177′ Newcastle superyacht Chuggaboom by Andrew Winch Designs due to be delivered in 2013

April 04, 2012

Written by Zuzana Bednarova

The 177’ motor yacht Chuggaboom designed by Andrew Winch Designs represents comfort, functionality as well as the state-of-art technological requirements necessary for the most demanding of expeditions. Initiated in 2006, an initial concept of the Chuggaboom superyacht was developed by Andrew Winch Designs for their return Client.

177´ Newcastle Expedition Yacht

177´ Newcastle Expedition Yacht

Whilst the Andrew Winch Designs concept remains essential to the current design, Vripack of The Netherlands completed the first phase of the engineering development, with further input from Murray and Associates, a naval architecture and marine engineer firm in Fort Lauderdale. Scheduled for delivery in 2013, this unique yacht is currently in build at Newcastle Shipyards, Florida.

As an experienced Exploration Yacht owner, having cruised in a 100ft version of the Expedition yacht but again built by Newcastle Shipyards, the Client’s brief stipulated a design that should be discrete, and provide family and friends the opportunity to explore freely both the shores and waters in which they cruise. This was not to be a yacht that enticed people to look at her whilst in port; although beautiful, she should remain anonymous providing the Client with a home at sea.

Whilst her exterior remains strong and sturdy, and true to an exploration yacht; a ‘Thailand beach chic’ theme runs throughout the interior. Vast windows allow a connection with the exterior from all areas of the expedition yacht Chuggaboom, whilst a full beam observation lounge creates spectacular panoramic views. In keeping with the exploration requirements, low-maintenance materials have been incorporated into the design to ensure a practical and enjoyable environment in which guests relax, and easy for crew to maintain whilst at sea.

The Client’s passion for both diving and onshore exploration involved Andrew Winch Designs considering the storage aspect greatly. A dedicated motorbike storage unit complete with workshop for the Client’s six KTM cross country endurance bikes has been incorporated; whilst, to ensure the safe transportation of bikes to shore, a specifically designed barge tender with ramp is housed amid ships. In addition, state-of-the-art dive equipment is installed onboard, complete with diving tender.

The Dutch yacht designer Vripack has revealed details about its new project, a 54m motor yacht Chuggaboom. Project number 5741 Chuggaboom superyacht is a luxury expedition vessel, featuring a stunning interior by renowned Andrew Winch Designs. She is currently in build by the American yard New Castle Marine.

177´ four-level super yacht Chuggaboom features an open air sundeck with helipad situated at the aft and a spa pool and sunpads at the fore. The main deck offers a large utility deck forward, utilised for yacht tenders and jet ski water toys, served by a dedicated crane.

Vripack luxury yacht Chuggaboom boasts a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure, set aft of midships permitting a long bow and utility deck to the fore. Her beam is of 11.50m (38ft) and her draft of 3.96m (13ft).

Bart Bouwhuis Director of Design from Vripack,  “This globetrotting family yacht is a true dedication to the original philosophy of our Research Vessel design. She is outrageously spacious and has been designed for a very experienced yachting family with the typical no-nonsense attitude we love. Even we have difficulty holding her down on our drawing tables, as the adventure that goes together with her design makes the drawings come alive.”

“Besides all the effort our Design Studio has put into this yacht’s powerful appearance”, Bart continues, “Vripack’s naval architects captured an excellent sea going comfort. A rigorous Hydrodynamic Research program, in combination with our 50 years of in-house knowledge are the key components in the development of her lines plan.”

“Her robust and masculine appearance is accompanied by a softer and luxurious Andrew Winch interior, Chuggaboom really provides her family with the best of both worlds.”

“A special feature of this semi commercial yacht is the dedicated motorbike store with workshop. The shop is directly connected to the forward boat deck enabling the bikes to be rolled on a tender with integrated ramp giving easy transport of their motorbikes onto the mainland to explore back lands on remote islands.”

“Once back on the yacht, the owner is able to relive the adventure on his full owners deck with extensive panoramic windows and a front facing observation launch. With this new yacht the owner will have the freedom to navigate without any restrictions, and thus explore and admire multiple remote areas of the world, just as he asked the design team to do”, concludes Bart.
