25 September from 5.30pm – 7.30pm. It will follow the successful format of the first event in which the British panel were questioned by Martin Redmayne, The Superyacht Group’s chairman. As a daring and sharp interviewer, Redmayne always invites his subjects to reveal the psychology behind their designs and their inspirations, as well as humorous anecdotes.

If a new paradigm in superyacht design is emerging, these three are likely to be shaping it. Designs such as Pastrovich’s 99m dual-fuel superyacht Xvintage in collaboration with Fincantieri — presented at the 2011 Global Superyacht Forum — saw the first plausible realisation of an LNG powered superyacht.

Stefano Pastrovich

Stefano Pastrovich

Arguably needing no introduction, the biographies of all three designers nonetheless make for exciting reading. Italian naval architect Stefano Pastrovich has been working in the industry since 1997. His first big breakcame in collaboration with Martin Francis on the 57m motor yacht SenseS. He went on to become the chief designer at the Wally style office for five years where he developed the styling of the 118 superyacht Wallypower. Pastrovich is a self styled flexible and highly open minded designer, quoted as saying, “design any kind of boat, no holds barred, so long as it’s the best of its kind.” This has resulted in a massive range of concepts including a conversion of a 77-metre ocean-going tug, topped only by his latest 92-metre ‘supertug’ project Nikki Beach, for Lürssen Yachts.

Espen Oeino

Espen Oeino

Norwegian born Espen Oeino has certainly not limited himself to this corner of the globe. His 14-strong team has a client base stretching from Asia and the Far East to the US. Collaborations with the finest yards are endless including the recently announced design for Sunrise’s 63m yacht Project 601 as well as Hull 632 superyacht, and 72m superyacht Stella Maris from Viareggio Yachts launched in August and premiering at Monaco Yacht Show. Like Pastrovich, he also began his career with Martin Francis, where he became project manager of the legendary Eco project, now known as Engima. Espen Oeino International (EOI), is behind such headline grabbers as 126.2m megayacht Octopus, 71m luxury yacht Skat and 78m Madsummer superyacht.

Marnix Hoekstra

Marnix Hoekstra

Completing the line-up, Marnix Hoekstra, as a graduate in naval architecture and marine engineering, is one of the third generation owners of Vripack. The Dutch naval architecture, design, engineering and brokers firm was founded in 1961 by Dick Boon. Under the maxim “the quality of work is the sum of experience and enthusiasm”, Vripack has designed and refitted many stunning superyachts including the refit of Amels’ 74m superyacht Ilona, and design and engineering of 42m luxury yacht Star. These are just some examples that demonstrate why Vripack is one of the world’s leading design companies.

126m Lurssen motor yacht OCTOPUS to assist with recovery of H.M.S. Hood’s Bell

August 07, 2012

Launched by the prestigious German builder Lurssen Yachts in 2003, the 126m motor yacht Octopus, owned by Paul Allen, will assist with recovery of H.M.S. Hood’s Bell. Taking place in late August, this amazing expedition, approved by the Secretary of State for Defence, is sponsored by the HMS HOOD Association as well as the National Museum of the Royal Navy. It will be led by David Mearns from Blue Water Recoveries.

The main focus of this expedition is to return the bell to the Royal Navy, to be conserved and then gifted to the Museum in Portsmouth to commemorate the 1,415 members of HOOD’s ship’s company lost in action against the Bismarck on 24 May 1941.

The other important sponsor of the project is Vulcan Incorporated, which represents the business and philanthropic interests of Paul G. Allen. As he did with the filming of the wreck of HMS ARK ROYAL in 2002 for a BBC documentary, Paul Allen is prepared to donate the use of his private yacht Octopus for this project at no cost to HM Government.

Lurssen’s luxury yacht Octopus will be crossing the Atlantic in late August after the Olympics so this is a rare opportunity to take advantage of having such a well-equipped expedition ship available in the region for this project.

London welcomes 10 spectacular superyachts for the start of the 2012 Olympics

July 24, 2012

Ten of the world’s biggest privately-owned superyachts are now anchored in the river Thames in London to experience the start of the 2012 Olympics. These include the 45m luxury yacht Harle by Feadship, as well as the 65m Seanna superyacht by Benetti.

Dwarfing the usual array of maritime craft normally seen on the River Thames, some of the world’s biggest and most expensive superyachts never before seen in London have dropped anchor in the Capital’s prime Olympic locations. London’s Canary Wharf has been transformed into a playground for the superyachts’ glamorous owners. VIPs and celebrities will be stepping onboard next week to enjoy the ultimate Olympic experience.

Maldives – a world favorite for a superyacht cruising journey

May 07, 2012

Becoming one of the best superyacht destinations in the world, the Maldives Archipelago, boasts groups of 26 atolls in completely natural formation, with a small number of islands inhabited, waiting to be discovered.

Aerial Rihiveli Sunrise Island

The flat islands are formed from coral layers, the highest point rarely being more than 6’ above sea level. Located in the Indian Ocean 670 km south-west of Sri Lanka and covering an area of 300 km, they are protected from monsoon devastation by barrier reefs and rarely suffer from major storms.

These Maldives archipelago miniscule coral islets of deep blue seas offer fantastic cruising adventures with the waterways providing the best and most natural of transport and overhead weather generally picture perfect – sunlit days, breezy nights, balmy mornings and iridescent sunsets.

Long stretches of sugar-white beaches are sanctuary to countless sea birds and extensive coral reefs host an endless variety of exotic fish and marine life. The islands provide a home for the annual migration of Whale Sharks and Mantra Rays and throughout the Maldives Whale Sharks are found patrolling very close to the surface, making the Maldives an ideal destination for snorkelers in any season.

The largest fish on the planet, the Whale Shark (Rhincodon Typus) can grow up to 40’ in length and is a fascinating creature to behold. With no known predators (except humans) and a completely peaceful nature they are huge, harmless and sublime. Despite its incredible size the Whale Shark feeds, like its namesake, almost entirely on plankton and small fish. They are most plentiful near Baa Atoll through July and August, when plankton is at the highest level. Because they pose no real threat to humans, diving with these gentle giants in the Maldives has become a favorite adventure. Other gigantic fish often seen in the area include Manta Rays, Napoleon Wrasse and Reef Shark; and large Sea Turtles are relatively common.

Arriving Superyachts start their adventure at the Capital island of Malé, lying north and located among the miniscule coral islets of the Maldives’ nature-rich archipelago. Asia Pacific Superyachts (APS) Maldives provides visiting vessels a wide range of services with a head office in Malé and branches in the Northern Part of HA, Uligan (North Thiladhunmathi Atoll) and the Southern Part of S. Gan (Addu Atoll). Mohamed Hameed, founder of APS Maldives and a multi-generational resident, and APS director, Arif Abdul Samad, offer the following sample itinerary for an extraordinary trip on one´s own yacht or a luxury charter yacht.

SAMPLE ITINERARY (courtesy of Asia Pacific Superyachts Maldives)

1st Day Kuda Bandos
Situated in Malé Atoll Kuda Bandos is a breathtaking island a shout away from the main island, Bandos. It is ideal for a first day private sunset beach picnic after reef snorkeling & swimming in a clear blue lagoon, as your boat’s needs are all taken care of.

2nd Day Olhahali Island
This beautiful island lies at the northern tip of North Malé Atoll on the north near One & Only Reetha Rah and offers the special attraction of the Olhahali Cave. There are several smaller caves and a big cave 40 metres long at a depth of 25 metres, the main attraction.

3rd Day Dusit Thani Resort on Mudhdhoo Island in Baa Atoll
A beautiful sanctuary sheltered by nature amidst white sandy beaches and encircled by a turquoise lagoon, 100 top of the line guest villas are situated amongst the natural waterways. The Dusit Thani is fast becoming well known for frequent sightings of Dolphins and Sea Turtles and the resort’s ‘living house reef’ is a snorkeler’s paradise. Special dinners and sand spit picnics/set ups in their area for yacht guests and crew can be arranged as well as visits to the wonderful reef that surrounds Mudhdhoo (advance permission required).

4th Day Nibiliga Island
A small but exclusive island and an add-on for those who wish to spend an extra day in the pristine natural beauty of Baa Atoll; Nibiligaa is one of the uninhabited islands of Baa Atoll. Located in the Mendhoo Region are: Nibiligaa Island and reef, Mendhoo Island and reef, Mendhoobinmathee Faru and Kaburu Faru.

5th Day Gemendhoo Island
If time permits, Gemendhoo is a ‘must visit’ island before making the return journey to Malé. This beautiful and small island in Baa Atoll has one of the finest and cleanest of the beaches in the Maldives.

Major changes are being implemented to support conservation and preservation efforts in the above locations and throughout many of the beautiful areas in the Maldives. Among the important changes are those in the diving regulations at Hanifaru Bay at Baa Atoll, outlined under the “Hanifaru Management Plan” of the Baa Atoll Conservation Program.

A popular international dive location, the change at Hanifaru Bay from diving and snorkeling to ‘only snorkeling’ was made to minimise the potentially negative impact from divers on the Manta Rays and Whale Sharks; however, diving is still permitted on the outer area of Hanifaru Bay and the rest of Baa Atoll.

Changes like these brought about the coveted distinction of the entire Baa Atoll being declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve – a distinction awarded to an area of natural excellence recognised for its unique harmony between man and nature.

Many resorts are implementing practices to protect the reefs and marine life due to dire warnings of future danger and the Dusit Thani Maldives is one of the leaders in sustainable resort development in the Maldives; geared toward achieving a carbon-neutral programme and implementing structures to support the live coral reefs.
