Each world-class yacht provides a distinctly different cruising experience, from a casual, hands-on charter aboard the 45-foot yacht Fiona Rois to the palatial comfort of the 147-foot superyacht Lady M. The organisers of the show welcome visitors to explore every stateroom, sundeck, and deluxe amenity to decide which vessel best complements their unique lifestyle.

The Newport Charter Yacht Show is the only of its kind in the U.S. The four-day event will host industry professionals and their clients as well as ancillary boating goods, services, chef’s competitions, and educational seminars.

March 26, 2012

The Newport Harbor Corporation who are new owners of the Newport Charter Yacht Show want to give back to the marine community and has announced the humanitarian organization YachtAid Global © (YAG) as its official charitable partner of 2012. The Newport Charter Yacht Show, now in its 30th year, is the only one of its kind in the U.S. and will be held June 18-21 at the Newport Yachting Center in historic downtown Newport, R.I. The four-day event will host industry professionals and consumers (attending with brokers) and showcase world-class charter yachts ranging from 50 to 200 feet,  as well as ancillary boating goods, services and educational information.

YachtAid Global, a non-profit organization that coordinates the delivery of humanitarian aid aboard superyachts cruising to isolated regions, consists of a network of over a 500 yachting industry professionals including superyacht owners, captains, crew, agents and brokers.

“For the Newport Harbor Corporation, this is a very simple equation,” said event chair and Director of the Newport Exhibition Group Tom DeLotto. “If, through our support of YachtAid Global, the organization is able to make connections with owners and yacht captains who are willing to provide help, then everyone wins.”

Since its inception in 2006, YachtAid Global has successfully delivered aid to over 45 beneficiary locations in 13 countries; 38 luxury yachts have been involved with 385 crew volunteering their time and expertise to move aid to over 1800 children.  Beneficiary locations span from 52 degrees south to 57 degrees north.

While the organization continues to orchestrate the delivery of aid to new regions, founder Mark Drewelow has new goals for this year, which he plans to release at the Newport show.

“YachtAid Global is growing pretty rapidly, and we are looking at ways to harness our growth for maximum impact. Our primary internal focus is building a Founding Members Board that will provide enhanced leadership and help us develop consistent funding to take our charity to the next level,” said Drewelow.

As the Newport Charter Yacht Show charitable partner, YachtAid Global will have a consistent presence at the event.  A brief presentation will be featured at the Captain’s Briefing on June 17 and the Welcome Reception on June 18 to educate the audience on how superyacht owners and crews are increasingly cruising with a charitable cause and provide more information on the Founding Members Board.

“I met Mark at the Antigua Yacht Charter Show in December and was impressed with his vision and passion for executing that vision,” said DeLotto. “Supporting a worthy cause with the sole mission of providing aid to communities that lack resources-even in remote areas and those experiencing natural disasters-is the best and most direct way we can think of to make a difference in the world today.”

The Newport Charter Yacht Show (NCYS), the only one of its kind in the USA, caters to the charter yacht industry with a showcase of luxury charter yachts as well as ancillary boating goods, services and educational information. It also allows consumers (attending with brokers) to learn more about vacationing on one of the many world-class yachts (ranging from 50 to 200 feet) that will be on display.

Monday, June 18, “Entering U.S. Waters”

A presentation by Donna Bradbury, a representative of BWA Yachting for Florida and the Bahamas, will take the audience through the process of bringing a foreign-flagged vessel to the U.S. and explain how the yacht entry process varies from country to country based on local compliance regulations.

“The U.S. entry briefing specifically highlights compliance regulations within the U.S. so that arrivals and departures go smoothly,” said Bradbury, who has been involved in the marine industry and with BWA Yachting for approximately 12 years. The company serves over 275 ports and marinas in the Mediterranean, USA, Bahamas and Caribbean. “The U.S. offers diverse cruising grounds from the East to the West Coast filled with spectacular sights. We look forward to more yachts visiting the USA, and of course we are looking to make their stay a memorable one.”

Tuesday, June 19, “Discover New England”

With so much recreational boating and charter activity prevalent throughout New England, tourism representatives from Massachusetts, Maine and Rhode Island will come together to share tips with charter industry professionals. Presentations will be focused on servicing luxury charter clientele and include new product developments, tours, services and special areas of interest along the coast of each state.

Wednesday, June 20, “STCW Changes and Implications to Your Mariner’s License”

Julie Liberatore of Maritime Professional Training and Michael French of International Yacht Training will highlight the changes to the Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) for seafarers, which took effect January 1, 2012.

Each with backgrounds in maritime training, Liberatore and French will discuss how the process of receiving and renewing licenses, which allow mariners to operate large commercial and private vessels, has evolved, along with the implications of those changes. “The STCW convention forms the very foundation for safety training in the yachting sector as in any maritime sector,” said French. “It is vital that yacht crew are offered continuing information on how regulations affect them.”

Thursday, June 21, “Enhancing Crew and Guest Safety”

With private yachts becoming larger and their systems more complex, the crew responsibilities increase and advanced training becomes vital. Steve Monk of Da Gama, Ltd., a navigation management company with a focus on training, will speak on the importance of captain and crew preparation at sea and how vital it is for passenger safety.

“Training is a crucial aspect in the life of a superyacht, but it is unfortunately one of the first things that can be dropped when a tight schedule and other commitments take precedence,” said Monk, a seasoned mariner with over 20 years of experience driving ships and instructing bridge teams from a variety of different backgrounds, including two years at the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis, Md.) developing and honing the skills of future officers. “With charterers and owners wanting to explore more remote areas of the globe, the importance of training has never been more crucial”

Henry also noted that the 2012 Newport Charter Yacht Show will be staged while the world is focusing on Newport as the venue for the last installment of the America’s Cup World Series 2012 (June 23 through July 1).  According to DeLotto, the America’s Cup event as well as other special events slated for Newport next summer will bring new faces and energy to the already well-established show.
