Results of the inaugural Newport J Class World Championship

August 30, 2017

Written by Rachael Steele

The very first J Class Championship took place between the 21st-26th of August in sunny Newport, Rhode Island and produced seven races of expert sailing from renowned J-class veterans SVEA, TOPAZ, HANUMAN, VELSHEDA, RANGER AND LIONHEART.

Although HANUMAN took first place in three of the seven races, it was LIONHEART’s consistent performance, remaining in the top three of all seven races, that earned her the world title by three points.

LIONHEART also took the Terry Kohler Trophy for becoming the 2017 J-class season champions, combining the results of the St Barth’s Bucket and the America’s Cup J Class Regatta as well as the J Class World Championship.

“I think the strongest thing we have is the crew,” LIONHEART’s Nigel Ingram commented. “I don’t think we have changed a single crew position in the last year and a half. The boat is fast, the sail programme is good. We look after all the small details, we work very hard on making sure the bottom of the boat is good, it is vital in these big boats, we work hard at optimising the displacement and righting moment for the different conditions we sail in.”

HANUMAN were the winners of the St Barths Bucket in March and third place on the podium went to RANGER after narrowly beating TOPAZ, both of whom were also a presence at the J Class regatta earlier this year.

Race Results:

1 LIONHEART – 17

2 HANUMAN – 20

3 RANGER – 24

4 TOPAZ – 27

5 SVEA – 29

6 VELSHEDA – 30

“We are very pleased to announce that the 2016 Newport Charter Show will be managed and hosted by our team at Newport Shipyard. We will work closely with the Newport Exhibition Group for a smooth transition and look forward to executing a well-run event for many years to come,” Dana said.

“We felt Newport Shipyard was the natural fit for the long term growth of the show,” commented Nancy Piffard, Show Director of Newport Exhibition Group. “The amount of dock space, services, and amenities that Newport Shipyard offers lends itself to the larger yacht industry. Transfer of the Charter Show will also provide us the opportunity to focus on the Newport International Boat Show, which takes place annually in September. New monohull 24 hour distance record set by striking 100ft Supermaxi Yacht COMANCHE by Hodgdon Yachts

July 14, 2015

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

The striking 100-foot supermaxi yacht COMANCHE by Hodgdon Yachts has set a new monohull 24 hour distance record at the 2015 Transatlantic Race. The record of superyacht COMANCHE is still to ratified off the boats tracker by the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC).

Update off COMANCHE yacht from Ken Read: “What started off as a very frustrating light air Transatlantic Race 2015 has turned to gold for all of us aboard Hodgdon’s 100 foot super-maxi Comanche. Approximately 1300 miles out of Newport, Rhode Island in the North Atlantic we set up underneath an approaching low pressure. We’ve had a phenomenal stretch of strong wind and reasonably flat sea which has propelled us to what we believe is a new record for the greatest distance covered by a monohull in a single 24-hour period.”

The previous 24-hour monohull distance record was set by Ericsson 4 in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 race. They covered 596,6 nautical miles during Leg 1 between Alicante, Spain and Cape Town, South Africa with an average speed of 24,85 knots.

“We believe the distance will be at least 620 nautical miles. Hodgdon Comanche is still on the same course and the distance could still grow as the record calculation is made off the most miles in 24 hours. We are currently going faster now than we were at the start of the run,” added Ken Read.

Newport Charter Yacht Show 2015 demonstrates strength of Superyacht Charter Industry in New England

July 02, 2015

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

Held at the Newport Yachting Center and Marina on the historic Newport, Rhode Island waterfront, the recently concluded Newport Charter Yacht Show 2015 was a great demonstration of just how strong the superyacht charter industry is in New England.  Following four days of glamorous parties, informative seminars and tours of 25 top-class yachts worth a combined value of over $100 million, the 34th edition of the prestigious event concluded on Thursday, June 25, 2015.

This year’s Show hosted a truly amazing selection of yachts, from classic day-sailing vessels like the 32-foot restored wooden Dreamboat Latitude to luxurious motoryachts like the 130-foot charter yacht Plan A and the 172-foot superyacht Big Eagle. Moreover, there were plenty of options in style as well, including the largest Hinckley ever built: 85-foot sailing yacht Northern Star.

“Northern Star is really a sailor’s sailboat with yacht amenities, said Jared Thomas Lazor, who is co-captain of the Northern Star yacht with his wife Andrea Gray McDonald.People that like to charter Northern Star are the kinds that want to unplug from technology and explore and relax.”

On the question how a superyacht charter vacation differs from that of a vacation in a hotel, McDonald answered, “This is truly a one-of-a-kind experience and an adventure. Our itinerary is customized to fit exactly what our guest wants to do every day. It’s our job as captain and crew to make our guests fall in love with the charter lifestyle. The reason that there are so many different charter yachts available is so that potential guests can find the perfect one for them.”

The event also featured plenty of educational seminars and guests had a unique opportunity to watch as the professionals onboard the yachts put their culinary and hospitality skills to the test in a series of crew competitions.

Furthermore, there was plenty of waterfront entertainment during the event, including two nights of lively “Yacht Hops”, where captains as well as crews donned costumes, representing their yachts’ themes, and dazzled guests with clever cocktails and tasty hors d’oeuvres. The festivities kicked off with the show’s popular Welcome Reception on Monday evening, which took on a Caribbean Carnival theme with the help of the U.S. Virgin Islands – Department of Tourism, a new sponsor.

“It was a truly memorable event with our Caribbean ritual dancers, a mocko jumbie and island music from Image Band,” comments U.S. Virgin Islands Commissioner of Tourism, Beverly Nicholson-Doty. “Many guests and yacht captains – most of whom are frequent visitors to the territory – noted that it was the best welcome reception in the trade show’s history.”
